At first glance, Ela looks like a human girl of no more than 12 years. In fact, she is an elf of a many more years but still very young by the life-span of that ancestry.
Her elven ears tend to hide within her long, thick chestnut hair, which invites undesired patronizing from elders and even non-elder adults of other ancestries.
She has a youthful, round face that is constantly projecting a determined expression. She will often glare at something or someone as she concentrates on the subject, trying to figure it out or recall knowledge about it.

Behavior and Personality

Ela often surprises others with the manner in which she speaks, seeming more like an adult than her appearance would suggest. However, if one probes enough they will find the lack of earned wisdom of an adult elf.
Based on her background, she's used to low expectations. It takes time to earn her trust. However, once somebody has it, she can be a ferocious friend. While she can be pessimistic, she's quite open to others who acknowledge her abilities and especially those who share arcane and engineering interests.

Background

Ela does not know where she originally came from. Her earliest memories are of handmaids tending to her at the Arcanamirium.
Odd, this is a wizards academy, not an orphanage...
There were whispers about her origin but never any verified facts. Was she the illegitimate child of one of the important wizards there? Perhaps she was cursed to lose her prior memories, cutting off knowledge of where she came from, perhaps an entire other life.
The instructors often talked about her potential and she began training at a very young age.
However, while she took to it naturally she was distracted by curiosities of how mechanical things work. While her instructors did not approve, she kept a consuming hobby taking apart pistols and putting them back together. The tell-tail smudges of black powder all over her hands and face would often give her away.
There was one professor who encouraged her in her hobby. A professor of engineering and magic who was pioneering a new field of mixing magic and mechanical devices.
Eventually, she convinced Ela to take some time off from the Arcanamirium and see the world, applying her skill set to real world problems.
