SPECIAL ABILITIES

Attached A simple silver necklace given to him by a girl from back home. Whenever the object of your attachment is either threatened, in danger, or in someone else’s possession, you take a –1 penalty on Will saves and a –2 penalty on saves against fear effects. If the person or object to which you’re attached is ever lost, killed, or destroyed, exchange this drawback for the Doubt drawback.

Principled You take a –2 penalty on Bluff checks and gain a +2 trait bonus on saving throws against charm, compulsion, and emotion effects.

Favored Enemy (Humans) At 1st level, a ranger selects a creature type from the ranger favored enemies table. He gains a +2 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, and Survival checks against creatures of his selected type. Likewise, he gets a +2 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against them. A ranger may make Knowledge skill checks untrained when attempting to identify these creatures.

Track A ranger adds half his level (minimum 1) to Survival skill checks made to follow tracks.

Wild Empathy A ranger can improve the initial attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like a Diplomacy check to improve the attitude of a person (see Using Skills). The ranger rolls 1d20 and adds his ranger level and his Charisma bonus to determine the wild empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly. To use wild empathy, the ranger and the animal must be within 30 feet of one another under normal visibility conditions. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute, but, as with influencing people, it might take more or less time. The ranger can also use this ability to influence a magical beast with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2, but he takes a –4 penalty on the check.

Favored Terrain (Plains) At 3rd level, a ranger may select a type of terrain from Table: Ranger Favored Terrains. The ranger gains a +2 bonus on initiative checks and Knowledge (geography), Perception, Stealth, and Survival skill checks when he is in this terrain. A ranger traveling through his favored terrain normally leaves no trail and cannot be tracked (though he may leave a trail if he so chooses).

At 8th level and every five levels thereafter, the ranger may select an additional favored terrain. In addition, at each such interval, the skill bonus and initiative bonus in any one favored terrain (including the one just selected, if so desired), increases by +2.

If a specific terrain falls into more than one category of favored terrain, the ranger's bonuses do not stack; he simply uses whichever bonus is higher.

Background:
Edward never wanted for much in life. Born the middle child and the youngest son, he cared deeply for his parents, elder brother, and little sister as well as the people. His father was an honorable man, a real strait-edge that he looked up to. He was also a fierce warrior that had little leniency when it came to Edward's knighthood.

"Keep your arm strong, don't let me swat your blade away!" Again and again Edward tried to hold his ground, but his father aggressively beat at Edward's sword, killing any chance of a strong swing. Between the battering he rapped Edward about the chest and shoulders gently, but hard enough to leave a mark. Finally Edward twisted and let his right arm fall away, making his father overreach as Edward brought up the wooden shield and bashed him in the teeth. His father stumbled back, touching the blood on his lip and smiling. "Innovative, well done son." And he launched into another attack.

And so life went on this way for many years. Edward and his family bowed their heads to the old gods, sticking to the old ways. His father always told him "Never forget where you came from, and always pray in private. Respect others views, give them your ear but not your heart."

Edward and his brother got along well, both of them born into the position they fit well. His brother was a good fighter but a better diplomat. Edward was glad to one day serve as a knight, protecting the people directly.

The battle of St.Albans was Edward's first real battle and he relished the opportunity. It was harsher than he expected but by evening time he was smiling with the others in victory. By nighttime he was not once his father and brother both were amongst those poisoned.

Grief stricken Edward wanted to pursue the Saxons and hunt every last one of them down. He spent a few days in mourning, and when he emerged to face the world again he realized that he would be inheriting what his brother was meant to. He has never wanted for this, but life had given it to him regardless. Now he goes for an early knighthood so he may face his responsibilities.

Appearance and Personality:

Edward has a strong jaw and kind brown eyes. He has a pronounced nose and thin, wavy hair that he keeps combed back. His jaw, constant stubble, and strong neck makes him look older than he is.

Edward has a gentle nature about him. He treats other people with a quiet respect and Christianity with a quiet contempt. While not easily roused to argue, if he's baited he argues fiercely against the new ways.

Nature Lover: Edward is more at home under the sky than a roof. He understands the ways of nature and spending some time in the wilderness helps to calm him.. His pagan beliefs encourage this connection and he treats it as holy.

Laid Back: Edward lets most things roll off his shoulders. He prefers to avoid conflict, and isn't overly ambitious.

Loyal: Edward keeps a close circle of friends but those that he travels and breaks bread with are his family away from home. He believes unblemished trust keeps a man alive.

Charitable: Edward sympathizes with the low-born and always strives to help them, whether it be a coin, a kind word, or a favor. His father instilled in him that all people should know who they kneel to, not just by title but what kind of man they are.

Chivalrous: Edward is a bit awkward around girls, his current love interest is left alone since he can't work up the courage to approach her. But his mother had always taught him to be respectful to the woman around him.

Religion:
Edward follows the old gods and goes by the old ways (pagan). He believes nature in all of its forms to be holy. He treats Christians with a quiet contempt, but unless roused to argue he rarely opens his mouth on such matters.
