Cold stone dampens your feet as you shift about, your mind waking slowly from an unexpected slumber. You feel the rough cloth wrapped around your forehead as your eyes dart around, searching for light. They find none at the moment. Your hands are bound behind your back and a violently vile smell assaults your nostrils and sores your throat. Was it death? Feces? Something unnatural? In the moment you can't tell.

One small ray of hope- you hear others waking near you. More dampened feet shifting about as they walk in the dark. Your foot hits a wall first, then your head, before finding an empty hallway. You hope it's an empty hallway.

You remember boarding a ship, but fail to remember the Captain. You certainly remember where you boarded, but don't remember the journey or number of stops to port on the way. You don't remember any voices, but you do remember someone helping to feed you and sip water from a waterskin.

Remember the Journey DC 20 Intelligence Check:

Achieve this and you will receive a message from me.

Perception DC 20:

You hear all sorts of fun activities and sounds somewhere above you. Coins rattle around in hands, slot machines ramble and spin. Something big stomps around now and again, and you swear you hear someone outside ringing a bell yelling "Ice cream, Ice cream!"

Perception DC 15:

The vile smell that fills your airways tells you that you are near, and perhaps even standing, in animal waste of all sorts. You begin to fear that if you toe around as if it were sand on a beach, you may even find a bone or two.

Kn. Nature DC 15:

You determine a boar of sorts has been down here, making this not only its home but some sort of slaughter grounds. You also note that amidst the horrid smells, one you don't smell is slop. It doesn't appear to eat or sleep here.

You may interact as you see fit and make rolls to attempt things not listed here- Perceptions in search of something outside of the information provided, Escape Artist for the binds, etc. Welcome to the Throne Room!

Hello selected players and welcome! As we get ready to have some RP and introduce ourselves off the boat, I will be working on our first set of maps. Do not worry, we have some time before we will need one. :)

On that note, I'm most comfortable with Roll20, but have experimented with Google Slides.

I have seen several recruitments where players will refuse to play a game if one and not the other is used- so, does any player oppose vehemently to us using roll20 for maps in this game?

HOMEBREW CAMPAIGN

Hapless. Luckless. Ill-fated. Ill-starred. Foredoomed. You’re all out of luck. Be it one too many bets, a family debt passed down to an unsuspecting child, or simply robbed, you find that you may have fallen down for the last time. There is only one way out- The Financier.

A gossiped rumor whispered into myth and legend amongst the downtrodden, you begin to hear tales of “The Financier.” A being that would take pity on the unfortunate and give them an opportunity to go from ill-fated to the most fortunate, powerful, and wealthy in the known world. The cost? Passing the Trial of the Coin, and one full year of service to The Financier.

The Trial of the Coin
Those who have caught the attention of the Financier will, in one odd fashion or another, find themselves holding a gold piece wrapped in cloth. One side of the coin is as if it were stained with black ink, the other gleaming gold as if it had just been polished. Written on the cloth is a particular challenge and test of your skills presented to you by the Financier. Complete it and gain an audience- fail and you may never have this fate changing opportunity again.

THE TRIAL OF THE COIN (Instructions written on the cloth)
1. Buy as many of the cheapest rations you can find with the coin.
2. Trade those rations for a sum greater than their worth.
3. Buy this coin back for exactly what you made selling the rations.

Do these three things, and you will have met the king.

PLAYER COUNT: 4 will be selected to meet the king.

CHARACTER CREATION RULES
Level 3 (with Level 2 WBL from the Character Advancement Page)
25 point buy
2 traits - drawbacks allowed on a case by case basis
Perception, Craft, Perform, Profession are all class skills
2 additional class skill ranks per level
Location doesn’t matter for the purposes of this campaign or your backstory- Mwangi, Varisia, Cheliax, Shackles, etc.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENT
Your background should come in two parts. One will be what the cause of your “rock bottom” situation was and is. Two will be how you succeeded at the Trial of the Coin. If it is believable that a fortunate dice roll or 3 could have allowed the event to happen, it will be acceptable.

GM APPROVAL NEEDED / BANNED CONTENT
No PoW, No SoP, I’m just not a fan of these systems
Classes: 3pp is subject to GM approval- if 3pp or uncommon shoot me a request
Races: Subject to GM approval- if 3pp or uncommon shoot me a request
Templates / Mythic / Etc.: This may be rewarded through the campaign, but it will not be immediate. If you have something that you will want, that is eventually crucial to your PC’s desired development, please feel free to ask about it or DM me.

From your GM to you, the potential players:

Hello! I just finished a 2 year written campaign (which I held through discord) and am looking to begin round 2 of this little experiment of mine through Paizo. I’ve been a Pathfinder GM for about 6 years, and still know absolutely nothing when it comes to the fun crazy things a group of players is capable of. :P

My expectations for this homebrew is about a year of commitment, maybe a tad shorter or longer depending on the group selected and their ambitions through this journey together.I love scenarios where players get to play things they normally wouldn’t, in unusual circumstances, with an “end goal” in mind for both them and the GM.

Some things that are possible here are getting crazy amounts of gold to spend (last group was given 5 million GP each before the end), weird rewards for innovative RP, the potential for templates and mythic and gestalt, and it has been 3 years of GM’ing since I’ve had a group not hit level 20.

This campaign is morally ambiguous and questionable. You may start saving a kitten from a tree only to find that kitten was a polymorphed serial killer. Maybe you have to burn a building down, just so the company down the road can rebuild it. I can promise your PC will, be it CN, CE, or LG, not like everything that is presented to be done all of the time. I do not require morally ambiguous or flexible PCs, though. You will almost always have a way out. To you Paladins and Monks with vows and codes- should you ever “have” to lose your powers from breaking it, you will always be granted access to means to redeem yourself.

Please feel free to always correct me when you think I got something wrong, and be sure to always follow the golden rule with an emphasis on being polite and cordial.

Please post consistently- we all disappear for an extra day now and again, but making a habit of it slows everything down to immersion breaking speeds. If something is up or you have plans on the weekend, all I ask is that you shoot a message in our discussion thread. I promise to do the same.

Remember that this is a game, our goal is to have fun, write a wonderful story together, and hopefully we all get to experience something wonderful and exciting and new through the process and medium that is Pathfinder. :)

Recruitment Start: 10/03/2021
Anticipated Game Day 1: 10/30/2021

I enjoy giving players plenty of time for questions, character creation, along with the infamous background and build tinkering. However, I also enjoy some time to myself after selection to make sure I tailor milestones and events to the players I select for a game.

For this reason recruitment will occur for some time- so take your time applying and ask plenty of questions. :)
