About Dorji Kasune
Dorji grew up in a monastery in Magnimar. The monks educated him and the other orphans in all aspects of Abadar, martial arts as well as history and other academic subjects. His childhood was a fun experience.
The only information that Dorji was told about his natural parents is that he was found as an egg in the ruins of a burning cathedral. This egg was carefully cared for and, in the best interest of the little Tengu, was turned over to the monastery. Dorji didn’t pursue this. Oh, he suspected that there was more; perhaps he knew that the rest of the story would be disappointing. The truth is, the rest of the story is a little sad, but with a happy ending.
The egg that became Dorji Kasune was found in the ruins of a burning cathedral in Absalom. The man who found it was scavenging the ruins and thought he had found the egg of a vicious, valuable creature that he could sell. So he took it back to his Sczarni leader, hoping for a large finder’s fee. Divination magic determined that it wasn’t the egg of a dragon or some such terrible monster that would be worth a fortune but only that of a Tengu. The decision was made to hatch the egg and raise the Tengu as part of the family. The man who found the egg had no desire or patience to raise a child so the egg was taken to the Varisian city of Magnimar and handed over to an Abadar monastery that the Sczarni had some influence over. Dorji was raised by monks of all different races, including one other Tengu who taught Dorji of their culture and language. As Dorji grew up, he realized the value of being quiet and just listening, letting others talk and learning what they had to say. The Sczarni saw the value in this too. As often as weekly, a family member would visit the monastery to check on the progress of their little Sczarni. Sometimes they would take an older child from their studies and assign them duties for the day. Nothing important, really, maybe just watching a shop and reporting who went in and out, or maybe they would be assigned to follow someone for the day or just deliver a message. From these simple tasks the family would evaluate the child’s performance and potential. Dorji’s loyalty was never questioned, his ability to quietly observe from the shadows and accurately report was of obvious value but could he take care of himself in case of trouble? The monks reported that he wasn’t taking to the martial arts as well as some of the other students but they would keep trying to teach him. Then the day came that Dorji happened across a longbow. He was a natural, it was like he had been training with it for years. He was able to apply all the meditation methods he had learned to the bow. Now the Sczarni had the whole package with Dorji. He could be bodyguard, enforcer, infiltrator or anything in between. Then the idea of asking him to join the Pathfinder Society came up and he was on his way back to Absalom.
Even though Dorji misses the family back in Magnimar, he enjoys traveling and meeting new people. He sees every Pathfinder mission as an opportunity to listen and learn and he always keeps an eye out for the Sczarni’s interest.
