![]() Answers to Life's Questions: 1) Before you is a huge web. In it are a priest of Iomedae and a beautiful maiden. You have time to rescue one of them, which one and why? "Where is the bloody spider! I am going to kill that long-legged freak-fanged beastie! The ladies will just have to wait...it isn't like they have anything better to do than hang around." 2) You are traveling through the forest and you suddenly see three goblins poking at a bound prisoner on the ground. What do you do? Dolum scratches his beard a bit. "Is that really a question? Anybody knows that you shoot the goblins. Then if the guy gives you trouble, you shoot him." 3) You just returned from successfully defeating a dragon which had been terrorizing the local villages. An orphanage requested that the brave heroes come so that the children can meet them. You accept, but then receive an invitation from the King to join him at a banquet in your honor. You cannot do both, what do you do? "Go see the kids. Kids appreciate a good story of daring and adventure. Then later, once all the wee ones are asleep, you make your way to the castle. You see, when you are the guest of honor, everyone is always keeping their eyes on you. So it makes it really hard to take a little looksee at the king's vault. Seriously, can you imagine the lock? Most kings build complex mechanisms with several keys and traps." 4) How do you expect your character to develop by level 5? Level 10? "I figure that I will get much better at picking locks and staying in the shadows. I want to walk into a room and just know where all the traps are and see a way around them. Being a better sneak might be a good idea too...everyone seems to get upset when you crack their vault...its not like I am going to take anything from an honest ruler...I just like the locks." Shooting for a shadowdancer, mainly for the hide-in-plain sight ability. Comes in handy at the higher levels.[/b] 5) Who is your favorite villain and your favorite hero from a medieval story and why? Can be historic, from a book, or from a movie. "Ooooh. Less see...Ivanhoe is my favorite hero. The guy had it all, beautiful dames, a blonde and a dark haired one, great battles, great enemies. And he knew he wasn't perfect, but tried anyways...and he got the girl in the end. As for the best villian...definitely Faust. He thought he was doing the wrong thing for the right reason...or so he thought. He ended up getting what was coming too him too...just like the contract." 6) Let me know if/how much you have played/read the ToEE - any version including AD&D, 3rd Ed., Return to ToEE, or any video games or novels. [ooc]Well I have played the computer game. I never made it to the tomb though...the game kept crashing. But its been 3-4 years since I last attempted it, so I don't remember much. 7) You are sitting in a tavern when a distraught father runs in and announces that his daughter has been kidnapped by brigands and now they are demanding a ransom or will kill her. He says he has no money to reward the party but hears that the brigands have had much success. What do you do? "By myself? Well that isn't that great a plan." "Brigands aren't that big on security...and if I am in nothing town, there won't be much else to do, or any other locks to pick. I could get lucky and the brigands might be holed-up in an old dungeon or fortress, with some old traps and vaults still intact..." "I guess I would set it up with the father to go and plead with the brigands at dawn or some such time, for a distraction, you know. Then I would spend most of the night sneaking in and seeing what I could do to free the girl. At the worst, the father begging would be entertainment enough to draw off some of the brigands, and the leader, so I could slit a few throats and get the girl out. Set some fire, let animals loose, shoot some folks with arrows, general chaos, then sneak out." "I might even survive that plan."

I am not playing in any other games right now. I was in one a while back before the DM couldn't continue. I will be able to post daily, at a minimum. ![]()
![]() Dolum would like to throw his hat in the ring. Dolum has been traveling for several years now and he finds himself in Brevoy contemplating a the possibility of an expedition to Numeria, or perhaps to the Observatory. In any event any interesting tales of ancient locked, trapped and warded locations will draw him like a moth to the flame. DM: He is a dwarven rogue...and a bit obsessive at times, so its a good thing he is tough. He has yet to find that one big challenge and as such will be willing to get creative in an effort to find what he seeks. ![]()

"So how do we do this? Throw out the bound assailants to the guard?" Dolum, scratches his beard in thought for a moment then moves closer to the door and shouts out in dwarven, "I am Dolum Breaker of Dongun Hold. ![]() "Our clan name was originally Breaker-of-the-Plunderers in the ancient tongue. So you can see how the rune-makers quickly got tired of such a laborious name when writing the histories, and...truncated it." Dolum tugs at his chin-whiskers in thought for a moment before continuing. "The library that you belong to...I am assuming it is extensive? Would it already have documents relating to the craft of my clan?" ![]()

![]() "Mister....?" A perplexed look crosses Dolum's face for a moment. "No, no, I don't quench the gunsteel in the foundries. I am an apprentice locksmith. I am called Dolum, apprentice to Isiron of the Breaker clan of Dongun Hold." Dolum takes a swig of ale, then wipes the foam from his beard. "I am guessing you are a traveller, large ser, have you come from the north or the south?" ![]()

Adon wrote: "Hey there Skinny, if you would like to be part of our conversation, then by all means join us. We could always make room for one more at our table." Dolum's beetle black eyebrows raise at this sudden invitation. Might as well listen close rather than listen far. At that, he hefts his mug and makes his way to lean against the wall that the giant is occupying. "Dolum. Evening.", he says. ![]()

![]() The big one does look like a traveler. Dolum grunted to himself, and took another pull of ale from his mug. The group looked pretty occupied, it might be better to wait until later to talk to the giant...and besides, he might hear something interesting from the group before then. ![]() Belly full and belt loosened, Dolum settles back on the bench that he is occupying. The other occupants of the trestle table are both unremarkable and occupied with their own conversations. Then, into a brief moment of silence, a shout rings out across the tavern. Corban Tain wrote: “Hey big man there is a spare seat here it you'd care to join us!" Dolum quickly spies both the travelworn giant at the doorway and the threesome that had called for him to join them. Interesting. Now why would such a motley group be drinking together? Curiosity getting the better of him, Dolum gets up from his seat, and taking his mug with him, he makes his way as close as practical to the small group. ![]()
Dwarf Locksmith/1
![]() Isiron’s apprentice ambled toward the northern exit from Alkenstar, another body in the crushing press of workers leaving the belching factories for the solace of their families or the heady camaraderie of one of the city’s many taverns. Unlike many of his brethren, Dolum had never evoked the same sense of granite-like solidity in his frame or attitude. An observer following Dolum through the choked streets, would have quickly realized that Dolum instead moved through the crowd like a sprung cable, twisting between bodies and making steady progress towards the northern gate. It had been an unpleasant three days since he had left Dongun Hold. In the few short days he had been thrown out of two merchant houses and the goldsmith’s guild house. It was quickly becoming apparent, even to Dolum, that this quest was not nearly going to be as simple as he had originally thought. Which , he mused as he rubbed the bruise courteously bestowed by a goldsmith apprentice, might explain the bit of a laugh he had thought that he had seen in the eye of Isiron as he had seen his apprentice off. Who knew that so many people would get upset when he opened their locks? Nobody seemed to understand that he had no interest in taking that which did not belong to him. Only diseased or deranged dwarves would ever consider taking another’s property. The people of Alkenstar were just too dense to realize this. Perhaps Nex would be more cosmopolitan? The scent of roasted meat and ale suddenly washed across the road, momentarily overpowering the normal mingled stench of rotting vegetation, manure and human waste. The dwarf’s stomach growled suddenly in response, and he peered around for the source of the arresting smell, quickly locating the sign of the Angry Wizard, swaying slightly. A toothy grin broke through the short brushy black beard at the thought of a haunch and a mug of ale. Well, it won’t hurt anything to have a full belly before I head north, he thought as he elbowed and wove his way across the press to the tavern's door. Unsurprisingly the interior of the tavern was full of humans as the streets outside. Dolum shrugged and made his way to an open bench, ordering a mug and a plate of meat from a passing serving human. Dolum noticed the glances and the sidelong looks and ignored them as he busied himself on his quickly delivered meal and mug. ![]()
![]() Got a bit more of the character updated. The skinny is this: someone has to make locks to keep all the dwarven treasure safe, right? Well that dwarf would be Isiron Truelock, master locksmith and trapmaker. Isiron's apprentice is something of a failure in the locksmithing business though. Dolum tends to find the opening of a lock, the avoidance of traps and the defeat of mechanisms to be far more interesting than the actual creation of said mechanics. To be honest, Dolum has always had an unhealthy interest in opening locks, the dwarven elders had just hoped that that interest could be channeled to better purpose. Isiron has decided to release Dolum from his apprenticeship for the period of 10 years so he can better determine what his path in life is going to be. Isiron also hopes that some time away from Dongun Hold will shake the shake the young dwarf up and when he returns, he hopes he will be ready to be a responsible member of the clan. Dolum thinks this is the greatest idea since polished gold. He longs to find more impressive locks, mechanisms and traps, and defeat them. He is being dutiful in his search however. He is annotating any interesting mechanisms in a journal, thus recording his conquests, but also taking the most interesting ideas back to Isiron when his 10 years are complete. |
