Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to GMing and so rather than try to come up with everything myself I thought I'd ask for the help of the forum.

So, the scenario is thus, I want to make use of the bonus spells granted by the Grand Coven ritual without having to fill the room with a dozen hags.

Enter the magic item; A cauldron which is used as part of the Grand Coven ritual, or at least a modified version of it. I can come up with a fitting description easily enough but I'd like help The Cauldron is set with 13 gems hold the souls of those hags whose essence will be used to power the coven spells.

Now, obviously a fully empowered cauldron giving one hag or witch access to the full power of the expanded coven spell list would be a bit much so in order to tone it down, there could be less or more if you wanted to go in the opposite direction.

And here is where I ask for your help.

  • How do I stat this thing? I can think of a few things to balance it out, like the coven needing to continually sacrifice intelligent creatures into the pot to keep the hag souls from escaping or some such.
  • How much is it worth?
  • Does the item sound too powerful to be craftable? Should it be an artifact or simply unique?
  • What should the DC on the check to avoid having one's soul trapped?
  • What would this add to the CR of an encounter with a coven of hags?
