About Dhakir Zafar

The bronzed man just reaches six feet in height. His well defined body is the result of years of hard labor, but it's the numerous scars that he carries across his chest and back that betray a past as a slave. Dhakir keeps his head shaved and sports a few choice tattoos in addition to a number of crude brands. He is typically quiet and soft spoken, but the burning desire for freedom rages hottest when forced into action.

Background:

The unwanted product of the coupling between a slave and whore, Dhakir has had anything but an easy life. Discarded after birth, he was found and raised by a homeless beggar on the streets of Kalapesh. Before living out his first decade, the boy was forced to survive on his own when a wasting disease claimed the life of his caregiver.

He spent the next few years surviving in the streets of Katapesh. He survived on the willing - and unwilling - charity of others to sustain him. It wasn't until he was just entering manhood when his life would change for the worse. While enjoying the offerings of one of Katapesh's seedier drinking establishments, Dhakir was drugged by the individual serving him. When he awoke, Dhakir found himself in the custody of slavers who happily sold him to the highest bidder.

Independent and stubborn, but unable to escape, Dhakir would most likely have died under the taskmaster's whip if he had not been befriended by a fellow slave, Torg Miremaul. The dwarf taught him how to survive this new way of life and the two became good friends. Eventually Torg was sold to another and it would be several years before Dhakir would see his savoir again.

Dhakir was passed from owner to owner over the next few years; some were cruel, others less so, but none were willing to grant him freedom. One day, while accompanying one of his many masters to a gladiatorial event, Dhakir witnessed a fight between a chimera and several slaves. As he watched man after man be slain by the beast, one combatant began to stand out. It was Torg, wielding a heavy looking axe with expert skill. Eventually, the dwarf fell, but not before delivering a fatal blow to the monster. Although saddened by Torg's death, Dhakir also felt a great sense of pride at the courage and skill his old friend had displayed.

The following year, Dhakir was sold to a wealthy merchant with a gambling habit. The fat trader would buy slaves to pit in the gladiatorial rings as quickly as they perished. When presented with an array of weapons with which to fight, Dhakir was quick to select the same heavy dwarven-style axe his late friend had hefted. Although too clumsy to wield single-handed, he quickly learned how to maneuver the weapon with skill and lethal precision. It soon became his weapon of choice in the arena. Dhakir's time as a gladiator was short-lived, however, when the merchant's gambling left him broke and forced him to sell most of his slaves to the Katapesh government.

Now, for the first time since his enslavement, the opportunity for freedom has presented itself. Under the watchful eye of Garavel, Dhakir has volunteered to help revitalize an old trade route to Osirion.
