Appearance

A young Varisian woman of 18 summers, Detressa is tall but slim, with fairly narrow hips and small breasts, lacking the curves that many Varisian women are famous for. Her face is narrow, her features perhaps just a little too pale and angular to really be called beautiful, although some would describe her as striking. She has large, dark eyes, although she tends to keep them half-lidded. Her skin is paler than typical for a Varisian, looking slightly unhealthy from lack of sunshine. Her hair is dark and long, hanging down to her lower back, although she normally wears it in a long single plait, or bound in a tail and concealed under her cloak.

She normally wears a black hooded robe, or a black hooded cloak over a simple white blouse and black skirt, although she sometimes also dons a colourful Varisian scarf, a gift from her mother.

Background

Spoiler:
Even as a young child, Detressa was different.
Born to a family of wandering Varisians, her skin was always icy cold, leaving her to be shunned as cursed by much of the clan. As she grew (healthy despite her curiously cold touch), she was plagued by disturbing dreams, some of a vaguely prophetic nature, full of odd imagery. Recurring dreams of water have left her deathly afraid of the ocean (but not other types of water).

She played little with other children growing up, and did not learn the dances that most Varisian girls practice, but instead associated with the clans wise-women and Harrowers, and spent hours inside the caravans, poring over old tomes.

When she was 14, the clan passed through the ancient and strange city of Kaer Maga, and her grandmother took her to the temple of Pharasma there. The priests pronounced her blessed by Pharasma and accepted her as a trainee at the temple. Although she was not actually asked her opinion on this dramatic change to her life, she accepted it, and soon found a growing devotion to Pharasma.

Her training encompassed all three aspects of the church, but she ended up finding the most acceptance amongst the somewhat marginalised Prophecy branch of the temple, those who were considered odd and even slightly mad by lay people and fellow clergy alike. She had a natural talent when it came to healing, but her icy cold hands and somewhat odd manner of looking at people made her an ill fit amongst the temple’s midwives. It was initially thought that she might fit in well amongst the morticians, but prolonged time spent amongst the crypts tended to make her nightmares worse, though she became well versed in the work. The soothsayers welcomed her, fascinated by her dreams, although the ‘predictions’ within generally proved so vague as to be useless, or their relevance became clear only after the fact.

Now, at the age of 18, her training is finished, and she is a full priest within the temple, although the hierarchy has yet to assign her a permanent role. Although she has lived within Kaer Maga for the past four years, she knows little of the city outside the Godsmouth Cathedral, having only rarely ventured out during her training and then usually under the careful supervision of more experienced priests.
