And we're still looking for people to join up and sail the seas.

Scarab Sages

Still looking for guys and gals interested in sailing the 7 seas and kicking butt. :D

Scarab Sages

My fellow gamers, glad you took a moment to check out my post, I’m honored.

We are running the Skulls and Shackles campaign Thursdays from 11AM till 4:30PM and are looking for a few more swabs for the good ship Wormwood. We started at the beginning of August so we are still in the early stages of the game. The group has been together for a few years but we are more than willing to embrace new people, but not in a creepy way. :D

Most of us are either married or in long term relationships and have families that may interrupt sessions from time to time. So we are understanding if new players have things come up that might keep them from playing in every session, but please make an effort or at least let us know if you can’t make it ahead of time. I said please, right?

A little bit about us. The group enjoys an even split of combat, problem solving and role-playing, with a healthy amount of kibitzing during the session. In general we game to be social but we also really enjoy the sense of adventure it provides. So, much like other gaming groups we are a group of friends that get together to kick some butt in the name of goodness.

There are four of us but it would be nice to have more to share our experiences. We are more than willing to accommodate any experience level so don’t let a lack of exposure to the system intimidate you. Everyone is friendly and more than willing to make new people feel welcome.

If you are interested please feel free to drop a line here or PM me through the board.

Thanks all

Scarab Sages

My crew is looking for new players. We're an established group that has been playing for several years now. Every Thursday 11AM-4:30PM is when we play and if you are interested please feel free to drop me a line through the board.

Scarab Sages

Hey Bud, my group is currently playing the Skulls and Shackles path using the pathfinder rules (of course). We play every Thursday from about 11AM til 4:30PM. If that sounds like something you'd be into drop a line.

Hello my fellow Louisville Area gamers,
I wanted to let everyone know that there will be a gamer meet up at the Louisville Game Shop on Friday February the 26th at about 6pm and again on the 27th at about 3 pm. (The Louisville Game Shop is located at 925 Baxter Avenue, in Louisville, Ky, in the 40204 Zip code.) The goal is to promote gaming in the area and to get people together in order to build a stronger community of gamers. We will be playing some board/card games but mostly just talking and getting to know one another. So if you live in the Louisville, Kentucky area please feel free to drop in and say hello. There will be GMs looking for players and some players looking for games so it could be a good place to recruit. Who knows, you may find that rare gamer who actually plays that obscure game you are interested in running.

My goal with getting people together is to have a place where gamers can meet each other face to face and discuss topics that are important to them: game mastering tips, plot/story construction ideas and the like. I want people to be able to find each other and keep up with their favorite hobby. Because the more games there are out there, the more people are gaming, and with more people gaming, the more chance that people will be able to find the game they want to play/run.

So please feel free to show up and hang out or bring your favorite board/card game and get some people to play. Who knows, you may just make a friend or two.
See you there.
Jester

PS. If you have any questions please feel free to drop me a line here http://www.louisvillerpg.com/forum/
By the way I'm Death_Jester there also.

Far and away the best entry I've seen thus far. Keep up the excellent work Jim.

Scarab Sages

You know I'm all about the undead having played a character that wanted to become a lich. So, as a GM, I'm all for a new undead in my bag of tricks to use aginst my players. The only thing that could make this better is a Cthulhu tie in.

Keep up the great work buddy.

I agree with Tabla that the Cover rules are cumbersome at best and will slow game play considerably. The chained-feats will also put an undue stress on the DM that will have to keep track of which of his bad guy mob used what feats last round. This will quickly become a DM’s nightmare of bookkeeping. I'm very happy that you have released the Alpha Document to the public so that we could provide some feedback on the game system.

I don't know about the racial stuff as much as a lot of people seem to have an issue with the way humans are over balanced in 3.5. I never noticed it much but then again I've only played humans so far. Not because they are the best mechanically to play but I came out of 2nd edition where there was no reason to play a human at all. So for me it was a great opportunity to see them become playable again.

By the way Ki the CMB is Combat Maneuver Bonus P.41 which is replacing the Grapple, Bull Rush ECT.

And I agree that the blackguard should be the 20-level-class for LE "paladins."

No argument from me. I have ran an all Evils campaign a few years back and this would have saved me no end of grief. One of the players wanted to be a Blackguard but had to first play a Paladin in order to get there. It was quite a bit of work to keep her apart from the rest of the group until it was time for her to "fall". It was fun to watch but a train wreck on the DMing side of things.

Erik Mona wrote:

I do wonder how spells would work for this, though. 9 different "paladin" spell lists strikes me as:

a) A lot of work.
B) A lot of space in the book for stuff I will never use.
C) Perhaps more trouble than it is worth.

Hmmmm.

You know this could be a Pathfinder Cronicle suppliment and/or Web Enhancement/PDF. That at least would take care of taking up space in the core rule book.

I remember the Paramander/Paramandyr being a very cool option and a good way to introduce some ambiguity into a world that was a little too black and white. Of course this was some 25 years or so ago and since I've discovered lots more to add grey to my worlds. :D

Overall you may be right about the time and effort required to make this a viable product but I think it would add variety to the setting. It also gives the world a feeling that it may never have. However, if this doesn't fit with Golarion then no amount of talking will convince you otherwise.

I would still ask that the other requests I have made be considered still even if the many Holy Champions does not fit.

Thanks for your time,
Jester

You know I had not thought of that possibility but you make a good point. Mind you I'm not wild about the "chained feats" to begin with but this really is going to make my DMing a lot harder but understand I'm biased already. I have a lot to keep in mind to begin with this is only going to add to that load. I hope the play test material and or GameMastery products have a way to help me keep track of this stuff when I'm running a game.

Scarab Sages

For Paladins I would hope you would incorporate the article in Kobold Quarterly about the replacing the Paladin’s Special Mount with some other ability to give the class a little more variety. Most of the times I’ve played a Paladin it has never been a big help to me other then getting me from place to place.

Jason Bulmahn wrote:

As to the original post in this thread. I hear your concerns about Paladins of non-LG alignments. For this to work, I feel that they would need to be specific classes. This is something we have tossed around the design pit a number of times (primarily in reference to the Hellknight). I am not sure that this solution is right for the core paladin. This may be a bigger sacred cow for me than it is for others.

Thoughts?

I feel that the Paladin should always be Lawful Good and remain so.

If we can't get non LG paladins, (Heck, even if we can) can we please, in the name of all the fictional gods *please* get a code of conduct that is clear enough that there not at the whim of every DM out there?

I've seen Paladins wholly hamstrung by there code because they had to subdue orks and evil cultists, secure them as prisoners and escort them to some manner of lawful authority of loose there powers. I've seen the rights and wrongs of killing evil cultists rage more feircly than any battle.

If Paladin deserves to be a full class it also deserves to have it made clear just where the line is that must not be overstepped. (My personal thought is that there redundant, 'Holly warrior' can be done just as well by a Cleric)

I too would like to see some guidelines put out for their code so that it was codified a bit more. I know that some believe that it should very from deity to deity and that is fine but something like a general guideline would be nice. I play a lot of paladin/holy knight types and given a choice it is my default character class so I have a lot vested in the outcome of this decision.

Dagonet wrote:
An old issue of Dragon Magazine (106, I think. . . ?) included Paladin-variants for the alignments besides LG and CE. As I recall, each sub-class switched out a small number of abilities from the generic template and replaced them with more thematic stuff.

In Dragon #106 there was an article called “A Plethora of Paladins and it had sub-classes from Lawful Neutral to Chaotic Neutral. It was easily one of my favorite articles ever. I would love to see a new group of core classes based on this concept not necessarily this article in particular. As long as they were not called Paladins I would have no problem with it at all.

As for the whole Neutral and Chaotic Paladins thing I would remind everyone that they will be serving deities of the same alignment and as such would be acting in exactly the same way their god would too. So from the divine stand point as long as they are acting in accordance to their god’s portfolio and or wishes they should be allowed to continue to enjoy the divine favor of their god.

I don’t have any specific ability thoughts for these classes but I will return as ideas come to me.

Peace All, Jester

I happen to like the various experience charts and feel that they would add something to my personal campaigns. Being able to speed up or slow down the advancement of the players could help sustain the life my campaigns quite a bit.

I feel that this is something I would certainly use even if I do not use the rest of the rules systems introduced in the pathfinder alpha document.

What needs to be fixed by 3.75 or (as we, at the home boards, are calling it) 3P? Well there are few things that I can think of and I will try to take my personal preferences out of this as much as I can and stick to actual rules that are clunky or don't work very well.

Some pet pieves of mine are Grapple(Already addressed 'nuff Said).

Footnote rules that hide on you. Did you know that you get Synergy bonus to turn checks if you have Knowledge Religion 5+? No, neither did I until I reread the skill a few weeks ago.

The power creep of Core classes outside of the Core Rule Books. I know this is not a focus of this set of rules but it annoys me.

The number of feats needs to be pruned.

Skills need to be consolidated and I mean even more than what 3p has already done. (I mean 3P still have deception and disguise as seperarate things and it would seem they could be folded into one another but that is not the focus of this topic.)

High level characters and their playability are just a big pain in the current version of 3.5. I have a buddy that just cannot get into playing anything over 12 level because it is not fun. I think it is combination of keeping track of lots of powers and the sheer power creep that happens. That power curve it not as smooth as it could be.

Determining cover, illumination, concealment, and invisibility are all really an annoyance too. Every time they come up it stops the game while we look up the rules. I know that 3P is tying to fix the cover thing but I cannot say that I like it much either.

These are just a few things that come to mind right off but I'm sure there will be more and I'll be back when I remember them.

Peace

Jester

In an other thread I suggested spells be per encounter rather than per day for that exact reason.

An encounter is to be designed upon the assumption that PCs have access to all of their abilities. So turn that around in actual play and make it so.

If a DM wants to weaken a party before the BBEG part just have the two encounters combine as one. Stretch it out over initiative to keep it all one encounter.

Some have said that is too much of an increase in power, but in all honesty I don't see that at all.

What is different between making it encounter based and per day based where the PCs retreat after every 2-3 encounters to come back all fresh and smelling clean?

Nothing really, and it is more fun.

I'm sure that this has been mentioned before but the current version of Star Wars has a system like this for Force Powers. It is per encounter also and it seems to work well. The real issue for this is the way magic works in Dungeons and Dragons. You would have to get rid of the Spells per day and damage based on spell level. Heck, while you're at just give rid of levels all together. Make the magic system work a little more on an "effect" based system and allow the players to create their own spells on the fly with a special system. I know that leads to abuse but so does dropping all your really big spells in every encounter. Could you imagine a 20th Level wizard with all of his spells all the time. By the fighter with his 15-20ft Move rate got to the enemy they would be toast with him moping up the twitching corpses.

Unfortunately I don't have a solution for this short of creating my own rules system but I would love to see some suggestions that would work in the d20 system.

I have been working on an editable character sheet for the new PatherfinderRPG. It seems that Adobe Creative Suite comes with this neat program call Designer and you can make forms with it. Who knew? You can view, edit and prints forms in regular adobe reader but for some reason they will not let you save them. Does anyone know how you make them savable to your own hard drive without having to send via email?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would change the rule to allow the Cleric to choose to include their Allies and or Enemies in the effect of the Turning. After all the Cleric can choose to include or exclude him\herself as the rules are currently written.

Scarab Sages

I find myself in agreement with the majority of this group in regards to the Fly Skill. As a GM I KNOW that I would never use it. I think that putting the maneuverability class in the spell would be fine. Also making the Druid or any other character taking the shape of a flying creature be limited to that creature’s flight ability would be fine. There is no need for a new skill that very few are going to spend a slot on.

Scarab Sages

I'm very happy with this turn of events and looking forward to getting to play more in the world you are creating. So far the Rise of the Runelords has shown nothing but quality work and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with a re-imagined 3.P.

Much like the poster above I have decided not to convert to 4.0 due to the sheer amount of money I have tied up in 3.5. Since this will be the logical successor to and compatible with that system you can guess where my money will be going.

Thanks for your time Jason it is greatly appreciated.

Scarab Sages

Much like Ki_Ryn above I’d like to know that my time and efforts will not go unrecognized if I choose to simply state them and not overstate them. I have left several boards because of this in the past and if I don’t feel that my time is considered valuable or worth wile to those asking for it then I will stop giving it.

When Egos get involved it is all to easy to resort to a ”I’m right, you’re wrong” kind of shouting match. I know that it will be impossible to get around that kind of thing completely but it would be good to know that someone impartial is weighing both arguments based on their quality rather than their vehemence.

If you couldn't tell I'm Watcher's other player.

Given all of the information that you have heard so far about the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons, I would love to hear your thoughts on the following three questions:

1) Do you plan to convert to the new edition of D&D?

2) If Paizo converts its RPG products to 4.0, how will that affect your purchasing patterns for our products?

3) If Paizo does not convert its RPG products to 4.0, how will that affect your purchasing patterns for our products?

Greetings Mr. Mona and all,

1) I do not intend to convert to the new edition of Dungeons and Dragons at all. My home games will be ran in 3.5 or another games system. I have a considerable amount of money invested in the current edition. To reinvest represents a serious long-term drain in my resources. Something I can assure you that many on this board are loath to do in the face of recently economic news. In addition I see very little wrong or "broken" with the current rule set so there is very little dissatisfaction driving me to a new product. So unless someone else is going to run a 4.0 campaign for me in the future I fell very little impetus to convert all of my work over (yet again) to a new system.

2) I would stop my subscriptions to your existing game products and discontinue my patronage. Please do not take this as a threat as it is not meant to be. I'm simply saying that I would find the 4.0 products to be incompatible with what I was doing. However if the products where significantly "rules light" I would consider picking them up. However I don't know that they would have the same priority as they would for me now.

3) I would continue with my subscriptions and still support the site by purchasing items that I thought would help my game. Much as I'm doing now. I love the stuff you are doing with the Pathfinder Adventure Paths and I'm really looking forward to seeing what is going on with the Setting. I hope there is a long line of products planned for it but if they are going to be 4th edition I will have to pass. If I'm going to spend the time and energy to convert an existing setting over to my rule system I'm just going to create my own instead. Once again this is not meant to be antagonistic but just a simple statement of how I feel and what will realistically happen in my house.

Mr. Mona I have really appreciated your work on Greyhawk and look forward to seeing more Pathfinder stuff in the future. I think you and your colleagues are really on the ball with the feeling you convey in your settings. I wish you and this company the best of luck no matter what the future may hold for the hobby market.

Peace
Jester.

Greetings everyone,

There’s going to be a Louisville, KY gamer meet-up on Friday, February 8 at 6:30PM.

Full location details
Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar
3900 Shelbyville Rd
St Matthews, KY 40207
(near Breckenridge Lane)
(502) 899-7732

The meet-up is a chance for us gamers to get out from behind the table, shoot the breeze, and hang out for a while. We can have some wings and (if you are of age) a beer or two. It should be a good time and lots of people are expected to show so I wanted to extend the invite to everyone I could find who would have an interest (thus the cross-posting). Colin from the Louisville Game Shop has offered to let us use the gaming space in the back, so if people are interested in a more gamer-friendly atmosphere later in the evening, that’s an option.

My goal with these meetings is just to get gamers together to talk and meet one another. The more interaction we have, the more games get sparked. And with more games going on who knows maybe you will get to play in one. I see “gamers looking for games” advertisements all the time and this should be a chance for people to meet up and make that happen.

For more information and discussion, see LousivilleRPG.com, “Meetups” topic.

Thanks for your time
Jester

The group I run will be playing 3.5 for some time to come just because of the amount of money and time we have invested. Since I'm the primary GM for the crew they play whatever I run. And for the foreseeable future that will be the system we have now.

Once the Age of Worms is over however we may go to a different system (read non-DnD) Genre.

Scarab Sages

Greetings All,

My crew and I will continue to play 3.5. I only intend to run adventures in 3.5. I have invested enough time/money into this hobby and putting away some 50+ books because the editions change is a little silly at this stage in the game.

I will support Paizo as long as they are putting out 3.5 and supported products but once the change over to 4th edition happens I will have to vote with my dollars. I'm sure we both understand it is a purely financial situation and no hard feelings on either side.

I hope this is what you were looking for Eric as I don't have much time to be flowery in my praise of your good works with both Pathfinder and your earlier work keeping Greyhawk alive and exciting.

Peace Jester.

If there were to be a second Dragon Compendium I would ask that you please, Please include the “Plethora of Paladins” from dragon 106 and the “Anti-Paladin” from way back in issue 39. These two articles would have transformed the first Dragon Compendium, for me, from a book that I will get, into a book that I must have at all costs.

I know you get requests like this all the time but I have a special love of these two articles and would love to see the brought up to date in 3.5.

Thanks Mike for keeping hope alive buddy.
