Dawn's Character Sheet
![]() I fully endorse Genie's response. And yeah, most main stream military is going to have an issue the first time they're in a close quarters engagement. (This often doesn't apply to behind enemy lines, special forces, etc) Most of us were involved with the gate assault, and the attack by the imperial army, followed by Calia's rescue. So most of us have been blooded. I don't know that I would call this neutral territory. Didn't we pass a forest that is known to be enemy controlled where one of our other patrols is assumed to have been killed or captured? While Dawn isn't sadistic, she also doesn't have any hangups about it either. Her duty requires her to follow the military's established rules, but she's open to a flexible interpretation. As far as Dawn is concerned, the knight's callous and unprovoked attack on Jacob has pretty much painted all imperial knights into the category of "shoot first, ask questions of someone else." Her first impression just wasn't very good for the empire. ![]()
Dawn's Character Sheet
![]() My perceptions, not the GM's! So, we're in "Indian Country" this generally means that slightly different rules apply. A military unit has rules of engagement. Often times in neutral or friendly areas this means no shooting unless shot at. However, we're in hostile territory. This means we would likely have a ROE that allowed us to fire first. In this case, the instant the guard's aimed or threatened any of our team their life was forfeit. Now, once rendered as a non-threat (i.e. captured), different rules come into play. First, none of the people in this world are signatories of any treaties or rules of conduct. There are no Geneva Conventions. We may follow our rules for our own ethics and morals. We do not have any expectation that anyone here will follow them. Even though we are just a reserve unit, we're actually operating in a very special circumstance. Consider the first encounter when the enemy invaded. We certainly had the soldiers and capability to handle captured and surrendering individuals. Same thing with the second battle when we breached the gate and established our beachhead. The third battle was the same way. After the battle we could capture injured or surrendered enemy soldiers and deal with them. However, we are a small, isolated unit. We do not have the capability to accept surrender. We don't have the manpower to guard, nor the resources and space to house captured enemies. While this doesn't automatically mean killing any of them, it also doesn't automatically mean releasing them either. If it was a local militia and a misunderstanding, we would likely release them. But this guard is a different situation. From Brona and Calia we know that the imperial guard remains an active threat to the success of our mission. I don't see a difference in killing him while laying on the inn floor than taking him out from ambush with a sniper rifle, to sneaking into his room and cutting his throat while he was sleeping. Let's keep in mind, he is a direct representative of the empire that invaded and slaughtered civilians, including children. So while we may be required to follow the Geneva Convention and other relevant rules of conduct, we are operating under "behind enemy lines" and in a small specialist unit. ![]()

![]() well... The standard repeating crossbow required a ready maneuver between shots and did less damage than a standard crossbow, but could hold 10 bolts. (Low tech pg 73) A standard crossbow did thr+5, while the repeating crossbow was only thr+1. 1d6+10 is also equal to 3d6+3 when doing dice+ conversion. Which means that the guard has a crossbow that puts out about 33% more damage than our 2d6+2 pistols (average of 13.5 for the crossbow compared to 9 for most of the pistols). A crossbow also doesn't have a piercing modifier and is considered standard piercing, while our pistols are large piercing and have greater penetration. 3d6+3 means the crossbow has a pull of ST >34! A crossbow that was loaded with a cocking lever took 20 1-second ready actions (basic 278), and was limited to ST of 4 over your own, while the repeating crossbow required ready actions between attacks. The benefit of the repeating crossbow was a higher ROF while sacrificing range and penetration. Ranged weapon quality normally adds to accuracy, which requires aiming, which is different than a ready action. Aiming requires a specific target. Technically, the guard was using a wait maneuver that can then be converted to attack, feint, all-out-attack, or ready. So considering that the guard probably doesn't have a str of 30, isn't using a ready action between each shot, and can get acc bonuses when not aiming... This pretty much means the crossbow is magical. Therefore all rules are kinda out, or at least changed. A very fine repeating crossbow should only be doing thr+1 damage with an accuracy of 1+2. The ST of the weapon can be increased, probably magically. Which means that the crossbow allows the user to outgun us. Not saying there's anything wrong with this. We are all rusty with our GURPS. As far as the guard shooting through the tables? Well they all know that you use wood as a target because the bolts don't go through it. We're using guns, and we know that you shoot to the sides of the door and window before rushing in to clear the building. ![]()

![]() Here is a good reference for everyone Combat Cards. It would help speed things up for combat if players would post their actions for a couple of rounds, and note how many rounds. For example, I posted four rounds for Dawn, which takes her up to firing her first shot. We could do it one round at a time, but at the pbp posting rate, that would take a month or two to cover 5-10 seconds. If we all post actions (and mdt shout out if you don't like this suggestion!) up to a die roll required, mdt can move things along as needed. MDT can then resolve combat, and post each round, give anyone that needs to respond a chance to do so, then post the next round, etc. ![]()

We effectively lost any reaction to the first round because we did not explicitly state we were readying oursleves for action. The fast draw skill (specialized by weapon), does allow a draw and attack. GURPS does drill things down to single second actions. Remember all those times when you got frustrated that in the six second or ten second round of other games all you could do was swing once? Or take one 5' step? Well GURPS tries to bring more realism. Swinging a sword is really more like: Ready

We might get some brownie points just by introducing some new ways to do labor intensive jobs. I also want to work on building an anti-drakon device. If these creatures are attracted to radio signals, that would mean that something in nature here broadcasts radio waves that are seen as food, shelter, or some other resource. No other reason for it that I can think of. Dawn thinks back now considering the tasks she has seen people doing. She can already think of a couple of things she'd like to check at the blacksmith shop. She wasn't a farmer, but how they irrigate and harvest might be something to look at. ![]()

![]() I'm kinda surprised. I can see a bonfire from a long ways away, at night. In the day I can't see it from as far. I can see a flashlight pretty close up in the day, but at night it's further away. Our radios operate at frequencies of 300 to 30 terahertz. "radio waves are 1000 megahertz to 50 megahertz. The reason our radios have an antenna that's a meter long is because the signal of the radio wave is around 1 meter for VHF channels. That's also why a submarine trails out an antenna that's really long. It's really amazing, and probably has a lot to do with this magic stuff that they can even process any type of signal. Dawn points back at the LAV's whip antenna's, they're long to generate the signal to reach distances. What I'm wondering is how far into the spectrum they can see. We can't see infrared or ultraviolet, which is just above and below the visible spectrum. Can they see microwaves? ![]()

Dawn's Character Sheet
![]() That can easily happen, especially when players are well rounded individuals and the NPC's are flat, focused combatants. One thing about GURPS is that the GM shouldn't really use CP as a determining factor of "equality." In D&D type games, the NPC is often a level or two higher than the average of four players. That's due to the number of attacks being received and delivered. Metagaming, I'd expect that the Lady would likely be at least 1000 CP, probably closer to 1500 dependent on just how much magic she has. For instance, a sword, regardless of it's armor divisor is still a muscle powered weapon. a d6 damage is still a d6. To have peeled back the armor and left a nasty gash indicates strength that's definitely superhuman. And if the sword itself was enchanted to do multiple dice of damage, that's still CP to the NPC. We'll just have to be careful to play scouts and not frontliners. I play in another GURPS game with a newer GM that didn't realize that limiting six players to non-military armor and weapons was going to result in a very lopsided encounter against a couple of squads of space marines. We ended up having to do a major retcon. The range that the mages can cast combat spells is concerning. It's well beyond the typical engagement range of squad weapons. Otherwise, we'll just have to see how it goes. ![]()

Dawn turns to Alsaria, and pulls her ka-bar from its sheath, she is careful to do this in as non-threatening a away as she can. I could cut that tree down with this knife, but it isn't a good use of this knife. Nor would it be speedy. But it would get the job done. This is better suited for trimming branches for a nice staff. Dawn slides the knife home, and points to one of the axes strapped to the side of the LAV, that axe would cut the tree down much easier, but would be a poor tool to slice fruit. She looks back at the rock in the middle of the field. Unfortunately, my tools would remove most of that crop along with the rock and it would take a while. ![]() Assuming a furlon is equal to a furlong, or 660 feet, an average bowman can reliably shoot 120 feet, while their well trained can reach 660 feet. The range penalties would be a -8 and -13 range respectively. Before other modifiers, the base skill needed would be 18 and 23 for a 50% hit rate on a SM 0 target. Assuming 3 seconds to aim each round with a longbow (acc +3), we can reduce that to 12 and 17 skills. To get a 90% hit rate at that distance, the skills would need to be at least a 14/19 after modifiers. ![]()

To this point, Dawn's conversational tones had been light-hearted, even when she pushed the C sister's. Now her tone becomes much more formal. The Empire chose to come to Our world, kill Our people. Without provocation. There will be a reckoning. And until We know how this happened and can stop the Empire, or anyone else with ill-intent, from crossing over, We will do what We must to protect Our World, Our People. Dawn waves at Calia, speak with your journeyman, she has seen our wooden swords and bronze knives. You want to protect your world? Then help us. Stand in our way, and you may find yourself swept from the surface of this world in a rain of fire the likes of which you can not imagine. That one... Dawn points at Calea, makes threats against wolf cubs, thinking she sees the mother wolf. If our mission is not successful with our toy swords, then others will come. Dawn sweeps an arm around to encompass the village, their weapons would consume this village in seconds and leave not one stone stacked upon another. You can kill me. I have no doubt that here, in this room, you have the advantage. I am but the tip of the vanguard. Hope that you do not choose to make us a threat. Dawn considers for a moment, and realizes they weren't given any specific orders about protecting general home world information. Our group of 'play' soldiers numbers over 300,000. Our regular military numbers over a million. Our Elites, well we have two hundred thousand of them. And that is just our one country, we aren't the biggest country, or the biggest military. Dawn takes a moment to center herself after that speech. Maybe a demonstration of our play weapons is in order. Dawn is letting her patriotic pride, and military camaraderie to influence her response. Idealistically secure in the knowledge that her death would not be in vain. ![]()

Dawn winks and grins at Laine, and she's not beholden to anyone either. In a loud stage whisper, Dawn adds I was in the middle of trying to woo her to our side. Be all you can be! It's not just a job, it's an adventure! Dawn laughs, remembering the recruiter she met with in high school. Find any maps? Dawn has no problem switching topics and simply expects the men to try their best at keeping up.
