I'm taking a hiatus from Paizo for a while. I'll probably be back at some point, so just shove my characters into the metaphorical attic until I return. Nothing personal against any of you, I just need a bit of a break.

See you all around,

Actually, we'd have at least 4(from your 48 Fellowship). So, yeah. We might be better off with the Oath of the Weapon.

I vote for Quintus as squad leader. He's fought 'nids before, in any case. More than most of us can say.

The Astartes Bolter(Godwyn pattern) is one of the things Techmarines(and every class other than assault marines and devastators, for that matter) get for free as part of their starting equipment. You don't need to requisition it, same way you don't need to requisition your power armor.

Male Humanoid Lurker 1/ Nerd 1

For the Requisition, I'm thinking a chainsword or two for the more melee-inclined among us, if only because I'm paranoid about our combat knives not being up to snuff if we get into close combat, and definitely some flash and blind grenades to cover our entrances and exits. Some demolition charges and/or cluster mines might prove useful to have too, depending on the exact circumstances of our mission and whether anyone knows how to set explosives. Maybe some special ammo too.

Didn't notice this. So long, Fabes, and good luck with your other games.

So, we now have two Defenders, a Leader and a Striker(that's also a pretty good Controller). Assuming bmars posts some more if I poke him in Xabulba's game, that means that we've got two strikers that can do some decent control. Sad to see Fabes go, but at least we should be able to handle ourselves just fine without him.

They can if they can find a ritual that hasn't been rendered powerless by too many people knowing it. It's a use of Lore and works like temporarily gaining Sponsored Magic for the use of a single specific spell. Otherwise it works the same as any other form of magic. You need to use Lore to actually find the ritual, though.

Doesn't apply for Deirdre, so I'll go on a tangent vs with her scream attack. I had the idea that it was a reasonably strong attack, not super powerful but something that might let her hold her own / contribute in a group. I had the idea that 7 was a pretty decent attack. Considering I spent a fate point to get it up there and I could only have rolled 2 more successes max, I think that means 9 is the best I could possibly do if all the dice came up in my favor. Is that a decent attack? I didn't expect to take a troll down with one blast of that by any means, but the fact that it was not even inconvenienced by the attempt surprised me. Was that a consequence of trolls being super badassed (I realize I cannot bypass their catch with that attack), or poor strategy (complete lack of any strategy I should say) on my part? Let's say I took those 7 successes and instead had tried to impart the condition of "stunned" or "deafened" to the troll I hit. Would that have been more likely to have any success?

Yeah, it's a Good(+3) attack that's equivalent to hitting everyone in a cone with a baseball bat, so yeah it's pretty good. They were only mostly unaffected because they were really damn tough and could just soak your attack without taking any Consequences. Really, you probably won't take someone out in one hit unless they take a bad enough Consequence from it to want to concede, just because of how the stress system works.

Also, using it to put an aspect on instead of attacking (and not just dealing enough damage to make them take a consequence) would be a Maneuver, so you wouldn't get the two dice for making a Weapon(2) attack. Otherwise it's just about the same.

Quote:
Another question- cold iron is anathema to faeries. In game terms it bypasses their catch. Deirdre currently has no powers with a catch. Does that mean she would have no penalty for carrying around a cold iron knife if she wanted to? Should it have some IC consequences even if it had no mechanical ones or would you say she's just too human to be bothered by cold iron at present. (Caveat- I'm not familiar with the rules and didn't go searching before I wrote that so I may be missing the obvious.)

No Catch, so you can carry one around without violating it. Smerg would probably compel Banshee Bartender a lot because you're fey-blooded and carrying around a chunk of cold iron and that's bound to have some side effects, but it won't negate any of your powers or anything.

Alternatively, if you want a character that works similar in concept to the bomb-tossing, mutagen-drinking Alchemist class, you could reflavor the Druid into something like an Alchemist quite easily. (This assumes your DM is fine with you doing that, of course.) For the powers you can use in human form, just make them quick alchemical concoctions instead of primal magic. (Let's say they expire a few seconds after you mix them, just to explain why you can't just hand them off to someone else.) Instead of Wild Shape turning you into an animal, you just drink a potion, turn into Mr Hyde and start beating things with your staff. Then just switch Ritual Caster with Alchemy because an alchemist without Alchemy is silly and you should be good to go.

Of course, if you don't want to reflavor a class too much, or you don't care that much about it playing like the Alchemist class, just play an Artificer and take Master Mixer as one of your feats. It's the closest to what you want otherwise.

What's are some of the differences between 4e and Essentials?

For one, you know how 4e fixed the whole Quadratic Wizard Linear Fighter problem by putting everyone on the same power curve and giving Fighters just as many cool powers to use as Wizards? Well, the Wizard subclasses in Essentials has roughly the same number of cool powers as a regular wizard. The Fighter subclasses, well, they have two or three ways of augmenting a basic attack and not that much else. The 4e fans dislike it because it's a return to the 3.5 days of fighters just hitting things the same way while spellcasters have all the cool stuff, and 3.5 fans hate it because they still don't like 4e.

I could go into further detail, but that sums up most people's issues with Essentials.

Celestial Healer wrote:

Hey, half of Essentials is good! Really, it's biggest problem is that it's caught in the gray area between 3.5/Pathfinder's game design and 4e's game design, thus not really satisfying either group that much. Personally, I just think of it as 4e's Unearthed Arcana equivalent. It's much less annoying that way.

Do you know how giddy I am at how well I'm rolling in this fight? I haven't been hit yet, and assuming the Auldmaw has at best 30 Wounds I've taken out half of it's health. Truly, the Emperor takes care of his own.

Male Humanoid Lurker 1/ Nerd 1

Say, if/when we get into another fight, think we could maybe get a rough map so we might be able to figure out where things are in relation to each other? No need for anything fancy (I mean, Google Docs is much more than enough for what I'm talking about), but I still have only have a vague idea where anything is in relation to anything else in this fight.

(Only linking to a map I made for a different pbp to show something simple that's much more complex than I'm hoping for. Really, at most I'm hoping for a rough sketch of where we are and everyone's place in it. This, basically. Guy A and some civilians are in one place, Guy B is two zones away, Guy C and Guy D are near Guy B but are still a zone away.)

And the fight (probably) begins. Unless it dodges, I probably have first blood. Here's hoping I won't need to spend many more fate points.

Smerg wrote:
Personally, saying that they fae could be Dimmuntive Size is going out of the 'zone' on the discussion of what a person is spending points for what ability they are getting.

Yeah, the bit about Diminutive Size was because your example hinged something tiny being seen because it was bad at Decieve.

Quote:
I am not even sure the Refresh value on that particular power is 'correct' since a +4 to Stealth is the equivalent to tagging two aspects. You get an additional +2 to Alertness and Investigation. While your physical damage is limited, I wouldn't be surprised that some min-maxer wouldn't use it as a cheap way to make the 'Leprechaun Wizard from Hell'.

Yeah, and you need to make a Might roll to move anything larger than a paperclip. It could be stopped with a coffee cup.

Quote:
In a similar way saying that Little People are Fae so they wouldn't bother with Veils because they are on another plane of existance (inside the Nevernever) doesn't help anything or stay within the novels with Toot-toot and all the fellow fae that seem to come out of the woodwork when Pizza is available.

Yeah, and pixies have Decieve at +3, which means it would have a much better chance of actually fooling someone than the ones with +1 you used for an example. I only brought Diminutive Form up in the first place because all the fey I can find in the books are either competent enough at Glamours to trick most of the people most of the time, small and stealthy enough to not get seen in the first place, or enough of a combat monster to not care.

---------------------------

But, really, I'm not skilled enough at this system yet to offer counterarguments to the rest of your post or to tell which of our interpretations is more balanced. Since you're the GM and I'm just a player that likes arguing over inane things, I cede the point to you and will go try to find how other people have interpreted Glamours.

This would lead to quite a few little people being spotted all over the place.

They'd usually be on a completely different plane of existence. No one would see them because they wouldn't even be here. (Besides, they'd probably just use Stealth to hide in a bush of something if they do come to this plane.)

Quote:
The way that I have suggested would have the Veil 1 work which will hide the little people from most casual people that don't go looking for the fae since most people have Alertness Mediocre +0 and if doing something else this is a supplementary action making it -1 (that means the person would have to get very lucky to get close to their maximum and score a +3 on the dice to exceed the Veil strength). Further, the little person if in trouble could 'push' their meagre talent to a Veil 2 or 3 but just accept some backlash if the dice are not favorable as they become tired from the effort of fooling humans.

Or the little faerie uses the +4 bonus to Stealth from Diminutive Size and maybe one of the scene's aspects to get another +2 if things are looking bad and no one will ever see them even if their Stealth is only Average. Sure, it would be seen if it was in an empty room, but why would it be in a completely empty room anyway?

What I'm saying is, the problems you say would be caused by my interpretation aren't really problems because the things that aren't good at Glamours wouldn't be using Glamours to hide in the first place. Either they'd just hide, or they don't care enough to hide what they are even if they were competent at veils.

EDIT: Sorry if this comes off badly, by the way. I guess I am a bit of a rules lawyer. Then again, the OOC thread for a game that's in a new system for everyone is just about the best place you can get into a silly rules argument as long as it stays civil.

Male Humanoid Lurker 1/ Nerd 1

I see your point, I just don't know if it's right. It's just that the entries for Glamours/Greater Glamours don't say a thing about how you make the veils/seemings beyond that you use either Deceit or Discipline to oppose efforts to discover the veil/seeming. I just assumed that it meant that Glamours just added new uses for those skills, like a more powerful version of those stunts that let you use one skill in place of a different one. Besides, if they worked exactly like spellcasting(use Conviction to determine how powerful it is, roll Discipline to determine whether you control the spell, etc), you'd think they would at least mention Conviction in the Skills Affected line. Hence, why I assumed it wasn't using the spellcasting rules.

(Also, all fey that only use the powers in the book can't make a house invisible without using thaumaturgy. Even Greater Glamours can only put a veil over a small group of people at most.)

Male Humanoid Lurker 1/ Nerd 1

Glamours are not spells. They're just another use for the Deceit skill (or Discipline). That's why it's good. You can do it all day, every day.

EDIT: One of us is wrong. Since they would of said if Glamours had the same costs as spellcasting, I'm going to assume it's you. Wait, no, it's in the Faerie Magic category, so who knows?
