Backstory&Fluff:
Appearance: Well into his fifties, Dareon is a tall and dignified man. His hair grayed long ago, yet it remains full and thick. He has a pronounced jaw, complete with chin dimple, and piercing bright hazel eyes. He is thin, but not emaciated like some men his age, he's managed to remain healthy into his old age. He wears the livery of a professor, fine but not ostentatious robes.
Background: Born in 4656 to a fairly wealthy family in Westcrown, Dareon didn't have very many problems growing up. He was well-provided-for, he had a loving family, and he had lessons of every sort. He attended the nearby Wiscrani Academy, paid for by his parents so that he could experience a plethora of disciplines. He attended this academy for years, learning from the best professors of language, magic, history, mathematics, and martial skills. He excelled at public speaking, and often debated with his teachers on the difference between textbook and applied learning. He also excelled at dueling, and although he was never the best, he was good enough to earn honors in it, and best most of his friends and colleagues. In his mid teens, he graduated from the Academy and began to work as a freelance tutor. He enjoyed teaching others, but being young, he still wanted more. The phrase "be careful what you wish for" could hardly be more apt, as soon after his graduation, in 4673, a small cult of Lamashtu began to ferment in Westcrown. Its leader, simply through coincidence and convenience, inflicted Dareon's mother with a terrible affliction. Over the course of several months, she sickened and bloated, until eventually a terrible and revolting beast burst from her belly, killing her. The beast stalked through the home, also killing his father. When it reached his room, though, he was ready for it. His lessons had given him skills enough to defend himself, and with a blade and spell, he killed the thing. He brought his grievance to the Order of the Scourge Hellknight order, and with their help, he rooted out and destroyed the small cult of Lamashtu. With bills piling up, however, after his parents' deaths, he found that he had to pack up and leave his home. He sold his family's house, as well as everything he couldn't carry, paid his bills, and set off on the road. Dareon wasn't entirely sure what to do with himself, but despite that he cheerfully hummed his way on his own trails. As many are, he was drawn to Absalom, and following that was drawn to the Grand Lodge of the Pathfinder Society. Fascinated by the wonders he found within, and the depth and variety of adventurers he found, he immediately applied. After a tough applications process, and a confirmation test that involved capturing a live hydra, he was accepted. Thus began a long career at the Pathfinder Society. He had an extremely successful career, even being promoted to Venture Captain. Still, many years of adventuring behind him, and his wealth built up significantly, Dareon retired from the Pathfinder Society, and moved to Korvosa in 4695. He took up a position at the Acadamae, teaching a variety of subjects, and tutored orphans at as many nearby orphanages as his tired feet could get to during the weekends. He was happy, during this time. He had somehow lived through a long life, and now he settled down, and was doing something he loved. He and one of the other professors, a somewhat younger Varisian wizard named Sara, developed a budding romance during this period, and were married in 4699. Unfortunately, she couldn't have kids, but he was still happy. They had as humble a house as you can get in the Heights, near to their workplace, and they loved their work and each other. Everything changed in 4707, with the ascendancy of Queen Ileosa Arabasti, and her short but brutal reign of terror. Dareon did his best to shelter his loved ones from it. Around the culmination of Ileosa's reign, when Grey Maidens walked the streets and the mad queen's plotting was threatening to take everything he loved from him, he retrieved his gear from storage and joined the rebellion against Ileosa. The Grey Maidens found out about his actions, and given that he was a prominent figure in the community, they gathered that making an example of him would serve the community well. They marched to his house, took his wife captive, and demanded that he turn himself in for questioning. Dareon didn't like that. He gathered what allies he could and attacked the detachment of Grey Maidens, slaying three of them himself in a pitched battle. However, at the end, when he was sifting through the corpses, he found one he'd never want to find. Sara's. Mad with grief, he couldn't join in the rest of the battle, instead opting to remain in his house and his tears. The end of Ileosa's reign didn't come quickly enough, and eventually he recovered enough to return to work. He returned a bit more crotchety than his students remembered, but he still made the terror of the Acadamae just that much better. A little more than a year later, he learned of the disappearance of one of his colleagues and friends in Sandpoint, and having been asked to use his built-up vacation hours, he decided to go on a trip. He would discover the reason for his friend's disappearance and take a little break from full-time working. Personality: Quick to smile and even quicker to laugh, Dareon squeezes everything life has got out of it. He is fiercely protective of his loved ones, of his students, and of his city, Korvosa. He has a wide breadth of experience, and is very knowledgeable about a large number of topics. He tries not to show off, and tries not to act too silly, but sometimes his nature gets the better of the veneer of respectability his old age has given him. His Cohort:

COIN:
Appearance: Sydney is a big man, with large stretch marks on his legs and sides signifying a big growth spurt. He used to be among the smallest people he knew. He's fairly average-looking, with brown hair and eyes, although he has a strong build and sharp eyes. Background: Sydney was a street kid for most of his childhood: an orphan. He had to do a lot of unsatisfactory things to live, like stealing often to eat. Eventually he was taken in by an orphanage, and it was here that he met Dareon. Dareon periodically gave lessons on varying subjects at the orphanage, and Sydney took an instant shine to the man. Showing a real aptitude for learning, Dareon took him in for private study. Dareon, liking the boy quite a bit, brought him to the church of Abadar to continue his learning and to have a safe place to live and work, and for introducing him to the God of Wealth after a lifetime of poverty, Sydney is very loyal to Dareon. At first, he only concentrated on physical portions of education, but continued exposure to Dareon interested him in magic, and he began to grow in his divine power. When Dareon decided to go on a little adventure to occupy himself, Sydney quickly volunteered himself. Dareon brought him along to carry his bag. Personality: Sydney is completely loyal to Dareon for getting him off of the streets. Additionally, he is faithful in Abadar's ability to civilize and protect. He is also very compassionate. He gives money to nearly every homeless person he meets, and his spellcasting services are given at as low a cost as his god (and interfaith superiors) would allow. |
