One other comment, guys...the opening encounter of the game will assume that all of the PCs arrive at the same time at The Camp. So, if we just want to assume that you all met up in Bard's Gate and decided to make the trek together (or something along those lines), that would be best.

Hello all,

Well, part one of Greg Vaughan's 'Slumbering Tsar' has finally been released, and it's exciting enough to motivate this thirty-something gamer to dust off his DM's hat. But there's no tabletop group in my world at present, and that means I'd like to run this module as the beginnings of a play by post campaign. But first, since I'm new here, allow me to say a bit about myself by way of introduction. I was introduced to D&D in 1980 by my father (the blue box) and my world has never been the same. In elementary school, I took my Monster Manual to school, and got in trouble because of the nudity in some of the pictures. I love all the classic old TSR modules (In Search of the Unknown was my first), and I've played and/or DM'ed pretty much every edition of the game and most of the campaign settings. In addition to D&D, I've played loads of other RPGs (Warhammer Fantasy, Bushido, Gamma World, Boot Hill, Twilight 2000, Chill, Paranoia, Runequest, Star Frontiers, to name a few). My newest love is Pathfinder, especially the world of Golarion and the brilliant Adventure Paths that the Paizo staff has created (including the ones from Dungeon magazine). In my games, I emphasize storytelling and characterization first; combat, treasure and level advancement, while still important, are secondary. PCs can make choices, and they have real consequences, including sometimes death (followed by prolonged disability). For me, the rules serve the game, and not the other way around (ergo, rules lawyers need not apply for this one).

Now, for those who might still be reading, please read on. You'll want to know what you're getting yourself into before hitting that reply button.

1. I'm looking for five players. Player characters will start out at 7th level, created using Pathfinder RPG rules. The crunchy details are yet to be decided, so please don't get too caught up in that right now. Your character's background is what's going to get you into this game, anyway (see below). Non-evil alignments are preferred, but I may make an exception for a strong character concept. Allowable sources are TBD, but I'm leaning toward sticking as close to core rules only as possible.

2. This is not a first-come first-served game. Each potential player should read the adventure background and suggested plot hooks found in my profile. Please use this material as inspiration to write up a concise but detailed character concept which includes: Name, race/class, physical description, personality, background, and motivation for the character. Feel free to make up any details that you like, but the background should conclude with the character having newly arrived in the Camp. After the recruiting window closes (on Monday October 12th), I will choose the five concepts I like the most, with some (secondary) consideration given to party balance. Ultimately, though, I want the players that I feel will be the best fit for me as a DM. It's nothing personal if you don't get picked.

3. There will be few, if any, combat maps for the game. Combat will be run in a more cinematic style, and I will adjudicate on the fly in matters where positioning is important. PCs will receive the benefit of the doubt in ambiguous cases; I'm not out to deliberately hose anyone. Some of these baddies are tough enough as it is, trust me.

4. The adventure is very much a wide open sandbox. It's up to the players to move things along, as there isn't a 'script' to follow, per se. Players should be active and committed to regular posting.

5. The adventure is very dangerous, and some characters are likely to die at some point. Fair warning not to get too attached to your PC, especially if you don't have sense enough to retreat when needed.

6. Players will roll all their own dice, using the handy new die roller code here on the site. Like this: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19

7. I don't really like monks, so I wouldn't make one if you want to play in this game. I'm just sayin'.

Okay, that's enough from me. If you're still reading by this point, maybe you'd like to give this a shot? You have until Monday October 12th to post your character concept, so no rush. But, if you'd like to post briefly and introduce yourself (and ask questions if you've got them), that would be most welcome.

Thanks for your time,
Alan
