Why is competence so hard?

Because mediocrity and inertia are usually enough to keep most people from being removed and require much less time, effort, and investment?

Basically, most of Europe has their s*$! much better together than us.

Which is exactly why the Powers That Be here have spent the last 30-40 years demonizing Europe and the EU and UN.

Heck it was one of the big reasons we didn't switch to the Metric system when we had the chance. Among other things, obviously, but a campaign of "we don't need to be like those pansy Europeans!" was definitely a contributor.

Would you be at all surprised if they said "they're not?"?

Sadly that's probably exactly 100% how most people I know offline would react to learning that. And completely without irony or sarcasm.

Wahoo! We have a house!

Just to rent for the time being; we can't proceed with buying until Whingey Wizzard is working, but at least our rental application has been approved, and we're going to overnight them our deposit first thing tomorrow. (Why they won't accept wire transfer is beyond me.)

My new commute will be LESS THAN TEN MINUTES, entirely on residential streets. It's three miles from the new school.

Oh, and I discovered there's a Jamaican restaurant less than five miles away that makes curry goat and festival (corn fritters).

And it's 12.5 miles away from the Polish deli where they sell the good sausage and make paczki on weekends.

Things are looking up!

Any commute under 6 miles is better by bicycle.

Especially in hot weather.

This man speaks lies.

(Bias confession: I move my car around each day at lunch so that it's parked in a shady location all day, crack the windows if it's not scheduled to rain, and am not averse to letting the car sit and cool for a few minutes before departing, no matter how short the trip. Also my disdain for bicycles on car-dominated streets is well known.)

Long winded car driver babble.

Go the speed limit or get off my road. ^_^

Yeah, damn those other humans.

I've grown even more cynical in my time away, if that were possible. I didn't think it was, but you know, just when you think you can't, a depth of cynicism I'd not discovered is just below the surface, if you keep burrowing with hatred enough.

Yes. Yes. Let the hate flow through you.

Otherwise I'm going to end up eventually spending another night tossing and turning because I'm too pissed off at the more vocal subset of humanity that's irked me this week to sleep.

Let the anger flow through you. Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken.
