As for the fluff, the gist of it would be an orphan of unknown parentage taken in by the Asmodean clergy (his last name is a play on "Sworn to Asmodeus"). Still, despite growing up within the church and its teachings and tenets, he never took to it all that much. Thus when he became of age he left it, deciding the life of a priest was not for him. After that he traveled to see more of the world outside not only the temple he grew up in but Cheliax as a whole before finally returning to his homeland. He found that he had missed its inherent discipline, a discipline that had served to hone his prowess and skills as he was growing up, skills that had always been more physical than spiritual, especially considering the fact that he has different from most of his kind. Stronger, tougher, faster, these were all traits he owed, albeit unknowingly, to some hint of draconic blood within his ancestry, a connection that, no matter how distant, would on rare occasions imbue some precious few members of his lineage with physical attributes greater than most other humans.
Although not exactly driven by patriotism, he nevertheless considers himself a son of Cheliax, especially taking into account his upbringing and his never knowing his real parents. And even if that were not the case, the challenges awaiting him in his country's service, challenges that can only lead to his improving himself and his skills and abilities, would still be incentive enough. That and he probably quite enjoys a good fight.
