"... I think the adults refer to it as 'civilization'..." "I think I've heard mum call going to the bedroom and do you know what 'f*$*ing boring' once." Clara comments. "But wait, they are making babies at that party? Does that mean I get a little sister?"
Clara shrugs and follows Tarjun. "Everything's better than staying here and waiting for things to happen."
"It's dangerous behaviour. If they start that at home they disappear in their bedroom, lock the door, and then make funny noises." Clara comments. "But here are no doors to lock."
Clara considers the offer as she is halfway there already but another question quickly arises in her mind and pours out of her gaping mouth "What are we supposed to do here?" Until now there was a gap in Clara's imagination between goats making babies - which she has witnessed - and humans making babies. But those Satyrs wooing nymphs leave little to the imagination and the closing of that gap makes her shudder. "Can I please have my pants back?"
"I thinks it's fun having a baby. And as Tarjun doesn't want to be my husband, maybe I'll find one there."
Clara stops her bouncing around. "Pregnant with a faun? Do baby fauns have horns too?"
"I'm not gonna be oppressed by your cultural norms anymore! Free the butts from the tyranny of pants!" You're not sure if she is actually under the influence of magic. But it definitely doesn't brush her the wrong way. She keeps running in circles to stay ahead of Jewel.
"Jewel! Try it out!"
"We need to simplify that. Only one string, and to change the tone you have to shorten the string with your finger on the board it is mounted."
Clara reluctantly takes the ring and the fur and as Tarjun is not willing or able to sew, she tries it herself.
When that finally is done with quite some pricking fingers clara cuts a small triangle out of the rim every inch. Getting the twig ring out isn't easy, but once it is done the twine goes in to tie the fur to the bucket and put some tension on it. The pattern of the twine looks chaotic at the sides and the wild crossing at the bottom looks concerning in regards to the durability of this 'instrument'. But for now it holds and slapping the thing with the hand makes a sound. Not like a big war drum or to bully galley slaves, more the sound to drive a household crazy with persistance.
Clara sighs. She hasn't even started to fetch the tools. "Don't rush me." she objects and then moves towards the stairs and up as if she had heavy weights tied to her legs.
"Sure. Let's go get some tree parts." Clara replies less than enthusiastic.
Clara shudders. "That has Women of Stepford vibes." "And her going after that cabbage leaves us with the sewing of the rabbit skin."
"Jewel is going to make us eat vegetables. She has joined the dark side!"
"You're aware, that you don't put the whole cabbage into the barrel, right? You'd have to cut enough cabbages into fine slices to fill a barrel." Clara isn't that easily tricked out of playtime and into work. Even if Jewel sides with her mum to do the trick.
Clara has disgust written all over her face. She thought cabbage is the worst and there is no way to make it worse, but now she isn't sure about that anymore.
"But it will still be cabbage!" Clara objects with disbelief and disgust.
"Sure. We have to go there anyway." Clara replies.
"Looks nice." Clara replies. "How do we get the skin to stick to it?"
"Soooo, are we going back to tell Tarjun, or are we doing something else and let him find out himself once he is done with the wood part of the drum?"
"I like it big and loud! Like thunder! But I didn't tell Tarjun."
"Um... Tarjun is making it right now, but he didn't tell, did he?" Clara replies turning to Jewel for help.
"Yes, and now we need some skin to put on that drum. Do you have some left that we can use?"
"I'm sure mum has some skin hanging around. We just need to talk her out of it."
"That will take forever!" Clara protests but trots along for a lack of better ideas.
"What are you calling me? And no I'm not going to work - I'm postponign that as long as possible!"
"Why? I can play the drum with my hands!"
"Doesn't matter, my mom can do that. And the rest of it is wood, right?"
"I want a drum!"
"What shall we do with a drunken sailor,
That doesn't hinder her any.
Clara gasps as the is hit by the cold water. It takes a second to regain her composure while standing in a puddle. Then she starts laughing and shaking herself to get the worst of it off. She gives Tarjun a thumbs up. "We're broken. We have no ideas what to do for fun. We might as well start working and be adults."
"I don't want to do it anymore. We talked it to death."
"Bucket of water on a slightly open door?" Clara suggests. "The tea party sounds fun, but woudn't most of tehm run away when someone walks in on that?" "If we could turn Jewel into a bear and she then stands in the kitchen cooking, that would be a surprise!"
"Put shit in front of the door, cover it in leaf or hey and set it on fire. Then knock on the door and run away."
Clara raises her finger half heartedly, but then changes her mind. If mom isn't in the mood of showing us how to make bows after the prank, that's more work avoided.
"She has caught a bad case of adult. She is at work and earning money with her thoughts again. I suggest we hit her over the head and lock her away til she recovers."
"My mom would never shoot me with a bow. What kind of mom do you have?" Clara inquires aghast. "If the prank would be funny, she'd laugh with me. If it hurt her, she'd probably give me noogie or something. Or if I get her really good she might prank me back." "If the prank is stupid and hurts, then I might be in for real trouble." Clara ponders some more. "You know what? Each of us throws acorns at their own parents for a prank and we see who has the coolest parents."
"If we take that into consideration we should throw acorns. They are much easier to find than hazelnuts."
"Well, we could throw nuts at your mum too if we could find her."
"I guess we have to throw the nuts at Jack ourself then." Clara sighs.
"What he said." Clara approves. "I never understood why a god would be extra hard on those who try to follow their rules while at the same time leaving those who flip them the bird alone. Makes no sense to me." "Shouldn't they cheer you on where you're doing good instead?"
"Nah. Everyone points at swallowtails if they see one, but other than that it seldom comes up. Our most regular religious practice is sleeping. That counts as prayer." Clara replies.
"So Tarjun, what are we going to do now, while Jewel does adulting?"
"Don’t say things. What you are stands over you the while, and thunders so that I cannot hear what you say to the contrary." Clara quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson to Jewel. One could wonder where she got that though, as no one would believe she read a book where that is written herself.
"That's not what I meant." Clara throws her hand in the air. "Mom says I shouldn't eat too much cake it's not good for me. But who cares I eat it anyway! And you too." "Put those poor squirrels won't get any, because it's not good for them. There you are a hypocrite." Watching Jewel leave Clara adds "That's why everyone else thinks Erastil is lame. No fun to be had there."
"Hypocrite." Clara accuses Jewel.
