Background:
Chantal was born in Clear Springs, a village in northwestern Aundair. Most people in Clear Springs venerate nature, and Chantal's family was no exception. They were farmers on the edge of the woods, a large family who just about managed to make ends meet. Chantal showed an unusual interest in and ability with plants at an early age, which caught the town druid's attention. She offered to take Chantal as an apprentice and her parents eagerly accepted. Not only was druid a prestigious occupation, that was one less mouth for them to feed.

For a few years all was well. The Last War raged on Aundair's borders, but the only impact on the folk of Clear Springs was increased taxes and food levies for the troops. Chantal's master, Margana Thiel, taught her nature magic, the secret tongue of the druids, and how to make ordinary herbs into magic potions. They both served as healers for Clear Springs and the surrounding farms.

Then the military arrived. They had heard of Margana and Chantal's healing abilities and came with a conscription order. The battlefield hospitals on the Thrane border needed healers, and the officer in charge was not taking no for an answer. The druids protested, but to no avail. They were taken south to help the beleaguered doctors of House Jorasco and herb-healers from other small country towns patch up the soldiers of Aundair. Chantal saw the horrors of war firsthand, and it left its mark.

When the peace treaty was signed, the two druids headed home. But Chantal found that she didn't quite fit anymore. She was restless, questioning herself and her faith. So she saved up her coin and set off for Greenheart in the Eldeen Reaches, hoping that the legendary tree-druid Oalian would have words of wisdom for her. Chantal spent two years there, healing the emotional wounds of the War and learning from the elder druids. Eventually she felt the urge to move on. Something pulled her back to Aundair, but this time to the southwest. A small village called Windshire. She isn't sure why she's there, but feels confident that she'll find out eventually. In the meantime, Chantal is happy to heal the wounds and ailments of the frontier town.

DM's Eyes Only!:
The above is mostly true, except that Chantal is actually from the village of Alvirad in the northern Eldeen Reaches. Rather than being conscripted, Margana and Chantal answered the Wardens of the Wood's plea for aid on the Breland border. Aundair had pulled its forces out of the area, leaving the people who lived there vulnerable to Breland's attempts to take over the Reaches. The pair served as healers for the druids, rangers, fey, and armed commoners who fought the Brelanders off.

Chantal did go to Greenheart to rest and learn after the War. However, rather than being a visiting Aundairian, she is a loyal Reacher and Warden. Oalian's deputy, Faena Graymorn, offered the young druid a mission. The Wardens have heard concerning rumors about Lord Darro ir'Lain's desire to invade the Eldeen Reaches and retake the rich farmlands in the eastern region for Aundair. One of his vassals, Count Tarnik ir'Weld of Windshire, has been especially vocal in his support. Thus, the Wardens want a spy in Windshire to let them know what the Count is up to. Faena thought Chantal would be well suited since she's unusually gregarious for a druid as well as being a healer. People are more inclined to trust someone who heals their wounds and cures their illnesses. Chantal accepted without hesitation. She'll do whatever it takes to prevent another war. For now the plan is to meet her contact in the woods outside Windshire to pass on information once a week or so. When she learns how to cast 2nd level spells, she'll use animal messenger spells to take notes to her contact across the river in Redleaf.

Appearance:
Chantal is a tall, slim half-elven woman with green eyes and long strawberry blonde hair. She usually wears her hair in a ponytail or bun with a sprig of holly and mistletoe tied into it. Like most druids, Chantal prefers sturdy, practical clothes dyed in earth tones. When venturing outside the village she wears hide armor and carries a scythe, with a club, dagger, and sling on her belt.

Personality:
Chantal is very much an optimist, cheerful and friendly to almost everyone she meets. She firmly believes that people can live in harmony with nature if they have an expert- like herself- to show them the way. As a healer, she considers it her duty to help the sick and injured of her community, even if they can't pay. Chantal worked in a battlefield hospital during the Last War and what she saw there has left its mark to this day. She dislikes fighting, but will defend herself and her community when necessary. The War taught her that sometimes avoiding combat isn't an option.
