Background:
Captain Piers Makepiece is a good man in a bad place. A captain chartered to the Imperial Mercantile League, he sails a ship that is not his for people he does not like. To top it off, his rank is now in question pending disciplinary action after he refused to sail a cargo of Tulita slaves back to the mainland. Until the matter is resolved, he is stuck at port.

So he rations what remains of his savings and spends the days drinking at cheap taverns and picking fights with young troublemakers or fighting duels for foppish plantation owners. It was not always like this, his father and grandfather before him were famous free captains, heroes of the high seas controlling and protecting lucrative trade routes against all comers. His grandfather gave his life leading his ship against the Karken of Port Tilmouth, and his father simply vanished with his ship, the Harbinger. The two flagships of the Makepiece fleet were lost and the rest faded over time.

Piers' mother, always a frail woman, faded with the fleet but fought to keep what she could together in memory of her husband. Despite her best efforts, when her illnesses finally claimed her, there was little left for Piers to claim. With no where else to turn, he attended the Academy and signed on as a midshipman and rose rapidly to a position a captain. The merchant fleet he was signed on with was soon taken over by the Imperial Mercantile League, much to the consternation of many of the captains, and broken up. His ship the Zephyr was sold to a trader out of Port Shaw and thus he fell under the control of Eliza Mudborne much to his personal consternation.

Appearance and Personality:
Piers is a handsome man, and cuts a dashing figure in his uniform. Tall and lean, with strong features that harken back to his grandfather. Only one of his eyes is regularly visible, the left is obscured by a black cloth eyepatch. Judging by the impressive scar running from his hairline to chin, it is likely blind at best, gone at worst. His right leg is also in a similar sad state, missing from the knee down and replaced with a crude wooden prosthetic. Incredibly, he has not missed a step and despite his handicaps, is an impressive swordsman.

He keeps his Sphinx of Boros tattoo wrapped in bandages unless it is strictly required, an indicator to those that know him of just what he thinks of his charter. Piers longs for the day when he can pay it off and seek his fortunes elsewhere. Sadly, Ms. Mudborne seems to have no intentions of letting such a skills captain escape her influence.

Piers is a good man to his crew, always treating them fairly and taking an hands-on approach to them. More often than not, he can be found up in the rigging or stowing equipment. He has a sharp wit and a cunning way with people. He never seems to be home at port though and often spends hours watching the horizon for something he cannot or will not share.
