You are correct Cap'n in that a EL of party level should warrant about a 20% loss of hp, resources et al. Given how there are 8 PCs - well, the effective party level is at least 20, if not higher when you factor in the various 'extra action' effects available to them.

Even with the bump, only three characters (Ineptus, Monkamuck and Joselin) really took any serious damage from the encounter at Shami-Amourae's well. The impression the players over all gave me was to the effect of "we'll just bop back to the Sea Wyvern and heal up the vile damage real quick". As far as I can tell, the group is still quite ready to rock n roll.

I do not disagree. This was under par for our CR, more or less. The problem with the 20% rule is that if the GM usually uses focused fire on a group of 6 or more that means a dead character. It's a hard balancing act.

I think that the BIGGEST factor is the unique magic we have, specifically revivify. I have not read about other groups and doubt the author of the script expected us to walk around with 4-5 revivify spells, for those of you that don't know, revivify is a resurrection spell that must be cast within one round of death. It restores a character to life with no loss of level or con, and for what it does, the material component of 1k of diamonds is nothing. I have had it used on me i think twice, and the group over all has probably saved each other at least 10 times with this spell. We have prevented anybody from taking a level loss since 4th level by my recollection. For instance, when we fought Olangru again, the fight was a hard fight, but we lost nothing really, three people I believe died but nobody lost a level because of revivify and it's powerful effects. It is also a combat speed spell, taking only 1 round to cast, a simple heal and that player is back up and swinging or spelling off like there was nothing wrong. True resurrection is a 9th level spell, has 25k worth of material components, until epic levels start to become in reach.

I think Freedom of Movement needs clarification - as it stands, once you have a 7th or 8th level party, grappling ceases to be a routine concern, while ever-increasing numbers of high CR critters rely on grappling to actually DO anything as foes.

The critter's SR for its CR is low - it's DR probably should have been 5/- (unless an Epic weapon was inserted in Age of Worms at an earlier point) or perhaps 10/-. The SR normally is gauged at CR+10, typically capping at 25-30 until you hit really "high end" critters.

Again I agree with Turin, many monsters at higher CR's make use of grapple attacks. The idea that a 4th level spell totally negates any of that is a problem. More clarification is needed.

I think that making it a bonus to resist on any check that FoM normally makes you immune to, a bonus along the lines of +10/5 levels, so +10 at level 7 and only a +40 at level 20 (although high, there are a lot of near epic monsters with +70 or high grapple bonuses). Maybe not that level of a bonus, but something equally nasty like this. That gives a mage the ability to not always need a nat 20 to make a grapple check or powerful fort save vs. parylsis. This would also give the High BAB and ST characters an excellent chance to not be grappled by a dragon or equally nasty grappling monster, but still have to worry about it.

Finally, we have found Vanthus, we have wiped out the remaining problems we can find around this jail, soon to be his corpse’s tomb. We noticed long ago a small tower in the center of the volcano, figuring it to be of importance, we saved it for last. Through one last set of poisoned double doors and there he was. His choice for a fight, calling out Sir Ineptus to fight one on one first, then the Captain, then myself. I obviously found this fine; a challenge is always acceptable, even for Vanthus, as long as he can hold his end of the bargain. As the one on one starts, he has his one pet, a magnificent dragon type of creature that was composed of pure magma, this monstrous beast that we could feel the heat from the hundreds of feet away from us it was. As I saw this monster approaching, I had more concerns with this beast than Vanthus, being over an active volcano. None the less, Sir Ineptus disproved his name, charging in a save as possible manner, keeping his defenses about himself, began to assault Vanthus, with much difficulty, we have trained to evade attacks well, with all the powerful fiend we fight, but he had even more defense that all but myself had, and only I can outdo him on my complete defense. None the less, the fight too a turn for the worst after Vanthus first assault, destroying Ineptus’s defenses, but not quite defeating him. The journalist, in a poor sportsmanly way, decided to interfere with his shot at glory; she later said that she tried to dispel his effects, since I didn’t know what she did, but that ended the dual right there. Out of the ground came all of his backup, up came the drake, and so began the bloodbath. Six or so undead creatures came out surrounding the group, as did a group of six or so demons. They assaulted the party in general, but with a massive death ward on the party from the unfroze Kahlua, the newest cleric to our group, they were unable to do too much other than a bit of frost. With appetizer and buttercup retreating back, Kahlua came forward and unleashed a useless but extremely high intensity holy word. These undead were far too powerful for even the most intense level I have ever witnessed (CL 23). Seeing that we were horribly outnumbered, I yelled to appetizer to call forth my Kordian friend with a scroll. I had made contact with a Titan, a fellow follower of Kord to aid us at a future date. We NEEDED the assistance and forth he came. While I thought he could help assault the monsters, he actually just drew fire from all of the undead and the drake until we could deal with them. Torsin, recently acquiring a sun blade, used it to counter the darkness within the area, and reduced the undead’s abilities to function. This fight was brutal, Ineptus died trying to destroy Vanthus and the Captain did as well, Vanthus, with a magical aura and look of complete sadism, in one series destroyed him. The group was split up and our attack was barely holding. Our saving grace came from an outside participant one of the new players , now following us on our journey. While the titan was wrestling with the drake, the little guy managed to slip a death scarab onto the creature, unable to avoid it in the mix-up of the wrestling; it crawled under its skin, and ripped up its heart. With this opponent out of the way, the fight was very winnable not minding the idea of going down in a blaze of glory, I was glad that this was not my final battle. We finished dealing with the remaining of his quite formidable minions and focused up on Vanthus. When he was almost dead, he retreated to a small room to try to power up again for another assault. The little guy got the killing blow on the Vanthus to many of our dismays. I wish it had been me that had that blow, but at least he is dead. Out titan friend did not survive the assault; holding the drake above the bridge until we could recover its treasure, but he was so weak after this fight, that a single attack finished him off, and he plundered into the volcano below. Barely winning this fight, I decided that I would have to revive the Titan when I had the available time, probably making the time, for he was a major turning point in this fight, while he did not defeat a single enemy, he preoccupied the attention of the dragon and half of the minions while we cleaned up shop. Now that we have barely survived, we healed up, gathered up our treasures, and went back to the ship to rest. On the way, we returned proof of Vanthus's defeat by returning his head. One of the new players, Kahlua, is a master chef and managed to pickle his head inside a jar of holy water.
The journalist must be dealt with, she disrupted a perfectly honorable fight, we respect her god’s wishes and she goes and dishonors an epic challenge for the Kordians. But that will have to come later, we need to work together to defeat our enemies in the mean time.

I've yet to come up with a board-alias for Da Fighter's gf, who is completely new to gaming, D&D and high-level play all in one go. She's been around the past 2 sessions rolling Da Fighter's dice for him.

Da Fighter has assured me her character will be as simple and easy to run as possible for her, with him also sitting adjacent to her at the table to make sure she understands things.

I have now dubbed Da Fighter's gf as Da Squeeze, at least until she earns a different nickname...

Da squeeze will be for the time being a Cleric to her philosophical beliefs unless she plays her personality in a way to follow an available god. While her character is a cleric and therefore a spellcaster and not the simplest, her spell list will consist of the cure spells and other basic healing spells, and 4-5 other spells. So while she could be played much more complicatedly, she will only know the basics of her character and grow into her full abilities. She will have a longbow with nothing fancy on it, but a good bonus. Not to mention a standing AC of 33 from a monk's belt, dex bonus, bracers of armor and a shirt of natural armor.

But why, you did it so well. Why not try it again...:)

It's player prespective, he feels aweful; I on the otherhand thoroughly enjoyed it and wish it could have lasted longer. STUPID DISPEL MAGIC SPELL.

Mortality undone, what a fun spell. For those that do not know of the spell, it temporarly changes your alignment to evil from whatever it was. You won't immediately attack your allies, but when i'm already chaotic and evil, something is bound to happen. I was all like a bad dream. The succubus grabbed lavinia from her torture chamber and left. We quickly healed her up and got ready for a fight. I found myself impatient with diplomacy and decided to enjoy the find food and luxury around us. Enjoying the chocolates and exotic wines. I knew that Lavinia was very valuable to Vanthas and us too, but how valuable. A very angry creature demanded her back, so I asked her for "how much?". I guess it didn' take me seriously because it didn't answer. I did get an answer back from the journalist who threatened to kill me. Now, normally I take her jokes lightly and sarcastically, but under this spell, her works infuriated me. I quickly move up to her and unloaded a full attack with my sword 170 damage, if my 4th hit had connected, she would have dropped to a large negatives of hit points. Several of my group understood that my initial question of "how much" was serious but nobody acted till I took my own actions. When they saw me moving in for the kill on the journalist, they tried to hesitate and halt me, but my superior will from Kord in this corrupted form pushed off their wills. After a massive barage to her, she managed to dispel the effect. It was like waking up from an evil masterminds nightmare to find yourself the insturment of your own friends destruction. I hope that I never find myself in those shoes again.

Sorry for the late report but I've busy with school stuff.

As we continued our onslaught on the abyssal tower, we found a lack of difficult defenders, but they sure were in large numbers to make up for there individual prowness. I was ready to continue assaulting more weaklings but our spellcasting types required their rest and dedication to their god for some more spells or something, sounded like an excuse but when half the group isn't ready, there's no point in hogging all of the glory. After a lovely nap inside my personal oasis, completely retreating from this abyssal place, we advance onto find a swarm of vrock creatures and a mobile demon statue of infernal devotion. They didn't seem to notice us but we sure noticed them. I did not notice how much slower I was without the benefit of a haste spell I have become accustom to. I charged, but my allies were so much faster than me that I decided to wait for a spell to get me in the fight faster. My companion cast a fly spell and I immediately interrupted the four vrocks that began dancing in preparation for devastating burst of unholy energy. I instantly slaying one that had been weakened by two firestorms from the journalist's divine spells. Those two firestorms made it impossible for the vrocks to keep up their flight. I picked my targets and dealt with them while the captain claimed his targets as did sir Ineptus and buttercup acquire their own targets of destruction. But enough about them, they can take care of themselves. The three remaining vrocks that were dancing realized that they could not survive to get their devastating dance to activate and tried to move to attack me, forgetting their defenses, I was able to get a cheap shot off on each of them. Between those hits and the already substantial firestorm damage, they fell before they could get off an attack. My next target was the might two headed demonic statue. I had a feeling that at some point we would encounter golem creatures and had purchased a scarab magic item to make my attacks devastating against such creatures. I took a step and with my gauntlets made my sword reach longer than a long spear and almost destroyed the monster. It got off a single set of attacks that managed to harm me but did not harm me more than once or twice, and those were only scratches.
We crossed over a river through the upper level of the tower to find an area projected by a most unusual trap. The only one unable to resist the demonic urges of this pillar of nails and hooks was sir Ineptus. He walked up to the pillar and gave his face to the horrific display of other faces. We managed to heal him but not his face, we would give him a reason to resist that urge again and gave him time to thing without his face on. After passing that column of face ripping, we came to a saddening sight. Two angles were freely walking this place. There was something off about these creatures, they had lost favor with their celestial allies and have been forced to live a life around their old enemies. The Captain began his form of diplomacy. Telling the trumpet archon to shove its horn up it’s a$$, he followed through to find another fallen angel. For some reason, Sir Ineptus tried to reason with them, but his method of reasoning involves a monster sword normally ends up in someone being dying. After angering them, the major fallen angel took its bow out and accidentally shot his other companion. The remaining angel did not survive much longer. We could not allow it to continue to suffer, right or wrong for what it might have done to be thrown out of celestial, so we ended its sorrowful life. We have rested for the night, preparing to deal with more abyssal monsters.

Atonement could work for Yvy, but in the case of those who willfully commit evil acts, the caster of the atonement spell must pay 500xp for the spell to work. Thus, Breca will need to dump 500xp to help Yvy atone for her actions. Yvy's pestige class allows her to summon and call fiends without threatening her alignment. However, making sacrifices and other such nastiness to bind a fiend will have an impact on the fate of her soul.

carborundum wrote:
Does an atonement spell work if you made a conscious choice? Seems a bit of a get-out-of-jail-free card to me. Never used it, I'll have to go read it :)

Atonement is a slap on the wrist to the character/player that if you don't watch out, your alignment will permanently change to reflect your actions. Everybody, even good guys can have a slip due to person feelings, annoyance, whatever, in and out of character. This spell is available in my opinion to give that character a second chance and force them to pay for their mistake. If you are a paladin for example, and you kill an innocence for whatever reason, once. Atonement would represent you realizing what you did was wrong and that you want a second chance. If you kill an innocences, atone, kill another innocense and atone again, etc etc etc; atonement would be irrelivant, your alignment is not good in this case if you continually kill innocents

Playing an alignment means that you are actually playing that character as such an attitude, if that changes or you choose to only have that lawful good be something written down on your character sheet, it is not accurate and you should change it or the GM should for you.

Also, as for the XP cost, a common house rule in our games is that spells of any sorts that have XP costs can be paid by other players instead of the caster if they directly involve both parties. So instead of the poor cleric burning 500xp, the character needed atonement would have to burn 500xp for their mistake.

Our most recent raid was on a safe house that we hoped to find some prisoners to interrogate for information regarding the Crimson Fleet's secret cove. The building was a small three story building between the remains of an alchemical lab and a heavy duty warehouse. Be subtle like we always are, we barged right in expecting a fight from the get go. The ground floor was dust covered and abandoned in apperance; I have heard of magical means to create this effect and considering the resources of our enemy, wouldn’t be surprised if this was the case, since this was apparently a popular safehouse. We quickly checked the few doors on the ground floor, Sir Ineptus found the back door only to find a dog pissing on the door before he opened it, and needless to say he had a bath later. I headed over to another door that I thought might lead to a basement, but didn’t have a chance to check before the journalist decided to take point and headed upstairs. She found the first wave of enemies, they were pathetic and died quickly; two of them ran upstairs and jumped out of the third story window only to get hacked by Torsin waiting outside, hovering with her long sword in hand. They escaped, for now. Now, you would thought that after one scare of taking point that the Journalist would have learned; I guess she didn’t write down that going first is a bad idea. She headed up to the third floor only to walk into an ambush. She came running downstairs as fast as she went up crackling everywhere with a powerful negative energy destroying her life force 12 negative levels on 5d4, much higher and it would have taken her life. That was the end of her usefulness for this fight. Realizing the potential trap awaiting above, and after several shouts from me to go through the ceiling to take out our enemies, the Captain did just that. With a spell of divine power, he grew to such a size that he burst through the ceiling and pulled one of the individuals from above down to his death. Not missing a beat, I took advantage of this opening can using the speed from my belt, crawled up to the second floor and destroyed two of them, the last thing the saw was a Knoll grow to monstrous size and a dwarf come crawling up his back and cut their head off. We killed all but one of these creatures, knocking the last one into unconsciousness and beyond. After some medical care, he woke up and decided it was best to tell us where their secret cove was. After getting all the usefulness we could out of him and since we could not let him go, we knocked him out and put him out of his miserable ways humanly as possible. It isn’t pleasant killing an unarmed creature like that, but awake and about, it would have been a great threat to let it live.

Having all of your life nearly drained out of you by 5 rays of black energy takes a lot out of you, so we rested till morning. In the mean time, we headed to the secret pirate cove and prepared to assault it in our normal fashion, fast and furiously devastating. On the now quite enormous buttercup, we made our way into the inlet where they hid; there was an illusion that after focusing we all saw past concealing this fortress. For the most part, it looked like a run down messy and diseased dock, but to one side was a tree, so old it absorbed several ships into its mass. It was in an impossible balance in the sky, like the tree house of the kraken or some other ship wrecking fiendish creature. On our approach, the journalist took a pot shot at one of the guard towers. A might comet fall collapsed the roof, taking the barely alive guards and threw them down 30 feet to their death from that nasty fall and debris. As we landed, we quickly worked out way to the nearest shack, behind door #1, we found several subordinate pirates, and the appetizer blasted them into a state of forgetfulness, at least as to who is friend and foe. As they attacked each other, we watched as each backstabbed the other. The journalist used one of her new granted spells to blast every single enemy within sight. Massive columns of fire fell from the sky, creating a massive “Y” of flames that ignited half of the piers, all of the occupied building and nearly destroying all of our enemies. Immediately after this, a monster that I have only heard bad things about appeared; an eye of the deep. It seemed to form out of the water, but only for a second, Sir Ineptus, failing to realize its nature released a full assault on this far too real illusionary beast, temporarily removing it from our way. After the lighting of the entire facility, nasty beast known as a death slaad and two green slaads; I expected more of a fight, remember my encounter with a blue slaad so long ago. They were quickly destroyed by buttercup, the Captain and I. Now, the only threat was that Eye of the Deep returning. As I attacked it, I realized its true nature, only being a projection, one that can attack mind you; I looked for the location of the true beast. I noticed a too convenient hole under one of the unexplored builds. I alerted the rest of our group to my findings which resulted in two spells and a huge griffon to start digging out this creature. We found this horrible beast and it sent out a flash of light that blinded several people. This is apparently this creature’s most powerful ability; that flash that it can rapidly use to completely blind and stun any in its path. This will take some serious tactics to defeat it, but I have faith that we can figure something out.

Awe, that's not fair. There was a waiting list to frag that monkey. He can't just skip the line and take him out like that. Oh well, it's not like he is the only fiend out there that I am waiting in line to destroy.

May appologies for not writing a journal for a while. I have just not been in a writing mood.
Recent events have been, interesting to say the least. There has been much success, but at a heavy price. Our most recent adventure had taken us to a temple deep within the Island of Dread. Our new flying companions allowed for a relatively quick trip to this temple. Within it, Bow of incredible power which will help us defeat the Fiendish infestation of our world. After dealing with a scouting party on the other rim of this temple, we were ambushed by a group of illusion disguised monsters. The only real threat was some huge creature, the rest died quickly and without problems.
After recovering, we made our way to the base of the temple. Atop it was an enormous stone blocking our way. We had our pack of celestial griffons move it for us. Once inside, there were two events of interests, a group of Kupra, and the main chamber massacre. The first one work attention was three Kupra with spears. They had some innate ability that left all of us dazed from some unholy power, something the spell casters called a Blasphemy spell; or something with the same effects but not a normal spell being cast. Other than then rather annoying and violating experience, the only other problem with that conflict was from Sir Ineptus. Foolishly, he charged one of the beasts, hoping for a killing blow. He did quite a bit to his foe, but his reckless charge Dropping his AC to a pathetic 14 from shock trooper feat left him open to a might counter attack. With only two hits, the second bursting clean through his heart, instantly killing him. We immediately moved in, one of our spell casters had a very helpful spell. Interesting spell, it allowed for the Captain and his body to switch places. We quickly revived him before he slipped too far away from his body, requiring costly magic to correct. Between the rest of us, we easily finished off two of them. Unfortunately, one managed to escape and raise the alarm. This first encounter was not so much hard as annoying and lucky on their part.

The second fight was the most challenging and lucky encounter of our lives so far. Such a great force we have never seen; one of the 5 beasts alone would have been more of a force that all of the Crimson fleets initial attack and our own power combined. There were several very powerful fiendish or otherwise vile creatures. Ohlangru, the demon monkey, much more powerful than before, he did not surface till later in this fight. There was a demon named Ulioth, a cleric, worshipper of the vile Demagorgon himself. The vrock that survived the Fareshore massacre was back as well; much more powerful and menacing than before, even without partners to complete its deadly dance of Ruin, it was a mighty nasty opponent.Another was some horrific creature that I do not know about. What I do know about it is that it was bathing like a fish in a massive pool of incredibly vile fiendish liquid. Even more disturbing about this liquid is how flammable it is when exposed to air. The top of its surface was partially lit, creating an unholy glow in the room. This final creature used its acidic and flammable properties all too well.

This unknown creature being in front received the first attacks. With the captain granting us the buffing of Kord, we moved into the room. Sir Ineptus, the captain and I targeted the unknown vile creature. Before we could destroy it, it spewed that acidic stuff on buttercup and many spell casters, holding the rear. In addition to its breath attack, it clawed into buttercup, killing her for a while. We slowly moved into the room and continued to work on this great evil force. This battle, though ended in success, was a great cost and a bit of luck. At first, Olahgru was not in this room to our knowledge. We determined that he was invisible hiding somewhere, after we moved in, he surprised me and with an invisible attack, took me out. Previous to my temporary death, Sir Ineptus was cut to pieces by an attack of incredible speed. After research earlier today, I discovered that Ulioth, the clerics of the Demagorgon receive one of his abilities, to act at double speed for a certain amount of time per day. One of his series of attack took Sir Ineptus from full to dead, again. We were both raised by our magical items and I was healed up quickly. The fight was going heavily against us until the captain got a luck punch on Ohlangru as he neglected to protect himself as he moved away and a might punch killed his form on this plane of existence, for now. The fight ended with Ulioth and the vrock being killed; we thought we had dropped Khalla but he recovered enough to flee and have another monster come in his place. I made sure Ulioth stayed dead with a powerful combo of attacks against his remains. With that being the only enemy left, we quickly reorganized. I head the line against it and replaced my spent life stone if this fight went ill. After receiving a series of attacks, it retreated back and tried to wall us off. It quickly realized it was no match for us all and retreated as well.

We quickly picked ourselves up, some of the treasure and retreated to make camp, away from this place for the night. We figured since we had the ability to completely heal up and they might not, returning the next day to finish them off and deal with I had a suspicion was a massive Savage Tide starting sphere. Once well rested, we move back to the temple surface and attempted to determine the status of the temple after our assault. Jade used her magic to look into the room to find it was dark. Not being able to see anything, she tried another spot in the room only to hear that we had been detected and shut down. We spelled up immediately and our plan was to teleport in for an ambush. I don’t know how this magic works, but it didn’t work this time, we were separated into two groups. Jade, the journalist and I only made it half way there, and the rest of the party was on target. Much to my enjoyment, we were right in the middle of a team of skinwalkers, their boss and two competent lackeys. I was not worried about this fight, I could take the skinwalkers all day, and with the Journalist realizing some new abilities, the fight was quick for the skin walkers. It rained holy power that severely hurt almost all of our foes in the corridor. I quickly hacked through them quicker than her spell could and then focused my attention on the lackeys. Their spells and abilities did kill Jade, but she was quickly recovered and retreated back while I stayed up and took them on. With the journalist providing some bonus damage and more importantly healing, finally took them out.

The other’s had their fun as well, the Captain went buffing and growing with Sir Ineptus. Torsin was disabled by several symbols of unholy powers and was unable to provide much help. This time, we managed to defeat all of the enemies; Khalla did not retreat this time and was slain. This creature did not go down quietly. His god, angered by his failure, or maybe our success; Khalla’s body died, but his vile spirit blew up and out of this dimension only for us to notice desire for wrath that is on par with the gods. We might have won the battle, but the war was still to come. We ransacked this place, taking the extravagant treasures it contained and returned home. For now, it is not my home, my wife, the Captain’s wife and Lavinia had all been stolen by Vanthas and his new group of followers. We quickly divided the wealth, put most the rest of our treasure into Jade’s merchant fencing system for a better return. I have purchased my supplies for our next voyage, hopefully everybody else will be ready tomorrow. I will wait three days for them, if they are not ready I will go alone and find her myself. I swear on my own soul, should I fail may it be permanently give to a Balor should I fail, that I will find her again and annihilate the ones responsible with my own hands. There is a long line for Vanthan’s head, but if I get my chance, I will not share my revenge against that vile creature, I must contain this rage for it is not of good moral, even against such an evil creature. Lucky for Vanthan, we don’t have more time. There is apparently a spell that can summon a Solar to fight for your cause; instead of dying at a swarm of their always good hands, he will have to suffer our brutal wrath.

Now what though? Sounds like you folks have some bodies to rescue, which should get very interesting, very quickly.

Oh, we have more than some folks to rescue; we have some people to rescue, a port to tear appart in doing so and punishing those responsible for this violation. If we only had more time, I would have some more horrific things happening in our favor but time is not on our time in this encounter. I wish I could personally destroy thos responsible but I have to share that honor with my party who was also hurt; such is life.

We have finished for tonight. I will leave it to Turin to post his many curse word deleted journal of our carnage against his horrible waveS of evil. It was not without casualty however on our end, and there were quite a few actually. Unfortunately for all of you rooting for our enemies (which we don't mind and it gives many of us more drive to do better back), I will say that so far, we were victorious twice today. After Turin posts, I will post my perspective of this AMAZINE fight.

Also, since so many of you love to torture us with comments about what is to come, I thought I would return the favor with that tease of my previous comment today. :)

Hello all, I am sitting here in the carnage. All I can say is Turin HATES fort saves against massive trauma.

Prepping backup mage character. Don't worry, it won't be too painful; for me at least. :)

We continued our hunt for the legendary monsters of the island of dread. Our first encounter was with Baaragrauth, a caller from the deep. This monster was not much of a challenge once we had our spells all ready to go. We knew we found it when half of the ship’s crew were preparing to jump ship. I stepped up to see what it was, not knowing yet what we faced. I recognized it immediately, but couldn’t step back from its call. It overtook my natural reasoning and all I wanted to do for several seconds was go down to it and wait. I was spared from a horrible fate by Torsin who understood what it did and granted me immunity to its call. Ineptus charged a circling fiendish shark, ready to grab a free meal, but didn’t give it a chance to grab one. The rest of us moved in to finish off the vile monster. The admiral and I got into position to start hacking and slacking. Appetizer came in to give us some more buffing but failed to protect against its reach and I spared her the damage with a new magical item I purchased for just this purchase. This monster the three melee machines didn’t mean for a long fight. It died, leaving no trophy or treasure, but another monster of legend was defeated.

The second to last monster I feel should have been dealt with differently but we work as a team and stuck together. I have heard that powerful healing spells which were just out of our reach can cure creatures of insanity. This monster had been eating loco-weed for a very long time and has become insane. When we decided that we would rather put it out of its misery. I felt that since we were already flying and it had no known methods of dealing with ranged opponents. I thought that we should stay up high and pelt it to death with spells and arrows. Since the captain and Sir Ineptus do not have ranged options, we decided to just attack like usual our opponent. I tried to sneak up on this beast but it noticed me despite being invisible. We all moved into position and Sir Ineptus charged the beast getting off 5 attacks at once against it, knocking it near death. It didn’t last through any more onslaught before it died. Unlike most enemies, this one exploded upon death, it knocked almost everybody down to near death. It actually killed the captain who came back in a Gnoll body and appetizer turned into a pit of goo from the sudden explosion. Despite having some personal resolves about killing this second monster, something needed to be done about this threat.

I have been busy other than fighting off these monsters. I have purchased a second ship and have the appetizer’s extra crewmen manning it for me. It will bring in 15,000 every 6 months. Once I get enough sailors of my own, I will receive 20,000 every 6 months worth of traveling. Also, the reincarnation I received a long time ago removed my ability to continue the family name with another human. I found a way using powerful magic to temporarily correct this issue and am now expecting a child. Since she is bearing my child, I married her and made her acting captain of the kraken. I cannot having her around with us considering the danger we face daily.

I am delighted in my ignorance of The Magic Item Compendium.
(Does it really contain every item that WotC had printed in a core-rules or splat-book for 3.5 upto that point?)

NB
How long is transporting and stuffing an Anklyosaurus likely to take? The happy thought occurs to me that even in death, the poor demented dinosaur may have its revenge, by there not being time for the PCs to transport and stuff it- unless they're not in any kind of a hurry.

We can not stuff that poor guy. When he died, he exploded and killed two party members and severly hurt the rest of us. As for stuffing monsters, we figured out the cost using a feat in players handbook II for trophies based on the creatures CR and an appropiate cost. The time to stuff is based on the craft skill and basic rules. I have several taxidermiests of my own that do the stuffing for the party at cost.

As for the MIC book, it does not have "ever" item printed, but it has an extensive collection of items, some have been changed from the original printing. Also, turin has changed the abilities of an item two for sanity reasons.

Your players killed an innocent, (mostly) harmless, vegetation-munching dinosaur, instead of subduing him and maybe trying to keep him as a pet? (He had a ridiculously low Will save, for goodness sake- what on Oerth is a Beguiler for if not for making friends with critters like this?) Ah, if only this most noble of dinosaurs had had a Mirror Image spell-like ability.

I sincerely feel for you, Turin.

In at least my defense, before attacking, I asked if anybody wanted to acquire a scroll of heal or the like to cure the monster of it's insanity from all of the local vegatation. Also, the last thing turin wants is another "pet" for the group. We already have 6 half celestial griffon mounts on the way. We did him a favor by not acquiring yet another pet to torture him with. Also, we are starting up a trophy hall on the island of dread and I need to keep my taxidermy lackies busy with new trophies.

Nor me. There was a kill count however. Nothing permanent but we had deaths, this time.

This means that interfaith blessing do not stack.

With the Crimson fleet crushed, we have moved on to dealing with other dangerous enemies in the area. Our first stop was to crush a plant monster on some island around the Island of Dread. We prepared for combat as soon as we got off the ship. I asked the flying appetizer to protect me from being pinned down by this monster; my general knowledge of most plant monsters told me that a common tactic was constricting their foes to death. Unfortunately, I forgot to thing to tell Sir Ineptus about this. We are marching along and nobody notice it when it ambushed us. It came close to Torsin but it fortunately went after Sir Ineptus which resulted in a nasty attack, constricting like I predicted. It was fortunately a short fight. We spelled up quickly and it dropped within seconds of the Admiral’s our new friend a griffon which is lacking a nickname… for now, Torsin and my own attacks. The journalist did something unexpected but very helpful; she moved into range of Sir Ineptus and provides healing to him, while being throttled by the beast. Despite its best efforts, it did not last long against all of us. It was an excellent experience, being the largest plant I have ever seen, but it’s treasure was most impressive. Inside we found a stone that within it contained 6 life stones, they are absorbed into the body and upon death, revive you instantly and do considerable healing as well.

We next moved on to another island not far away where the largest scorpion I have ever heard of apparently roamed. Our spell casters prepared a spell to prevent any poison from having any effect on us all day to prevent the very dangerous venom of this creature from hindering us. This monster proved even easier to destroy than the plant we fought not a day before. Considering it was the side of a barn, we had several minutes to spell up. Yet again, Sir Ineptus was grabbed by the enemy while the rest of us wailed on it with incredible force. With all the spells up, each attack does considerably more damage than normally and with all of us delivering might attacks, not even this monster survived long. We found the same treasure in this beast, several more life gems, one again for each of us.

The last fight we had recently was against a might dragon turtle. It has been destroying trade ships and if we wanted to do efficient trade with other ports, this monster needed to go. We prepared many power buffing spells to allow all of us to move and fly underwater easily. I got a beat on the creature and decided to wait till it came within range to ready an attack of might force if it should charge us. Unfortunately, due to a lack of communication, Sir Ineptus charged it and it did not get within range of my attack. It shot out a might blast of steam that severely hurt several member of the party. Wasting no more time, I charged behind it and hit it right on its shell backbone. I delivered the most powerful blow I have ever achieved 98 damage in one attack with low die rolls As the admiral, Sir Hexen and the griffon attacked as well, it was slain. The griffon still needs some training, it did not protect its rider as it moved in and the dragon turtle almost killed the appetizer. This fight had the largest treasure haul yet, between the 6 of us, we found 90,000 gp worth of gold, silver and other gems. I now have a lot of money to spend on some new gear. We have only the most powerful creatures of legend on the isle left and we will need everything we can get.

I have been considering something also for the Kraken, my ship. I have been discussing with Torsin about the cost of a device that would summon a giant squid from the ship to attack other ships. If I invest the life force required for this device, I should be able to afford it now; too many choices, not enough gold.

www.d20srd.org is a accurate site. The site is kept up to date with the errata and online clarifications. I have found no errors in this site and I constantly use it instead of the books. I does differ from the books but only because of errata and other wizards official rulings.

Hey, I got the hack and slash crit, not Sir Ineptus. I almost broke the 100 damage barrier from a single attack too; 98 damage from a single attack, grrrrr.

I am thinking about not posting my characters personal opinions all that much more if it is going to cause problems. This is supposed to be a personal journal of his thoughts. My character is C/G so he is also not totally inclined to following plans or orders if he feels that it is the right thing, and he does not like conceding to authorities. Although it is not the best way of dealing with things he is expressing his angst with the leader especially when he really wanted to take more direct care of the cities apparent immediate threat. He feels like we were saved by nothing but pure luck, and he doesn't like that one bit with a whole city on the line.

I can only speak for myself but unless I am putting [ o o c ] around what I post, it is a character opinion on a matter. I make sure that I do this to disguinsh between what I think and what owen thinks.

On a side note, as things have been going on I have been finding it a little funny that our dear cleric of Kord seems to be a bit of a contradiction. Yeah he can kick butt, but he does so with no weapon in hand. The least he could do is pick up a sword. Kord him self uses a great sword... I am sure Kord would aprove of my new favorite weapon, Jovar, but with the recent disregard of the city in our last fight has got me thinking how un-Kordian our cleric is.

The Might Kord is the god of kicking butt, period. He fully respects any form of physical combat and any magic to augment it. The Admiral is a powerful ally and in a combat, I would be placing money on him anyday vs yourself. Also, kord respects oaths like the Admiral has taken to never use a weapon in combat. There is no one right way to worship kord or be a true kordian; there is just the right way for each person to do so.

Oh, the might crimson fleet finally came, and they hardly stuck around. It was a wonder fight. I was thinking that they were going to be this awesome fleet of pirates and the like and the group of us took on the entire attack party at once. We used the outlet in the harbor as a outpost where we stayed up until the attack happened. In the middle of the night, there was a thick fog concealing their approach. We quickly got into the water all together with the one adamantine weapon we had with the plan of breaking the keel of each ship till they figured out what was happening. Instead, we notice the flag ship with all of the support they had all lumped together. We snuck through the water and climbed up onto their ship and caught them off guard. We found 3 vrocks, a team of semi-impressive archers and a finger wiggler that was quite powerful. The other man was vanthas at one point; he now had wings and other fiendish appendeges. With my new holy weapon and the crystal of even more holy damage, each swing was well over twice as effective against most of these fiends. Vanthas was their leader but unfortunatually, he did not get to die at my hands. I dealt with one of the vrocks and let loose the final blow against the mage. Vanthas was the last to die, he came down on the ship and tried to escape a buttercup; buttercup is a griffon and a did most of the fighting against him. Once we had him down, he pulled out what I recognized as something we found at the last savage tide we encountered. I did not have enough time to stop him from breaking this jewel open. It had a horrible smell and started eating away at the ship. I didn't know what it would do but I didn't need to know that someone like that doesn't break something of that nature for nothing. Assuming the worst, that it would explode like a great fireball and destroy us all. I asked for a fly from torsin and ripped the deck right from the ship and put as much distance between me and the town and ships. The acid within was horrific and has permenantly scared me; my beard is not growing back but it is a minor cost to save the lives of the entire town. The best part, other than some spores from the vrocks, nobody was able to land a single blow against me.

Other than that jewel, we destroyed the entire fleet save for four golems that made it ashore and they were destroyed by the forces that were made to defend off hundreds of men or worse. We did not suffer a single death amounst our forces. Kord is shining stong with us and a great celebration is already underway. Maybe it will convert the rest of the town to kord and get rid of the other lesser gods.

We recieve much loot from the pirates, but the best treasure was our own ships. I inherented the kraken and intend to make it the most feared ship on the sea. I have heard of a powerful spell that can summon a mighty squid and would like to augment my ship with the ability to summon that monster for any assault we make. There will be no sleep for me for a while, I have a ship to upgrade and make a might part of our new fleet of ships. When we sail back home full of supplies, I should be able to afford some serious upgrades to this ship.
