Society play returns to the University of Guelph in Southern Ontario April 14th and 16th. This is the first time since Covid shut us all down. Don't worry if everything looks full we're adding new slots.

All games are Pathfinder 2nd edition.

We already have 18 sessions and growing.

Sign up is here: http://www.gryphcon.org/

Please reply below if you are interested in GMing or running something else (like Starfinder).

Thanks!

It's a death effect, but it doesn't specify that it is negative energy damage.

Do all death effects deals negative energy damage? Inflict Light wounds specify that it is negative energy damage.

If you are immune to negative energy and energy drain are you immune to the damage caused by Finger of Death/Destruction/Wail of the Banshee?

Does the Obsessive Gnome feat apply to an existing skill or does it grant an extra Lore skill selection?

How do people adjudicate the monster requirement of needing to hit a creature with a specific attack, if that attack was the monsters last action?

Does it carry over to the next round? If the player is still adjacent to the monster on the monsters next round does the trigger still exist?

For example, if a Shadow hits with it's Shadow Hand strike on it's last action and the PC is still next to the monster, can it start it's next round with Steal Shadow?

That's the way I've been playing it, but I wanted to see how others have been doing it.

What speed do players climb at in exploration mode?

In Doomsday Dawn characters have a 4-mile climb, how do we figure how long that takes?

I know difficult terrain halves movement speed and greater difficult terrain drops it to a third, but climbing is even slower than that (5 feet on a successful check).

Thoughts?

Jason Buhlman posted this:

Fifth, there are a few pieces of early errata that we need to get up immediately.
All PCs are trained in being unarmored.

Does that mean they get their level to AC when not wearing any armor?

The rules state:

If you’ve been trained in the statistic or item, your
proficiency modifier is equal to your level.

I just got a notice that my Playtest material is expected to ship mid to late July, is this correct?

I thought it wasn't being shipped until Aug 2.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I just want to know when to expect it.

Are the playtest books going to be available on Amazon.ca? Right now they are listed as currently unavailable:

They're big books and I want to get the shipping costs lower.

If you score a critical with a weapon with the Arc critical, do you have to use it?

The text says you can choose who the weapon arcs to, but what if there's only PC's nearby? Can you waive off the crit?

Because the people in my party are getting tired of taking damage from my good rolls.

When I was looking at purchasing Starfinder my shipping fee came to $46.00. Is that Correct?

I live in Ontario, Canada, and it seems excessive for one book and almost doubles the price.

Also, I wasn't able to see what the additional fee would be if I shipped it with my prescription. Can you let me know the shipping cost if I ship it with my next shipment?

My son wanted me to try and duplicate Reinhardt from Overwatch and I've come up with the following:

Dwarf Fighter (Seigebreaker/Foehammer)

This covers the rocket charge and "Hammer Down" abilities. Seigebreaker allows for damaging bullrushes (and overruns) and Foehammer allows for striking the ground and knocking people prone (by 13th level). I was thinking of getting an Animated Shield to cover his shield, and maybe the body guard feats.

His primary weapon would be a Dwarven Long Hammer.

Stats

S- 16
D- 12
C- 18
I- 10
W- 12
Ch- 6

I'm looking for feat advice (and any other suggestions) past 7th (to 15th).

Feats

1st Power Attack
2nd Taken
3rd Improved Bullrush
4th Disruptive
5th Improved Overrun
6th Greater Overrun
7th Greater Bullrush

At 7th, the character can initiate a bull rush, which does (STR+2+armor enhancement bonus) damage. The bull rush also provokes from all of my allies. At the end of the bull rush he can attempt an overrun that does (STR+2+armor enhancement bonus) damage. The overrun , and can knock the opponent prone, which would provoke an attack of opportunity.

And, if the target is still standing, he'd get a free trip attempt (Hammer to the Ground Foehammer ability).

By 11th, he could do all this after a successful attack (as a standard action), as well as attempt to disorient the target:

Disorienting Blow (Ex)

At 8th level, as an immediate action, a siegebreaker can distract a foe he just hit with an attack or combat maneuver, imposing a –2 penalty on the foe's attack rolls, caster level checks, or skill checks for 1 round. The foe can negate this penalty with a successful Fortitude save (DC = 10 + 1/2 the siegebreaker's fighter level + his Strength modifier). At 14th level, the penalty increases to –4.

This ability replaces the bonus feat gained at 8th level.

I'm thinking about playing a vigilante in PFS and I'm wondering how do people deal with the whole secret identity thing with the other players?

Do you just come out and say, "I'm also the Scarlet Rapier"? Or do you pretend to have a body guard that is waiting in the wings?

Hi all,

I want to see what our fine community can come up with for a Reinhardt from Overwatch build.

I've started looking at it but I just don't have much time.

My first thought (and as far as I got) was using the Siege Breaker Fighter archetype.

Build rules:

To standardize this, let's make it PFS (Pathfinder Society) compatible:
20 points
12th level max
assorted other restrictions

Lets see what people can do.

Can you essentially slow an action down? If something is a swift action, can you use a move action to do it instead?

For example, if you have two swift actions you want to perform, can you do one as a move action?

I'm trying to create an NPC Armorer to see how high I could get his craft without magic. My goal is to get one who can make DC 40 taking 10.

We're using the alternate crafting rules from Pathfinder Unchained.

I made a dwarf (15 point build), I didn't want to twink him too much so didn't go super crazy on his Int (I have to be reasonable for the GM to allow it):

dwarf lvl 8

S - 12
D - 10
C - 14
I - 14+2=16 (stat boost from levels)
W - 14
Ch - 12

Craft Armor - 8 (base)+3 (int)+3 (class skill)+3 (Skill Focus)+2 (Master Craftsman)+2 (Craftsman Racial ability)+2 (Masterwork tools)=23+6 (2 skilled aid another's using a Masterwork forge)=29

Feats:
Skill Focus
Master Craftsman

Alternate Racial ability:
Craftsman

Any thoughts on how to get one more (non-magical) +1?

If I can't find any other way to get a +1 I'll spend the points getting him the 18 int.

Note: No traits allowed because this is an NPC.

With the changes to the Invulnerable Rager Archetype (primarily the Barbarian Rage Power Increased Damage Reduction not stacking), are we able to make any changes to our characters to accommodate this?

Specifically, I have a level 11 Invulnerable Rager where I took Increased Damage Reduction multiple times for my Rage Power, and I took Extra Rage Power multiple times for my feats (where I took Increased Damage Reduction).

Am I (and other's who probably did this) just stuck with these now useless choices, or are we able to make any changes to our character?

Liberty's Edge

Hi all,

Why am I getting charged 36.85 in shipping for my two books in my subscription?

When I test order the books shipping is only 10.11 (not counting Canadian conversion).

Thanks,

Liberty's Edge

Earlier this week I got an email stating my Beginners Box wasn't going to be available until June or July. I bought the Humble Bundle so that the physical copy would be available for my sons birthday in April.

Is this true? Is the Beginner Box not available until June? If so, I may have to cancel the box (or donate it, or whatever), because I'll have to buy it locally and I don't want to pay for the shipping.

I replied to the email, but I haven' heard anything and I'm running out of time.

I hope something can be done for this.

Thanks,

Matt

The Pilgrimage event states:

Pilgrimage (settlement): Randomly select one settlement with a Cathedral, Shrine, or Temple. Pious religious folk journey to your settlement, holding a religious festival in that settlement at no BP cost to you.

But it doesn't actually list what a religious festival does?

Is this listed somewhere that I've missed?

I'm thinking of combining the adventures in Season 4 that deal with the rise of the Cult of Lissala and other adventures in Magnimar with the Shattered Star AP.

What adventures from Season 4 would people recommend?

I know the list starts with:

The Rise of the Goblin Guild

and ends with

The Waking Rune

But what adventures in between should I consider?

Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

Trample
As a full-round action, a creature with the trample ability can attempt to overrun any creature that is at least one size category Smaller than itself. This works just like the overrun combat maneuver, but the trampling creature does not need to make a check, it merely has to move over opponents in its path.

Can you make an overrun check if you want to knock the creatures prone?
If you have improved overrun and you knock the creatures prone, can you take an Aoo?

Liberty's Edge

Hi all,

I just realized I actually got the Add-on deck in my base set and don't need it. Could you cancel that from order 2705443. The rest of the order is fine.

Lets keep a list of those heroic Pathfinders who have fallen at GenCon in service of the Society here.

Here's a template:

Name:
Class/Level:
Faction:
Details:

Most of me hopes it's a small list, but the CN side is looking for some carnage.

But all of me hopes everyone has fun.

Since encounter readied actions as both a player and GM (showing me both sides of them) I was wondering how specific do players have to be when naming the trigger for a readied action?

For instance would you allow:

"I ready to attack as soon as that guy does anything?"

Meaning if the target moves/attacks/casts a spell/drinks a potion etc... the player would get their readied action.

Or do they have to be much more specific?

"I ready to attack as soon as that guy casts a spell"

Meaning that if the target does anything other than casting a spell your readied action is wasted.

When I was a GM I was probably a little harsh with requirements, but as a player I can see that it can be a big pain and sometimes a little silly.

Like readying to attack when an opponent attacks but having to stand there if all they do is run (even if they run right by the player).

Thoughts?

Could you remove the guide to darkmoon vale from this order?

Since Genrecon has priced itself into oblivion (at least for me, and my friends in the area), does anyone know what's being offered at Gryphcon's Shadow?

For those who don't know about it, Gryphcon's Shadow is a one day, warm up event, at the University of Guelph, University Centre. It's on Oct 20th, and runs from 10 til midnight.

Thanks,

Matt

Hello there,

I received Paths of Prestige instead of From Hell's Heart with this order.

How do we proceed from here?

Matt

Is there any way to do Order # 2144454 differently to reduce the shipping?

Would sending it (or some of it) with my monthly order reduce the shipping?

I'm not in a big hurry to get these items so slower and cheaper works for me.

Thanks,

Matt

When I use snake style to replace my AC with my sense motive check result, are there any other bonus's that can be applied to my new sense motive AC?

Like fighting defensively, or a ring of protection, or haste, or any other outside source of AC?

Does the Eidolon Rake work the same as the standard rake or does it work differently?

Eidolon Rake looks like it works every time the Eidolon succeeds on a grapple check.

With the standard Rake the creature doing the raking must start the round in a grapple.

Do the two rakes work differently?

When you drop unconscious do you have to use Die Hard? Can you choose to instead make the stabilization check to get the healing from Deny Death?

Deny Death states:

Spoiler:
Benefit: As long as you have 1 ki point in your ki pool, when you fail your Constitution check to stabilize, you do not lose 1 hit point. If you succeed at the check, you can spend 1 ki point to heal 1d6 hit points. If you roll a natural 20 on the check to stabilize, you can spend 1 ki point to heal 2d6 hit points of damage instead.

And Die Hard states:

Spoiler:
Benefit: When your hit point total is below 0, but you are not dead, you automatically stabilize. You do not need to make a Constitution check each round to avoid losing additional hit points. You may choose to act as if you were disabled, rather than dying. You must make this decision as soon as you are reduced to negative hit points (even if it isn't your turn). If you do not choose to act as if you were disabled, you immediately fall unconscious.

When using this feat, you are staggered. You can take a move action without further injuring yourself, but if you perform any standard action (or any other action deemed as strenuous, including some swift actions, such as casting a quickened spell) you take 1 point of damage after completing the act. If your negative hit points are equal to or greater than your Constitution score, you immediately die.

I'm not sure if I can choose which feat to use.

I have two orders pending:

1892179
1928120

Is it possible to combine those orders and would that reduce my overall shipping costs?

Thanks.

Liberty's Edge

I ordered a gift certificate but never saw how to send it via email (or their paizo name) to the person I wanted to have it.

Is there any way to do that after the order?

Is the spear introduced in Pathfinder #10 35 legal for PFS play?

If not, does anyone have a suggestion for a decent non-standard 2-handed weapon for my Gnome BardBarian?

Thanks

*

I just recently finished the 5-6 lvl Rebel's Ransome and

Spoiler:
After taking rought 180 points of damage through the entire adventure, I ended with:
- only my rage HP's keeping me standing,
- Evil Eye'd by a hag (staggered for 3 days)
- and suffering from mummy rot.

It took days of suffering the mummy rot before the combination of remove curse and remove disease could cure the rot, and then I could be healed.

This got me wondering how badly mangled other people have been though/at the end of a Society adventure.

Without actually dying, of course. Unless it was a really mangled death, I've seen a guy killed and then animated as a zombie in a society fight. That was pretty mean.

I have a few questions using the throwing shield from the Ultimate Combat book:

1) What type of shield is it? Light, Heavy?
2) Does it do the listed 1d6 damage (for medium) on a bash or only when thrown?
3) Does throwing count as a shield bash (i.e. do feats and magics that apply to bashing apply when a shield is thrown, like the Bashing magic enhancement)?
4) Do you only need exotic weap - throwing shield, and a throwing shield, to effectively use the weapon (no throw anything, or various equipement tricks)?

Thoughts?

Does it all just come back when they are banished and re-summoned?

Also, if an Eidolon has a disease, does he still have it when he is banished and re-summoned?

Does he have to make fort saves even when he's not summoned?

Thoughts?

I'm looking at a Martial Artist/Barbarian and I was wondering if the Brawler rage power would increase a Monk's unarmed damage.

Brawler
Benefit: While raging, the barbarian is treated as if she has Improved Unarmed Strike. If she already has the feat, her unarmed strikes deal 1d6 points of damage (1d4 if she is Small).

So I suppose the question is, does Brawler increase the damage dice up by one step, or does it just set it to the number stated in the description.

For example, if it just increases the damage by the amount in the description then what would it do for large size Barbarians?

So after 6 months (several non-exercise related illnesses and injuries doubled the 90 days, including losing 6 weeks to a snowshoveling inspired back injury at the start) I have finished P90X.

Wow that was hard.

End result: I went from 252 to 210, my fitness is at least as good as it was in high school/university (I'm 38) if not better, and I can actually do chin ups (big long time goal).

I ignored the diet portion for the most part, it's hard when you're also buying for two small, picky kids. Though I did improve my eating, by eating less, not eating after dinner, giving up cabonated drinks (for a long while at least), and making healthier choices.

The two things I tell most people about P90X is:

"If you do what it says, it does what it says."

and

"It's not for everyone."

You should have a certain level of fitness to do this, those are some tough workouts. I think I was just barely in enough shape to do it. It also takes up a lot of time.

Now that I've finished the "90" days, I'm slowing down to doing an exercise every other day (one on Monday or Tuesday, one on Thursday or Friday, one on Saturday or Sunday), plus the Ab excerise on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We'll see how that works.

Feel free to ask me any questions if you're thinking of doing it. It was a very worthwhile struggle.

What's the name of the feat that allows you to mix primary and off-hand attacks interchangably?

I think it only works with a shield but I may be wrong on that.

Thanks,

Who do I have to bribe, and what do I have to bribe them with to get my subscriptions sent out in the first batches.

I always (well, the last two releases anyway) seem to have my subscriptions sent out last.

I evidently do not have the patience to wait that long for my PDF.

So instead of correcting the flaw in my character, I've decided to remove it's source.

Names and dollar value's would be appreciated.

Hi Customer Service people,

I received order number 1731065, mailed June 30, yesterday.

However, I have not received orders 1715180 and 1719468, mailed June 21 and June 15, yet.

I am Canadian, so I'm starting to wonder if they got lost in the strike.

Any help you can give is appreciated.

16 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

In the Players Companion Gnomes book the Flickmace did not have its descriptive text (which is necessary for an odd weapon), while the SwitchScythe did not have any game stats for it.

Also the description for the SwitchSycthe also contained some inexact wording (around the hidden properties of the weapon) that didn't make sense.

Spoiler:
This scythe has a spring-loaded blade that folds down into the weapon’s handle. Opening the scythe blade is a swift action, and closing it again is a standard action. To the uninitiated, this weapon can pass for an oddly shaped staff (Bluff check DC 15). Sneaky gnomes sometimes disguise the apparatus with paper maché or a thin layer of clay painted to look like wood, increasing the Bluff DC to 20 (this disguise is ruined when the weapon is opened, but it may be reapplied).

Does that mean it counts as a DC 15 bluff check? Requiring a DC Sense motive or perception to notice?

I know there was discussion about this in the posting for the book but there was nothing conclusive (or nothing at all). Has anyone seen this elsewhere?

MotEH treat all normal weapons as improvised weapons, so do they still need the Catch of Guard feat to avoid the -4 penalty for using improvised weapons? How about for normal improvised weapons (like a shovel)?

Relevant text:

Spoiler:

Monk of the Empty Hand
The monk of the empty hand eschews normal weapons in favor of whatever is lying around—rocks, chair legs, flagons of ale, even a simple quill pen all become deadly weapons in the hands of such a monk. A monk of the empty hand draws on his own ki to infuse his improvised weapons with power, and can transform a broken bottle into a magical weapon.

Weapon and armor Proficiency

Monks of the empty hand are proficient with the shuriken only. A monk of the empty hand treats normal weapons as improvised weapons with the following equivalencies (substituting all of their statistics for the listed weapon): a light weapon functions as a light hammer, a one-handed weapon functions as a club, and a Two-handed weapon functions as a quarterstaff. This replaces the normal monk weapon proficiencies.

Flurry of Blows (Ex)
Starting at 1st level, a monk of the empty hand can make a flurry of blows using any combination of unarmed strikes or attacks with an improvised weapon. He may not make a flurry of blows with any other weapons, including special monk weapons. A monk of the empty hand’s flurry of blows otherwise functions as normal for a monk of his level.
