Appearance & Personality:
Appearance: Bryn is a tall, slim man with a lithe build. He looks ordinary, his face attractive but not enough to turn heads. He has short, usually messy dark brown hair and brown eyes. When among his own family, he naturally carries himself loosely, his posture relaxed. He prefers comfortable clothes when possible. Outside of the house, his appearance and manner changes from disguise to disguise, but his usual cover is a wealthy merchant, his back straight and rigid, his manners elegant and noble, and his clothes displaying ostentatious wealth. Personality: Bryn is generally content with his life and prefers to relax and not worry. His loyalty rests with his house and he has much pride in it. He is generally likeable and generally likes others as well. He isn't afraid to commit unsavory acts but prefers to avoid it when he can. His only principles are that what he can do for his house, he will do for his house. Despite his loyalty to the whole of house Ausum, his entire devotion is with one of the family, his best friend, Cerny Ausum.
History:
Born to the Goao line of spies and assassins loyal to house Ausum, Bryn already had a potential future waiting for him. An early meeting with Cerny, a member about his age of the house which he was to serve, solidified his decision to continue his family's work. His childhood was spent learning the trade, mostly under his father's tutelage. His family's cover was of a merchant's and he learned to do business while secretly focusing on espionage. His father's work, both public and private, meant he spent much time with the Ausums and Bryn was usually in the company of Cerny, which only served to make him more enamored with the slightly older boy. When Cerny was old enough to choose a personal retainer, he picked Bryn. Mostly, Bryn accompanied Cerny wherever he went, not only to important events but also to mundane everyday activities, serving as both protection and, more importantly, companion. Life was mostly quiet, save for a few attempts of kidnapping or assassination. Bryn continued to hone himself while Cerny studied and negotiated. Since his father's death, Bryn has since become the last of the pure Goao line. He has since been delegated most of the tasks which fell onto his father. The head of house has also asked to send him on several sensitive matters, which Cerny agreed to. Since hearing of the diplomatic mission, house Ausum has devoted itself to supporting it, not only to keep Amular, and by extension themselves, safe but also to look out for their own interests. For this reason, they have sent out Bryn on Cerny's recommendation.
House Ausum:
The Ausum family has a long history of trading in the northwestern region of Amular. They do business not only with far-off nations but also maintain an extensive merchant network throughout the kingdom and keep safe the trade routes. They preserve their economic might through a combination of political agility, trading policies, and economic espionage. Their control of and alliances with powerful thieves' guilds, organized crime syndicates, and spy networks only consolidate their power throughout the kingdom. Despite some of their unsavory methods, they despise conflict and prefer to deal with things amiably, preferably under the table or behind the back. Recent generations have also seen lessened use of espionage within the borders of Amular due to the lack of competition with most under their jurisdiction or otherwise allied to them. The Ausum house has provided support, financial or otherwise, to Amular's government and to many of Amular's noble families. Publicly, they are held in good light. However, there are some who would be glad to see the house fall, especially those who feel they have been wronged by them. Despite their importance, they are one of the smallest and enigmatic of the noble families, their main estate in the distant northwestern region helping keep them out of sight. While the family itself keeps many loyal servants and retainers (some of them extended family) for their own protection and for keeping track of their many schemes, the actual blood members of the family is few. The most recent head of house is Dalibor Ausum. The large man is married to the fair Adela. They have two children Tereza and Cerny. Tereza is the eldest at 32 years and is due to take over as head of house, having been groomed and working extensively with their less legal connections. Cerny is 28 and is more suited to being an accountant and diplomat, dealing more with merchants and politicians. There was a third child, Jindrich, who was born in the middle but died young due to an assassination attempt. All members of the family have their own personally chosen close retainer. Dalibor favors Arian, a tall dark-skinned man in charge of the family's finances. Adela has Lidia, a wise elven woman who advises on matters that concern religion and magic. Tereza favors Cadel, a battle-hardened half-orc warrior, while Cerny favors Bryn, a loyal spy. House Ausum's sigil is a black crane in ancient gold water. Their motto is "Change Through Movement".
Goao Line:
Originally leaders of a bandit group in northern Amular. Slowly incorporated into house Ausum through agreements and threats before they started working for them as it was more profitable. The Goao line progressed from bandits to spies and assassins. However, they still retained their leadership abilities and the Goao line came to be head of the entirety of house Ausum's spy rings. Traditionally, the head of the Goao line is house Ausum's spymaster. The Goao flourished during house Ausum's rise. When spying on competition became less of an importance, the Goao were still important due to keeping track of in-house affairs, most known for executing traitors discreetly. Recent generations have seen their decline as the spy rings became less centralized and many have sought the Goao for revenge. They head of the line stills holds the official title of spymaster but it's become more of a formality. The Goao take in orphans and strays, having them become if not assassins or spies, then at least informants. The decision on whether or not to take the Goao name is up to them. Bryn Goao is the current spymaster and head of the line. While he has many 'cousins' and 'siblings', he is the last of those that can be traced to the original line by blood. His father and previous spymaster, Desmond Goao, established a cover of identity of a merchant working with house Ausum, legitimately trading and managing a profitable business in the capital. Since Desmond's death, Bryn has taken over. Most of the work is done off-site, requiring only appearances at events and important meetings, allowing flexibility for the spymaster to conduct 'inspections' and 'appraisals' in other areas of the nation. As such, he is often stated to be on 'business trips'.
