Background:
In 476 Bran was born to Madog, brother of Aled. Both the brothers were sons of Ercwlff. The family of Ercwlff were breeders of horses and dogs. Native Cymri, they had long provided the nobility of Salisbury with quality animals. They boasted that they'd been breeding war dogs since as far back as when the Romans came and their molossors mixed with the Cymric mastiffs. In 477 Aled was called up by Earl Roderick of Salisbury to defend against the invasions of King Aelle's Saxons in the east. The next year Aled again fought with Aurelius Ambrosius on the continent against the Frisians. So great was his valor that he was awarded knighthood and the manor of Tisbury. Bran's early years were spent on the farm of Madog, tending to the animals and hunting in the wooded hills surround their home. When Bran was fourteen Madog got a pneumonia and died. Madog had three other children, two daughters and another son Trefor. Aled had loved his brother dearly and was dismayed at his death. Aled never married or produced any heirs (he was a closeted homosexual). He knew that he would never have a son, so he decided to squire Bran so that his brother's son might inherit Tisbury some day, and keep the manor in the family. He brought the proposal to Bran and his mother, both of whom agreed it was for the best. Bran was sorry to leave his home and family, but he was also excited to serve as his uncle's squire and learn the ways of knighthood. He brought his most promising pup with him, a huge brindle specimen he named Blaidd. In 491 he officially became his uncle's squire. He enjoyed the work, and took to practicing all the knightly weapons with great gusto. He was already a skilled rider, but he learned to fight from horseback under his uncle's tutelage. Aled never let him participate in an actual battle, lest Bran die and he loose his intended heir. In 492 he accompanied Aled and King Uther on his campaign to conquer Cornwall. That was where Bran got his first glimpse of the hell of war. It instilled in him a deep and simmering rage at the cruelty of men. He saw that men were just fancy animals, no better than the dogs they claim ownership over. Men were worse in fact, not even the cruelest of beasts wages war. Bran was present at King Uther's wedding to Igraine, though he was so far back that he couldn't see anything. At the feast afterwards he and Aled were at the lowest table of gentry, but he didn't mind. The food was still good, and there was as much wine as he could drink. From 493 to 495 Aled and Bran participated in the campaigns against Octa and Eosa. It all culminated in the recent battle of St. Albans where Bran watched a barbarian who was screaming out to Wotan cleave his uncle's skull in twain with a heavy iron battle axe. All the fury and disgust Bran felt towards battle that had been building up over the past few years burst like a broken dam. He understood then why men fought. Aled had been closer to him than Madog ever was. Madog knew only hard work and the ways of beasts, Aled had taught Bran the ways of honor and war. They had lived through hell together. Bran picked up his uncle's lance and called Blaidd to his side. Then he ran forward and impaled the Saxon who'd murdered his uncle. By the end of the battle Bran and Blaidd were soaked in blood, and six more Saxons had met their end on the tip of Bran's lance or under Blaidd's fangs. As the victorious Britons were celebrating, a treacherous Saxon, masquerading as a doctor, poisoned the water. The king and most the reigning nobility died. In the confusion after the battle, Bran collected Aled's horse, weapons and armor. He made the arrangements for his uncle's funeral, and saw him buried in the pagan way back in Tisbury. Just as he started to hear rumors that people were calling him "Mad Dog", Sir Amig and Sir Leo summoned Bran to be knighted under the authority of Lady Ellen of Salisbury. It was no surprise to Bran, he was ready. He'd known he was his uncle's heir for a long time. He packed his things and made his way to the ceremony.
Personality:
Rustic; Bran is from a rural area and his ways are common, despite his impending knighthood. Loyal; Bran is loyal to the bone, like the dogs he's spent most of his life with. Laid Back; Bran lets most things roll off his shoulders. He prefers to avoid conflict, and isn't overly ambitious. Temper; He doesn't normally get mad, but when Bran does loose his temper, it is terrifying. Curious; Bran prefers to understand the why of everything around him, even when it might get him into trouble. Nature Lover; Bran is more at home under the sky than a roof. He understands the ways of nature and considers himself to be a part of it, not separate from it. His Cymric pagan religious beliefs encourage this connection and treat it as holy.
Description
Bran ap Madog is tall for his era, as are most Cymri. He has broad shoulders and a well muscled frame. His skin is very pale, though the parts not covered by clothing or armor are ruddy from exposure to the wind and sun. His hair is a short shaggy black affair, shoved back from his forehead so habitually as to be permanently stuck in that direction. His brow is heavy, and his clean shaven facial features craggy and slate like. He looks somehow primitive, despite his fine courtier’s clothes and armor. He is shadowed by a large brindle mastiff, clearly not yet full grown but already upwards of seventy pounds. |
