About Botu from Goka

Botu from Goka was once a man on the run. A passable merchant and poor gambler, Botu got himself into a massive pile of debt betting on tiam jeuk and ran afoul of a Golden League loan shark, fleeing for his life across the sea to Absalom with whatever possessions he could cram into his pack. Botu has since regained much of his wealth and influence in Absalom, and participated in the official disbanding of the Lantern Lodge, himself retiring from the life of a Pathfinder to instead open up a shop in the Stolen Lands where his occasionally-dubious wares find more acceptance (and far less government scrutiny). With his tanuki associate Pao Jun, Botu keeps an open and honest relationship with the rulers of the newfound nation, reporting when exceedingly dangerous or overtly evil items appear in his shop from his many illicit contacts. At the moment, discussions are ongoing as to what to do with a sealed iron flask that purportedly contains an ancient evil.

Botu has a controlling share in a caravan whose travels take it all across Avistan, and even into Casmaron, Vudra, and the Dragon Empires. His latest venture, the increasingly-popular "Naughty Nymph's Exploded Corn" ("Tastes Like a Nymph, if Nymphs Were Made of Corn!") has also won him some fame and wealth. He hopes to expand this venture with Flavored Exploded Corn, and different varieties of Exploded Corn (especially Kettle Exploded Corn, "Baked in the Lovin' Oven of a Nymph, if Nymphs Owned Ovens!").

Botu is at heart a merchant, and loves to give flowery and excessive names and stories to his possessions and abilities in the hopes of making them appear more exotic and valuable. His flasks of alchemist's fire are the “bottled breath of the Imperial Dragon,” his scrolls of mage armor are the “thousand names of the hundred emperors, whose souls protect their rightful heir,” and his katana is “crafted from the blessed bones of the earth by a dozen-score kami deep in the Forest of Spirits.” He'll happily admit to his close friends and allies that these titles and descriptions are inventions meant to help return the spark of wonder to the jaded citizens of the Inner Sea, but is more reluctant to admit the surcharge he adds to these relics from the East.
