I have been a GM for this twice, and I found that the best way to do it is just to add enough encounters that they get a feel for the dangers of Westcrown sewers. I got Janiven away from them as fast as possible because this is about the players, not the NPCs.

Honestly I did not find it that well written, and I think rolling randomly, while a fun gimmick, is to random for my taste. I used all the encounter sites and added an “optional” encounter where they saw a Otyugh guarding some sewer treasure. As the players, as written at least, have not done anything yet I find that too many encounters in the sewer just sucks out the fun. This is why I removed the random element.

If I were to run this again I would make sure that the goblins encountered had some form of visual relation to whitechin just to foreshadow him a bit.

Ahh this takes me back, tomorrow we will play the last part of the 6th book, so it has been more than a year since I GMed that part. Get ready for a fun ride because that is what CoT will give you.

By the way I did not draw a map and no one mind, because i explain that they travel quite a while between each "encounter". It's not a dungeon where each room has its own guardian, think of it more as traveling in the city with loads of random encounters because you are in a dangerous part of the city. You would never draw a tile map for the entire journey.

With regards to character deaths, I’m in the middle of book 5 of Council of thieves and so far I have a kill total of 14ish. They have reached level 9, but there is not a single character who have avoided a raise or a reincarnate (wow that spell is ridicules, for some reason I have only experienced character buffs from dying once they started using this spell). I never try to kill my players, but I rarely fight to keep them alive either unless it would be game disturbing to have players die. It is about 1 kill per session. During the first levels I had few deaths (first one being at level 3) but as they reached levels 7-8 casualties where at least 2 per session. The campaign has been 9 months, and now people have a quite casual relationship to casualties.

With regards to what number of casualties to aim for, you should try to get just enough that the players fear death. Too much and they expect it, and it loses impact, too little and they find themselves not challenged and not fearing enemies. Both are not, for me at least, the ideal game, so find the middle ground you feel comfortable with.

So i have GM'ed books 1-3 and am about to finish book 4. I have never been one to kill my players, but this time. DAMN

First kill, while performing the theatre someone was unable to make his heal check and ended up killing himself on stage.

In the Asmodian knot two players were killed by the king.

The day after the mayors party one of the players where publicly executed for crimes of a demonic nature.

During Delhaven a player was killed by the shadow triceratops, two by Bisby and finally one by the vampire cleric.

During the infernal syndrome we have a one killed by the lich shade, one by cerebri and that is it for now.

That is 10 by my count compared to my normal 1'ish I feel dirty and I know I will have more casualties before this book is over. I see the Ranger dyeing from a full attack form L-man and possibly the dragon disciple as well. Are all adventure paths this bloody ?

I do not get the problem. Darwinism, you state that a picture of an empowered woman such looking at a spell the same way as my girlfriend looks at our cat when it does something especially cute, is demeaning and refer to it as biting off her nipple. I must say that I think that type of sickness only exist in the eye of the beholder. If you want it to be dirty you can make it dirty in your mind just as Monty python showed with their Know what I mean? Joke.

I thought that including historical references where just pure rubbish, I do not want history I want fantasy. I want dragons killed by heroes, why do you care so much about the gender of the hero? Or if she was properly dressed while killing the dragon? Remember that it is a fantasy game made fun by not being “real”.

After having game mastered counsel of thieves i have gotten a lot of love for chelax and would like to try an original character.

I would like to make a paladin of Asmodeus. Now before i hear the drama outbreak i would like to justify why a paladin would be able to belief in the faith of Asmodeus.

As you all know, clerics need only be within one step of their deity, this means that clerics of Asmodeus can be LN LE NE.

Now imagine clerics of Asmodeus who are LN, they would focus their faith on law rather than evil. To them the key aspect of Asmodeus preaching are lawful in nature. They perceive other interpretations as loaded. They are bound to agree with the LE clerics on law aspects, but despise NE clerics as they misinterpret the will of Asmodeus by just performing evil acts, as this is not what they see Asmodeus as a patron of.

Any cleric is forced to pick two domains, being the main focus of their beliefs in a deity. So a cleric of Asmodeus can be LN who has Law and Fire. This interpretation could be that any who does not follow the law needs to be punished trough fire.

This small group of clerics of Asmodeus has then preached for a young boy, who grew to be a young man under these tales of righteous furry. This man is a firm believer of Asmodeus, but not as a cruel and tricky god, but as law and punishment. This man is also a good person, he wishes the best for his nabours, and his lessors.

For yes Asmodeus preaches that there is a difference between the quality of persons, and species. While normally this would be interpret to mean that you are free to exploit the stupid and the weak, he sees it as nature, that he is stronger and better than others. But unlike the usual understanding of this aspect of Asmodeus, he sees it as his duty to help the less fortunate, for they are clearly unable to do so them self. Slaves are clearly lesser beings, but as they are so, they are not able to withstand a hard life as he is, and therefore he treats them good. Sometimes even better then himself.

Being a man of Asmodeus tought from an early age that there are many who misinterpret the teachings of Asmodeus, he has a vendetta against those who befoul his name, and as such he intends to be a righteous inquisitor of the church of Asmodeus.

Having formed his own understanding of Asmodeus based on the teachings of a LN understanding of the texts he does not understand the true nature of Asmodeus.

He does however when confronted by examples of Asmodeus exploitation of an unfair deal which leaves men as poor thralls, he argues that Asmodeus is truly beyond us all, and that to imitate his acts would be to perceive oneself as Asmodeus equal for only he has the necessary understanding of all things to act as such. This form of blasphemy should be punished with flame.

So what do you think. Is this a viable background for a paladin of Asmodius. There are no rules against it, especially as clarified in council of thieves: mother of flies article of Asmodeus worshipping paladins. They also mention that the only paladins of Asmodeus who does not fall are those who die young.

Is this a concept character i should continue to build on, or do you think it is a bad idea?

Dark Archive

I'm wondering if you can make that build, based on page 52 under feats where it states that

"animal companions can select other feats, although they are unable to utilize some feats (such as Martial Weapon Proficiency)."

I'm not sure how to interpret this, but i would assume that as there are no rules specifying that apes can use martial weapon proficiency, therefore we must refer to the vague rule stating that animal companions are unable to utilize some feats, this being one of them.

You can take the feat but you cannot get its benefits. This must either mean that animal companions with weapon proficiency are unable to act as if proficient while using a weapon they have the proficiency to, or that they are unable to use the weapon itself.

What do you think?

This is naturally RAW not fluff I'm referring to
