Special Abilities

AC Bonus (EX): When unarmored and unencumbered, the monk adds his Wisdom bonus (if any) to his AC and his CMD. In addition, a monk gains a +1 bonus to AC and CMD at 4th level. This bonus increases by 1 for every four monk levels thereafter, up to a maximum of +5 at 20th level.

These bonuses to AC apply even against touch attacks or when the monk is flat-footed. He loses these bonuses when he is immobilized or helpless, when he wears any armor, when he carries a shield, or when he carries a medium or heavy load.

Flurry of Blows (EX): Starting at 1st level, a monk can make a flurry of blows as a full-attack action.

When doing so, he may make one additional attack, taking a –2 penalty on all of his attack rolls, as if using the Two-Weapon Fighting feat. These attacks can be any combination of unarmed strikes and attacks with a monk special weapon (he does not need to use two weapons to utilize this ability).

For the purpose of these attacks, the monk's base attack bonus from his monk class levels is equal to his monk level. For all other purposes, such as qualifying for a feat or a prestige class, the monk uses his normal base attack bonus.

At 8th level, the monk can make two additional attacks when he uses flurry of blows, as if using Improved Two-Weapon Fighting (even if the monk does not meet the prerequisites for the feat).

At 15th level, the monk can make three additional attacks using flurry of blows, as if using Greater Two-Weapon Fighting (even if the monk does not meet the prerequisites for the feat).

A monk applies his full Strength bonus to his damage rolls for all successful attacks made with flurry of blows, whether the attacks are made with an off-hand or with a weapon wielded in both hands. A monk may substitute disarm, sunder, and trip combat maneuvers for unarmed attacks as part of a flurry of blows. A monk cannot use any weapon other than an unarmed strike or a special monk weapon as part of a flurry of blows. A monk with natural weapons cannot use such weapons as part of a flurry of blows, nor can he make natural attacks in addition to his flurry of blows attacks.

Starting at 1st level, a monk of the empty hand can make a flurry of blows using any combination of unarmed strikes or attacks with an improvised weapon. He may not make a flurry of blows with any other weapons, including special monk weapons. This ability modifies Flurry of Blows.

Unarmed Strike: At 1st level, a monk gains Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat. A monk's attacks may be with fist, elbows, knees, and feet. This means that a monk may make unarmed strikes with his hands full. There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for a monk striking unarmed. A monk may thus apply his full Strength bonus on damage rolls for all his unarmed strikes.

Usually a monk's unarmed strikes deal lethal damage, but he can choose to deal nonlethal damage instead with no penalty on his attack roll. He has the same choice to deal lethal or nonlethal damage while grappling.

A monk's unarmed strike is treated as both a manufactured weapon and a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that enhance or improve either manufactured weapons or natural weapons.

A monk also deals more damage with his unarmed strikes than a normal person would, as shown above on Table: Monk. The unarmed damage values listed on Table: Monk are for Medium monks. A Small monk deals less damage than the amount given there with his unarmed attacks, while a Large monk deals more damage; see Table: Small or Large Monk Unarmed Damage.

VMC Cavalier Lvl 1 Edict: An order of the tome cavalier must protect written knowledge (or at least approved knowledge) at all costs. Some are also devoted to the destruction of proscribed knowledge and are equally zealous in the pursuit of its destruction. Most of these cavaliers believe that the preservation of a written work is more important than a single life, even their own, as it ensures future generations benefit from its wisdom.

History:

In Old Kintargo, in the Villegre there exists a small book store. Reddington and Son Books. The owner is Baelir Reddington, the village drunk. His bookstore is open to the public from 8am-5pm, when he closes up shop for the day, he cleans up, then heads to the bar. A seemingly boring man by any means. At least by day.

You see, Baelir is in fact an information smuggler, specifically a book smuggler. Any books on Kintargo's history, even ones containing heretical texts, are hard to come by. Baelir is one of the people in the supply chain, where he picks up books at various drop off points, and stores them in a small sub basement library. He hasn't sold any forbidden books in a while, so unfortunately his spare shelves are getting a little full.

This might make you think that Baelir is a weak man, unfortunately he is a bit of a mountain. Over six feet in height, Baelir is rather imposing, he has broad shoulders, quick feet, and to a very select few very hard fists. When he inherited his father's bookstore he found a book on old Irorian physical training and combat. He read it, and kept rereading it, setting up a small gym in his basement. Unfortunately weapons were beyond his coin pouch, so he had to improvise. He became so accustomed to utilizing his home gym equipment and various other random furnishings, that real weapons now feel very clumsy in his hands. He spends an hour every morning meditating and training in his little home gym before opening shop.

His father worked for the Order of the Archivists, unfortunately he never told Baelir. He did leave a note with the Damarian family noting how he was going to be gone and was leaving him the bookstore when he would be of age. The church of Abadar was continuously paid for the rent until he could actually run the store on his own.

Currently, Baelir is attending the protest in order to meet a contact. The teenage son of the Damarian family, Rutilus Damarian, has gone missing. A friend of a friend slipped him a note through his bartender friend letting Baelir know that he had information on the whereabouts of the young Damarian.

Personality:

Baelir has a soft spot for people who has helped him before. The Damarian family is a key example. He holds his edict close to his heart, but is willing to break it for close friends. He is somewhat droll but if he catches word of the subjects he likes to study, he lights up with a boyish grin.

Description:

Around six feet tall, Baelir wears simple clothes consisting of a long coat, blue shirt, brown pants, with a leather belt, and leather shoes. The shoes have an iron buckle.
He has red shaggy hair with a short beard. His eyes are brown, although in the right light appear hazel. He keeps his beard trimmed to a certain length, but typically just lets it grow out. His face is long with a strong square jaw.
His build is very broad shouldered with long arms with toned muscles. He claims it is from moving his books every day, but he knows otherwise.

10 Minute background:

1: a-bookstore owner.
b-smuggles books
c-needs direction
d-A smarton if you will
e-looks like a village drunk

2: goal a: Restore the Sacred Order of the Archivists
b: save and preserve knowledge

3: secret that he knows: His house has an entry to a section of the sewers that never connects to anything, he has spent years filling it with shelf after shelf for books containing forbidden knowledge.
secret that he does not know: Baelir is related by blood to the founder of the Sacred Order of the Archivists.

4: Person 1 (Friendly): Bartender at a tavern in Old Kintargo (not the Tooth and Nail unless the owner is pro rebellion). Whenever Baelir goes there he orders the usual, which is two mugs of ale (they are in fact water), he drinks them then leaves, if there is a third he drinks that, wanders to the back alley, picks up a slip of paper containing a drop off point for a book, then grabs that in the night. Unfortunately the new martial law is putting a damper on his illicit activities.

Person 2: (Hostile) An ex. Baelir had a flame with an Elven woman named Selena Clearwater. She is an instructor at the Alabaster Academy, and their relationship ended when Baelir missed a date when he went to smuggle a book very quickly. She thinks he's a drunk and does nothing with his life other than run his small library making very little coin, but if only she knew what lay behind the secret doors of his library/home.

Person 3 (Friendly): The Damarian Family. A family of tieflings in the Devil's Nursery usually have a fresh pie for Baelir, especially when they have word of something to smuggle. He grew up with them, they practically raised him since his father was out so much. He spreads a little of the ill gotten coins he gets from his smuggling to this family so that they can both help him, and keep giving him pies. They knew Baelir's father, and knew that he was a member of the Order of the Archivists. They haven't told Baelir because they assume that he knows.

5: Memory 1: Baelir doesn't remember too much about his father, all he remembers is the day that he got a letter saying he wasn't coming back, and that he was paying the priests of Abadar to keep the library until he was of age to run it himself.

Memory 2: A moonlit stroll through the university park with his now ex lover Selena. It was a night of discussing whatever crossed their minds, not history or politics, just swapping stories. She'd been alive for over 200 years so she had more stories to tell, and he was eager to listen. It was then that he decided to marry her, unfortunately he was never able to.

Memory 3: His first smuggling run. All he had to do was pick up a few books from inside a barrel at the Old docks. It was an old book on Aroden's teachings. He forgot to bring a coat that night, and the guards spotted him in the distance carrying something, they demanded he show them. He was far enough away that they couldn't make out who he was, so he ditched the book in the water and ducked down the alleys. He never got caught, but he will never get that book again.
