Background: Avery is an accomplished underachiever. It's not that he's lazy or doesn't apply himself, it's just that he's never really had to. His father Victor is a physician and medical researcher who was closely involved in the development of a vaccine for cholera. This led to a rapid ascent in both rank and income within a pharmaceutical corporation that left him and his wife among the growing segment of American nouveau riche. It was always assumed that Avery would follow in his father's footsteps, but Avery's interests prioritized fast cars and pretty women over scholarly pursuits. This didn't impede his acceptance into the University of Chicago, thanks to his family name (which was printed on generous contribution checks just before the application cycle).

Avery is intelligent enough, and might be brilliant if he cared enough to apply himself to his studies, but often performs only the bare minimum. This has been a constant source of contention within his family. Perhaps to add insult to injury, Avery decided not to pursue medicine. Instead, he turned to archaeology, or the "science of history" as he sometimes calls it. He was accepted, mediocre marks and all, into the graduate program, and placed as a research assistant to Dr. Meyers. Consequently, the flow of money from his parents stopped, and he has been reduced to paltry distributions from a family trust that, by its terms, will pay out its balance to him "upon graduation from an accredited American school of medicine".

Appearance: Avery is quite handsome--tall and broad, with coal-dark hair and eyes and a winning, toothy smile that he knows how to throw in a lop-sided manner that has charmed many a girl. He tends to dress very well, though his recent reduction in income is evidenced by scuffed shoes and last-season's suit jackets. His personal grooming is impeccable, and his hair is always neatly greased into place with a generous application of pomade.
