As a young lad, Avalon came from a fairly well to do family of blacksmiths and weaponsmiths. Being a fairly rebellious, if good natured, lad, Avalon was sent to a local rectory run by the church of Torag, where he could be disciplined and maybe even trained in the ways of the paladin. It soon turned out that young Avalon, although displaying an innate strength of body that any paladin would be proud of, lacked both the focus and the strength of character needed to become a holy warrior. With the words of his tutor ringing in his ears, Avalon was sent home in disgrace. "A good boy you might be, but the destiny of a Champion will never be yours..."
As he was being dragged home by his massively angry father, growling about his useless ox of a son, his father spotted a man doing weapon drills on one of the unused piers by the wharves. Within minutes, the man had the boy take several swings with the largest, most ungainly sword he had. It only took a short time and the promise of heavily discounted sevice at his father's smithy for the man to take up the offer to give the boy at least some training in what weapons he knew how to use in the hopes of his being useful enough, as his father hoped, to maybe even join the town guard one day.
Several years later saw the boy now nearly a man, working hard under the watchful eye of Tam Althor, an undeservedly disreputable warrior from the eastern edge of the Fenwall Mountains. Tam was not a particularly spectacular weapons master, although his specialization with the spiked chain and several of the dirtier tricks which allowed him to defeat his foes by sending them skidding down a mountainside fasinated Avalon.
It was several weeks ago when Avalon was headed to the home of Tam for his afternoon training session when he found Tam being led the other way in chains and protesting his innocence. Over the next several harrowing weeks as Tam was jailed for murder, Avalon's investigations turned up more questsions than answers until the day when he asked the fisherman who was the star witness.
After almost an hour of some of the hardest talking and bluffing he had ever had to do, Avalon go the full story of how the fisherman was threatened and bribed by a man working for someone called Gaedren to break into Tam's home to smear pigs blood on one of his weapons and then hide it, and then to provide false witness at his trial shortly after.
When Avalon returned with a town guardsman to have the fisherman repeat his story, they found the fisherman dead in his boat with a single crossbow bolt through his heart.
With his mentor in jail and the only other man who knows that he is truely innocent dead, Avalon sets out to find a way to free him.
