Other Abilities
Bypass (+2): You are skilled at getting inside computer systems and electronic devices. At 1st level, you gain a +1 insight bonus to Computers and Engineering skill checks. At 5th level, every 4 levels thereafter, and at 20th level, this bonus increases by 1. Calculate Angles: As a reaction when you hit an enemy with a ranged weapon that targets KAC, you can attempt to ricochet the projectile to ward a second target within half the weapon’s range or range increment of the first target. Make a ranged attack at –6 against the second target and deal normal damage if the attack hits. You must have line of effect and line of sight from both you to the second target, and from the first target to the second. You can’t use this ability again until you spend 1 Resolve Point to recover Stamina Points after a 10-minute rest. Custom Rig: You always count as having the appropriate tool or basic kit for any Computers or Engineering skill check you attempt. Combat Tracking (Move Action): Treat Mechanic level + 1 as BAB. Electromagnetic Deflection: When you activate your energy shield, choose two of the following damage types: cold, electricity, or fire. While your shield is active, you gain resistance to the chosen damage types equal to half your mechanic level. You must have the energy shield mechanic trick to learn this trick. Energy Shield As a standard action, you can use your custom rig to activate an energy shield around yourself. This shield provides you with a number of temporary Hit Points equal to your Intelligence modifier plus your mechanic level. The shield remains active for 1 minute per mechanic level or until all of its temporary Hit Points are depleted, whichever comes first. Once used, you cannot use this ability again until you spend 1 Resolve Point to regain Stamina Points after a 10-minute rest; your shield automatically shuts off during this period of rest. Expert Rig: Your custom rig has improved. Whenever you use your custom rig to successfully hack into a computer, you can also disable one countermeasure installed in the system (except firewalls). In addition, your custom rig can now be used as any engineering or hacking specialty kit of item level 6th or lower, and it has the features of a computer with a tier equal to half your level with the artificial personality, hardened, or security I upgrade module. It also has an audio/video recorder. You can add extra modules or countermeasures to your custom rig at the normal prices. You can also use your custom rig to communicate over an encrypted channel with your ship, allowing you to access your ship’s downloaded data sets and transponder (see page 430) at a range of 5 miles. If you have a drone, you can issue commands to or directly control your drone at the same range. High Speed Reload: Each day, you can modify one of your weapons so that it can be more easily reloaded that day. As a reaction when this weapon runs out of ammunition or charges, you can automatically reload it to full capacity. This trick requires you to have the ammunition or spare battery on your person. Memory Module: Once per day, as a reaction while not in combat, you can reroll a failed skill check to recall knowledge. In addition, your exocortex grants you the Skill Focus (Engineering) feat as a bonus feat. You can’t use your exocortex’s memory module while combat tracking is activated. Every time you gain a mechanic level, you can rebuild your exocortex’s memory module, replacing the exocortex’s bonus Skill Focus feat with Skill Focus in a different skill. Miracle Worker: As a move action, you can repair damage to a starship’s systems or modify a suit of armor or weapon to function more efficiently. To use this ability, you must be able to handle the item affected without impediment. You can use this ability once per day at 7th level, plus one additional time per day for every 4 mechanic levels you have beyond 7th. The exact effect of this ability depends on the object or system you are modifying.
Overload: As a standard action, you can cause a short in an electronic device, including most ranged energy weapons, melee weapons with the powered special property, or a single armor upgrade. This makes the device nonfunctional for 1 round. Overload doesn’t cause a locked door, safe, or other device to open, but it prevents anyone from opening it for 1 round. You must be adjacent to the device to use this ability. If you have a drone, you can instead use this ability on an electronic device adjacent to your drone. If you have an exocortex with the wireless hack ability, you can instead use this ability on any electronic device within range of your exocortex’s wireless hack. If you use overload on an item or armor upgrade in someone’s possession, the owner can attempt a Reflex saving throw to negate the effect (DC = 10 + half your mechanic level + your Intelligence modifier). Overload doesn’t affect androids, cybernetics, drones, powered armor, robots, or creatures with the technological subtype (all of which have shielding against this sort of attack), or items larger than Medium. Once a device has been successfully overloaded, a residual static charge prevents that device from being overloaded again for 1 minute. Remote Hack (DC 26): You can use your custom rig to attempt Computers and Engineering skill checks at a range of 20 feet. At 7th level and every 2 levels thereafter, this range increases by 10 feet. A target of this ability (or a creature attending or observing your target) can attempt a Perception or Sense Motive check (DC = 10 + 1-1/2 × your mechanic level + your Intelligence modifier) to determine that you are the origin of this activity. Steady Shot: You gain Stealth as a class skill. When you make an aimed shot, you can reroll any damage dice with a result of 1 and use the second result instead. Theme Knowledge (Xenoarcheologist) : You have trained yourself to have few presuppositions about the foreign devices you uncover. Reduce the DC to identify rare, ancient, or alien tech by 5. Engineering is a class skill for you, though if it is a class skill from the class you take at 1st level, you instead gain a +1 bonus to Engineering checks. In addition, you gain an ability adjustment of +1 to Intelligence at character creation. Trap Spotter (Theme): You often encounter ancient, exotic traps and security devices, varying from mechanical defenses to magical wards. You have honed your senses to pick out warning signs of traps of any kind. When you come within 10 feet of a trap, you can immediately attempt a Perception check to notice the trap, which should be rolled in secret by the GM. Wireless Hack: On any round you don’t use combat tracking, your exocortex can access another computer system within 20 feet, allowing it to attempt a Computers check against that computer each round, using your skill bonus. This counts as a standard action for the purpose of the Computers skill. You must remain within 20 feet of the computer system for the entire time your exocortex is interacting with the computer. If the task requires multiple actions (or even rounds) to accomplish, you can spend your actions to work in concert with your exocortex, counting both your action and the exocortex’s effective standard action toward the total time required. If you don’t have the remote hack class feature, you must be adjacent to the computer to attempt your checks --------------------
Rough Backstory:
Runt. If there was a single word used to describe Amhesha's childhood, it would be the runt of a litter. Ever since birth, Amhesha has been a fair bit smaller than everyone around her her age. And when her fur came in, things only got much, much more unstable and chaotic in her life. When a kit's fur grows in, mystics usually divine the kit's destiny via the pattern of spots and stripes on the child. All throughout Amhesha's fur were odd patches of discoloured fur that shouldn't be there, cutting off spots in their track. The "lines" of destiny, so to speak, did not even exist for her, they were all constantly stopping and starting and disappearing. So, in their infinite wisdom, the mystic decided that the child's destiny had nothing to do with Pulonis, and that she would need to be sent off world as soon as she could fend for herself. So, instead of a typical coming-of-age ceremony at 15, she was unceremoniously shunted off to whatever visiting party would even have her. Granted, the kid got a multiple-choice selection of where to go, so as to not be forced anywhere against her destiny, but nonetheless she was still tossed off her home to experience the world. The church that took her in was an odd one: the church of Ydajisk. The church was a small one, but operated a few starships seeking out dead or dying languages to chronicle. She served as an apprentice to the lead engineer while she was there, as well as part of the minimal security force on the ship, sniping the occassional force that would try to off the remaining survivor of languages from a distance when necessary. When she turned 20, she finally decided to head out on her own, attending a University in Nearspace studying Drift Engine Engineering and Linguistics, while making money as a prolific translator given her experience on the Ydajisk ship, After she graduated undergraduate, she finally decided to head to Graduate School for Engineering to earn a living as a lead engineer. When the opportunity opened up to explore an ancient city in a sun with untranslated texts in a unique encoding? She would pounce on that chance as fast as is possible for her weak frame to do!
Personality and Appearance:
As stated in the previous section, Amhesha is short for a Pahtra (about 5'), with her teenage years, they years of the most growth, being split between a few years on the low-gravity Pulonis and the standard-gravity Ydajiskan ship. She has deformed fur patterns all over her body, with incomplete spots and broken stripes scattered all over her brown fur. It most closely resembles the fur patternings of a lynx, but with splotches of uncolored white fur ruining any semblance of a normal pattern on her fur. She always wears an obvious holy symbol of Ydajisk on her person at all time, acknowledging the role the church played in her day-to-day life growing up. Everything she has even related to linguistics is marked with the holy symbol as well, from her pocket linguist to the books on multiple languages, kept in different media for novelty, stamped with the open maw with poetry in between. Personality-wise, she's obsessed with knowledge and will go to almost any length to obtain it, with the closer it is to engineering and linguistics, the more drastic of a measure she's willing to go to. Outside of her thirst for knowledge, she can best be described as eccentric and unfocused, flitting from one topic to another in a chaotic frenzy when provoked. She takes great pride in this, likening it to the behaviour of the proteans of the Maelstrom, but without the constant need to advance the forces of Entropy. That happens without one's input, so an eternal war isn't necessarily needed for that! Oddly enough for a Pahtra, she doesn't have much interest in music that doesn't have any kind of innovative lyrics, but she keeps that well to herself, especially when around others of her race.
