I am running an Int focused Elf Hexcrafter Magus in my GM's current campaign and loving it. Some builds scream cheese, but most classes have that.

I am playing a Fetchling fighter archer in a Reign of Winter campaign. Honestly I am no better at low levels than our party Dwarf or Gnome. Our Aasimar oracle is even worse (she will dominate soon though. About the only benefit I currently have is hiding in the shadows, which doesn't always help. ;-)

Our GM also uses the wishlist as mentioned above, as well as dropping items that we want/will use vs. generic loot.

Archer finds a +X Composite Longbow
Barbarian finds a +X Bastard Sword
Fighter finds a +X (insert weapon of choice)
etc...

Personally I love the idea of weapons with a compelling backstory that I can add to. Just as long as I can reasonably upgrade the weapon to stay competitive.

In the last campaign I played, nobody in a party of 5 had any of the "big 6" magic items. Instead we all had items that we found/won that played to our specific character concept. Did this require extra work for our GM? Yes. Did we appreciate those items more? Absolutely.

My primary gaming group still uses the roll 4d6 drop the lowest. However we then pool our rolled stats to the GM and the entire group choses one array to use. This group likes doing this because even campaigns that we have run before can be vastly different due to the variety of stat arrays that can happen when rolling. The other group that I game with goes by a strict 20 or 25 point buy depending on the campaign. This group prefers the even balance that point buys can provide.

It should be noted that my primary group does only homebrew campaigns while my secondary group only plays AP and other "official" campaigns.

Great suggestions overall. :-)

I admit I only glanced over some of the replies, but has anyone considered possibly allowing gestalt builds?

Doesn't having a higher Int also give you bonus spell slots for a Magus?

Personally for a Magus build I have planned for an upcoming homebrew campaign (playing to lvl 20) I am going with a very high Int. Partially for RP/backstory reasons, but also extra skills (2 + Int modifier) and higher spell DCs. Granted I am not min/maxing or even being fully optimized. Others may think this is silly. To each there own though! =)

First off thatnk you for the replies! Sorry about the delay in my response. Work has been kicking my butt.

Anyway here is what I found out about the rest of the party:

Assimar Oracle (Flame mystery, Clouded Vision curse)
Gnome Alcamist (loves his bombs and is extremely...eclectic)
Dwarf Barbarian (pretty vanilla build that focuses on rage damage, but does have a few unique dwarf RP hooks)

I will run the ideas suggested past my GM tonight and hopefully be able to join tomorrow's game! Thank you again! =)

I need the assistance of those who have played/GM'ed, or are playing/GM'ing the Reign of Winter AP.

I have been invited by my GM to join a current party that just lost a player due to real life conflicting with gaming. This person may or may not be returning later, but it is best to assume they will not rejoin this campaign. The current party consists of a barbarian, an alchemist, and an oracle. They are at level 3 with a fast xp track. I do not know more yet, but will later today.

My GM suggested a true ranged character, possibly an archery based Ranger, since they are lacking that ability right now; and I have used a Ranger filling most Rogue roles before so I could also help fill that gap in too. With that being said I can choose other classes and fighting styles if I wish. He is pretty good about modifying campaigns to fit the party composition.

For classes I am currently considering a Ranger (switch-hitter or archery/mounted archery), Druid (unknown type), or Magus (hexcrafter). Of those three I have only ever played as a Ranger before. I am also open to multi-classing or dipping if this AP does not take us out to level 20 where I could use capstone abilities. (This is my first true AP. I normally play homebrews or highly modified APs so I don't honestly know at what level an unmodified AP will end at using the fast xp track.)

So for my most immediate questions...

1) Class/Classes
What class or multi-class/dip do you suggest for an intermediate experienced player with good search skills? (I.e. I know how to find stuff online and answer most questions myself.)

2) Race
What race do you suggest for the above class/classes and why? (Most races are available to use)

Based off of the answers to the above 2 questions I can get a good start on a character concept and build progression. Which I will post when it is ready.

The house rules:

All officail printed Paizo material is available for use (and possibly Paizo blogs) I just have to be able to find it (book or online) if the GM is unfamiliar with the item/skill/feat/etc.
No, I repeate NO, 3.5 or 3rd party material is allowed.
Crafting mundane items, basic weapons, and armor is okay.
Crafting (most) magical and (all) wondrous items are not allowed.
Any race is approved, but "over-powered" races are discouraged and need GM approval. (There goes my Strix build! Ha ha! Maybe next time...)
No mounted Halflings. (GM had a bad gaming experience with a pesky wolf rider.)
No summoners.
No leadership feat.
No prestige classes, but class archetypes, alternate class options, and alternate racial traits/ racial subtypes are fine.
No stat dumping, so please no 7 cha chracter suggestions! We are given a VERY generous point array for our stats...
3 traits allowed if one of them is a RoW campaign trait.
All pre-game purchased magical/wondrous gear needs to be GM approved to preserve current party balance. He doesn't want unfair advantage given to a new party memeber.

I know there is more that I am forgetting, but this is at least a start! Haha

Just searched for Emerald Caltrops on Google. This was the first link:

Looks to be a D&D item and not Pathfinder. If you/your GM are okay with that then go ahead and get some!
