About Alexei Robertovich

"What is the glory of civilization? It is the transformation of base materials into something more. The sands of the earth become windows to the heavens. Savage beasts become noble companions. Starving tribes become prosperous nations.

Is this easy? Ask the smith whose sweat turns rocks to blades! Ask the magistrate whose wisdom turns feud to peace! No, it is not easy! It is worthy.

That is the task we face. To create something worthy. Worthy of the rich land that lies fallow. Worthy of the efforts made before. Worthy of our heritage, for we are not descended from fearful men."

Three gods dominate the land of Brevoy. Death and War are two. The third is trade. The third is peace. The third is prosperity. Alexei believes this wholeheartedly. Life is hard in lands of the Conqueror, made harder by the senseless squabbling of nobles more concerned with being on top of the heap than that it being made of dung.

To the south lies a land that should be the envy of the entire region. Instead it is shunned. What should be a beacon of civilization is left to bandits, monsters, and the monuments of past failure.

When news of the charter reached the Bank in Restov, Alexei knew that he had to be a part of it. As he presented it to the Archbanker, it would not do to let another attempt at civilizing the area fail, as it undoubtedly would without the church's help. Such failures are a disgrace to the priesthood in Brevoy. A source of ridicule by the larger banks of the Inner Sea. Furthermore, if the expedition did surpass all expectations and succeed, the last thing Brevoy needs is another warlord rising to power with a bloody sword. No, the church must be involved. Of course it can't invest too heavily in such a venture. The chance of return is low and committing sufficient resources could be politically unwise. No, best to send a single banker. Low ranking but fully empowered to be an invested, but hardly controlling, partner from the beginning. So glad you agree. Yes, yes. Very wise indeed.

Alexei isn't terribly remarkable at a glance. He is good looking, but not extraordinarily so. He isn't feeble or mighty, neither clumsy nor graceful. His looks are the mix of ethnicities that characterize Brevoy, without favoring any of them.

It isn't until he starts speaking that most begin to remember the young banker. There's passion in his conversation, an energy when he gestures, a hint of ecstasy when discussing his god. In short, Alexei is a paladin. A paladin who from bowels to brains believes that taxes, roads, and good plumbing will save the world, and he's going to prove it.
