What are they holding back?

Smiling at Oleg, "Knowing bandits, 'bastards' is probably correct all around. This 'Stag Lord' wouldn't be the first byblow cast off by a lord to seek power and recognition whatever way he could. If that is his history." Tilting his head thoughtfully, "Though he is perhaps unusually arrogant and foolish. To take a name like that as a bandit in lands where Old Deadeye holds sway... there will be a reckoning for certain."

Looking at the rest of the party before focusing on Svetlana, "And that reckoning may be soon indeed if you are right about their schedule. In fact, perhaps one of us should keep watch while the rest eat." Alexei makes to stand and unless someone says or motions to the contrary, he moves to the watcher tower they first spotted Oleg in.

Yes, we have a charter.

Alexei attempts to chat amiably with their escort, as much as the seemingly taciturn soldiers will allow, for the morning they have them, falling back towards the rear once they are one their own. He does make an effort to speak with those nearby, but does not force the issue.

Alexei follows the others into the fort, pleased at the way Elvara is able to smooth over the mercenary's roughness. Stowing weapons and armor, he keeps the gambeson on to ward off the evening's gathering chill. Joining the others at the tables, Alexei brings the charter's case, but keeps it shut until the meal is finished. Business will simply have to wait it seems.

"Thank you Mistress Svetlana. As Raven nodding to the red-headed woman said, such a meal is welcome. Especially when it may a while before we have another.

Sitting patiently, Alexei waits until host and hostess for the host and hostess indicate it's time. As everyone settles in, Alexei addresses Svetlana, "If not business then pleasure. What brought you and your husband here?"

Responding to the Knight Captain's offer, "We thank you for allowing us to accompany you. While not an replacement for proper patrols and garrisons, perhaps we can help share some of the burden. Now, what can you tell me about Oleg and his post..." Alexei continues to speak with Garrek as beautiful woman approaches and occupies the others' attention. Diplomacy check on the captain to see if I loosen him up a bit and share something useful.

The clerk watches as Raven takes the lead once again, mentally shrugging. At least she seems to treat everyone much the same, like her Lord in Iron.

With Raven departing and Vasilyan not seeming in a chatty mood, Alexei steps forward with a smile, leading his animals. "Pleasure to meet you, Elvara Rivers? I am Alexei. Healer, scribe, and now, gesturing to his burdened mules packmaster and cartographer."

Nodding to Vasilyan, Indeed we are that 'group'. We were to meet our last member here, which I believe is you and your... familiar? This last is directed to the snake. No natural creature, not in Calistril when the snow still flies.

Adding on to Elvara's question, Alexei turns to Vasilyan and twiches his reins, "I was going to stable mine if that's where you're headed. I wouldn't mind you giving them a once over myself, but if you are busy I can assist her?" Alexei leaves either choice open so the older man can take his comfort.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 Alexei tries to get a sense of the newcomer and if Vasilyan is being more standoffish than usual.

Mules tied in a short train to his mount, Alexei spends the journey to the fort becoming acquainted with the particulars of mules and horses. Though not totally unfamiliar, they are certainly not something he worked with everyday.

At the officer's challenge, Alexei moves forward to display the charter. Knight Captain Garrek? I am Alexei. As the charter states we have been commissioned to map out the Greenbelt and deal with the bandits operating from there. We were to meet another member of the charter here. Do you know if he has arrived yet?

Bargewight Inn

Alexei takes possession of the note and charter after the others are finished examining it. "It seems that our authority will be tested from the very beginning. I'm not familiar with the trading post, are any of you?" He looks particularly at Raven and Vasilyan, who seem the most likely to have traveled passed there. His face hardens as he looks at the charter again. "Whatever else, I mean to put the last clause to good use."

The grimness vanishes as quickly as it appeared, dissipated by a wry smile. "But that is getting ahead of ourselves. I will report to the bank, and then invest the reward in some more useful assets, particularly a few pack mules and supplies to round out those we've been provided. If you wish, I would be glad to take care of similar purchases anyone intends to make. We might be able to get a better price that way, or at least prevent needless duplication."

After arrangements as the inn are taken care of, Alexei heads to the bank. First to tithe his payment for the assignment. Second to ensure everything is in order for his departure and start making arrangements for supplies.

Will attempt to use Bank connections and Diplomacy/Appraise/Sense-Motive to get a better than default deal on goods.

If no one else has matters to discus with the High Priestess, Alexei looks to the others. "Is there anything that needs to be done before meeting with out Solicitor? If not, I suggest we finish this and discuss the rest of the business."

Outside

Nodding to Vorsirion's brief explanation. That is the gist of it. Though there are several troubling things that deserve further scrutiny from your church.

Alexei gives the priestess a brief description of the party's exploration leading up to the confrontation with Tripe, which he describes in exacting detail along with the substance in the pool. Although he does not mention the priest's name. Whatever and however it happened, your brother was infused with, if not possessed by, that substance. While it seems to have become quiescent, I would strongly recommend dealing with it immediately and with prejudice. The opening the children used to enter the crypts also ought to be sealed and a thorough examination conducted to ensure that there are no other breaches or weak points.

If Valanthe has any questions about specifics, Alexei tries to answer them in a concise and complete manner, while avoiding any mention of the conversation with Delana.

After the questions are over, Alexei offers Valanthe Tripe's holy symbol. While its last bearer did not remain worthy of it, I thought you might wish it returned. If not, the Bank will find a use for it.

Alexei would like to keep one of the breatplates from the skeletons. Unless the priestess objects.

As a last detail of to taken care of, Alexei addresses the issue of payment. I believe the final issue to be taken care of is payment for services. Will this be handled by youself or by the third party?

Male LG Human (“Brevic”) Cleric (Abadar) 1 | HP: 10/10 | AC: 19 (11 Tch, 18 Fl) | CMB: +1, CMD: 12 | F: +4, R: +1, W: +4 | Init: +5 | Perc: +7, SM: +2 | Speed 30ft (40ft unarmored) | Spells: 1st 2+1/2+1 | Active conditions: None. Channel: 5/5 1d6 DC 12

At the pool

As the elf necromancer(?) has nothing else to add, Alexei nods to Raven. "That is probably wise." He makes no further attempt to investigate substance.

At the woman

Nodding to her statement. "It is nature of death to be absolute. It is the nature of civilization to be flexible. If you are thinking of heading south, you might even consider joining us. Business will take us there soon enough."

Alexei raises his eyebrows at the passion in her words to Vorsirion. Waiting for the elf's response, Alexei speaks up once again. "I would not object to telling your fellow priests you have perished, as it is certainly true. And your desire to... live is understandable. However, it would put my mind at ease if you were to swear an oath before the Judge to the effect that you intend harm to none, particularly the priesthood you wish to leave behind."

Shrugging a bit uncomfortably, "Aiding a undead priestess of the Lady of Graves escape from her diety's shrine while concealing that fact from the same priesthood that employees him leaves even a worldly banker on somewhat unsteady ground. Knowing we are helping a unfortunate victim rather than a vengeful reverent would firm things up considerably."

I'd like to cast Abadar's Truthtelling on her and get her to confirm what she has already told us and, as said, that she isn't out for blood, brains, or various other bodily parts and/or secretions. Or suddenly harbors a death and abiding hatred for the living. That would be bad.

With the woman

As the woman speaks, Alexei relaxes his grip, slightly. "Whatever power he used to raise you was overwhelming him as well." Alexei describes the fight with Tripe and the pool. "I imagine your colleagues will be able to deal with problem when we make them aware of it, but anything you could add to our understanding would be appreciated. I have never heard of such a thing before."

Thinking about possible decisions, Alexei's face grows pensive. "I am afraid we cannot undo what was done to you. My thought is for you to accompany us back to the cathedral so that you and your order can decide on the best course to ensure this tragedy does not keep you separate from your goddess."

"Also... and I mean no ill will by this, only courtesy. We may directly free you from your current state and send you to meet the Lady presently. Of course, that is only to present an alternative. Considering the unusual circumstances involved and the unhallowed state of where we are, I would recommend a different location."

Scratching his chin with the shield's edge, Alexei's gaze grows a bit vague. "There are certainly other paths open to you as well, though finding them might take a certain amount of time and consideration. Not being among the living could surely be an advantage when hunting the undead. Surely Pharasma, or perhaps even another deity, would find a role suited to you."

"What are your thoughts High Priestess?"

At the well. Scene 1

Once Vorsirion finishes his examination, Alexei nods encouragingly. "What can you tell us?"

At the well. Scene 2

Lowering the shield slightly, Alexei turns to the group. "Well, it did seem to react to positive energy, if not violently or dramatically. A negative energy infused substance perhaps? A well of undeath to strengthen the... undead?" Alexei pauses at the awkward phrasing. It seems apt though.

Focusing on Vorsirion, "Could this be useful to you? While I do not want to offend our employers or the Lady of this house, it may be worth our while to take some before they remove it. Do you need special tools and would there be any danger?"

At the strange woman.

Alexei's grip on the key tightens, and he reaches within and out to the energy that is part of his calling. Sentient! Unbalanced scales! The thinking dead are all supposed to be terribly dangerous. What is she? Wight? Vampire?

To the... woman, Alexei attempts to smile confidently. "We haven't even tried, so don't give up just yet. And I wouldn't count the Mother of Souls out either. She waits for all of us, and the invitation never expires, as even gods have learned.

So please, tell us what happened to you. Then we will have a better idea of what is possible, and what is not."

"Arisl, Vorsirion, do either of you know anything about this? Whatever it is, I think we should destroy it if we can. It seems to be the source of the corruption."

<Scene 2>

With the appearance, and disappearance, of the eye, Alexei raises his holy symbol in a ready/warding position. "Everyone, I suggest we move back and ready ourselves. This seems to be the source of the corruption and I will attempt to purge it."

Vorsirion, we need to get you some enchanted javelins. Clearly, you were meant to wield them.

Injured by the explosion, Alexei looks up at the man to make a quick estimate of their distance before channeling energy once again, this time to heal the living.

From the map it looks like Alexei is 30+ft from our madman. If he isn't, he'll step back so that the party is affected but not the opponent.

Ladies of the Woods is one of my favorite tracks.

Witcher OST isn't like Powerglove. I meant that I liked your music choice for this battle and was looking forward to when some of my favorite music would fit the situations we find ourselves in. Witcher is perfect for exploring a hostile, but beautiful, wilderness.

Black Mages might be more your style?

For my own curiosity, is Raven inspired by this fellow?

Wolfspirit, I don't think it makes a difference here, but, in case it does, Vasilyan's attacks don't seem to have the +1 modifier from Bless applied.

Thanks. Nice choice Raven. I'm looking forward to the Stolen Lands, I think the Witcher soundtracks will be perfect.

Raising the silver key in his hand once again, Alexei calls on the power of his god. "The Judge is with us! He blesses our struggle!"

Used domain spell slot to cast Bless from Leadership subdomain. Kick their bony asses! Remember to apply the +1 attack bonus to summoned minions as well. Not sure if applies to skeleton.

Alexei has taken his action for this round, correct?
I had hoped it would work better than that. Maybe there is something about this place that strengthens the undead?

Still by the writing, Alexei watches as the wall disappears and the boy runs away. Well... that was unexpected. Can anyone tell if that was a real boy or something else?

Readying his shield, he cautiously approaches where the wall/door was to see if he can notice anything, particularly if the boy left any footprints.

Perception check if applicable.

Vorsirion, I accepted it from the priestess. Arisl, sounds like a good plan to me.

When Vorsirion mentions his skills, Alexei offers him the chime. "If you are familiar with magical items, please. As we say, this will aid us all, and if something has overcome to two ranking priests on their home ground, I'd like as much aid as possible."

Moving towards Raven and the writing, "Unless you feel like staying here forever, or not getting paid if that is a more terrible fate, I'd suggest refraining from calling the Lady of Graves servants necromancers. It's a serious insult suggesting they are violating the dead, perhaps the goddess' strongest taboo."

"The writing is faded, probably old. If it was vandalism, the priests would have had it removed. I'd guess it's a reminder about the correct way to enter the Ossurary. Like most riddles, it's probably easy to remember or understand once you know the answer."

Leaning on his spear, he nods at Vorsirion's suggestion. "You could be right, if there was any place I'd expect to need it, it would be near the entrance. You usually lock the front door rather than the interior ones. Let's look things over a bit more though. I can't see how to open them, but it sounds like there should be doors to our left and right."

DM, did Arisl find the stone quill or did Raven/someone else?

I watched the superbowl once. There was an earthquake. Since then I have not watched the superbowl nor felt any earthquakes. I think the logic is sound.

As for SOP, our current marching order looks good to me. I'd recommend Vasilyan and Arisl use detect evil and magic respectively, while Raven and I search the room. That let's us have two on the look out, Vorsirion has good perception and Lucius is tough, while we zip through the room quickly. Thoughts?

The code goblins like eating posts, especially if you take a while between starting and finishing.
