It seems very unlikely at this point that a vote will fix anything. We have a player who is not acting like an adult, and I can’t imagine that any party consensus will stop the temper tantrum unless it happens to be exactly what he wants.

I might have a solution though: I’m out. Retcon the beach in whatever way works best for you all. I hope the rest of you are able to salvage this game.

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

@Peripreen- as I believe my last post made clear, I have been operating under the assumption that you did have enough time to do your research and craft your one item before we jumped. The only thing I thought I was interrupting was creating another new item with 5/9. It was not my intention to prevent you leveling.

@Everyone- I'm sorry if it seems like I was being underhanded or a control freak. The reason I was working behind the scenes with MJ was at first because I was looking for advice on reacting in a way that was faithful to my character but not disruptive to the party (which I have failed at spectacularly). The reason we... well, I don't want to speak for him... the reason I didn't tell you what was about to happen now was that we came up with what I think is a pretty cool solution that would remove my character's concerns/inhibitions about doing crazy things with the pyramid and I thought it would be a fun surprise for everyone. Clearly nothing about this is fun. So, here's what MJ and I had agreed to: Alexei teleported away to spend some time communing with the pyramid and will, as part of that, witness some things that radically change his perspective on time and time-travel (like the birth and death of the universe). He will be waiting for you at the inn when you arrive there (at which point full access to the pyramid will be restored) but he will be a very different man than the one who left you only minutes ago. Try to act surprised (or don't, what do I know).

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

I'm sorry that you're upset... I (and the pyramid) will be back.

Also, if we're going to talk about not waiting for other people to act, how about we address the fact that while everyone else was leveling and getting their heads around the pyramid you apparently had enough time to sneak in to the library while we were asleep (even though we seemed to clearly be in the same day), study the future enough to take a level in technologist, and craft some kind of tablet or whatever the item you said you made was?

If this were PVP, (which I didn't think it was), then I would say that a fair assessment of its starting point would be the moment that you decided to do that exact opposite of what the team consensus seemed to be.

Finally, I don't want to ruin any surprises but the thing I've been working on off-camera with MJ is a plan for us to move forward in a way that caters to what you (and pretty much you alone) obviously want to do. Because, honestly, the most realistic reaction for my character when you started going future-wild would have been to drop you off alone in the future and then talk with the rest of the PCs about whether or not we could actually use the pyramid responsibly, but I really didn't want to do that to another player.

edit: I’m sorry, too, if this comes across as gruff... I am (obviously) also annoyed with the situation

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

That is fair, and something I think I'm usually pretty good about; I apologize for neglecting it in this case.

UMD: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (17) + 20 = 37

@Johann- Sorry if that seemed abrupt. I've been PMing the GM about Alexei's concerns about how the pyramid is being used/abused, so it seemed really natural to me. Seeing people be really brazen in freeing mysterious prisoners and trying to gain benefits from the future made Alexei really nervous that Lucius was right about the pyramid being too dangerous, that's why he reacted so quickly.

@MJ- I don't think I knew about the gray guy? I posted about making the jump before they left the holding cell area, but Peripreen posted walking through the control room (to get from the cell to the workshop) before you posted the jump, so I'm unclear on the timing? If I knew he was there then I would have teleported him too; if not, I'll find out pretty now that I'm back, lol.

Having arrived at their destination, the Rabbi immediately teleports himself and his companions out of the Pyramid, to the shore a mile or so from the city.

"We have arrived at our destination," he announces as a scowl creeps over his face. "Hmm... I meant to arrive under the cover of darkness, but I suppose this will do..." He points inland and instructs, "the city is about a mile due west of here. I need to find a better place to leave the pyramid, where nobody is going to stumble across it. Meet me at the Jade Dragon Inn."

With that, the Rabbi blinks away leaving his companions stranded on the beach.

Alexei wanders towards the commotion when he hears Zagathoth loudly expressing concerns. He scowls when he spots the foolish fey releasing a prisoner, and carrying some device that appears to be from the future.

Lucius may have been right... we can’t let anyone stay on board for long, it seems...

Hurrying back to the helm, the Rabbi sits at the controls and promptly attempts the leap to Kyoto, two weeks ago... at night time... underwater, just off the coast (so the pyramid is obscured by the water, but within teleportation range).

I’m still around- I’ve been PMing MJ about something before I really do any more gameplay posts.

MJ- you should have a follow up PM waiting right now, actually

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

Alexei does not immediately look up from his studies in the library when Johann and Ihrin enter. As they talk about Japan and their impending trip he pauses and offers, ”Be careful not to learn about the future- it could have terrible consequences if we change what might have been... It would be good for you to learn something about the past two weeks though- when we travel there we will go back to some point during that window. Nobody will suspect we’ve come to aid the Ogon Fox if we arrive before him.”

Are there spellbooks in the library?

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

Huzzah!

Leveling as a mystic theurge takes some time, and I’m buried in end of term papers for grad school, but I’ll get it done as soon as I can.

I still teleport him as close to Rome as I can from here.

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

***earlier this morning***
Roused by his dream, the Rabbi teleports to the helm to make sure everything is secure. When he finds the Cardinal looking for a way out he sighs. Placing a hand on his Gentile counterpart’s shoulder he says, ”I’m sorry, Lucius, that we couldn’t come to some understanding, but if you wish to leave I will not stop you. Return to Rome and make preparations. We shall arrive before the attack to aid in the fight against Nero and his minions.”

I’ll teleport him to Rome, if possible... if not, I’ll take the pyramid to Rome (which is a few hours behind Kiev, so it should still be dark) for just long enough to drop him off.

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

”I haven’t learned to scry on people yet...” Alexei answers as he watches Habiba with great interest, ”but if there are any spellbooks in the library I may be able in a few minutes.”

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

There is no longer need for urgency... with the pyramid we can go spend a few months in japan saving the Fox and then return to this field seconds after we left.

The Rabbi gives Johann a sidelong glance and shakes his head. "Fourteen-hundred years and not a one of you has bothered to learn what a rabbi is," he huffs, "it means 'teacher' and, until synagogues rose in importance after Nero had the second Temple razed, we mostly instructed our families and neighbors or became itinerants like Yeshua. It wasn't rabbis that were collecting anything at the Temple, that was the Korahim and the Levites; it wasn't rabbis that had Yeshua arrested, that was the Sanhedrin- the religious council that feared that his willingness to be identified as the son of David was about to cause a violent uprising in Jerusalem; and, it wasn't rabbis who executed him: that was the occupying Roman government which apparently shared their fear."

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

Edit (sort of)
My last post got ninja’d by a pretty big one from Lucius...

Lucius did you read my gameplay post at all? I understand your practical concerns about how the pyramid could alter the shape of war, but I really do think that any churchman worth his salt (particularly one who’s mystic connection to God is of sufficient strength to cast spells) should at least consider the possibility that we have been divinely charged with safeguarding and putting to good use this potent tool?

I mean... shouldn’t you at least be casting some spells to discern what’s right? I guess Commune isn’t available until next level but how about an augry or a divination or something?

Johann Kaltgeboren wrote:

I love the Rabbi's ideas of going back in time to find missing artifacts. With the purpose of gaining power to help us defeat Nero!

For example... The Grail! It went missing because we took it! I love it.

Yeshua is the Hebrew name for Jesus, so when I said “the famed cup of your Rabbi Yeshua” I was suggesting the grail (which it makes total sense for Johann to miss but I expect Lucius would recognize the reference.

I (Alexei, in character) am pretty convinced that recovering artifacts that went missing is a solid plan... I’m/he’s not a stubborn man, so if someone can make a convincing argument to the contrary that might change but my/his plan right now is to start gathering. Some examples of targets I’d like to consider (just off the top of my head)...
The ark of the covenant [Jerusalem, 597 BCE]
Scrolls from the Great Library [Alexandria Egypt, 48 BCE]
The Holy Grail and/or Spear of Longinus [Jerusalem, 28 CE]
Legendary Weapons: Excalibur, Hrunting (Beowulf), Gáe Bulg (Cúchulainn)
Legendary Armor: Armor of Achilles, Golden Chainmail (Sigurd)

The legendary ones aren’t necessarily thought of as ‘missing’ in the real world (because they’re assumed not to have really existed), but they generally don’t show up anywhere else after the one legend. There’s tons more stuff like that too... Tarnhelm was a magic helmet that could make you invisible or shapechange in a German legend; the Seal of Solomon was a ring that could imprison demons; the Book of Thoth was reported to be a vast collection of magical knowledge (from Egypt)...

The Rabbi listens closely to the arguments put forth by Lucius, Habiba, and Johann. After considering their words he answers, ”Habiba is wrong about a great many things, but she is correct in thinking that it would be hasty to try to destroy the pyramid right away.”

”Have you not considered, Cardinal, that perhaps the Holy One has entrusted this tool to us? Nero has had centuries to grow in power and collect artifacts to aid his work... to defeat him we may need a resource like this. And who is it that commands the storms and the seas which delivered us to the pyramid? Is it not the Lord of Hosts who brought us down to the depths in order to lift us up?”

”It is incumbent upon us to show ourselves worthy of the charge: in accepting the responsibility, and in exercising it with wisdom and restraint.

He pauses for a moment then adds, ”Think of how many valuable resources have been lost to history... the ark of the Covenant vanished when the Babylonians sacked Jerusalem...the famed cup of your Rabbi Yeshua was lost after his crucifixion... the whole library of Alexandria was assumed destroyed in the flames... perhaps those things all disappeared because we retrieved them for use in our divinely appointed task...”

The Rabbi seats himself upon the throne surrounded by knobs and levers and begins studying them. When Zagathoth asks about returning to the day of his many conquests, he chuckles and explains, ”it doesn’t allow you to relive the same day, Emir, but to be present in other times... if we went back to last week, you wouldn’t be back in those same situations doing those same activities, the you of right now would just be physically present at that same time along with the you of back then... you might be able to watch what the older you was doing, but you wouldn’t be redoing it. Also, if we were to interact with older versions of ourselves we would be rewriting our own memories and I doubt very much that many of us could withstand that psychic trauma.”

As he begins to make adjustments to the controls, Alexei says to Lucius and Johann, ”All that can be discussed once we are safely away from here, and on dry land.”

I’m going to try to teleport us right away, we can explore the inside once there aren’t creatures actively stalking us. Do I need to make any kind of roll to get there?

yeah- I just got into gameplay and saw that there are like 10-12 posts where everyone knows what it is... probably too late to try to retcon all that. we can just assume that Al made his knowledge check before he let the cat out of the bag.

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

well... I guess that answers my question(s) about keeping a lid on what the pyramid can do :(

As multiple ideas are voiced about where and when they should head, the Rabbi raises a hand and offers, "Please, Johann is right about needing time to discuss what we shall do. Not about immediately heading to Atlantis before its sinking though. I know a clearing in the woods a day's ride north of Kiev. The most dangerous thing there is an occasional wolf, and I believe I can bring us there safely when we're ready. First, is there anything else we need to do here before leaving?"

If there's nothing else that anyone really wants to do here right away then I'll teleport the whole party inside and then try to take us to quiet, inconspicuous clearing.

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

MJ- I think you may have missed one of posts (in discussion last night). How aware are others of what the pyramid can do if I don’t tell them? I’m guessing/assuming I know because I’ve become the helmsman but does anyone else in the part know anything yet?

I don’t want to cause any trouble but with 26 Int I’m smart enough to understand how much trouble we could cause with this, and how much attention we could attract... I’d like to be fairly closed lipped about what it can do...

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

Yeah... how much does everyone else recognize about what the pyramid can do? With 26 Int, I actually understand the dangers the pyramid (and now I/we) pose to reality, and the risks of finding ourselves in conflict with groups like the Heptagon (or worse, pissing off Michael or God). I plan/hope to employ it with some restraint and probably won’t be real forthcoming about exactly how powerful it is (even with my companions) if I can avoid it.

Clad in bright yellow and red robes with an ocher yarmulke, he looks no older than his early twenties. At less than six feet tall, with a slight build, he is dwarfed by his green companion. constant effect items (like belts, headbands, bracers of armor, cloak of protection, etc) all continue to function normally while you’re polymorphed but you cannot activate use-activated items while they’re merged into your form. As the GM, MJ could obviously ignore that rule if he wants to. This link should take you to the relevant rules (about 5 paragraphs down).

HP 58/58 | AC 13 | F +6 R +4 W +9 | perception (darkvision) +1, initiative +1 | active effects: --

The boots aren’t a constant effect... I don’t think you can activate them while you’re in an animal form? if you have enough uses, you could shift to human form, use them, and then shift back but that would probably only work when we have time to buff before combat, otherwise you’re wasting like the first 3 rounds...

I'd also like to study the dimension door scroll... I suppose for that same reason I'd like to study the remove curse scroll too? Oh, and if no one else is interested, I'd take the wand of magic missiles just for some basic ranged damage when its needed?
