Decided to go with a Red Rider instead of the Black Rider. We've been coronavirus-ing the campaign, google hangout every other week, supplemented by blogging. It's been fun. This is what happened at the Winter Portal (aka the Siege Frigia). The Rider is already laying on the ground with an ice spear sticking out of his side and blue/green veins of ugly energy writhing on him.

A preternatural silence envelops the party, the roar of the Winter Portal’s snowy fountain dropping to a gentle, continuous murmur. The Rider looks each of you in the eye, measuring your resolve. Upon closer examination, he appears to have a faint trace of elfin blood in the fine features behind the substantial beard. Then he nods firmly. Shifting slightly, the Rider pulls the rucksack on which he is lying around to his lap.

Reaching inside the sack, he pulls out a package wrapped in festive paper and festooned with colorful ribbons, a riot of reds, orange, and yellow. The package is roughly a three foot square, and about six inches deep. He hands the package to Camerata. “Sister Camerata, of the family Stokes! Forget not your Lady. Though your travels take you far, if you keep your Faith, she will be ever with you.”

Reaching in the rucksack a second time, he pulls out a decorated package and hands it to Siggie. The theme of the décor appears to be faeries and fairy tale creatures. The package is long and narrow, roughly four feet long and about six inches square. He hands the package to Siggie. “Siggie Floid! Forget not your roots in the First World! Whatever power you might need will surround all of you, if you are willing to use it. But always consider the costs. You most of all, young magus.”

Reaching in the sack once more, he pulls out another colorful package and hands it to Cael. The theme of the wrapping is icy blues and varying shades of purple. The small package is easily held in both hands. “Cael Fiondearg! There is already some small piece of Winter in your heart, as in all of us. Be sure that if you continue to embrace it, you do so knowing that once given a seat, the cold beast is loath to give up territory.”

Finally, he pulls a fourth package wrapped in festive paper and festooned with colorful ribbons from his sack, decorated in the silver and gold of Iomedae. The package is roughly four feet long, and narrow. He hands the package to the young paladin. “Gareth Ulix! Faerie steel is my Gift to you. Use it in good health, and your Lady’s honor, and you just might survive this. If you get a chance, put it between the ribs of Logrivich! That worm is, in the end, the death of me.”

Gesturing impatiently to Gareth and Cael, the Rider takes a hand from each and struggles to his feet. He grunts. “Last things.” The big man takes a pouch from his belt and extends it before him in his right hand. Then reaching across his abdomen with his left hand, he grasps the ice spear still jutting from his side. A faint sizzle can be heard from where he grasps the ice. With a mighty bellow, he jerks the spear from his wound, which starts to flow freely with his life’s blood. Grunting, he draws the spear across the pouch. An intense blue light pulses strong from the pouch for a few seconds, then fades away. He flips the pouch to Cael. “Keys to the Hut. Don’t lose them; I don’t have a spare set.”

Giving a single sharp barking laugh that ends in a groan, the Rider turns to face the crashing noises that have increased in intensity from the Border Wood. Holding the now-smoking ice spear in one hand, he reaches over his shoulder with his free hand, draws the great battle axe, and appears to grow a foot taller, regaining his lost bulk even as a torrent of Winter creatures begins to pour forth from the Woods. A dozen flitting pixies are first to appear, quickly followed by a white weasel the size of a large dog, then a couple of frosty looking, indigo-skinned elf lords. A few towering blue trolls walk out from the woods as well. Finally, a shaggy snow-white creature that looks like a cross between an ogre and an albino bear ambles into view.

The Red Rider sneers. “You traitorous toad lickers! Come to get some, did you?” Bellowing, he hefts his weapons high, now seemingly unaffected by his mortal wounds, then shrugs his shoulders a couple times as if to loosen them up. ”Yeti! You scum. Even on your worst day you’d not have rebelled from Baba Yaga on your own!” He looks at each minion of winter present in turn. “Some would offer you each a chance to come home. Screw that.” The Rider spits blood on the ground. “You’re all going to die here. You are each going to be an example to all the nations of Winter. It will be a thousand years before any of the Cold Blood even think of disobeying Baba Yaga without shuddering and looking for a place to puke.” The Rider takes a single step forward, and all the gathered fae take a half step back in response. The Red Rider grins wickedly, then beckons. The Yeti howls in challenge and starts to stride forward. The rest follow suit, though not as fast.

Red nods, suddenly solemn. “Mother,” he says softly. “Know your Son was faithful to the end.” He looks at the party as if suddenly realizing they were still there. “Oi! You folks have places to be. Go!” he barks sharply, gesturing toward the Winter Portal. Turning his attention back to the advancing denizens of Winter, he spoke his last. “And be sure that when, not if, you free Baba Yaga, you tell her that the Kringle was ever loyal.”

As the party passed into the whirling blue pillar of snow, one by one, the last thing they saw was the Red Rider, striding down the snow-covered slope, singing a merry tune that had something to do with making a list and checking it twice.

I have looked for a list of scenarios to expect at Gen Con this year in PFS and have been unable to find it. The list was posted in February last year. Is it out yet somewhere else in the message boards? Thank you!

Anyone know what the subtiers are this year? Has the playtest been run at Paizocon yet?

Thanks!

For example, small earth elemental has strength 16 and BAB +2.

It's slam attack is: Melee slam +6 (1d6+4)

Wouldn't to hit bonus be STR+BAB (+5) and damage 1d6+3? Are slams given 1 1/2 strength bonus on all creatures like a two handed weapon attack?

Trying to calc stats for some summon monsters with augmented summoning for Gen Con and want to be sure I get it right.

Thanks!

I saw a link to this thing one time when doing some GM prep, now wanted to make use of it as a player (wizard doing some summoning in PFS events at gencon.

It allowed you to pick monsters, then checkbox different things like templates, augmented summoning stat mods, etc, and generated a statblock based on the modifications.

Anyone maybe have the link? Thanks!

I'd rather a smaller tablet, such as the Google Nexus 7, to keep it portable. Has anyone tried looking at the PDFs regularly on such a device? How big of a difference is it making to dwld the lite versions versus the full sized versions? Or should I just bite the bullet and lug the big (10") tablet? Better reading size, obviously, but substantially more bulky, especially with a solid cover. What am I looking for in a tablet to make it a good PDF reader?

Thoughts?

A character just lost his burrow speed when he lost is template. The character was ten feet underground.

Is there any hope? We are at table right now.

Has anyone run the numbers? Is it worth a feat? Is it a wash? Is it just the difference between occasional explosive damage versus even less occasional cataclysmic damage? Does it just come down to personal preference. He would be two-handing the weapon the vast majority of the time. I guess one other advantage would be to use the falcata one handed and haul out the heavy steel +x shield to increase chances of survival. Also, character would be for PFS if that matters.

The character would be probably 2/3 fighter levels and 1/3 barbarian levels.

Please advise.

As I read it, it is just the base cost for the weapon that is doubled, right? The only extra cost to enchanting the weapon is the +2000 gold. So a coldiron longsword +1 would cost 4,330 (15 base x2=30, 300 mwk, 2000 to be able to enchant it, 2000 for the +1 enchantment).

"Weapons made of cold iron cost
twice as much to make as their normal counterparts (not
counting masterwork costs). Also, adding any magical
enhancements to a cold iron weapon increases its price by
2,000 gp. This increase is applied the first time the item is
enhanced, not once per ability added."

Where does it start? I mean, where does the game shift from pure hit point damage in fights to death by being incapacitated by status effects, ability drain/damage, etc? Our group is teetering on the edge, I think. What tiers does this start to happen in PFS? How vital is a cleric in group at that point, compared to a creative wizard and a rogue or ninja with UMD?

A second question, what advice does anyone have for a group looking to kick up their game? What common mistakes are made or preparations overlooked as players move from the minors leagues to the majors? Does Kyle Baird have a top ten list, maybe? Or one of Painlord's snazzy monologues?

Looking to learn in some manner that does not involve putting in twenty sessions followed by painful life lesson.

Thanks!

Based on the first paragraph, I would guess that this class feature simply adds spells to the paladin's spelllist:

An oathbound paladin adds one spell to the paladin spell list at each paladin spell level she can cast (including spell levels for which she would only gain spells per day if her Charisma were high enough to grant bonus spells of that level). Her oath determines what spell is added to the spell list. If the paladin has multiple oaths, the spells from each oath are added to her spell list.

However, in the second paragraph there is talk about "slots" and reference to a cleric's domain class ability, whiich makes me think the oathbound paladin has an extra slot at each level in which he could prepare his Oathbound Paladin spells:

If an oathbound paladin has more than one oath, she may prepare any one of her oath’s spells in that slot (similar to a cleric choosing one of her two domain spells to prepare in a domain spell slot).

Please advise. Thanks.

I have a friend starting a new tiefling. It is not based on a boon. Therefore, he needs to have a copy of ARG in order to do this, correct? Or would Bestiary I still suffice?

The sale price is awesome, at $5 per module. But why the low price, when some of the other older APs are not on such a sale. Overstock? Is it getting updated to Pathfinder system (wasn't it based on 3.5?) in a hardback after ROTRL? I would accept rumor and innuendo here, verified facts not necessary.

Separate question, did anyone play through it? Any memories, good or bad?

Have your body recovered by 5 PP
a rescue team

What exactly does this get you? Body only? Presumably stripped of gear, or not? GM discretion based on how you died? (i.e. band of gobbies vs. dead on spikes in a pit trap).

Is there any chance that a sub-section of the messageboards will be dedicated to Gencon, in the same manner that Paizocon was organized? I realize that Paizocon is Paizo's baby, but it would be a real service to the community to herd all the Paizo/PFS Gencon-related posts into a smaller corner of the interwebs. A service, because it will keep me from getting grumpy because I am running GENCON key word searches on the Paizo boards all day.

Is there a significance? I just noticed that some from season 3 have a grand lodge logo up there, and some the ruby phoenix. Does it help to distinguish story arcs? Geographic location? Season? Are they random?

OK, so I am a well-traveled pathfinder. Been around awhile. Accumulated some miscellaneous crap (IE cold weather gear, ten foot pole, etc) that I do not need on my next mission. Is there anything published that says I can/cannot stash stuff in Absalom at the lodge? At local lodges? Or just play it out. A player asked in the group, and I am not sure what all privileges and/or rights your typical pathfinder has at the lodges.

If this is covered in a book, just point me in the right direction. Thanks folks.

It seems that, based on the limited number of scenarios I have looked at, the DCs never change whether you are playing up or down. Since many faction missions are dependent on the ability to execute a specific skill check, it seems that the skill check DCs would be a little more level appropriate. Has this already been kicked around? Under consideration for change in season 4? If it's repetitive to a previous thread, I apologize in advance.

Grand Lodge

Are there particular parts of the messageboards or internet which would make good starting places to look for tips on putting together nice built-up maps for modules or PFS scenarios?

Grand Lodge 1/5

Guide to PFS Organized Play, p.4, states that "You can view a frequently updated list of all campaign-legal Additional Resources online at paizo.com/pathfindersociety/resources."

That list is not there. Where is it?

I was just looking at the RAW, anticipating a Paladin for possible use in PFS. I don't think in our home games we have ever made the "sword and board" paladin sheath or drop his weapon to swift action heal himself during a fight. However, it does seem to be RAW. If so, it would make me lean towards a two-handed weapon version if I felt the LOH in a fight would be important.

Hows does the fact that you can "melee touch attack" to "use this healing power to deal damage to undead creatures" play into the equation? Can that be addressed by whacking someone with a weapon? And would it be damage in addition to the normal melee/power attack/whatever attack damage?

Thanks all!

I ask here because most of the PFS play by post scenarios I have participated utilized Google Wave to great effect. The map tools, dice bots, and ease of setting up necessary private waves made it very handy. I am getting ready to start a Kingmaker PBP campaign and had just sent invites when the inevitable final word on Google Wave came down. So. what else do people use?
