There's a couple threads up in the website issues forum.

They have replied, but no date on a fix.
Something involving bandwidth.

I'm sorry for the hold up, I've been slammed at work, and at home and could not get the time to sit down and even start putting a sheet together. I've been barely able to check my other PBP games daily.

I have had the SF rule book for a bit but hadn't ever started looking at them them, and it's showing :)

With that said, I'm most of the way through creation of the character so far. (A Vesk Solarian using a melee type solar weapon.) I've got stats, feats skills, and found a starting equipment guide list that I'll steal and use for the gear stuff.

I hope to be completed and have a full profile/ sheet for GM to review by this coming Sunday.

As I know this isn't quite fair to the rest of you, I had messaged GM about this, and I did offer to have you start without me.
If the time frame isn't acceptable to you all, I can also (reluctantly) bow out.

Ordinarily you can't bash with a buckler without investing in some feats, but your Rodelero Archetype lets you treat it as a one-handed piercing weapon, AND make bashing attacks doing damage as a light shield. It's not two weapon fighting though. it allows you to make the bash in place of a normal or iterative attack, not grant an extra attack.

Look over the rules for bashing attacks with magical shields, as those will apply to your buckler bash.

Shield Bash Attacks: You can bash an opponent with a light shield. See “shield, light” on Table: Weapons for the damage dealt by a shield bash. Used this way, a light shield is a martial bludgeoning weapon. For the purpose of penalties on attack rolls, treat a light shield as a light weapon. If you use your shield as a weapon, you lose its Armor Class bonus until your next turn. An enhancement bonus on a shield does not improve the effectiveness of a shield bash made with it, but the shield can be made into a magic weapon in its own right.

Basically your +1 buckler will give you +2 Shield Bonus to your AC, unless you make an attack with it during the round, at which point unless you have the feat that allows you to keep the AC bonus it will be negated.

You won't get the + 1 enhancement bonus to attack with the buckler unless you have a separate enchantment placed on it as a weapon (at all the normal costs for enchanting a weapon.

There's another thread here on the forums that questions whether a buckler can be enchanted as a weapon, not just as a shield, but I'd talk to your GM. In my personal opinion, it's not much different than any other shield, even if you can't normally make attacks with a buckler.

Male Human Expert/ 5

I've been swamped and hadn't even sat down at Character creation I'll try to scoot along for next week deadline.

Male Human Expert/ 5

The more I'm reading on the Solarian, the more I'm leaning in that direction. (It's an old and obscure reference, but I get a little bit of a "Vanth Dreadstar" feel from the class.)
I'll probably do a mercenary, guard, or soldier theme, but might consider something else.

We should probably hash out the how and why we're all together.

Male Human Expert/ 5

Just FYI, finally had a chance to read the info dump from GM, I may reconsider the uplifted bear in favor of another race that's not going to be wearing a fur coat on the surface of the sun.

Male Human Expert/ 5

If anyone objects I'll change to another race. I'm not heart set on it.
:)

Male Human Expert/ 5

The Uplifted Bear was my idea for a concept, but if folks don't want it, I'll find another race to work it up with.

No pressure either way on my part.

Male Human Expert/ 5

Dotting in.

I've only just started looking into the Starfinder rules and materials, but I appreciate the invite. I'll try to get up to speed sooner versus later, but please bear with me in the meantime.

I don't have any specific race, class or theme planned, but the solarian, adept, and the soldier seemed interesting so far.
But if someone else is set on one of those, I'll defer.

I'll probably go with one of the standard races as well to keep it pretty simple.

Upon further consideration, if selected, Silarsha will be taking the Dragon Skald Archetype. It fits the touched by the sea trait, and the born to a sailing family; then turning pirate theme much better than the base Skald.

Edited and reposted comment

Submitting for your consideration:

Silarsha

I think the personality will fit the theme. Growing up hearing stories of raiding, getting press ganged into piracy and finding that maybe it's close enough to the old tales to keep doing.
Now to think about how to tell her father . . .

Also I forgot to include how she'd change over the levels:

Spoiler:

I prefer to let things happen organically and be influenced by the game and interaction with the other players. Stats and crunch will likely stick to the basic melee support with spells theme, but depending on what happens in character, she may change as she's influenced by RP with the other characters. Things like loss and adversity, camaraderie or love should have a direct influence on how she develops.
Also regarding the CN alignment. I see this as representing her desire to be free to make her own path and a lack of interest in the moral repercussions of good or evil acts. While she's not averse to raiding and taking other property for her own profit, or acts of violence to accomplish that (as her ancestors did) she's not unnecessarily cruel or randomly attacking folks as an act of whim. She comes from a strong family, and worked with a crew that was like a family so the "betray the party for no good reason" CN trope doesn't fit her.
I considered leaving her LN, but found myself having a hard time thinking of a reason she wouldn't hop the first boat home after escaping.

(I think I've made all the needed changes, but may make a few minor tweaks if I missed something.)

Hi there,
I'd also be interested in playing.
I've been wanting to play Skull and Shackles for years.
My concept would be for an Ulfen Human Skald.
Her role would be a mix of up close melee combat with support via buff spells and maybe helping out with party face duties.
Maybe not a captain for a while, but certainly a valued crew member.
(I had created the concept in an applications for another PBP game, but ended up rewriting to a Bloodrager to fill the front line martial roll for that group after I was selected to play before the GM vanished and the game died off.)
The character profile as played in that game is here.
Obviously the some of the crunch and the backstory would need to be altered to fit, but the young Ulfen who dreams of the days of raiding, and revenge against those who (have yet to) wrong her still appeals to me. Crunch wise, I'd probably adjust the alignment to fit the your requirements and the more chaotic setting for this AP.

About me:

Spoiler:

I've been gaming on and off for over 3 decades.
2nd Ed D&D, a bunch of White Wolf V:TM gaming and running.
I've been playing Pathfinder more recently, and took to PBP games to get my playing fix when I wasn't able attend the local PFS chapter.
I'm currently running a Carrion Crown game in RL for friends, and
I'm currently in one ongoing PBP game with similar posting requirements. I can usually post more often, but sometimes I don't get the chance due to work or other real life, but once a day/ one post per weekend is easily do-able.
I have read Painlord's guide and while my writing style isn't perfect, I feel like I can be a useful member to any game I play.
I'd hope you'll look over my aliases for samples of my game posts, to see if I fit what you're looking for.

Thanks for your consideration!

Dotting for interest.

I'll settle a build shortly, but for a rough sketch, I'm thinking of a Warpriest, of Abadar or Torag.

Most likely a Human or Dwarf for race.

Athletic or Healthy Campaign Trait.

For backstory, having arrived with the third group seems to fit best.
Being a devotee of either of those Deities would work well for a new colony, advancing civilization would go along with the Abaradan profile. Or a blacksmith dedicated to Torag taking his skills to the frontier where both craftsmanship, and combat prowess can be essential also clicks.

Build will likely focus on one hand and shield, though not likely using Two Weapon Fighting. I'll see how the numbers play out when I build it.

I have not played the AP. nor do I own it. I've followed an ongoing pbp game through the first book, but I can separate my knowledge from the characters.

I'm currently in one other PBP, it was two but the GM vanished over a month ago, and we called it a loss.

Thanks for the opportunity to apply.
Good luck to everyone!

Dot for interest.

I really like the idea of building a party of characters together, as it allows for shared backgrounds, etc.

Your posting rules are fine, maybe even lighter than I'm used to.

I'm currently playing in one other PbP game. I was starting a second, but the GM seems to have cast "Vanish" before the first encounter even really began.

I typically lean towards martial and skill monkey sorts, but I'm not against playing an arcane or divine caster if the group needs.

Male Human Expert/ 5

So I think it's reasonable to assume we'll all meet up to set out, and if anyone needs something cheap like a bedroll, or trail rations we can figure it out. (I've got 1.95 gp burning a hole in my pouch to chip in.)
Teryll will walk his horse along with the unmounted folks.
Probably using the horse as a pack animal for gears for now.

Worst LARP ever. . .

A lot depends on your Skald's fighting style.

It seems like they are thinking of more defense than offense, which sounds like my PFS Skald who uses a one hand weapon and shield right now. It's not the most optimized for damage output, but does okay, and I use Arcane Strike to add a bit of damage for the cost of a swift action most rounds.

If he wants to keep that play style, I'd suggest, as gold allows:

-Masterwork Breastplate or Agile Breastplate. (350 or 550 gold)

-Darkwood Shield (About 257 gold)
This is masterwork Wooden heavy shield with 0 ACP, and half the weight of a normal wooden shield, it's a Core Rulebook so should not bother any GM even at lowest levels.

-Masterwork Weapon (300 gold + the base weapon cost)
What specific weapon they chose is a matter of personal preference/ character style. I'd stick with a Martial weapon over a simple one as they generally preform better. There's been a lot of back and forth on the forums about best weapons, and the rough consensus I've seen is the higher the crit range, the more damage they'll do overall (so an 18-20/x2 --> 19-20/x2 --> 20/ x3)

I hope everyone has a good holidays!

I will be withdrawing from consideration for this game, I was lucky enough to be selected to play in another pbp game, and don't wish to take a space from someone else who could use it, or divide my time between two games.
Enjoy the game, it's a fun module!

I would be very interested in playing this module via pbp.
I've got several character concepts that could fit into any group, though I do lean toward martial types.

My pbp has been limited to one PFS module as a replacement player.
(See Arol under my aliases for samples of my play posts)

Full disclosure: I have run this module for a group of friends face to face; but I can keep the ooc knowledge separate from in character, and if that doesn't disqualify me, I'd love a chance to be involved from the player side.

Congratulations to all selected!

GM, thanks for the consideration, and I hope you all enjoy the game.

I've got an idea for a character, but can't really see a way to make it very effective.
I was going to try a Picaroon Swashbuckler/ Pistolero Gunslinger for PFS play, but the more I plot it out, the less effective it seems.
I can deal with the twf penalties, and reloading issues, but I just dont see this build shining at either of its aspects.
Rough build was Pistolero at level 1, Picaroon at level 2, then back to gunslinger for the rest.
Feats and basic crunch:
1 Rapid Reload
3 Point Blank Shot
5 Precise Shot/ Bonus Extra Grit
7 Piranha Strike (or likely power attack to go with rapier.)
9 Deadly Aim /Bonus Opening Volley
(Only building to level 10 right now)

Half Elf with Dual Minded starting at level 2 from a PFS rewrite.
Starting Stats are STR 13, Dex 17, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 10, Cha 14
Bumps are Dex at level 4, STR at 8

Gear was start with Pistol and Short Sword (light off hand), then work up to a pepperbox and rapier.

Am I missing something?
Am I better going all levels of either gunslinger or all Picaroon without a dip?
I'm not the greatest optimizer, but I can't really see this working as I'd like it to.
(i.e. doing decent damage, and not crippling the character with penalties for the sword and pistol flavor.

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

I purchased two books in PDF format on the evening of 5-31-2018.
The order shows as completed and they are allegedly "in your downloads" according to the web page, however they are not listed or available for download on my account's digital content page.
I have waited nearly 24 hours, and checked my content list from 2 separate devices both before and after clearing my browser cache.

Please advise how I can correct this issue, as I've been charged for these items and cannot access them.

Check out Treantmonk's Ranger guide.
Here.
Look at the switch hitter build, that should be close to the flavor your looking for, and is similar enough to do with a Slayer.

The guide is a bit dated, and there are likely newer feats, and things that outshine what's there, but it's at least a starting point.

Also I'd probably boost my strength stat up to 18 raise the con to at least 14 and drop the dexterity buy a little bit so that the point buy numbers add up.
You are more likely to end up in melee as a switch hitting build and even if you're using your bow the strength bonus can add your damage with a compound or adaptable strength bow.

Just to check my luck with the dice.

Roll#1: 4d6 - 3 ⇒ (6, 3, 4, 6) - 3 = 16
Roll#2: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 5, 2, 3) - 1 = 10
Roll#3: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 1) - 1 = 12
Roll#4: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 6) - 1 = 13
Roll#5: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 6) - 2 = 15
Roll#6: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 2, 2, 3) - 2 = 7

Hmmm, I might be able to do something with that, but not sure I'll have time to create something fitting to the locale before closing.
If I can't, I hope everyone has fun!

I just hit level 2 on my PFS Halfling Unchained Rogue, and I've decided to use the re-write to make him into a (nearly) full martial.

I'm staying Halfling so that's not changing, but I was thinking of a 1 level dip into Warpriest (Cayden) for the free weapon focus, first level blessings, divine spell(s), and damage die increase to offset the small weapon.
Dex to damage (probably rapier) will come online at 3, then the Deeds at 5.

I can't really see a big negative to the dip, but am I missing something?

Not posting full crunch because I haven't even started yet , but I'm not a fan of dump stats or going below 8 post racial, so stats will be close to 10, 17, 14, 10, 13, 15. (I know, I could leave the STR at 8 to boost the others, but I want some carrying capacity)

Too late to edit, but secondary options would be Oracle or Sorcerer. Maybe a Bard or Skald depending on group make up.

I'd be interested, and have a few ideas for characters depending on what's needed with a Warpriest or Bloodrager being my primary choice.

Arol steps through the doorway. "Hmmmm. I guess I'm the only one here who can't see so well in the dark. . ."

He reaches into his backpack and fumbles for a brief moment. "Ah. There we go." and produces a torch from inside the bag.

Setting it down, he retrieves his flint and steel from a pocket, and swiftly sparks the torch into life.

Picking up the flaming torch, he settles his gear back into place and placing a hand on the handle of one of the daggers he follows after the others.

GM: I'm assuming when you said "dark" you meant full darkness and reacting accordingly. If the conditions are not full darkness, and just dim light he'd hold off on the light source until absolutely needed.
Also, this is what I get for playing a character without darkvision *grumbles* :)

If you are still recruiting, I'd like to submit Arol A Halfling Unchained Rogue / 1
He's set up to be a sneak around/ skill monkey.

I'm a somewhat experienced gamer trying to get into my first Pathfinder pbp game.
I've posted a couple of links on the AP google doc, but figued I'd comment here as well.
For characters I've currently got:

  • Silash - Dwarven Divine Tracker Ranger created for a WOTR pbp application.
  • Teryll - Half-Elf Bloodrager (Black Blood) created for a Kingmaker pbp application

Both are 20 point buy, and neither character was selected so have not been in play in any game.

Enjoy the games folks!

I've seen RHPS too many times to count.
Though in my defense, I was running the projectors at the movie theater.
:)

I'm flexible, and willing to play whatever will be most useful for the group. If you're ok with the first character, I'll stick with it.

GM_DBH wrote:

A rough list of what we have so far.

Lots of muscle, not much Arcane, little in the skills group, and no Divine?

Still lots of time. While I prefer some party balance I don't mind interesting characters that can cover a need rather than having someone there just because they are the only one of that type.

And a bit of a sausage fest as well. The only ladies are all Rangers as well?

I can't do much about the gender thing, but I can put together some type of skill monkey sort in place of the meatshield.

Likely an Unchained Rogue or Investigator, maybe Halfling or full Elf. Just need a day or two to sit down and work it the crunch and a reasonable backstory.

3 4d6 - 3 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 3) - 3 = 13

7 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (2, 6, 1, 3) - 1 = 11
8 4d6 - 4 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 5) - 4 = 17

Hmm not too shabby.
I've got a Dwarven Ranger with Divine Tracker Archetype concept I've been building for PFS but haven't used yet.
Stats after racial: STR 17 DEX 15 CON 15* INT 13 WIS 16* CHA 9*

Are you okay with Dwarven Pantheon Diety from Dwarves of Golarion book? (Specifically Angradd - pg 29)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Having played a Dwarven core rogue all the way up to level 20 in a game I can feel your pain.
I'm also a fan of dagger wielding skulkers, but until your GM allows the Unchained version, you're in for a rough time.
My advice is as follows:

1. One Dagger or Two Weapon Fighting?

I used two short swords for the slightly higher damage versus daggers. In retrospect, a rapier is better because of the crit range, but use the weapon that you feel best suits your playstyle and idea of what your character should do. If you go two weapon, you must be prepared to not use it when you absolutely need to hit, because that -2 can be a crusher.

2. What exactly does the Bomber Rogue Talent do?

Well handled by others.

3. What kind of armor would you propose for a Rogue?

Well handled by others but look into the "shadow" enchantment when you upgrade to magical armor for a +5 (or more) to stealth.

4. What would you propose for Feats to make the Rogue more mobile in Combat?

For you, first step is either use your first Rogue Talent to pick up "Finesse Rogue" that will let you use your Dex bonus to hit with a one hand or light weapon. The Rogue Talent "Weapon Training" is also good as it gives you Weapon Focus for a +1 to hit, and should be high up on your "to do" list. Max out your Acrobatics skill so you can tumble around without taking attacks of opportunity, The "Dodge" feat is good for a +1 to AC, and you can use the next Feat "Mobility" to get an AC bonus versus those same AOO's due to movement. But as others said, the rest of the chain to Spring Attack may not be worth it.
You'll never be the biggest damage dealer in the party, but you can at least help out if you can get into flanking position, and throw a few extra dice from sneak attack.

Charon's Little Helper, and Fruian,
Thanks for the suggestions, I hadn't even considered Ironhide or Dodge feats instead of the shield focus.
Both of those are worth considering, as is the upgrade to heavy armor.

Thanks all for the replies.
I'll definitely consider the advice when finalizing the character.

I'm drafting characters for possible use in PFS games, and I'm thinking of a dwarf that fights with a Dwarven waraxe, and shield.
**I fully realize that this style is not top tier optimized for dpr, and I dislike dumpstat minmaxing but I still would like some opinions on if the character idea will be reasonably functional in a PFS environment**

I've narrowed my choices down to either a Ranger or a Slayer with rough draft builds below the spoilers. I'm also open to suggestions on my feat choices and order.

Dwarf/Ranger/20pt buy:

STR:16, DEX:12, CON:16, INT:11, WIS:14, CHA: 8
Traits: likely Glory of Old for +1 to dwarf racial save bonus, 2nd TBD probably an initiative booster.
Feat Plan
1 Power Attack
2 Two Weapon Fighting -combat style
3 Improved Shield Bash, Endurance -class bonus
4 -
5 Iron Will or Boon Companion if I take pet
6 Shield Master -combat style
7 Shield Slam
8 -
9 Lunge, or other feat
10 Bashing Finish -combat style
11 Shield Focus or other feat

Dwarf/Slayer/20pt buy:

STR:16, DEX:12, CON:16, INT:11, WIS:14 CHA: 8
Traits: likely Glory of Old for +1 to dwarf racial save bonus, 2nd TBD probably an initiative booster.
Feat Plan
1 Power Attack
2 Two Weapon Fighting -combat style
3 Improved Shield Bash, Endurance -class bonus
4 Rogue Talent: Weapon Training -slayer talent or Trapfinding
5 Iron Will
6 Shield Master -combat style
7 Shield Slam
8 Rogue Talent: Combat Trick Lunge
9 Shield Focus, or other feat
10 Bashing Finish -combat style
11 Improved Bull Rush or other feat

Gear selection: Dwarven Waraxe, and start with light shield with spikes until level 6, then swap up to heavy shield. Shield enchants will start with bashing, plus others as affordable. Weapon enchant will be decided based on class, but bane and/or holy seem favorable. For ranged attacks, maybe a sling for simplicity or a crossbow as its a very dwarf weapon.

Are either of these builds reasonable and viable for PFS use?
Any ideas to tweak that will help make up the lack of hard core optimization?

Thanks!
