Hey GM, I do not want to hold up this game, and I apologize for taking this long.

Please move ahead without me. I need a hiatus for a bit. I can also drop the game if it is best for the group.

I have someone I am training to take some of the workload off of my plate, but the timeline for her to work independently is about 1 month away. Until then, I am still working long hours with no creative energies at the end of the day.

Apologies again.

Actaeon scowls at the Gnome, "If it wasn't for farms and us farmboys, barons would starve." He leaves the Gnome before listening to any more retorts. 'I'll end these bandits for Rostland, but there is no way I will allow the land to be subjugated by someone with his arrogance.'

After pouring another mug of mead, he works his way back to Linzi. 'After the Gnome, I need a friendly face to talk to,' he thinks to himself.

Approaching Linzi again, he asks,"With all of that beautiful sketching, I see that you have eyes for details and have been observing the room. What is your take on him?" he asks as he surreptitiously side-nods towards Tartuccio.

Actaeon offers an honest smile at Linzi. He finds her very likable. Admiring her sketchbook, he says, ”Well, you surely have a knack for capturing the moment. A chronicle of this hopefully historic event is an excellent idea, and you seem perfect for the task.”

He keeps his smile, but slowly his mind goes to darker places, ’I hope we both survive so I can read it some day, Little One.’

After a short, but pleasant, conversion with the Halfling, Actaeon sits to enjoy the meal. As he eats, he attempts to observe the individuals around him. One, in particular, is Tartuccio with his confident demeanor and noble dress. Actaeon studies him most of all. ’As Ma would remind us, Keep an eye on your friends, but keep two on your enemies.’

Shortly after the meal, Actaeon approaches the foppish Gnome, ”You seem to know a lot but have you been to the ’Stolen Lands’? I am from southern Rostland, as you may have already guessed, and it can be a harsh land. Are you ready to rough it in the wilderness?”

Discovery Check: Tartuccio / Knowledge: Nature w/ Studied Target: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 1 = 8

With a Success, Actaeon would like to know any of Tartuccio’s weaknesses.

Actaeon finishes another mug of mead as he watches the room. He notices a Halfling watching everybody else while she writes in a huge book. This intrigues him since he thinks that she would appear more at home at a college and moves closer to speak with her. "So, what are you writing about? Will you also be journeying into the Stolen Lands to fight off the bandits?"

Actaeon rolls his eyes at the foppish Gnome and attempts to ignore him. Biting deep into a roast chicken leg, he smiles at Ludi and looks around the room to listen in on any conversation.

What are some of the NPC's talking about or how are they behaving? How are they interacting with each other? Trying to gauge demeanor and potential topics of conversation.

Actaeon's tongue gets tied with Amiri's brashness. 'Flirting? I wouldn't even know how to . . . '

His thoughts fade when Ludi interjects and provides Amiri with a history lesson. He smiles and nods his head at his sister. 'I remember Ma and Pa's lessons too. Never knew why they were important, but I think I understand now.'

He does agree with the Amiri though. He is hungry and is wondering what the hold up is. He finishes his mug of mead and stands to pour himself another. He raises his mug of liquid courage and speaks to the others around him, "Well, I am in full support of Jamandi Aldori and a free and independent Rostland. And to also be rid of the bandits plaguing the land."

After a moment he realizes what he just said to a group of strangers and slowly lowers himself back to his seat. 'I need to get some food in me soon. This mead is getting the best of me'. He turns his head to Ludi and gives her an awkward, buzzed smile.

Actaeon is overwhelmed with the grandeur of the estate and the gathering of the noble-born around him. To ease his tension, he pours himself some mead and swirls the mug in his hand. He stares down at the honeyed-wine and breathes in its deep aromas. ’Hmmm, smells like home. I wonder if this is some of Da’s honey.’ He looks over at his sister and smiles. ”Would you like some mead, Ludi?”

While enjoying the drink, Actaeon finds comfort in the warmth of the fire, the fanciful woodland murals along the walls, and the amazing smells coming from the highly-anticipated meal. His smile only breaks when he notices a Gnome giving him the stink-eye. ’What’s his deal? Hopefully Ludi and I do not get paired with him.’

He looks away from the Gnome and his eyes fall on a woman who must be Kellid. He recalls a simple greeting that his mother taught him. Lifting his mug and speaking in Hallit he says, ”Strength to you!”

When Emerald introduces herself, he recognizes her family name. 'A Barony in Brevoy, I believe. Do I call her Baroness? Use a different title?' Luckily, before Actaeon can embarrass himself, Maegar Varn introduces himself to her.

After several days of traveling while eating rations and small game, Actaeon finds himself and his sister sitting at a long table with a bunch of strangers. His stomach grumbles from the journey and he eyes his sister and whispers to her, "Ludi, you sure about this?"

He attempts to surreptitiously look around the great hall at the others gathered with him. To his left is a pretty woman he assumes is a few years older than him. She seems to carry herself like a noble. He catches a glance of a whittled pendant of Erastil on a man dressed like a farmer sitting across from him. He offers the man a nod and smile. To the man's left is a cloaked man, his pale skin barely showing through the shadows of his hood.

In an unsteady voice, he speaks softly to these people around him, "Greetings, my name is Actaeon."

Below is a list of the loot. Double-check, I could have missed something.

321 SP

205 GP

silver earings worth 150 gp

wooden music box 90 gp

3 crates of furs & hides (each worth 50 gp)

8 bottles full bottles of a potent greenish herbal liquid in a polished wooden case

3 longswords, 3 longbows, 3 quivers of arrows, 4 daggers

studded leather

2 masterwork handaxes

potion CLW

Not sure if we could could carry all of this back without use of the cart. I guess we could abandon the crates and stack the furs and hides.

Split the gold evenly?

Actaeon would be eyeing up one of the handaxes, but he already obtained the MW bow. Actaeon would also take any unclaimed quivers of arrows.

Since we are going back in time, should we add these goodies to our characters now? For instance, Actaeon will still have his old longbow instead of the MW bow that he now carries.

Actaeon grimaces, scrunching his forehead in the process, at his sister’s statement.

He nods to Emerald. ”Agreed, a full assault on a fort would not be a good idea. I think my main concern is letting these four hunters get to the fort and warn this Staglord. Chances are good that our presence is still unknown. If this camp is the only one stealing from Oleg and Svetlana, we can avoid alerting a bigger force that may attack the outpost. At most, we should make this camp look abandoned, instead of attacked, to lower suspicion.”

Actaeon looks around the camp, searching for the best place to hide the bodies and make the place look abandoned. Then he states a thought, ”I wonder if Kressle has any information on her.”

”If we are to find more allies, maybe Oleg would be a good person to ask where to start. I would think that he is familiar with the terrain and has regular customers that might be capable and interested in ending the reign of this Staglord. If we head back to Oleg’s, we should take as much of this stuff that we can carry. Most of it was probably stolen from him anyway.”

Actaeon will search the bodies for maps or other clues of where this fort may be. He will also attempt to make the camp look abandoned.

Actaeon feels some remorse, knowing that the bandit must die. ’Why do I feel this way? I have had no trouble slaughtering the other bandits that were raiding my home. They deserved it. Is this one any different? He hurt those kind folks at the outpost.’

He tries to distance himself and focus on the camp, but he cannot help but listen to Ludevine when she speaks to the bandit. ’How does Ludi know this forest? What is she talking about with these whispers? She has never been here before. Maybe we should have just stayed on the farm. Where I can protect her. This place is much bigger than her or I.’

He is brought out of his thoughts as Ludi approaches, Ludi, you doing alright? I miss home.”

After his conversation with Ludi and Emerald executes the last bandit, Actaeon approaches the group, ”He,” nudging a chin towards the executed bandit, "mentioned that four more are still out there hunting. They could return at any moment. We should prepare to ambush them or prepare to follow them. Ambushing them and taking them out makes the most sense to me to dwindle their numbers. We should be able to track their movements enough back to this Stag Lord and his fort. Should we gather our horses and come up with a plan?”

Sorry for the delay. Work was busy, but I also had a case of Phillies Fever. Although they lost, it was a fun post-season.

GM, is the cart in good condition? I am assuming that we can pull it with some horses. Also, are there tracks (cart ruts, flattened earth from horses and boots) leading from the camp, possibly leading to the fort? If allowed, Actaeon will take 20 to search for tracks.

Ludivine Pythanus wrote:

"Do you think they will kill him?"

Actaeon looks at his sister and shrugs. Speaking softly, ”This man chose banditry over community. He deserves to die for that alone. Whether he has committed atrocities already, his character tells me that he will do what is easy and what serves his own purpose at any given time. Can we let a man like that walk free? He can breathe for now though. He might have information that we need.” Actaeon presses his lips together, making the right side of his mouth scrunch upward in consternation before he continues. ”While I believe this man deserves to die, I find myself asking if I can be the executioner. Combat is one thing, but this man is now basically helpless. Can he repent? Does he have the qualities of a man deep inside that can still benefit community?” He looks over at his sister and shrugs again. ”Let’s first see if he is being truthful. If he is lying, the man will die soon.” Acteon turns to the business at hand and searches the camp, guided by what the captured bandit has told him.

Regarding prisoners: I am still trying to figure out Actaeon. I think at this point in the game, given his backstory, he would just kill the bandit and be done with it. I would like to show growth in the character, but I am just not sure if it is too early in the game for such growth. Being young and growing up in a tight knit community, might have him looking to his elders for advice and guidance, but after what he has seen, there is very little gray area at this point in his life. He wants all bandits dead, plain and simple.

Actaeon gives a sigh of relief when he sees Ludi wave at him through the forest. Still holding the loose bowstring and eyeing the bandit leaning against the tree, Actaeon considers the condition that the bandit is in and the information he is providing.

At odds on what to do next, he listens intently to Emerald’s argument. Six months ago, he would have just killed this bandit for his life choices. ’Can this bandit repent? Is it not too late for him to become a contributor to his community?’

”Before we decide his fate, let’s see if he’s being truthful to us.”

Acteon considers what the bandit said about the cart and the west platform, ’Is he telling the truth, or is the platform trapped instead?’

GM, not sure if you want to use my previous Perception Check or roll behind the screen Perception Checks to specifically look for traps under the tarp on the cart and the west platform. I’ll post 2 Perception Checks in a Spoiler below. Feel free to ignore these, use these, or roll your own.

Actaeon keeps his bow ready as the bandit lowers himself from the tree. Once the bandit reaches the ground, Actaeon orders, ”Face the tree, hands behind your back, and get on your knees.”

Keeping an eye on the bandit to see if he complies, Actaeon walks over to the discarded bow and unstrings it. He looks over at Sirinus and holds up the bow string. ”I think this will work. Watch him while I bind his hands.”

Actaeon moves closer to the bandit, ”Make any moves, and I’ll slit your throat. Got it?”

While binding the bandit, Actaeon turns his head to peer through the forest, Ludi, Emerald, you both OK?”

Once the bandit is secure, Acteon will look over the bandits, the camp, and the cart.

I am a big fan of the computer game and would welcome elements and NPC's from the game.

I am fine either way. My suggestion would be to let's have this current battle play out and see how long it takes us.

Even if shipping starts in September, your order may not arrive in your hands until late September or possibly October depending on the warehouse and what type of shipping you selected. Then you'll need time to review the changes and decide what you would like to implement.

It really comes down to how long do you want to wait. I plan on being here when you are ready.

While I am here, I'll offer a quick update on Azlant's status. I do want to get things going again. (hopefully, you all do too) Work has been sucking a lot of my time and energy. Some of my health issues have resurfaced, and I am recognizing that many are due to the stress and long hours at work. I am making some progress at work and do feel my motivation coming back. Hopefully, I'll start posting again soon.

I went back and forth a few times until I read the rules provided and considered the graph. I am thinking Cover (+4) is the right call, IMO.

Looking at the graph provided by Emerald (thank you for taking the time), the line-of-sight would most-likely be impeded by the tree. If we consider the tree having a diameter of 5 feet (since it takes up a 5 foot space), it would cover more that 1/2 of a standing medium-sized Sirinus.

That said, with such a colorful description of the successful attack provided by Sirinus for character development, I think a fair compromise would be a reduced damage count down to 2 HP.

Just thoughts and my 2 cents.

But when it comes down to it, the GM's call is final.

I moved the tokens around on the map. If we are going to have Ludivine focus on the ground troops with her spell, I say we cross the river in a different spot. (assuming there are no sentries in that direction and we all pass our stealth checks - DC is probably higher since Actaeon already failed once). I put Sirinus closer to the sentry to put him to sleep. I have Hadin and Actaeon sandwiching Ludivine to protect her. Since Emerald is mounted, I have her farther back to charge in.

I am not crazy about this. Too many things need to go right IMO.

If we come in from the east and focus on the sentry first with Sirinus approaching. We put him to sleep. Actaeon climbs up and either binds him or slits his throat. Actaeon can stay in the tree stand while Ludivine moves forward (maybe with Hadin) and uses her spell to draw the ground troops. Thoughts?

Actaeon looks skeptically at his sister, "Ludi, how did you learn to do that?"

"A distraction by Ludi along with your sleep spell Sirinus sounds like the way to go. If we can quickly take out the bowman in the tree, I can pepper the others with arrows while Emerald and Hadin meet them in melee."

Acteon slows as he reaches his companions. While catching his breath, he admonishes himself several times. ”Three of them!” he spouts out between breaths. "I saw three."

As his breath slows, Acteon realizes that they could be coming and turns in the direction he came with an arrow drawn.

”Didn’t get a great look. Totally missed the bandit in the tree until it was almost too late,” he shakes his head in disappointment. ”There were three that I saw. The lookout in a tree and two more in a camp clearing. One was a woman. Maybe the one Svetlana mentioned. There was also a wagon and a campfire.”

He pauses for a moment to concentrate on the woods. ”I believe they only saw me though. I could easily just be a lone hunter that got spooked and ran, but I think that they will be on their guard for a bit no matter which way we approach. Could have more tree stands on the other side of the clearing too. Damn, I screwed up. Should have never let them see me coming. We could wait until dark and use their campfire against them, but I say we go now and get this over with. Maybe we follow the river south for a bit and approach from a different spot. Use their wagon for cover.” Acteon takes another few moments to scout about the woods. Satisfied, he takes the arrow from his bow and uses it to draw a makeshift map of the camp in the dirt. "The camp, at least what I saw of it, looks like this.”

Perception Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 (In case Acteon was followed. These dice really have it out against our young Slayer.)

Not sure how much Acteon saw of the full camp, but Acteon will do his best to recreate a map for tactical planning.

Actaeon whispers a curse as he realizes that he has been spotted. He knows that he is outmatched and quickly turns and runs back toward his companions, trying to weave in and out of the trees for cover.

Actaeon looks to the sky and sniffs the air for any smoke and wood fire smell and also keeps an eye near the river for signs of erosion, ground compaction, and raised rocks where bandits might gather water or areas where they might cross the river.

He’ll then dismount and stealthily move through the forest.

Actaeon frowns as his sister marks the graves with flowers and plants. He notices her dirty feet and wonders what she was doing while he was digging the graves. He does not say anything, but concern is written all over his wrinkled brow.

After breakfast, Actaeon takes some practice shots with his new bow. He smiles as an arrow digs deep into a hay bale, ”This will bring them some pain,” he says quietly to himself.

After getting the feel of his new bow, Actaeon moves on to check out the horses. He looks for the swiftest one available and offers it some food while he starts to brush the horse to gain rapport. ”I think that I will name you Chiron.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------

Once everyone is ready to leave the outpost, Actaeon takes the lead, looking for the path the bandits took to get to the outpost. With bow in hand, he attempts to blend into his surroundings while keeping an eye out for threats.

Actaeon stands on the palisade wall and watches the bandits hang there. After several minutes, he cuts the ropes and allows the bodies to drop. Making his way back to the ground, Actaeon turns to Sirinus, ’You’ll have some time to study your book.” Then he turns to Oleg, ”You got some shovels in the barn?”

After the task of locating a suitable spot, digging the holes, and dragging the bodies for burial, Actaeon takes Oleg up on his offer of breakfast. During the meal he suggests, ”Let’s take the fight to them. We should be able to track the way they came. Once we find them, we can scope out the camp and discuss our plan of attack. Any thoughts?”

Comp. Longbow, arrows, shortsword, and a horse if there are no objections. I agree with Hadin to split the gold and rations. I would suggest that our melee fighters take the 2 CLW and Shield of Faith potions. That leaves 115 GP and 8 days of rations to split, I believe.

Interrogation scenes can get messy if you're playing an evil character. I believe that Actaeon would want these two hung for their crimes, but he is not going to perform to any kind of torture. We have a lead of where the camp is. I say we come to a consensus of what to do with these two, then make preparations to advance the story.

Sorry for the delay in posting. Last week was a bear at work. I intended to catch up over the weekend, but I decided to test out some new rain gear. We got a pretty good soaking rain over the weekend, and I decided to test out my new gear and practice setting my tent in the rain. It has been a while for that. I will be away the next few days hiking again, and it looks like I will have some amazing spring weather to walk in.

Happy Trails!

Actaeon stands there in stunned silence, mouth agape, with his sister talking about the rendering of souls and their terrible hunger. ’What is happening to my sister?’

Actaeon slowly closes his mouth as he pays attention to the questioning and the bandits’ answers. ’Stag Lorg. He must be the new power giving the bandits strength to raid southern Rostland again. He must be stopped!’

Finally Actaeon speaks his mind, ”I say we hang these two for their banditry and be done with them. They see no wrong-doing in their actions, and as Emerald has pointed out, this is what our Charter demands of us.” He looks over at Hadin, ”They will not repent, and we cannot allow them to walk away to commit more atrocities.” Actaeon then looks over at Sirinus to see if he supports or disagrees with this decision.

Assuming Actaeon found something to impair their vision . . .

”Wake up, you filth!” Actaeon growls. ”Your leader is dead, and I want to see you hung for your crimes. My brothers-in-arms think you might have useful information and should be spared. Answer my questions . . truthfully, and maybe you’ll live long enough to repent.”

Actaeon pauses and circles the bandits, allowing them to hear his footsteps. ” Where is your camp? How many of your ilk will we find there? Who is leading your rabble? “

Actaeon looks to his charter companions to see if they have questions of their own.

LOL my awesome rolls strike again. Anybody have some ranks in Intimidate? Actaeon is about as scary as a puppy.

Actaeon would be very happy with the comp. longbow, additional arrows, and a horse. If there are no objections.

After ensuring that the bindings are secure, Actaeon turns to the team, "Should I wake them up?"

While binding them, Actaeon looks to Oleg on an answer to Sirinus's question regarding the sleeping bandits.

Actaeon nods to Emerald as he moves toward the sleeping bandits. "Is there rope in the stables? We should tie them up before they wake. They might have information we could use. We can always use the rope later to hang them for their crimes."

Actaeon keeps an arrow notched just in case either wakes up.

In-person game tomorrow. I’ll post now with the assumption that the leader does not intend to surrender and will most likely attack Actaeon.

Actaeon sneers at the bandit leader as he threatens Oleg. Studying his movements, he draws back another arrow and shoots.
