I'm going to run my first session of Pathfinder with a group in a few weeks. I just wanted to clarify how hit points are determined. The only elusive explanation in the handbook says:
Standard: Maximum hit points for 1st level plus your
Constitution modifier and any other bonuses.
Is this taken to mean the maximum possible result of the class' hit die (for example, if it's a d12, 12 starting hp), plus constitution modifier (so if it's +2, then it becomes 14 starting hp)? Then each time the character levels up, does one roll a die (as determined by the hit die) and add the result on to their HP permanently? Are there any non-random ways of gaining HP - I'd feel pretty cheated if I levelled up and only got 1 extra HP because of a bad roll.
When used in multiple, your number of hit dice keep track of what your culumative levels are across classes. Yes?
Lastly, with racial bonuses to ability scores, are they added to the base (eg. +2 to 10 strength = 12 strength) or to the modifier? If it's added to the base, then does the modifier change to reflect this?
Thanks for the help. I've searched, but want to ensure that I'm understanding correctly.
