About the Neogi.... or should I say... Skeksi?

I've been saying this for ages amongst my local groups:

D&D's Neogi remind me an awful lot of the Skeksi. Hmmm... creepy, long-faced, gnarled, spindly-limbed, hissing, wheedling slavers who control giant armored bug brutes (Umber-Hulks for the Neogi, the big beetle-things for the Skeksi,) can enslave the wills of their captives, and drain their life-force for its vital energies.

Anyone else thinking they're a bit too similar for coincidence but me?

Scarab Sages

Good point. I always wondered why Neogi were some of my favorite.

I've never heard of a skeksi- can you please elucidate?

They're the evil vulture-like creatures from the 198? Jim Henson movie the Dark Crystal.

Oh. Well, as I've (obviously) never seen it... carry on....

Get to it man! Go forth and watch The Dark Crystal!

Kids these days, no sense of history. Prolly seen all the Harry potter movies, but Dark Crystal somehow slips through the cracks. Please tell me you've at least seen Willow? ;)

Once. And I've only seen the Harry Potter movies through some of my cousins, who are around 10. :)

For the benifit of the Woefully uninitiated, this is a Skeskis.

And... I apologize about my bbpost title, only just now realized Skeksis was singular as well as plural. n.n;

You can buy the extended, delux collectors edition on DVD now! :D I wants it!

Scarab Sages

I know I've mentioned this before, but the story was going around that the Henson company was making a sequel.

"Crystal bats fly! Search the land. Search the water. Search the sky."

Well, if the Neogi remind you of Skeksi what do think about Nagpa of old Mystara setting (that saw an update in Dragon #339), they basicly are Skeksi with serial numbers filed off.

I might possibly explode from a joy overload if that happens! :D

And dont forget to watch the "Making of. . ." Documentary on the DVD. Since it goes into Jim Henson's studio, its one of the best "making of" documentaries ever.

Seriously Saern, this is a MUST SEE movie for any gamer. I can't believe you've never seen it.

My parents got me a geode when I was a kid, and I used that thing to recreate the final scene of The Dark Crystal like, every day, for months on end. It was sweet.

Dorky, but sweet.

Now I believe it is my turn to plead ignorant. I know little of the old setting of Mystara. I have the 2nd edition Monster Compendium from it kicking around somewhere, but it's been ages since I've read it, and I don't have that issue of Dragon.

If the Nagpa read as Skeksis by appearance, I think that the Neogi read as Skeksis by intent.

If the Nagpa have the rest of the Skeksis traits as well... I can only guess D&D was 'bolder' about borrowing ideas wholecloth once upon a time.

There's no way you've never seen this movie. Please, for the love of all things holy, rent it for 99 pennies at BlockBuster, you will not regret it.
