The Mechanics Behind the Comics

The final issue of Pathfinder: Hollow Mountain releases today, written by yours truly and drawn by the illustrious Sean Izaakse! Can Pathfinder's most heroic and villainous iconics overcome their differences long enough to defeat the demonic Castellan? Will Ezren teach Seltyiel the true value of friendship? Will Oloch and Valeros finally kiss? There's only one way to find out, and it's hitting your local comics shop as we speak!

It's been a blast writing this series with Erik and Wes, and while all three of us worked closely together to chart out the storyline and character arcs, it was extra fun to get to write the first and last issues—both setting the stage and then tying up all the loose threads. But writing a Pathfinder comic isn't all fun and games—or rather, the games aren't all fun. A lot of work goes into making sure that everything the characters do in the comics fits within the game rules and character abilities, and the review board of me, Wes, Erik, and Jacobs is merciless when it comes to making comic authors toe the line.

This issue in particular has a lot of magic flying around—so much so that Wes suggested I take a page of the raw script and post it up here for you to see what goes on behind the scenes. So if you've ever wondered what a comic script looks like, here's an example! (I guess I should add a spoiler warning, but this particular page was chosen to avoid revealing too much. Unless you consider "folks beat the dickens out of other folks" to be a revealing too much.)

Hope you enjoy this peek behind the curtain, and thanks for supporting the comics!

Slightly spoiler-y, but still very cool to see the behind the scenes pieces coming together.

Good issue especially what the end of the comic seems to be hinting at.

Also any idea when the next series will be out?

Loving Melagaster's line, there.

You did a great job there, James!

Same goes to Eric and Wes.

Since you "real Pathfinder writers" took over the comics, it is much better in terms of story and i have been noticing the accurate spellcasting since issue #1 of Hollow Mountain.

I hope there will be more?!

There will definitely be more. :D

I've enjoyed Hollow Mountain but I think character development/arcs have stalled or gone backwards (Valeros, for instance, has definitely regressed) sonce Zub left the line.

I also thought issue 5 was pretty lara-croft-inflating-boobs, which was pretty lame.

I'm actually really curious about this. Where did you feel Valeros was heading, such that you now feel he's regressed?

It felt like he was maturing (not suddenly turning into a philosopher, but maturing). It was nicely gradual and involved some rueful admissions on his part. Aslo, he had a kind of horny side that was fading.

Then in Origins he was the same in Sheila's office as he was in the backstory and he has stayed at that level in Hollow Mountain.

Obviously, that's just how it seems to me.

I guess I saw him as on an arc where he would eventually (maybe not by now, but eventually) help someone to be cautious or thoughtful and there'd be a neat joke/moment with Seoni saying, "Valeros, what are you... oh, right. Yeah. Good."

And then there'd always be the option for circumstances to send him back into his old ways which would be dramatic and engaging.
