Itka Biklest |
Does this team want to focus on baking the creatures or manipulating the Eternity Arch?
I'm imagining Itka with a baker's hat and a frilly apron, baking dino haunches. Frightful!
"Hmp!" Itka agrees and begins hobbling toward the Arch.
Emmanuel Holysmith |
"Okay, let's fix the arch. But as soon as we finish I wanna ride that big lizard thing. And put freakin' magic beams on its head. I'll be a Dino Rider!"
GM Super Zero |
Ah... that should have said "battling."
You can take time to Treat Wounds and Refocus between Waves, although I don't think you needed it this time.
To seal the rifts, the Pathfinders must connect with the Eternity Arch, attune to it, and then manipulate the arch into sealing the rifts.
Connecting to the Arch just requires touching it... although the energy flowing through it might hurt.
One Interact action and a Will save. A failure will result in damage but won't prevent connecting.
Attuning might be a little more difficult and will require focus.
One action and a Fortitude save.
All PCs' turns.
Gruntarr
Itka
Cassandra

Kamil
Cassandra Thaumaturge |
Cassandra steps up to the Arch and focuses her will as she reaches out to touch it.
Will save: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (10) + 15 = 25, save becomes a crit
Fortitude save: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23
Emmanuel Holysmith |
"Alright, everyone. Remember our preparations. Think happy thoughts." Manny reaches out to the arch. "If anyone wants a bit of magical >Heroism< I can cast it on you."
- You each gain a +2 circumstance bonus on your first Will save.
Will Save: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 12 + 2 = 18 Manny is preoccupied with fantasies about his favorite after performance party.
The arch's energy surges forth through him. He hears a woman's voice bark at him to pay attention.
Fort Save: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17
Hero Point: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27
GM Super Zero |
Cassandra touches the Arch and attunes to it without any difficulty.
Manny also manages it, though the backlash of energy is painful.
Cassandra succeeds -> critically succeeds the basic Will save, though Manny fails it. Both succeed at the Fortitude save and successfully attune.
Manny takes mental damage: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 5, 6) = 19.
Itka Biklest |
Itka casts Guidance on herself, then reaches out to touch the Arch.
Will save (Connect to Arch): 1d20 + 13 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 13 + 1 = 29
The power thrumming through her causes her mind to spin with possibilities. Steeling herself, she attempts to attune to the Arch.
Fortitude save (Attune to Arch): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25
◆ Cast a spell, ◆ Connect to Arch, ◆ Attune to Arch

Okay, going to assume they want to attempt...
Gruntarr Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29 Success for half of mental damage: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 2, 6) = 18
Gruntarr Fort: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17 Failure, Clumsy 1
Kamil Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12 Critical failure for double mental damage: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 5, 5) = 20
Kamil Fort: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30 Successful attunement
GM Super Zero |
Gruntarr mostly resists the mental backlash and maintains contact, but he finds attuning to one time difficult. It feels as though he's been standing there for a very long time--and that he's aged decades.
Though feel free to re-roll that failed save.
Kamil suffers a brutal mental disruption--though he maintains contact with the arch, and finds the actual attuning simple enough.
Same.
But then, as the rest of the Pathfinders valiantly try to keep the large creatures away from those focusing on the arch...
Complication: 1d4 ⇒ 1
...the ground shakes violently.
Everyone must make a DC 22 Reflex save or be knocked prone. On a critical failure, you also lose contact with the Arch.
Anyone who isn't in contact with the Eternity Arch can touch it, though the Pathfinders now know this takes strength of Will.
That is, anyone who critically fails the Reflex save or who willingly lets go.
One Interact action, DC 25 basic will against 4d6 mental damage.
Anyone who is in contact, but not attuned must attune with the Eternity Arch before manipulating it to seal the rifts.
Kamil, and anyone who critically fails the Reflex save.
One action, DC 23 Fortitude save. On a success, attuned. On a failure, increase Clumsy rank by one (by two on a critical failure, maximum three) as you temporarily age.
Anyone who is attuned can start trying to close the rifts.
Two-action activity with the Concentrate and Manipulate trait. DC 22 Arcana, Nature, Occultism, Religion, or Thievery. On a success, gain Manipulation points. On a critical failure, lose connection.
Round 2: All PCs' turns.

Fortitude: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26
Thievery: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Kamil stays on his foot when the ground shakes violently and this time his mind is prepared to attune with the Arch.
Now attune with the Arch, he starts manipulating it to close the rift, using his knowledge of mechanisms on it.
Left turn, right turn twice then left 3 times... Got it!
◆ Attune to the Arch
◆◆ Manipulate the Arch
Cassandra Thaumaturge |
Reflex: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
Cassandra steadies herself and remains in contact with the Arch. Focusing her will she tries to close the rift.
Religion: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
Emmanuel Holysmith |
Manny's head spins.
Reflex: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35 But his footing is secure. So he holds on.
Fort: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28 It's a lot of energy, but he feels a connection and can attune himself to the arch. "Shylye, help me close this, eh?"
Religion: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32
He feels someone guiding his hand and making critical adjustments. "Thanks!"
Itka Biklest |
DC 22 Reflex vs. prone: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
"Hmp!" Itka just manages to maintain contact with the Arch as she stumbles. She stands up, making sure to continue touching the Arch at all times, and begins work on closing the rift.
Occultism DC 22: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (12) + 15 = 27
◆ Stand up, ◆◆ Close Rift
GM Super Zero |
If you're already attuned, you don't have to do it again before you can manipulate.
Itka, Cassandra, and Kamil all start to work at figuring out how to close the rifts. Manny is a natural! Between them, several of the smaller rifts are sealed.
Successes earn 1 point. Critical success earns 2 points.
Round 2: Gruntarr's turn. 5 Manipulation Points.

Itka (65/71, Attuned)
Gruntarr (73/92, Contact, Clumsy 1, DC 22 Reflex vs prone)

The other Pathfinders keep the dinosaurs away from the Arch for now.
No other crises in Round 3, so you can go ahead and take your next turns. as well.
Round 3: All PCs' turns.

Manny applies a bit of Guidance on himself before asking Shylye for more advice on how to seal the rifts.
Religion with Guidance: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 12 + 1 = 33
"Uh... yeah? That makes sense I think?" Manny seems to be taking advice from someone as he makes critical adjustments to the arch.
Itka Biklest |
It's raining nat 20's on Manny! Wow!
"Hmp." Itka notes Manny's adjustments and is inspired to incorporate aspects of them into her occult calculations. She casts a quick Guidance on herself to increase the odds of a smooth translation.
Occultism: 1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 15 + 1 = 25

Ocultism: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17
Ocultism reroll: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (15) + 16 = 31
GM Super Zero |
Gruntarr manages to attune to the Arch on his second attempt. He has some difficulty figuring out how to manipulate it, but once he's figured it out he makes quick progress.
The others (mostly Manny) have better luck. The smaller rifts are all sealed for the moment, the dinosaurs driven back to their own time.
Gruntarr succeeds at attuning, but his critically failed manipulation check breaks his connection and loses 1 manipulation point and his rerolled manipulation check earns another point for a total of 6.
Manny critically succeeds in round 3, and everyone else succeeds. That's 11 out of 10, so I'll report another Wave success.
With things calming down, the Pathfinders can have a moment's respite.
The PCs can take time to Treat Wounds, Refocus, or Repair equipment in between encounters.
After taking some time, dozens of strange and twisted quadrupeds emerge from the corners of the chamber, with oversized eyes and lolling tongues. “Hounds of Tindalos! These are the creatures that pursued Heraxia!” Ashasar exclaims. “They’ll weaken away from angles!”
Sparks fly from the Eternity Arch, sending bolts of lightning streaking across the chamber. “That thing is overloading!” Eando Kline shouts. “We need to stabilize it somehow!”
Once again, squads of Pathfinders move to engage both emerging problems.
Will this team decide to battle the hounds of Tindalos or to stabilize the Eternity Arch?
Emmanuel Holysmith |
"Sweet. Thanks Shylye." Manny watches the smaller rifts close. "I think Kamil needs more help than I do."
Soothe 3rd Rank on Kamil: 3d10 + 12 ⇒ (9, 5, 2) + 12 = 28
Soothe 2nd Rank on Manny: 2d10 + 8 ⇒ (4, 6) + 8 = 18

"I should be fine now. Cassandra, can you offer Kamil some ale from your chalice?"
He turns to his teammates. "Maybe we should battle the hounds of Tindalos. We already did a lot of stabilization."
Kamil Durus |
Thanks! The backlash from the Arch was something I wasn't prepared off!
Says Kamil when his comrades heal him.
He casts False Life again on himself and says

Cassandra Thaumaturge |
Cassandra does indeed offer Kamil a glug from her Chalice.
Kamil regains 21HP and the Chalice refills as others are refousing etc.
Cassandra examines the nearest Hound (no 3).
Exploit Vulnerability
Esoteric Lore: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (17) + 17 = 34
Success counts as a RK
Success You recall an important fact about the creature, learning its highest weakness (or one of its highest weaknesses, if it has multiple with the same value) but not its other weaknesses, resistances, or immunities. You can exploit either the creature's mortal weakness or personal antithesis. Your unarmed and weapon Strikes against the creature also become magical if they weren't already.
Failure Failing to recall a salient weakness about the creature, you instead attempt to exploit a more personal vulnerability. You can exploit only the creature's personal antithesis. Your unarmed and weapon Strikes against the creature also become magical if they weren't already.
Critical Failure You couldn't remember the right object to use and become distracted while you rummage through your esoterica. You become flat-footed until the beginning of your next turn.
She then moves forward to present herself as a target and casts Shield.
Retributive Strike: My ally gain Resist 9 All against the triggering attack.
Implement Interruption: Only works against my Exploited target, triggers on concentrate, manipulate or move actions.
In general Cassandra will prioritise using Retributive Strike rather than Implement Interruption.

Damage, Str, IE, WS: 2d6 + 4 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3) + 4 + 4 + 2 = 17
Mortal Weakness adds the Weakness value to each damage roll. Personal Antithesis adds +5 damage to each damage roll.
A critical hit forces a DC21 Fortitude save or the target is knocked prone
GM Super Zero |
Critical Success!
Lean and athirst, the hounds of Tindalos are drawn to those who tamper with the flow of time, travel through time, or use magic or rare alchemical drugs to send their thoughts or perceptions back or forward in time.
Cassandra notes that they are immune to being controlled and to emotion effects, and that they are resistant to mental, poison, and physical damage (10 each).
They don't have any particular vulnerabilities that she can particularly exploit, but as creatures of space and time they do have a rather unusual weakness--a vulnerability to curved spaces.
She also knows that targeting their Otherworldly Mind with mental effects can be dangerous.
Gruntarr's turn.
Initiative:
Cassandra (78/78, shield)
Gruntarr (92/92)

GM Super Zero |
The quickest of the hounds focuses for a moment, then seems to move faster as a result of its time-warping magic. It bounds forward--and disappears, only to reappear from the 90-degree angle between the nearby pillar and the floor.
Its gaze falls on the Pathfinders, who find its start tearing into them. Literally.

Cassandra's mace grazes the creature harmlessly as she protects Gruntarr. Pressing it from both sides, it's a little easier to hit. She does so twice.
Cassandra's Retributive Strike is a 24, which misses. 24 does hit their Off-Guard AC, so both flanking attacks hit. Your weakness and its resistance to physical both apply, and the resistance is higher so you lose a bit of the damage.
The injured hound glares at Cassandra, casting its time-warping spell towards her. It makes a sound that might be words, though it just sounds like cursing. It doesn't step away from its pillar though, turning and tearing at Gruntarr. Cassandra viciously punishes it, but it tears into Gruntarr almost as viciously.

◆ Strike Jaws: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (3) + 17 = 20, ◆ Strike Claw: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17

A critical hit forces a DC21 Fortitude save or the target is knocked prone
Retributive Strike: My ally gain Resist 9 All against the triggering attack.
Implement Interruption: Only works against my Exploited target, triggers on concentrate, manipulate or move actions.
In general Cassandra will prioritise using Retributive Strike rather than Implement Interruption.

Pity all of my prepared spells deal either physical or mental damage.
"Hmp." Shaking off the hound's slow spell, Itka casts Guidance on herself, then casts Malicious Shadow on the orange hound. Its shadow warps and writhes, stretching into a fat tentacle that takes a mighty swing at its erstwhile master.
Malicious Shadow, Guidance: 1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 15 + 1 = 25
Bludgeoning damage: 3d10 + 4 ⇒ (6, 3, 7) + 4 = 20

Itka Fort: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31 Itka takes half of slashing damage: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 3, 2) = 11
Cassandra hits the wounded hound twice. Smoke leaks from its tail and mouth, along with some kind of dark liquid as its breathing grows ragged.
Itka hits the other one with its own shadow, which is also very impressive.
The wounded one snaps at Gruntar and bites him. Cassandra is able to protect him, but her mace doesn't find its mark this time. The hound fades from sight.

"Huh, where did that one go?" Manny looks around. "Gabe, do you see 'em?"
"My sight relies on your own, Brother. Otherwise I would violate my Oath."
Manny sighs. "Fine. Alright, everyone. Hang tight!" He hovers back towards the raised platform.
