Entry Eleven: The track down the Sellen River was unbearable. Although Captain Shearwart did his best to accommodate our clergy, the trip was tedious. Luckily, we didn’t encounter any of the river patrols that we thought might come across our path. Once we reach Cassomir, we should be boarding a sea vessel large enough to accommodate our trip to Korvosa. We haven’t heard anything from our contacts from that regen for quite some time but the shipping lanes in that area are flush with potential. I suspect, after greasing the wheel a bit, we can pick up a few extra girls Korvosa. After resupplying, we will head to Magnimar, where Jonavan has arranged for four new girls. The pickup should be smooth, considering the area is well off the beaten path. From there, we will head to Sandpoint and meet with Gidra. Her and her crew should have a solid number for us.

Entry Fourteen: We have brokered a deal with the curator of the Quarterfaux Archive’s Darrick Humphry. He heads one of Caliphas’s underground gangs, which governs the city’s sewer system. The oversized system should take us directly to the temple without having to navigate through the city with the girls.

Entry Twenty-Three: We have collected fourteen girls in total, which should be enough to justify this trip. Adding these girls to our total should please Lord Eastabon. Assuming he doesn’t eliminate any of them, we should have enough to attempt the Gulden Ritual. If the ancient text is correct, this could free Tar-Baphon.

Entry Twenty-Seven: After investigating a disturbance that took place late last night, we have concluded that Sandpoint is aware of our operation. This could undermine our plans if they choose to pursue things further. I have decided, at no small expense, to attempt an old ritual called the awakening. If successful, it will leave Sandpoint with enough on their plate to keep them occupied for quite some time.

Entry Twenty-Seven: is the last entry within the journal.

Copied Ledger Note:
“Lost Minimum Wage Guy:” On the seventh page, second entry: The curator of the Quarterfaux Archive’s Museum, which is a subdivision of the archive, is requesting help locating a missing assistant. The contract offers round trip accommodations aboard a merchant vessel to Caliphas and four paid nights at a location of the group’s choice. The contract offers 1,000 gp on completion, with another 1,000 gp if the assistant is returned. The contract is sponsored by the Quarterfaux Archive. The listed contact is the museum’s curator Cynthia Nail.

“No More Squatters:” On the sixth page, first entry: A request to investigate and eliminate suspected cult activity north of Caliphas, in Ustalav, stands out as one of the higher paying contracts. The contract provides comfortable round-trip travel and accommodations at the Vodavani Lodge for the group’s entire stay. The contract offers 2,000 gp upon conformation of the cult and another 6,000 gp if they are eliminated. The sponsor for the contract is the Royal House of Ordranti. The listed contact is Lord Leopold the III.

"I don't know, Ionatan", Wayilant comments. "The religious connotations are lost on me. It may be arcane or draconic, like you said."

Wayilant (Perception & Appraise 10) The cleric moves into the room and begins inspecting the items on the alter, while the swashbuckler steps over to take a gander into the room. After inspecting the items Wayilant can discern that the flask is decorated with ornate detail. Miniature dragons in flight decorate the upper portion of the flask, while the bottom of the flask depicts people working fields. The base material of the flask appears to be a simple metal, while the detailed overlay is made of pewter. Because of the weight of the item, he can tell that the flask still has something in it. Comparing the item to a more mundane version, he isan't sure about its value. Much less the value of whatever might still be inside it. The whistle appears to be made of some odd transparent material. It resembles glass but seems much denser. In addition, the material has been worked into what looks like a small dragon curled up like a snail. The craftsmanship is exquisite, and it has a ruin stating “Azan-gund” etched onto its surface.

Dwarven “Azan-gund”:
Night Caller

The candle is obviously enchanted, which has allowed it to burn all these years.

Wayilant barley finishes his response to Ionatan when the sarcophagi swing open revealing their skeletal contents. The three to the south each contain a single skeleton, while the two to the north each contain two. Within seconds after they burst open, the skeletons animate.

One of the skeletons (Skeleton 7) takes a small adjustment out of its sarcophagus and then takes two lumbering clawed attacks at Ionatan. Luckily the mindless animation seems clumsy and it misses both attacks (Miss). A different skeleton (Skeleton 3) moves over to Wayilant and makes a single attempt to rake the cleric with its bony clawed hand. The attack strikes the cleric’s chest, but the chainmail does its job deflecting the blow (Miss).

Skeletons are the animated bones of the dead, brought to unlife through foul magic. While most skeletons are mindless automatons, they still possess an evil cunning imparted to them by their animating force—a cunning that allows them to wield weapons and wear armor.

Knowledge Religion DC 16:
Skeletons are resistant to all forms of physical attack except bludgeoning, which gives them a DR 5/bludgeoning.

Knowledge Religion DC 21:
You are very familiar with skeletons. The group receives a +1-circumstance bonus on attack and damage vs. skeletons for this fight.

Ionatan makes with some fancy footwork in an attempt to move past the skeleton in the doorway but fails in the process. The attempt opens him up to another heavy clawed attack from the undead. The claw is narrowly avoided (Miss) as it wishes past his head and slams into the doorframe. After failing to move past the skeleton, the swashbuckler thrusts his thin blade forward. The blade passes through the skeleton’s ribcage and manages to chip away a small piece of its spine (-1 hp).

With the situation building in the adjacent room, Bryndis decides to maneuver past Ionatan, (Move through threatened square DC 14) which she does without a problem. Then she decides to try and duck past the skeleton in the doorway. It would if you reached negative hit points. That said, don't forget the +1 temporary hp the group got from being well nourished for the day. It Doesn't seem like a lot, but at first level it could make a difference. As fare as the undead taking damage goes, if you were affected by bleed or being blood drained, I would say the adjacent undead would take 1 point of damage. In this case, you have been injured so the blood effect wouldn't apply.

Bryndís frowns at the irritating rat as she bisects it with her blade.

"Damned rat."

Rat 4 Fort Save (DC 14): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Somewhat annoyed by the large rat (Rat 4), Bryndis brings her oversized sword down into a deadly overhead swing. Her blade digs deep into the rat’s upper back. The rat flinches slightly before collapsing quietly into a heap (Hit -12 hp).

After watching the rat in front of him begin chocking (Rat 1), Dario brings his starknife into a downward strike. The blade hits true, severing the back of the rats neck (Hit -6 hp).

The last rat to emerge from the corridor’s darkness moves up and attempts to grab hold of Dario’s thigh. The rat’s filth covered teeth dig deep into the bard's flash leaving behind a thick saliva coating (Hit -3 hp).

While in a sickened condition, one of the two remaining rats (Rat 3) moves up and attempts to grab hold of Muziel. Even in its sickened state, the rodent manages to grab hold of the dwarf's gut. With little resistance, it sinks its sharp teeth deep into his stomach (Hit -1 hp / FORT save DC 11).

The green fog finally dissipates while Bryndis brings her heavy blade into a powerful downward swing. The blade catches the rodent in the center of its back, literally splitting it in two. The blow, being strong enough to send blood spraying across the full length of the room, coating parts of the fountain's front facing. Moments after the deadly blow, the last rat withdraws and skitters down the hall, towards the darkness.

Dario takes up a defensive position and then recasts his light spell, while Wayilant gathers a few things from the skeleton room and then heads over to the room’s door.

The healing waves from Wailant’s positive energy ripples through the room causing a small amount of gas in everyone’s stomach. The effect quickly turns from a slight amount of discomfort to an overwhelming feeling of wellbeing as everyone’s wounds begin to close up. (Heal +4 to everyone)

With the combat now over the room falls silent. Muziel now has a water skin full of the liquid from the fountain and Wayilant is currently holding the items from the skeleton room. (Please list those on your character sheets.)

Dario moves back towards the southbound corridor, lighting the area a bit further.

A: About ten feet down the corridor, heading south, a bend to the right and left open up. The bend to the right ends in a rough pile of debris, whereas the bend to the left ends at a wooden door.

B: Twenty foot further down the corridor a series of six wooden doors face each other in a row of three. Those doors appear to be slightly ajar and are labeled A-F. The cobbled stone floor continues down the entire length of the corridor and leads to an open doorless archway directly to the south. A moldy stench fills the area and layers of mostly undisturbed dust coat the surroundings. Throughout the corridor the sign of multiple Dire Rat tracks can be seen, along with a number of booted tracks both coming and going throughout the area.

Meepo, who has been cowering on one of the room’s corners finally comes out and joins Dario.

While the group reorganizes and recovers from the fight, Bryndís checks the edge of her sword with a frown and critical eye. After Muziel and Dario carefully inspect the area for traps, Dario opens the door. The light from his starknife pierces through the room’s inner darkness, reveling an empty room with debris riddles across the floor. Aside from a single door heading south, there is nothing of interest in this room. After exposing the room, Muziel casts detect magic and scans it for magic. The detection reveals nothing of magical interest. After the group moves into the room, Dario and Muziel repeat the search process on the room’s Southern door. After completing a close inspection, Muziel points out a small leather thong tied to the door’s inner hinge. The thong leads deeper into the room and ends at to what looks like a small bell. Your best assumption is the bell is a warning device of some sort.

Dario looks back to the group and describes the situation. He explains that the thong is thin and could be cut, but there is a chance of ringing the bell during the process. He shrugs and then waits for the group to weigh in.

Dario's Disable Device:

Dario Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 9 - 2 = 16

Dario nods with understanding and begins working on the trap. Not having the proper tools available, he attempts to dislodge the thong using improvised items from his pack. (-2 to the attempt for improvised tools) Due to the limitations of using unreliable tools, the process takes slightly longer then preferred, so the group is stuck standing there watching for a good few minutes. Soon the results of his effort are revealed by the sound of the bell ringing in the next room. “S@%~!” Dario exclaims as he quickly jumps to his feet and swings open the door.

The 10-foot-wide hall is liberally strewn with sharp caltrops. The northern door is missing, but the room beyond is partially blocked by a roughly mortared 3- foot-high wall, complete with crenellations.

Almost immediately after the door swings open, small hurried movement can be seen in the distance. Eventually, two small heads pop up from behind the crenellations.

Knowledge Local DC 11:
The small three foot high, scrawny creatures are goblins. Goblins prefer to dwell in caves, amid large and dense thickets of thistles and brambles, or in structures built and then abandoned by others. Very few goblins have the drive to build structures of their own. Coastlines are favored, as goblins are quite fond of sifting through junk and flotsam in an unending quest to find treasures among the refuse of more civilized races.

Goblin hatred runs deep, and few things inspire their wrath more than gnomes (who have long fought against goblins), horses (who frighten goblins tremendously), and regular dogs (whom goblins regard as pale imitations of goblin dogs).

Goblins are also quite superstitious and treat magic with a fawning mixture of awe and fear. They have the habit of ascribing magic to the mundane as well, with fire and writing both taking on mystical power in goblin society. Fire is much loved by goblins for its capacity to wreak great destruction and because it doesn’t require size or strength to wield, but written words are hated. Goblins believe that writing steals words out of your head, and as a result of this belief, goblins are universally illiterate.

Goblins are voracious and can eat their body weight in food daily without growing fat. Goblin lairs always have numerous storerooms and larders. While they prefer human and gnome flesh, a goblin won’t turn down any food—except, perhaps, vegetables.

Knowledge Local DC 16:
These creatures don’t have any special defensive or offensive capability. They generally utilize crude weapons and armor and can simulate basic combat tactics. They are known to utilize fire as it inspires them in some weird way.

Knowledge Local DC 21:
You are very familiar with these little buggers. Because of your vast knowledge of their behavior, the group gets a temporary +1 to hit and damage against them for this encounter.

Acknowledging the fact that standing in the doorway is likely not the greatest idea, Dario moves off to the side of the room with the group.

In an extremely broken common, one of the goblins responds to Wayilant and Bryndis. "Mother not have any balls. I kill her long ago. We want no trouble with longshanks. We make peace. Bryndís arches an eyebrow at the dwarf's sudden turn to violence without consultation. It's not upsetting, Bryndís had been figuring things would take a turn toward bloodshed at some point. But, she has thought they'd at least get across the difficult space between their respective locations so the killing would be more convenient.

She doesn't jump into action, thinking the goblins will continue to stay where they are. Instead Bryndís goes back to considering the floor they have to cross.

"Has anyone seen a table down here anywhere? Or maybe something we can move in the same shape?" she asks.

"This is like a little siege that's inside. We need a machine to get us to their little wall without being hurt. If we have a big table, we can put it on its side and push it forward from behind. It will push the caltrops in front of it as we go, and we will have cover behind it."

While the group converses about the table, Muziel summons another acidic cloud over some of the goblins.

The goblins immediately begin cursing in their native language while they move away from the cloud. (-2 hp and Goblin 2 is sickened)

Goblin:
Graah, stooped caster! It burns! It burns! Move way! The cloud burns!

Goblin Saves:

Goblin 1 Fort Save (DC 14): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Goblin 2 Fort Save (DC 14): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Dario offers to assist in recovering the bench, as does Meepo. The three of you head back to the room where you discovered Meepo and recover the bench. This process takes about 3 rounds.

The goblins wait for the cloud to dissipate and then return to their posts. (Delayed)

How wide is that bench? It would do fine for sweeping the floor of caltrops, but I can't imagine it offers much cover while doing so?
