Agata |
Agata and Sweet Mawd Jr. are both already flying.
Zaarah Katsu |
Zaarah has overland flight up.
”Maybe we and Marta and scout around the lake and see what is going on?“ she asks innocently.
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
With a grimace, Marta replies quickly "Or just avoid the thing altogether. I'm envisioning a demonic monster the size of a castle rising out of the water and pulling us all under. Let's just fly around the dang thing."
Flint Firetoe |
Flint tries to organise the team to fly around the lake.
"Alright, Zaarah, Alie, Agata and Sweet Mawd Jr. why don't you start flying around the lake?"
"Theodric why don't you give both Marta and me a lift? You should be more than strong enough to carry both of us around the lake in one go."
That should do it and the party can stay together on the trip as well.
Alie Saechel |
Alie nods. ”Good suggestion! Let’s get to it, everyone,” Aliecalls out as she starts flying along the outskirts of the lake
Theodric de LaMontagne |
"Flint, Marta: are your backpacks solid or do you need a rope harness; if the latter pass me your rope and I'll make one in a pinch..."
Theodric then proceeds to lift both monks by either their backpack handle or via rope harness, whichever they so choose.
Flint Firetoe |
Flint passes Theodric a 50' length of silk rope which is already knotted.
"I would rather risk a rope than my Handy Haversack. There should be more than enough rope to carry both of us."
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
"Solid as a... ooof!" Handy haversack
The indignity of it all.
Zaarah Katsu |
Zaarah nods with a grin.
"Good, let us fly around it. Mesh and I are ready!" the Magus says.
GM Otha |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Sorry, doctor’s appointment this morning, work function this afternoon, and company coming in…will try to get a post up this evening…and just so I have it straight, Alie, Agata, & Zaarah flying, while Theodric flying while carrying Flint and Marta, right?
Agata |
Sweet Mawd (Agata's familiar) is also flying
Agata |
Btw, how long has it been since we broke camp (checking about whether various buff spells would still be active)?
Flint Firetoe |
@Agata - A total of 3 hours travelled today. I am keeping close track of time as I want my buffs to be constantly up as combat has a tendency to creep up on you in this place. :)
@GM Otha - That is right. Everyone is flying and Theodric is carrying Flint and Marta via rope harness. :)
GM Otha |
You enact your plan and take to the skies…
I’m assuming you’re going around to the left/west of the lake as it’s a little shorter distance-wise; how high are you flying?

Moonscar Jungle - Travel Map (Slide 2)
Strongly Chaos-Aligned and Evil-Aligned: Nonevil or nonchaotic creatures take a –2 circumstance penalty on all Intelligence-, Wisdom-, and Charisma-based checks in the Moonscar. This penalty stacks with itself for creatures that fall into both categories (-4).
Impeded Magic: To cast a spell or use a spell-like ability with the good or lawful descriptor, a caster must make a concentration check (DC 20 + the level of the spell).
Flint Firetoe |
That is fine with me but Flint will put on his Talisman of Beneficial Winds then. He trusts Theodric but something may happen in the air! :)
Flint is sure to swap out his magical jewellery before he is transported by air and he ensures that all of his equipment is suitably secured including his magical bow.
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
Higher would be better. 90' is not all that far for long range weapons. How about 200'?
Marta will have a potion of fly ready to go (i.e. in hand) just in case.
Flint Firetoe |
I think that the party needs Flint on the ground with his bow and the reflex save to avoid the poison is trivial for my character.
Flint reconsiders his decision and is going to risk going through the plant hazard by foot.
"Stay where I can see you and I will provide ranged support if you encounter any enemies in the air. Avoiding the poisonous plants should be an easy task for me."
"Feel free to borrow my rope to carry Marta if you like."
Flint changes back his magical jewellery and draws his bow (and organises his arrows) ready for any possible danger.
@GM Otha - I imagine that Flint should be able to keep pace with the party on foot as Overland Flight is only 40' speed. He can always cast Feather Step if you deem the terrain is difficult. Please let me know.
Flint Firetoe |
Flint coordinates his actions with the party leaving and casts Feather Step (from a scroll, automatically with UMD) on himself before attempting his trek on foot.
Reflex save, Target DC 25: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (15) + 25 = 40
@GM Otha - Feather Step from a scroll lasts 10 minutes and will allow him to ignore difficult terrain. I think that one scroll should probably last long enough but he can cast another one if you think that the trip will take a little longer.
GM Otha |
As Flint has a change of heart and decides to hood it, the rest of you take flight, circumventing the lake by going around to the left…
Once you ascend to about 60’, with Flint trying to cover you coming up from behind by foot, the lake to your right explodes in a fountain of water as a huge, monstrous abomination of a creature bursts forth from its watery depths! In addition to its wings, this immense, three-eyed frog-like creature rears up on powerful hind legs. In place of arms, four huge tentacles thrash and writhe…
If you make the above check, you can attempt the following check:
Winged Creature: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
Agata: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12; +4 if heightened awareness active, +2 if hunter’s blessing applies
Flint: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (5) + 24 = 29
Marta: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16; +4 if heightened awareness active, +2 if hunter’s blessing applies
Theodric: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Zaarah: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Alie: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Wasn’t expecting to get initiative there…running out to eat brunch, will post the creature’s attack when I get back…

Forgot the penalty but I preloaded the checks so that when her turn does come around he can tell me as it might affect my combat decisions. It might just be easier for the GM to apply that penalty from now on since it is so easy to forget. But since the edit window did not expire, I added it in.

Here is what you learn about this creature:
DR 10/magic; Immune electricity (partial), poison; Resist acid 10, cold 10, electricity 10, fire 10; SR 27; Weaknesses slowed by electricity
Special Attacks constrict (tentacle, 1d6+12), smite good, swallow whole (3d6+12 damage, AC 20, hp 21)

Flint Firetoe |
I just wanted to confirm my understanding of the rules before I post my character's actions. If my character were to activate his Unfettered Shirt with a command word as a standard action this round then the Freedom of Movement effect should automatically prevent the creature from pinning/swallowing or constricting my character next round.
@GM Otha - Your attacks look spot on to me. Ouch! Do you agree with my statement above about how Freedom of Movement works? :)
Sweet Mawd |
Sweet Mawd pops a scroll of Haste from her wrist sheath and activates it. Since it is a CL 5 scroll it is only active for 5 rounds and can only affect 5 characters: she'll exclude herself and Agata (presuming that everyone else is within 30'), so haste is now active for 5 rounds on Flint, Marta, Zaarah, Alie, and Theodoric. Alie, I hope this is ok with you since you've been doing the hasting, but I presume you've got more powerful things you can do with your turn and with this creature's SR, Mawd's other options won't be much use this fight. Then she will draw her wand of Cure Moderate Wounds.
Edit: since Flint has his own (free action) Haste, Sweet Mawd will include Agata in her casting of Haste.
Additional edit: I forgot that with the Planar penalty her UMD check on the scroll is not automatic:
UMD DC25, planar penalty: 1d20 + 24 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 24 - 2 = 25 Whew!
Flint Firetoe |
Flint activates his Unfettered Shirt by speaking a word of power. He then calls upon Irori for aid (Judgement: Protection: +2 sacred bonus to AC and Healing: Fast Healing 4) and clicks his boots of speed together for good measure.
Freedom of Movement is now in effect for Flint.
Standard action to activate Unfettered Shirt. It does not provoke and does not require concentration as it is activated by command word.
Swift action to start a Judgement. It does not provoke and does not require a concentration check as it is a supernatural ability.
Free action to activate boots of speed. It does not provoke and does not require a concentration check as it is a use activated item.
@Sweet Mawd - Just for future reference all the targets for a Haste spell must be within 30 feet of each other. You are good for this casting but you would not have been able to target Flint anyways. :)
Agata |
Agata swiftly sends a bolt of magic towards the creature.
Piercing Quickened Enervation
Ranged Touch attack: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19
Caster Level check vs SR 27 22, elf, piercing, spell perfection: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (8) + 21 = 29
Negative Levels: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Then Agata wiggles her eyebrows at the creature, attempting to bring it some bad luck.
Use Amplified Hex to increase the DC by 1 - giving up a Level 1 spell - Remove Sickness
Misfortune Hex - Will DC 30 negates (I'm not sure if the Planar penalty reduces this?) - failure means the creature rolls twice on all d20 rolls and takes the worse result for 3 rounds.
Then Agata laughs cruelly. Cackle to extend the duration of Misfortune to 4 rounds.
Neither Agata nor Sweet Mawd can fail their Fly checks to hover
Sweet Mawd |
@Sweet Mawd - Just for future reference all the targets for a Haste spell must be within 30 feet of each other. You are good for this casting but you would not have been able to target Flint anyways. :)
On the map it looks like everyone is within 30' of each other but it's hard to tell how much higher or lower anyone is...
Flint Firetoe |
You guys are 60 feet up in the air. The GM told us in the original monster post. :)
Zaarah Katsu |
Zaarah swiftly empowers her intelligent black blade “Mesh” and moves nearer to the creature but still beyond its reach and slumber hexes it.
Slumber dc 25 will save or asleep 15 rounds.
“Wow! This thing is ugly. Sleep well!!“
Agata |
You guys are 60 feet up in the air. The GM told us in the original monster post. :)
Ah, I missed that. Ok, in that case, instead of Cackling, Agata will retrieve her rod of Grasping Hexes to extend the range of her Misfortune hex. The rest of my turn still works as posted but the only difference is that if the creature fails its save vs Misfortune the duration is now 3 rounds, not 4.
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
Marta figures first thing is first. Knowing that the thing can grapple she casts a freedom of movement spell on herself and starts her judgment, granting herself a bonus to AC and damage.
Alie Saechel |
Upon hearing of the beast’s weakness to electricity, Alie pulls her rod of piercing and casts a spell, turning briefly sapphire colored as she shot a line of electricity from her mouth.
Cast Dragon’s Breath for blue dragon, electricity line.
Caster level check with rod of piercing makes DC 22 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (1) + 16 = 17
Using Fey bloodline power to reroll caster level check 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27
Electricity Damage 12d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 1, 4, 4, 2, 5, 4, 4, 2, 2) = 43
Reflex DC 24 for half damage
GM Otha |
While Flint frees himself and Marta preps, Agata inflicts a negative level on the beast…
Will vs Misfortune: 1d20 + 14 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 14 - 1 = 33
…but the abomination resists her misfortune hex…
Will vs Slumber1: 1d20 + 14 - 1 ⇒ (6) + 14 - 1 = 19
Will vs Slumber2: 1d20 + 14 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 14 - 1 = 31
…in addition to Zaarah’s sleep hex…
Alie zaps it with electrical dragon’s breath; while the creature is immune to electrical damage, it does noticeably slow it…
