GM Otha |
Welcome to the discussion thread for The Moonscar. Feel free to introduce yourselves, talk about your characters, and pretty much anything else, as we await the start of Gameday…
This session is full. The PCs are:
Alie Saechel
Mage of the Wyrmkin
Zaarah
miteke
Abraham Z
PDK
Y’all can dot and delete in the Gameplay thread at your leisure…
Theodric de LaMontagne |
PDK here, bringing Theodric on this one (melee tank). Thanks for running this Otha!
PS: I still need to update his stats to Level 17 but the current Level 15 stats can give you an idea of his abilities.
Abraham Z. |
Thanks for running this, GM Otha!
I've got three PCs available in tier and I thoroughly enjoy all of them so I'll decide based on our party composition.
Yuri is a level 15 superstitious Barbarian (chained) 12/Fighter 3. He rage cycles, has pounce, spell sunders, has reach 20', and wrecks havoc with come and get me.
Tsrvk is a level 15 Magus (Magus 14/Dawnflower Dervish Bard 1) who is also a melee type. He has the dimensional dervish feat chain for hopping around the battlefield.
Agata is a level 17 Witch with the usual array of hexes and spells. Squishy but lots of support.
I love all three of these characters and would be happy to play any of them.
GM Otha |
No worries. I remember Yuri from Tomb of the Iron Medusa. Didn’t he take something like 175 hp of damage during one epic fight then? I recall it was a lot but he weathered it well nonetheless…that’s by far the most damage I’ve ever rolled up in one fight as a GM, something just shy of 500 total IIRC but y’all persevered, won the fight, and everyone survived…
Any of those PCs sound excellent so whomever you prefer…
Alie Saechel |
Thanks for running for us, Otha.
Great to see so many of you that I’ve gamed with over the years!
I didn’t realize this was a Richard Pett adventure! Oh, we are in trouble, lol!
Zaarah Katsu |
Thanks a lot GM for inviting me!!
I have to level my character to 16 but am unfortunately on vacation so I will need another week. I hope that is fine?
Zaarah Katsu |
Ahh perfect!!
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
Inquisitor here. Master of the saving throw and buffing and an arithmetic nightmare. Squishy at the beginning of combat, but ramps up quickly, so don't kill everything the first round :)
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
Witches are a lot of fun, except when the enemies are immune to all your spells. I hate that. I see that you fully understand because you got lots of nice spells that are not mind based, with enervation by far your favorite :) No ST so Marta sure hopes you don't get mind controlled. Naaasty spell.
Flint Firetoe |
I will definitely be taking my Zen Archer/Inquisitor. There is a lot more shopping to do in between adventures and perhaps some minor tweaking on his level up to 17 but I see no reason not to dot in at this point.
Flint Firetoe |

I think that we have most of the bases covered but I strongly suggest that everyone pick up the bargain version of the Restoration scroll for 800 gold. There is generally a lot of ability drain and energy drain effects at this point and while it is unlikely to kill your character outright it is really annoying to limp around for an entire module down a temporary level or two or with a hefty penalty to an ability score.
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
What do you mean by bargain version?
I went for 2 Lesser Ankh Talisman. I'm with you about losing life levels, though it hurts slightly less since Marta has Deathless Spirit.
Flint Firetoe |
In terms of Restoration the less expensive version has a spell component cost of 100 gold vs 1000 gold for the version that removes permanent negative levels. In practice you generally acquire temporary negative levels that may become permanent after 24 hours if you fail your save.
In regards to the Ankh while it is a fun item (with a Force Punch kicker) it just does not provide the same level of protection as a Restoration spell. It does not heal multiple temporary negative levels, ability damage, ability drain or fatigue. All of these conditions can occur often at high levels.
At the end of the day it is your character so buy (or don't buy) what you like. :)
Theodric de LaMontagne |
Page 21 of the Pathfinder Society Guide says:
"Potions, Scrolls, and Wands
All potions, scrolls, wands, and other consumables are
made by clerics, druids, or wizards in Pathfinder Society
Roleplaying Guild play. The only exceptions to this are
spells that are not on the cleric, druid, or sorcerer/wizard
spell lists. For example, a scroll of lesser restoration must be
purchased as a 2nd-level scroll created by a cleric and can’t
be purchased as a 1st-level scroll created by a paladin. If a
spell is not on the cleric, druid, or sorcerer/wizard spell
list, move down the following hierarchy to determine
which class creates the consumable. Use the spell’s text
from the book in which it appears, instead of researching
classes that might have gained that spell on their list in a
later publication.
1) Bard
2) Paladin or Ranger
3) Psychic, Shaman, or Witch
4) Alchemist, Inquisitor, Magus, Mesmerist, Occultist,
Spiritualist, or Summoner
5) Bloodrager or Medium
If there are still multiple options for the spell’s level,
use the lowest level (for example, all scrolls of plane shift
are 5th-level scrolls made by clerics rather than 7th-level
scrolls made by wizards).
All potions, scrolls, and wands are available only at the
minimum caster level unless found at a higher caster level
on a Chronicle sheet. For the sake of simplicity, there is
no difference between an arcane, divine, or psychic scroll
or wand; thus, a bard and cleric can both use the same
scroll of cure moderate wounds.
Scrolls of spells of 7th level or higher are not available
for any characters below 12th level unless they appear on a
Chronicle sheet that character has earned."
Flint Firetoe |
The cost provided for the Restoration scroll is based on a Cleric producing the scroll. It is a 4th level spell and thus has a 700 gold base cost. You will need to add the cost of the material component for the spell as well to determine the price. It can be either 100 gold or 1000 gold additional depending on if you want it to be able to remove permanent negative levels or not. :)
Theodric de LaMontagne |
800gp is the correct price yes. I don't know why but for some reason I thought you were talking about a 'bloodrager restoration' lol.
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
Sure. Marta will buy one of those 800 gp versions. She also has a death ward scroll.
Theodric de LaMontagne |
You guys know when this is starting? I want to allow enough time to level up my guy to 17... it's probably the last time I'll level him up.
PS: will this be in PbP or VTT via Roll20? (if the latter, I'll need to transfer his stats into Roll20 as well; thanks!)
Flint Firetoe |

This game is PbP on this board. The game should start on September 11th so we all have plenty of time to update and scrutinise our character choices. :)
Theodric de LaMontagne |
Cool! that's awesome! GM Otha: I'm hoping you have a one post a day policy or something like that; some PbPs I've been in the last few years have slowed down to a crawl with some folks joining everything that moves then not checking on their games afterwards...
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
PFS games move pretty quickly. The fact that they are not long campaigns like APs helps, and then there is the fact that everyone here is a veteran. I doubt there will be an issue unless life happens.
But that is an important question. will you be botting tardy players and should we have bot instructions on our character sheet?
GM Otha |

This is a module and will run longer than a scenario, but much shorter than an AP book…
My general rule of thumb on posting for players is once a day during the week and once over the weekend. Real life comes first though so, if anything pops up, just let me know and we’ll work it out. As for me, I generally check on the thread in the morning, once or twice throughout the day, and at least once during the evening…I tend to post twice or more a day, depending on the rate the players post…
As for botting, I’d prefer you to have botting instructions as a guideline for me to follow. If you don’t, no worries, I’ll still bot you; I’ll try to stay true to the nature of your PC, won’t do anything suicidal, but will have you generally act in the best interest of the party. I don’t believe in delaying your PC as a bot action when the party’s in a pinch as it does nothing but hurt the party…
I’ll be on a cruise for 5 days in late September; I’ll have the streaming package though and I’ll be checking every morning and probably most nights before I hit the bed. It won’t be the first time I’ve posted in a PBP game on a cruise ship…
Theodric de LaMontagne |
GMing in style! I like it! well done Sir, well done! :)
GM Otha |
Just an FYI, got the slides done; you can reach 'em at the link at the top of the page, the link in my GM Header, or the link below:
At your leisure, check the init and perception blocks to make sure I've got the right values in there. Also, you can post a default marching order, if you wish as well...
Theodric de LaMontagne |
Whoa! time for me to level up Theodric!
When do we start?
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
Looks good. I added a suffix with conditional bonuses.
Zaarah Katsu |
I need to level as well.
Flint Firetoe |
@GM Otha - Thanks for putting up the slides.
What I love about having the stat blocks up for Initiative and Perception is that the players can go in and modify it themselves when they put up their buffs and all the GM has to do is copy and paste the formula set to the dice roller.
I recommend that players do this (for spells like Heightened Awareness or even Hunter's Blessing) when your spells are actively working and leave situational bonuses that do not often come up (like Stone Cunning for example) in the margins. It just makes it easier and clearer for everyone especially the GM who does not have to slow down the game (it is PbP after all) asking questions about your buffs.
In terms of marching order where do people want or need to be?
Theodric de LaMontagne |
Theodric de LaMontagne wrote:When do we start? You still have plenty of time, start date for Gameday is September 11th. We’ll probably start with intros a few days prior to that…
Ok thanks for letting me know, as I may have vacation plans the week before that. I'll get my character ready this week or next just in case.
Alie Saechel |
Alie is fine with being towards the back of the marching order. Looks like we’ve got a bunch of melee in this crew, which is great!
Flint Firetoe |
I guess the marching order will depend on our environment as well. If we spend any time navigating outside in the wilderness then my character will certainly be in front of the party possibly scouting with his excellent Survival, Perception and Stealth skills. With Dead Eye Lore up he does not even have to slow down to track or to travel in the wilderness so we should be able to move at a nice clip even when trying to find our way. :)
Looking at the map we might be spending a considerable amount of time travelling so players should be mindful of that as well and note that many of their buffs might not be always on. You can quickly run through a wand of Mage Armor for example if you use it every hour of the travelling day for days on end. Of course at this level we might be getting around at a quicker pace but this is just something to keep in mind. :)
In an urban or underground environment then my character can be the middle rank guarding the squishy arcane casters with everyone that wants to melee in the front rank.
Marta - A.K.A. Telmar So-Melnop |
Speaking of which, Marta carries around runestone and pearl of powers expressly so that an arcane caster with mage armor on their list can use it to cast mage armor on Marta. Looks like that would be Allie, so I'd appreciate it if Allie could use the runestone of power and a charge from her LMR of Extend to give her a mage armor that lasts 32 hours each day.
That leaves a pearl of power that she cannot use, so I figure she will lend it to our only prepared caster Zaarah Katsu.
Question: Will there be any summons or companions or the like that will be large or larger? I Like to pick Blades Above and Below as her optional teamwork feat if so, but if not I'll pick a different one.
Flint Firetoe |
I really dislike the whole teamwork feats/solo tactics mechanic. It just seems so wonky to me. The other flavour and mechanics of the Inquisitor class is great (judgement/bane/domain/spells/skills) however so you have to take the good with the bad. Still free feats are free feats so I will take them and so should you. :)
Theodric de LaMontagne |
If you don't like solo tactics then the cold iron warden, the preacher, the spellbreaker and the tactical leader may be for you. For these four archetypes, the rest of the inquisitor class is barely changed.
Flint Firetoe |
Well, that is something to keep in mind. :)
GM Otha |
I think I’ve GM’ed most of you at one time or another, so those of you that I have, you can skip this post as you’ve read it before…
For those of you I haven’t GM’ed before, I’ll give a bit of what you can expect from me. I don’t pretend to know everything when it comes to Pathfinder rules; most of you likely have been playing longer and know the rules better than I. Several of you are GMs and I realize you're better GMs than I. If, more likely when, I err, call me on it as you see it and I’ll fix it; I have no qualms about retconning if I screw something up. You won’t hurt my feelings as I like to think I don’t have too much of an ego. By rule of thumb, I’ll retcon if my mistake is detrimental to the PC/party; if my mistake is beneficial to the PC/party, I tend to not retcon unless I catch it immediately. I also try to give my NPCs a bit of flavor when the opportunity presents itself. My main goal is that everyone will enjoy themselves and have fun.
As a GM, most days I post two or three times a day, some times more during combat depending on the post rate of the players, as I try to keep things moving along. I don’t expect that much posting from my players, although you’re welcome to do so if you are able to and wish to. I’d appreciate if you could post at least once a day and once over the weekends. Real life comes first though so please let me know, if possible, when you may have a hard time posting. If I have to bot you, I’ll check your profile for botting instructions; lacking that, I’ll bot you conservatively equally considering the best interests of the character and the party. I don’t like to delay characters during combat encounters as that delay could be critical to other party members...
We can play at whatever pace you desire; if you feel I'm pushing a bit too fast or a bit too slow, let me know and I'll adjust. Since this is a Gameday session and we’re playing a module, we’ll likely have to roll for our boons before we’re finished.
As far as initiative goes during combat...for those players in the same initiative block, I usually play things out in post order as opposed to initiative order as I’ve found that moves the combat along more quickly. But if it’s a situation where it’s more beneficial to the party to play the block in initiative order, I will do so.
Looking forward to running y’all through this session...
I’ll probably open up the Gameplay thread a few days before start, if you wish, so your characters can get to know one another before we officially start…
Zaarah Katsu |
You are an awesome GM!!! Really looking forward to this!! ;-)
Theodric de LaMontagne |
I concur with Zaarah! I have been waiting for a long time for this mod, and couldn't have hoped for a better GM!
Flint Firetoe |
It is pretty exciting playing with such experienced players, a great GM and a seeker level module to boot. It should be a great time. :)
Alie Saechel |
The GM did a wonderful job in the last adventure for a few of us and I’m sure they’ll do it again with this one!
Theodric de LaMontagne |
I'm just RPing my guy in Gameplay folks, for a bit of spicy drama! lol! not trying to piss off Noral here, lol! my guy has Bruising Intellect, Int 20 and Intimidate 25. In all his professional dealings as a caravan owner he uses Intimidate instead of Diplomacy, leaning on the decrepitude of Taldor as an example of how not to get things done, and showing it as cautionary tale for the status quo of any rich merchant, ruler or VC he's ever dealt with (even a bit rebellious against The Ten themselves).
In private with his family, county constituents and most Pathfinders he's shared battle with, he's a lifelong loyal friend and will shed his last drop of blood to save any of them.
His trust must be earned, however, and he always want to make sure fellow Pathfinders are dead serious about their commitment to each other before a mission, as collectively, they are the only lifeline they have when they're out there.
-PDK
Theodric de LaMontagne |
PS (Noral): I think you need to update Zaarah's perception in the slides as it's way lower than your header stats.
PS2 (Flint): A static init of +22? someone wants to go first very bad hey? :) :D XD
Zaarah Katsu |
Thanks for the RP and the hint!! ;-)
Flint Firetoe |
@Theodric - Considering that combat can often last only 2 to 3 rounds at this level going first means considerably more actions every combat. I like that! :)
