Hello everyone! Previously, I hoped to join a Final Fantasy campaign being proposed on the boards here. Alas, real life interfered and caused our would-be GM to disappear. So, not wanting my interest in trying a tabletop version of Final Fantasy to go unfulfilled, I decided that if I couldn’t play in one, I’ll run one of my own instead.

To that end, I’m looking for five hardy souls to join me in a Jade Regent campaign run using Final Fantasy D20 rules. I’m also planning on making a few changes to the Adventure Path, so don’t expect me to run things as written.

Character Generation Rules are as follows:

Build: 20 point buy.
Races: Core and Base. No Shindroids, Genomes or Immortals.
Classes: Core, Base and Hybrid. No Freelancers. Mind that technology-based archetypes and classes may not be a good fit for this campaign.
Alignments: Any Non-Evil.
Starting Wealth: Max for your class.
Traits: 1 Jade Regent campaign trait, 1 other trait of your choice. You may take a drawback for a 3rd trait.
Level-Ups: Milestone levelling.
HP Gain On Level-Up: Half + 1 + CON.
Optional Systems?: Background Skills.

Recruitment ends March 20th.

Thus also the dotting.

Dotting and creating. I'll direct my steps towards a samurai/sword saint/fighter or similar, I guess.

Scarab Sages

The Final Fantasy rules provide a new set of deities. Do those need to be used, or can we stick to the standard Golarion deities?

I'm eyeballing a Holy Knight of Cayden Cailean as a possibility.

The standard Golarion deities.

I've been wanting to play JR for awhile, and I've also really wanted to play a red mage, so that's what I will be submitting.

Hmm Dragoncat says they are looking for a party of 5, and there's 5 'color' mages(Black, White, Red, Blue, and Green).

Who wants to make an all mage party?!? Lololol

Some additional information that I forgot to put in the initial recruitment post:

--The more 'odd' races will be a bit more common in Golarion than they would be in FF.
--Posting rate should be 1/day. Weekends optional.
--The party will begin in the town of Sandpoint. As such, your characters should be familiar with at least the core caravan NPCs mentioned in the Player's Guide, with other NPCs of Sandpoint at player discretion.
--I'm going to be making a few changes to the Adventure Path. As such, both newcomers to the AP and players who already know the general story of the AP are welcome to apply.
--Elephant in the Room (titled Moogle in the Room in FFD20) is something I've experimented with in the past, and TBH I don't feel it really added much. Therefore, I don't think I'll be using it this time.

Sorry.

Due to religious motives, I will bow out.

It's not so much that it 'adds much' to a game, moreso that it makes people's character builds a little easier, or allows them to use their feat slots for a bit of a better return.

For example, there's really no true reason that every single combat maneuver requires it's own improved version which all do the exact same thing.

Same with Power Attack/Deadly Aim being just something all PCs can just do once they hit +1 BAB.

It's obviously your call, but I think most potential applicants would appreciate using it. It's such an automatic inclusion for almost every game nowadays that when I posted my own recruitment, I completely forgot to mention it, cuz it's just a part of my games now.

Dotting in.

I'm into this idea :)

I may make a Black mage (Arcane Trickster), but the fact I have to lose spell proficiency and have to take two feats to get it back makes me hesitant.

I'm currently planning on a Ronso Blue Mage (Cerulean Lancer). Will there be a blitzball arena installed at Sandpoint?

Just a heads up, while it's listed as an "optional" rule, to an extent the system is actually balanced around Moogle in the Room from what I'm remembering about a conversation a while back with the "staff" on their Discord.

It's the same reason why all casters get Precise Shot (but with spells only) as a bonus class feature at 1st level. It's just part of the system assumptions.

Not having it will especially hurt martial characters because with one exception, NO class gets Bonus Feats. Even existing classes that rely on having oodles of Bonus Feats to work (eg. Monk) get z-z-z-zero Bonus Feats, and will never get them because Viladin apparently thinks having "cool class features" is better than your class being able to function baseline. The only exception is Fighter, which can trade a Fighter Talent for a combat Feat whenever.

"Hi friends!

Do you ever wonder what happens to you after you die? No, I don't mean your boring old soul. We all know about that. I mean your body! For most people it just lays in the ground pushing up the daises. Not very much fun I say.

But what if it doesn't end there?

What if your mortal coil could go on having EPIC adventures, while your soul basked in the eternal sunbathing of the afterlife?

Well now it can! Just sign on the dotted line and if you should die with honor, I'll enlist your fallen remains in the continued battle for the greater good!

I got the idea when my own dad, who lay old and feeble on his death bed, said his last words to me. He said 'Son! I was a great warrior in my youth, but now I am old and feeble. It is my dying wish that my remains do what I have not been able to do myself in decades. I want to wear my old armor and take up my sword again! Can ya do that for me, lad?'

And so I did! Now he and my mom get to galivant along, having great adventures that their fragile meat bodies haven't been able to do in years!

So when the little Moogle waddles up and asks you, just remember: Necromancy, it's the new Immortality!"

Dark Archive

Hee. Um, hi! I'm the friendly Necromancer from the, uh, other game that didn't get off the launch pad.

I'll have to fuddle with some of the math-numbers, but the basic concept is still...awesome. =)

Whew. With so many casters around, I think we need a bit of brawn to edge out and defend our backline people. Dotting in for interest, and having played a FFD20 oneshot a few months back, I've been itching to build a Blind Swordsman Samurai for a while.

Because the only thing cooler than a samurai that can cut people in half, is a samurai that can do it without even being able to see.

Hey Dragoncat, it's been a while.

Having absolutely no experience with 'final fantasy' (yeah, I live in a cave) I didn't post in your interest check, but I did start looking at the Final Fantasy rules. By your description it looks like you're adapting 'final fantasy' to the adventure path, instead of visa versa. I only point that out because I can create a back story based in Sandpoint, but I wouldn't be able to if it was set in, say, Vana'diel. (Yeah, I had to google it).

With that in mind, I was reading the available races and found the Palico; ' Their disposition is the same as many felines that they emulate.' Having had a few cats over the years, this made me chuckle, seeing as how they were all, in one way or another, thieves. Both the race and the class seem fairly straight forward, I figure it shouldn’t be too hard to put together a character.

My Palico thief will be either ‘adopted’ or ‘a friend of the family,’ hopefully I'll have the fluff and crunch up soon.

This will be drogeney's submission. I'm revamping something from a previous game attempt. Vinexa is an illusionist (succubus archetype) so she is a 3/4 caster with a s#+& ton of extra things she can do including light melee.

Well, if that's the case, then I'll give Moogle in the Room another try then.

I will be submitting Sona Tanaka.

A high number of mages in the party sounds fun lol. She could be the "thief" role.

I'd love to work with you, GM, on who her NPC family is. I've not played this module, so I don't know anyone in it, is that a problem? I'd love to be connected to a main character.

Scarab Sages

@SmooshieBanana: All the campaign traits are designed to connect characters to one of four major NPCs (more like demi-DMPCs) in one way or another. For example, it looks like you chose the Friend of the Family campaign trait for Sona. That one connects her Koya Mvashti.

If you haven't read the Player's Guide, it would help you to decide which of the four you would prefer to connect with since there are quick bios of all four: Ameiko Kaijitsu, Shalelu Andosana, Koya Mvashti, and Sandru Vhiski. You can choose a trait (most of the main NPCs have multiple options) that connects you to the one you prefer.

I'm assuming you're talking about the traits... If you meant the family of Sona herself that's different and I'm sorry!

I am still working on the character description and equipment but other than a minor tweak or two she should be done.

I think I'll be submitting a variant of my same character from the other recruitment; that is if you don't mind that I also recently started running Jade Regent.

@SmooshieBanana: rdknight has the right of it. The Friend of the Family trait connects you to the old Desnan priestess, Koya Mvashti. The circumstances of how you befriended the Mvashti family are up to you. You can find the campaign traits for Jade Regent in the AP's Player's Guide.

@Storm Dragon: I don't mind at all. I'm already adapting Final Fantasy to the AP, I'm going to be making other alterations to it as well. Bottom line, don't expect me to run the AP exactly as written.

Here's Vigny, Human Holy Knight of Cayden Cailean.

She's just about finished. I have some details to clean up here and there, and I'm also still working on her BAP. She has the Childhood Crush: Sandru campaign trait.

I did kind of mean both. I was aware that some games had players guides but this didn't mention it, plus the GM kind of expressed that they were throwing out some things that are common in the AP.

I'd also like to discuss how her family is/was connected.

Oh most glorious and wonderful Game Master Cat,

Smooshie, PaleDim, and myself(and possibly Jereru) are considering submitting a trio/quartet of mages that may all be possibly tied together in our backstories.

Is this something we should actively continue to pursue or is a group of linked PCs like this not such a good idea?

Hmm, finding myself somewhere between curiosity and boredom, I thought maybe a condensed list might be of assistance.

In order of appearance:
Drogeney: Vinexa Female Mithra Illusionist (succubus) 1
ScorchedOne
Jereru: samurai/sword saint/fighter
rdknight: Vigny Olafursdottir Female Hume Holy Knight of Caden Cailean 1
Monkeygod: a red mage
DBH
GM PaleDim: Ronso Blue Mage (Cerulean Lnacer)
SmooshieBanana: Sona Tanaka Female Hume Black Mage (Arcane Trickster) 1
Storm Dragon: Ekaterina Nodolny Female Hume Summoner (yojimbo)
Atlas2112: Thomas Roland Male Moogle Necromancer
Qyntessential: Blind Swordsman Samurai
Robert Henry: Palico thief

If I've missed anyone or gotten something wrong, please let me know.

Alright, Vigny is finished except for an edit to catch mistakes which I'll do tomorrow.

Dotting for interest

While that idea sounds pretty interesting in theory, I'm more than a little worried you might set yourselves up for disappointment if not all three of you are picked. If you all get picked for the campaign, the details of your relationships to each other can be sorted out best afterward.

GM, how do you feel about alternate heritages? Specifically, the Helion Hrothgar alternate for Ronso?

GM PaleDim wrote:

Alternative Heritages are always welcome!

Thanks. I'm pondering that and not taking the archetype as blue mage feels a little hamstrung being wisdom based, so with less knowledge skills and significantly worse knowledge rolls.

Ok, this is RH's Palico thief, Tribim. I've got the crunch done, but I'm still working on the character's fluff.

As I said I'm not familar with FF at all, and all I could find out about the Palico I've copied in the spoiler. Since it appears they aid hunters I took the 'Campain Trait: Student Survivalist and he would have been a companion to Shalelu for a time, since she's the closest NPC to a hunter.

I don't want to misrepresent the game/race so any information would be great. In the game are they playable races or just NPC'S? Do they speak? Is there any other overarching quality or trait? I mean other than cat-like (that I can do) and how cat like are they? Are they just long-lived smart felines, for instance do they hunt mice and eat them raw? Or are they more like other humanoid races and follow normal social standards?

I'd love to play a 'sidekick' that understands common but only speaks Mithran, but I don't know if that fits the Palico in the game. Any info from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

Palico:
Hailing from a land so distant it does not appear on any map...

Felynes in Monster Hunter: World are cat-like creatures that perform a variety of tasks. Some of them, called Palicoes, accompany you on Quests to slay Monsters.

Felynes are small bipedal cat creatures. They are sentient, and form small tribal communities in the wilderness but many felynes join human communities and usually work as servants, cooks and craftsmen. Felynes that accompany hunters are called Palicoes.

Palicoes are reliable comrades while out on the hunt. As hunters' reliable comrades out in the field, they specialize in a variety of offensive, defensive, and restorative support abilities. A Hunter's Palico joins them in the field with pride, as much a bona fide member of the Commission as any other Hunter.

A Hunter bonds with a Palico during their Hunter training, and from then on the two are inseparable. The Hunter and the Palico will work together until either's demise or the Hunter's retirement. Unlike traditional pet cats, Feylyne's are blessed with long life.

You only get one Palico. The one you customize during character creation will be the only companion Palico. Others will be in the Town or Players Housing but do not accompany the Hunter.

My crunch should be all done, finished it up a couple days ago. I have figured out my description and will get it written in tonight/tomorrow.

** spoiler omitted **...

Palicos will absolutely be playable races in this campaign. They're pretty much as described in the FFD20 page for them--but they're also quite happy to hunt for their own meals. They can follow the social standards of the people around them if they wish.

I'm torn between a Mithra dancer and a Varg berserker. The current submissions seem to lend more to the idea of the dancer.

Here is PaleDim's blue mage. He just needs fluff and adventuring gear.

Tribim wrote:

As you probably gathered from the spoiler, Palicoes are not actually a Final Fantasy race; they are native to the Monster Hunter series of games which is completely unrelated. There's a few distinctly non-Final Fantasy things in FFd20, such as the Demon Hunter Fighter (Devil May Cry), Solid Snake Rogue (Metal Gear), Combatant Rogue (World of Warcraft), and Highlander Blue Mage (...Highlander).

Palicoes are intelligent but typically subservient to humans. They speak Common (or their setting's equivalent), sprinkled with a ton of cat puns. They love to serve their meowsters as much as pawsible, and a furrious Palico is a furr-ightful sight to behold, nya.

Their appearances vary, from adorable to surprisingly badass (despite appearances...he is a chef).

Palicoes are multitalented, serving all sorts of tasks, from chefs to seamsters to merchants, blacksmiths, clerks, and even combatants, being meowsters of their own purrific fighting styles that can mix furrious fighting purrowess with purrnicious traps and tricks to turn the tables on the most furrightful monsters with ease.

Palicoes are great. And I cannot overstate that the cat puns are a core part of the experience.

Meautiful, I'd be a-lion if I said that wasn't purrfect! Hopefully were just scratching the surface of Tribims pawsibilities... now we need to decide if he needs a purrpose besides being the purrfect Cat-burglar and team meowscot.

We have four days left and a few things have been added, so here is another update.

In order of appearance:
Drogeney: Vinexa Female Mithra Illusionist (succubus) 1
ScorchedOne:
Jereru: samurai/sword saint/fighter
rdknight: Vigny Olafursdottir Female Hume Holy Knight of Caden Cailean 1
Monkeygod: a red mage
DBH:
GM PaleDim: Tarka Ronso Male ronso (Helion Hrothgar) blue mage 1
SmooshieBanana: Sona Tanaka Female Hume Black Mage (Arcane Trickster) 1
Storm Dragon: Ekaterina Nodolny Female Hume Summoner (yojimbo)
Atlas2112: Thomas Roland Male Moogle Necromancer
Qyntessential: Blind Swordsman Samurai
Robert Henry: Tribim Male Palico thief
ArendK:

If I've missed anyone or gotten something wrong, please let me know.

There, Vinexa's description is now in the profile and she can be considered completed.

I know my son is playing monster hunter when I hear the "bag of cats" sounds in the other room :)

So, practical question:

Since this AP is set in Sandpoint, are there going to be opportunities in the PF world to encounter the types of monsters that would have spells from the Blue Mage list?

I could also ask "how do Ronsos fit into Golarion" but I figure that can be worked out (e.g., I'm guessing they would be friendly with the shoanti and/or kellid clans).

I'll see about making sure Blue Mage-compatible monsters will be encountered, no worries about that.

Ronso of Golarion are commonly found in the northern regions of the world--they coexist with roegadyn and Ulfen humes.

Cool, thank you! Anything different about Helion Hrothgar?

Aside from having a matriarchal society, I'd say that Helion Hrothgar don't differ all too much from other Ronso.
