Sovereign Court Raging Swan Press

This week, Raging Swan Press is proud to announce the release of Duergar of the Obsidian Citadel a Pathfinder Roleplaying Game compatible TRIBES by John Bennett

Deep below a smoke-wreathed volcano dwells a black-hearted clan of duergar. From the vastness of the lightless halls of their Obsidian Citadel, they forge malevolent armour, weapons and items for any with the gold and bravery to deal with them. Such is their boundless greed and hatred of the surface dwellers, though, that the fruit of their labours often hold lurking, pernicious curses that strike down their wielder months or even years later.

So dour and obsessed with perfecting their craft are they, that the arts of beauty – music, poetry, painting and so on – are lost to them. Yet beauty they still crave. Thus they ride forth from their noxious smoke-wreathing mountain home atop wondrous silver steeds in search of fair maidens and talented artists to drag down to wilt away forever in the darkness deep below the earth.

Duergar of the Obsidian Citadel presents:

 Six new alternate class features
 Seven new feats
 Six new spells
 Five new magic items
 Two new templates - the Silver Creature and the Gold Creature)
 Ten stat blocks (ranging in CR from 2 - 13)

You can download a sample and check out the Foreword, Contents and sample here.

And don’t forget, Duergar of the Obsidian Citadel is a Dual Format PDF and is included in Raging Swan’s Free PDFs promotion.

This looks very cool!

I agree!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

When designing this particular tribe, I wanted to create a unique clan of duergars that weren't just evil dwarves to kill. Yes, there is still plenty of opportunity to mercilessly slaughter every one you come across but I tried working in an angle with their smithing skills that should hopefully provide a lot of noncombat interaction with them. I wanted to keep them in vein with their depiction in Pathfinder (evil slavers) but also present them as the cunning and greedy dwarves sometimes depicted in ancient mythology. I hope people enjoy it as I really enjoyed working on these guys.

I do hereby proclaim this duergar fortress to be...the Obcitadel!

And the artwork is really great too :)!

I am looking forward to this (after I can save up enough money of course). Congratulations John, Duergar are, in my opinion, one of the most underrated races in the game. I'm jealous that you got to work on before I did.....

Liberty's Edge

Hey kazarath - that's an awesome avatar/icon! What is it and where did it come from?

Oh thank you, I think its a skum sorcerer from shore to sea

I think I had just turned it in when you and I were discussing duergar in another thread awhile back. I hope you enjoy it.

I'm sure I will. Unless you make them flower-smelling, baby-touching vegans I think anything that actually pays attention to them (in a favourably light hopefully) is good in my book ;).

Cool! I actually thought it might be a sahuagin ...

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled duergar program :)

I've bought the PDF and I have to say John, I'm impressed. You've manage to blend all three of my favourite evil dwarves: Dark Irons from Warcraft, Chaos Dwarves from Warhammer, and, of course, Duergar. I actually might use some of the feats in an upcoming game.

I may be bias because of my huge love of the subject matter, but I'd say 5 stars. Well done.

The Duergar King has spoken!!!

Awesome, I'm glad you enjoyed it since you're a big fan of the duergar. Creighton did a great job cramming all the stuff I gave him into this supplement.

Well, if you want to write a review, I certainly won't stop you!

Color me impressed by Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands.

I'll be picking this up... come paycheck. Who needs to eat, right?

Also, what does TRIBES mean?

Excellent! I'm delighted you enjoyed Shadowed Keep - that was a real labour of love!

TRIBES is a line of products Raging Swan puts out. Each depicts a tribe of humanoids - bugbears, orcs, kobolds etc - but puts a lot of flesh on the bones. They present reolplaying notes, new spells, feats, magic items and loads of stat blocks. You can see a whole list of available tribes here. If you are interested, I'd happily send you a sample tribe. Just PM me your email addy.

Raging Swan has just released a free web enhancement on their site for Duergars. You get the TRIBE poem (also written by me), sample NPC personalities, and the background and stats for the wicked duergar princess, Vormmara.

As John said, Raging Swan has just released a free web enhancement for Duergar of the Obsidian Citadel presenting several sample denizens of the citadel along with the depraved princess Vormmara and a rather nifty poem!

You can grab a copy here.

What I love about doing these TRIBES is that not only did I get to practice my statblocking skills, feat, spell, and magic item creation, I get to work on my poetry as well! With the bugbears, the poem was the very first thing I wrote but with the duergar, I struggled with it until the end.
