You have been with the Hanataz Troupe known as the Blue Veil for long enough to be accepted as one of them. For some of you this means your whole life, some of you it has been more recent but you have proven to be an asset to the troupe. Whatever your circumstances, you are now Hanataz-and will be for the rest of your life.]
The Hanataz...Wayfarers..."Carnivaliers." Road travelers with no homes save for the wagons, and no kin save for the troupe. It is the life of a vagabond. Many of the folk of the north believe your lives are cursed. Some say you bring ill fortune. Some say you carry a shadowed taint. In truth, many of you do..for when the Blood-Touch of the Abyssal, Fey, Elemental, Draconic, or others are detected in a child, the parents often give such children to the Hanataz. They do this to avoid having the children be ostracized, imprisoned or even killed by superstitious and fearful people in their hometowns. Some parents even do this if their child is a Half-Elf or has been stricken with a disease or affliction that disfigures or cripples them.
But, Even though the Hanataz are regarded with suspicion, your arrival on the outskirts of a town or village causes the locals to flock to your camps and see the shows you put on, which are called "Carnivalles." These events are popular among the common-folk, who come to watch your women dance, cheer your performances, and gasp at your freaks. All while they eat your spicy foods and drink your strong spirits.
Oftentimes, the “Townies” will bring their local champions and wager on them in wrestling matches against your stout-folk, or in contests of skill with bow and blade. Gambling is also common at Carnivalle, and there are always games of chance being run for those willing to place their bets. Lastly, and perhaps the most popular of all, the people come to hear the portents of their futures from your Seeress.
You never stay long in one location. Someone always blames you for a picked pocket, or starting a fight, or some evil happening that seemed to arrive with your coming. Most priests decry your arrival saying you bring immorality, debauchery, and drunkenness; that your women are whores, and your men thugs and thieves. And so , you travel…from the outskirts of one settlement to another. Never welcome in the town proper…but seemingly always greeted by those who would seek out your particular, and unique offerings.
It is the 5th day of Dezu’un. The last month of the year…in the annum named the Year of the Rogue Moon. In just three weeks, the month of Dezu’un will give way to Jazu’un and the new year. Soon after, the true cold of the northlands will come screaming like a banshee from the Icingraez and drive into the very bones of all who dwell in the Central and northern territories of the continent of Verdestia.
You will set a “hard camp” before then, likely within the vicinity of the city of Dragon’s Cross, and there will be no more traveling for nearly three months. Not until the first of Winterblooms push through the melting snows to spread their red petals…and flutter in the spring breezes like newborn butterflies.
As Dezu’un comes to a clost, Wintersdance will soon be celebrated in the Cities, towns, and villages of Verdestia- and indeed across most of the world of Zyathe. This festival begins on the 20th of Dezu’Un. Wintersdance is a time of great joy with many parties and much revelry…coupled with gift-giving and all manner of festivities. The celebration is long…extending to the first day of the new annum some two weeks later.
Some, however, do not welcome the arrival of the new year. There are whispers that the days that are coming will bring times of great evil. That the prophecies of the powerful sages speak of a time of great fears and horrors that rapidly approaches. [/ooc]
[ooc]Indeed, even the name of the coming annum is ominous. For it is called..the Year of Dark Dreams.
If the sages of old are to be believed, this year will bring great turmoil to the world, horrible wars, deadly plagues, and many, many, deaths. Some in the troupes say it is the “end of days” and that the Seeresses know it…but will not speak of it. These fears lie upon you as shadows in your minds-with the unalterable fact that time is moving slowly forward towards the inevitable. Whatever it may be.
You have more immediate concerns, however, the Carnivalle is soon to begin. You have arrived outside the town of Nevermore. Your group, known affectionately and sometimes with exasperated sarcasm as the Zatis, or “Helpers” in the common tongue, are capable enough to assist directly with the Carnivalle. Borag and Calnasse have chosen you to escourt them into town while they negotiate the terms of the Carnivalle with the local council.
”Alright Zatis, listen good. These Nevermore folks have been good to us in the past, but like all places we visit not all of us are welcomed. Keep to yourselves and try not to cause any trouble. If forced to fight try to use your fists or what you can to knock out your opponent, but don’t kill them. We will only be here one night. We are going to stay at the Hall of Joyful Celebrations, a temple of sorts to Fuffan and Buffahn (The joylord and the lord concoctor). The priest owes us a favor, but do not interrupt their rituals or feasts. We have audience with the town council tomorrow, then we go back to the troupe and set up the Carnivalle. During the audience you will be posted outside watching the horses and our wagon. Any questions? Ask them now don’t be shy. ” Borag looks you all over as he speaks. He is more serious this time than you has been with you in the past, and you know being chosen for this duty is a big deal.

Sam knows he's not a good brawler, so he hopes he doesn't get involved in a brawl. He could potentially use some of his special abilities, but that would surely lead to accusations of witchcraft, demon worship and even worse. Folks fear what they don't know and, most of all, they hate to lose a fight with a Hanataz.
When asked about questions, he just says what he had in mind for a few minutes.
"Is it usual that someone tries to steal the horses or sneak into the wagon? Should we expect trouble?" He keeps his breath while waiting for an answer, hoping that he doesn't have to choose between his live and the Blue Veil reputation.

Celebrations and drinking spread. What if we are asked to participate? Also, what is the priest's name? He directed his mental focus to Borag.
"And what if they don't want us here?" Rooks asks, always the pessimist.
"What'll we do then? Winter is coming and all."
The girl stands tall, even among the men of the Zatis. She is wearing her usual loose dress, which somewhat succeeds in hiding her size, dyed as dark as the birds around her.
Rooks doesn't picture herself as much of a guard - too shy for that. But she know her size alone might keep some men from trying anything stupid.
Ichabod steps around Rooks trying to not get lost in the shuffle. He was almost late for the meeting as he adjusted and oiled his newly modified "Stink mech", but made it in time to know the jest of it.
"T'will be fun to nose about and see what this towns all about".
He then adjusted a few of the vials of colored snake oil he had in a bandolier across his shoulder, and waited to depart.
He then lays a stubby finger alongside his nose, and tries to recall anything he might recall about the town.

Borag smiles at you all. You are all excited, yes? Don't worry little Rooks you are most welcome with my friend, Father Zyas. Borag says and looks at Ghost when he says the name. Participation in the feasts will be fine if they offer, but they also appreciate the hard work that comes from preparing such a feast so I would offer help in that regard if you plan on enjoying their feast.
Borag looks solemnly at Sammy. No, that sort of thing is not common. At least it wasn't. We have heard rumors lately of foul things happening and best we keep to ourselves while here as much as possible and watch our own.
Ichabod:
When Borag mentions foul things, you remember an incident that traveled far and wide last year regarding a member of the Butcher Family being arrested for suspicion of murder, but it could not be proven. He is now a member of the town council.
Borag leads the way through the city. You get stares from people and children clap and jump up and down pointing with excitement knowing that your arrival in town marks the start of Carnivalle and Winterfeast.
Father Zyas greets you. He is a balding Dwarf with a very round belly and a wide smile. He gives Borag a big hug and puts a goblet of a strong smelling spirit in his hand.
Welcome Friends! Hanataz! Carnivalle! Fuffan be praised! Father Zyas will likely be a side kick for the party providing the role of healer. He is a coward and will only fight if his own life is in peril, otherwise he will just cast healing and support spells in combat. Out of combat he is typically too drunk to be of any help.

However, his mind is somewhere else - night after night, his dreams haunt him longer and clearer. What could be the meaning of this? He doesn't know, and though he wants to find out, he has more urgent things to do right away.
He shakes off his thoughts and greets Father Zyas with a short "Hello". Ghost takes the lead, asking what they're supposed to do, so Sam pays full attention to the following answer.
"Oh! Yes! Old Friends arriving, Carnivalle starting, Winterfeast! So many things to celebrate! But I couldn't possibly ask you to assist having just arrived after a long journey...Please come in and make yourself at home."
As you come into this long ranch style dwelling, you see that it is well maintained and there is a large concentration here of haflings and soflings working. The smell of brewing spirits is strong.

Ghost tilted his head toward Father Zyas, following closely and speaking telepathically to the Dwarf.
Father Zyas, do not be surprised. It is not hard to see there is something weighing upon your mind. We are guests under your care, yes. But strangers to others. If there is a task that we could help with to ease our arrival, you need not hide it. Nor even voice your concerns aloud, but I would hear them.
Action- give Father Zyas the ability to speak telepathically to me for 1 hour.
Mind Link:
You can speak telepathically to any creature you can see, provided the creature is within a number of feet of you equal to 10 times your level. You don't need to share a language with the creature for it to understand your telepathic utterances, but the creature must be able to understand at least one language.
When you're using this trait to speak telepathically to a creature, you can use your action to give that creature the ability to speak telepathically with you for 1 hour or until you end this effect as an action. To use this ability, the creature must be able to see you and must be within this trait's range. You can give this ability to only one creature at a time; giving it to a creature takes it away from another creature who has it.

"Umm, what kinds of odd things have been occurring, exactly?" she then asks hesitantly, feeling a bit uncomfortable by the dwarf's comment.

"He is probably a street urchin, please come along we must find Brother Liam before it is too late. " Father Zyas remarks looking through the crowd hoping to find Brother Liam. The streets are becoming more sparse, but no sign of Brother Liam in the market area.
As Icabod makes a move towards the alley the strange figure turns and walks deeper into the alley.
"Is Brother Liam well-known in town? Would people know him if we asked if they've seen him?"
Well, if someone else asked, that is. Rooks isn't really the type to strike conversation with strangers. Otherwise, they'll just have to search the streets. At least the crowds are gone, so finding someone in particular should be easier.
There is truth in Ghost Nail's words - they are an odd-looking group and people tend to look at them. Still, this half-elf and the halfling from earlier make her feel watched in a different way than before.

In the alley you can make the backside of the half-Elf going where the alley dead ends. From a dark corner a black cloaked figure with a crossbow has attempted to fire at Sammy. The alley is between 2 stone buildings there is about 10' between the two buildings and stretches for about 50'. The building on the left only continues for about 35'. The Building on the right continues about 45'. Another row of buildings on the other-side are stacked relatively parallel, but staggered creating an another alley way to the left and right once you reach the end of this one. The building on the left is a fish monger and some old fish bones are left in this alley for the local cats. The building on the right is some sort of pulp mill.

The Darkest Dream is a third party adventure from Gooey Cube. There is a free player's primer on their website I recommend to get familiar with the world of Zathe. In this game you will play a member of the Hanataz, which is a name for a group of people that live nomadic lives like gypsies, Romani, ect. You will be part of the Blue Veil Troupe and putting on a Carnivalle for the locals.
Character Creation:
Any race/class from official D@D material, and or gooey cube material. You can create a custom Hanataz background that is fine. Stats 5D6 drop lowest 2. Roll 2 sets pick one. Max HPs every level. Milestone leveling. Write a short background including why/how you joined the Blue Veil Troupe. What do you do at the Carnivalle? This will actually be important because I am starting the campaign on the first day of the Carnivalle and not the last requiring you to "Earn" your starting wealth before the game starts in earnest. You will get your standard equipment and the basics are provided by the troupe (food, shelter, relative safety)but you will have no wealth to start with.
Campaign Rules:
The game comes with some suggested house rules. I will adopt some of them. NPCs have to roll 20 to confirm a crit. Clerics and druids will start with a wand of cure light wounds. You will get a number of "Hero Points" equal to your proficiency bonus. These have uses similar to the ones from Pathfinder or Fate Points from games like Deathwatch/Dark Heresy. I will outline specifics in the campaign tab soon. Detect magic will be blocked by wood and anything denser. Identifying items will require a bit of research usually as magic in this world is...different. When casting identify or using a similar ability another roll will accompany it. The game suggests an intelligence check, but I think I will allow insight, perception or history rolls as well depending on the item being looked at.
What have I changed from the original?:
Some encounters will change. Biggest change is that I have started you all on the first day of the Carnivalle and not the last. The main themes/story of this campaign will not be altered so please don't read ahead.
*I should have recruitment done by the 7th of Aug. That gives me plenty of time to prepare, and you all time to submit quality characters you want to run. Feel free to coordinate with other applicants. I will take 6 (possibly one or two more knowing the nature of drop offs on this board). This game is more about playing the role of a nomadic carnival type and less about being a mercenary
Sounds great!! Looking forward to this new game world...and if it is ok, might I try some new rolls?? My last ones were rather underwhelming (I actually rolled 5 1's lol) If not, that is fine too.
Well it looks like set #2 will be it!! Now I was thinking of a knife-thrower as my circus job (not sure yet if going thief or fighter). Will play around and try to get something out shortly
Just finished reading the Cylopedia Zyathica Vol. 1 and there are rules for the "blood touched" in that I will use. Basically you get 10% chance to be a blood touched. These come with various abilities, however there is some social repercussions to being one. If you really would rather not be one I will let you decline, however if you are able to be one I will let you pick the kind.
Actually that rogue/illusionist custom class is interesting. Where can I find full crunch for those new classes and races? Is it volume 1 of the cyclopedia?

The Cylopedia Vol.1 has the races. I don't have the player guide yet just the free primer. I'll probably get the player guide later in the week.
*Edit actually there are 3 free classes on their website. Spelldancer, Agent of Jinxx and Frenta. Link to site under campaign tab
I just wanted to be able to start the game with Actor feat. I like the mimicry ability it enables on illusionist wizard. Probably high deception with some roguish skills on the side, but pure wizard class.
Backstory wise, I wanted to revise an old character idea that only had a few posts of play here years ago. Basically my character was responsible for a major accident where thousands of people died, but wasn't morally strong enough to turn self in. To avoid capture she created a new identity including spending everything on a Gender Bending potion to become a man. Joining the circus might be part of that too and now pays the bills with entertaining illusions/theatre.

Roland Variant-Human Rogue from Daniel
Ichabod Silverbottom Rock Gnome Artificer from Scranford
Mishima is working on a Variant Human Rogue/Illusionist of some sort.
Abilities: race: Actor feat
class: Arcane Recovery(1)
Background Feature: False Identity
You have created a second identity that includes documentation, established acquaintances, and disguises that allow you to assume that persona. Additionally, you can forge documents including official papers and personal letters, as long as you have seen an example of the kind of document or the handwriting you are trying to copy.
Prepped:
1: silent image, unseen servant, disguise self, floating disk
Current Equipment: class: dagger, component pouch, scholar's pack, spellbook
background: A set of fine clothes, a disguise kit, tools of the con of your choice (ten stoppered bottles filled with colored liquid, a set of weighted dice, a deck of marked cards, or a signet ring of an imaginary duke), and a pouch containing 15 gp
Whats missing is languages. Do you have a language list specific to Zyathe?
Specifically, is there any language related to the shadowplane (like Umbral or Shadar-kai)?
Zyathe has languages like many other worlds (Common, Elvish, Orkish ect) There are languages for the new races like Aethyrian. The planes are a bit different in this setting and from what I have read so far I do not see something specific related to shadowplane language. For now you can use Umbral, but if something more appropriate comes up as I go through this material I will let you know.
Hmm...that 2nd set is really quite good. I suppose I should come up with something. First thoughts point me toward a half-elf bard, putting +1's with the 15 and one of 13's and the +2 with one of the 16's, that gives me:
STR: 14
DEX: 16
CON: 16
INT: 13
WIS: 13
CHA: 18
I'll get to work on the rest after I read through the player's primer.
A pity we don't have access to these new races. I'll try with variant human or custom lineage meanwhile, and my character will be an apprentice to the troupe's mechanic, with the intention to become a tank once he hits 3rd level and gets to pick his archetype.
Also, in which part of the world is the game taking place?
Just in case...
Woyzeck... the Strong man and wrestler. Strong in body at any rate.
Variant Human w/Tavern Brawler
Modified Gladiator (Athletics instead of Acrobatics)
Champion Fighter to be... still in training :) (unless there is new archetype for the campaign)
Fighting Style: Unarmed Fighting
Athletics
Performance
Intimidation
Insight
Human Skill: TBA
Str 20. (+1 race, +1 feat)
Dex 14
Con 15 (+1 race)
Int 6
Wis 12
Cha 9

"Woyzeck only pawn in game of life"
Woyzeck serves a dual role in the troupe. One as generic strongman - he parades in moth eaten hide armour dressed like Ozogg the Mighty One - god of strength and Giantkind, carrying a great massive hammer, bends iron rods, lifts costumed girls over his head and so forth. He also serves in the small saw-dust (or in this case straw) arena - either for wrestling or brawling, as the carnival champion, taking on all comers.
Note: I can play a pretty decent 6 intelligence (Intending to steal inspiration from Mongo from Blazing saddles in this game) but if people are a bit "6 Int? *Groan*" I can switch Int and Cha. That said I'd be more a circus freak if my charisma was massively low and my performance skill would be a massive +0, as would be my intimidation skill... not so cool.
Customised backgrounds, ie changing out one skill for another is covered in the PHB.
Why did I take insight as a skill?
It reflects a) Living with Carnies. You have to learn to live with lies, either from the troupe or from customers b) You can't be a successful semi professional ring fighter or wrestler very long if you can't pick a poorly executed 'fake out' or a feint.
Sam is the current apprentice of the troupe smith. The boy wasn't originally a Blue Veil, but was found by the troupe years ago, the sole survivor of a family that had fallen prey to some raiders.
He showed a knack for crafts, and has learned many ways to return the favour to the troupe. He's bound to be the next chief craftsman, dedicating his life to the collective well-being.
Sam has mixed blood, though his Aethyr features are far from obvious. He could be mistaken for a regular, cheerful blond guy. In any case, this hasn't been a problem in the Blue Veils, who have treated him like one more, and whether it was a problem with his old family is something Sam has already forgotten.
Even though he's not the strongest guy around, he's quite brave, and won't hesitate to put himself in peril to defend you once you gain his heart.
Yes. Consulting with scranford, he said he would go Alchemist, while I will go Armorer. The two seem different enough to me to not pose a problem. But, of course, of there's a problem with that, I'm flexible enough to change the character.

In the campaign Tab I have added some things. Most notable is the Dramatis Persona spoiler that has many of the main adult members of the troupe listed. This might be helpful when crafting a backstory.
Recruitment is still open until the 7th for anyone else interested in trying out this 3rd party Campaign that seems to be pretty epic proportions.

Could do with a divine caster type, and perhaps a nature savy type. I am willing to go into this heavy knowing people will drop off as is a standard reality on these boards.
Story on short:
No one remembers how long the Pigeon Lady has been around. It just feels she’s always been there, tending her birds. While she herself would never be on the stage, the birds always attract crowd. Outside the shows, people tend to avoid the strange woman, which suits her fine. And everyone knows better than try to hurt her birds…
I’ll think about the crunch soon, once I have access to proper computer. She would most likely be a melee / close range fighter unless there’s too many already in the group. In any case, would fill the nature-savy slot :)
Notes:
- I took Favored Foe from TCoE instead of Favored enemy
- Background is Frenta from GooeyCube
- Swarmkeeper archetype comes into play at 3rd level, so the birds are pure fluff at this point
- I'm not 100% decided with the feat right now. Depends on what kind of combat style I'll be taking. I'll take a better look at the other characters to see if the group needs something in particular.
I also changed the background a bit - this is a younger version of a 'bird lady'. Better match for her stats, and maybe a better fit for an epic campaign.
Rooks - the background:
Eleanor the Fat, they called her. Eleanor Big-boned, Eleanor the Wide. Children were very good at creating names for one who looked different. And as usual, they were very merciless and cruel, and kept mocking and teasing the poor girl. This went on for years, until they - both Eleanor and the other kids - learned that being big also meant being strong. And one day Piotr went a little too far with his jests. Eleanor, tears in her eyes, picked a fallen branch from the ground, and swung in anger. It was almost the death of little Piotr, that now swing. And from that day onwards, no one called Eleanor names to her face.
But the damage was already done. Eleanor shied away from other people and found comfort only in the wilds and in animals. Birds in particular were her favourite. They offered companionship without caring how big or odd she looked. And for whatever reason, the birds seemed to like her as well. Eleanor and her black birds - wherever she went, the birds came as well. And people noticed that, and knew that where black birds were gathered, the strange girl wouldn’t be far. “I see Rooks a-coming”, they said. And that name stuck.
By chance or fate, a Carnivalle came near her town one day. Seeing all those wonders and the strange people of the Blue Veil troupe, Rooks immediately knew the troupe would be where she belongs. Without hesitation she left her family and joined the troupe, where Selvra took her under her wing, recognising Rooks connection with the wild. But to earn her keep, she must work. And while she is trying to teach her birds to perform for audience, it is easier said than done. So for now, she just helps Selvra in tending her beasts. Although Borag has said she could take part in the strongman shows whenever she would like…
Interesting. The first block is strictly better in most regards, but it doesn't reach the height or fall as low in the second block. I think it would probably fit better to go with what I had in mind to go the first one, in this case.
Blood Touched, 01-10%:1d100 ⇒ 5Yes! I would be very interested to know more about this.
In regards to class, I was thinking of playing a Divine Soul Sorcerer, which should line up nicely with the need for a cleric type.
For performances within the Blue Veil Troupe, I was considering a suite consisting of: balance, acrobalance, aerial hoop, aerial silk, and aerial straps. So for the background it would be something to give both Acrobatics and Athletics.
Hmm, it is a bit late where I am to write up a fullbackground but I have gone over the Player's Primer Secrets of Zyathé. So far as race is concerned I'm looking between Kalashtar, or perhaps an aethyr, which sounds close to what I had in mind.
Background: in progress:
He was found wandering out of the darkness while the troupe was between shows. One stormy evening, some years ago. It was with a fright to the lead wagon driver pulled on the reins of his steed, when the masked figure was noticed moving towards them. The figure simply stood, staring forward with his hollow eyes.
Later, once things had calmed down they questioned the boy. He could not recall who he was, nor his family, and only has a vague recollection that he came from somewhere south. Ghost was a name given to him, partly as a joke regarding how he simply appeared. Since the boy had no direction, and he was also different from most, the Troupe offered to let him travel with them, perhaps one of his family would find him at their show. But it wouldn't be for free. He would have to work, outside of and in the show. Ghost accepted their offer.
