Now THAT was worth waiting for! Best post ever!

therealthom |

Apologies for dropping off the face of the earth. A couple big things happened this week that I thought I could handle. I was wrong.
1. Travel for a long term job in SoCal. Lot's of prep and trying to finish things at home before I left. And work dropped a last second job on me a couple days before I left.
2. Doing the long term job -- hours have been short, but I've had a lot of other activities. Trouble with my rental car, trying to learn a new software and piece of equipment, still trying to finish up that last second job.
Unfortunately this apology doesn't mean I'll resume posting tonight. It's just an update. I am hoping to resume posting in the middle of next week.
Sorry again.

Well, I'm guessing you like to eat. Doing things that put food on the table has to be more important than playing games.
I was going to post something this weekend, but, since we're on this already . . ..
My parents are about to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.
I'm going to climb into a minivan with my wife, daughter, and our daughter's two toddler children in order to drive to the celebration. Then my wife wants to run over to see our second child and his family who can't join us for the celebration.
By the time this is said and done, the trip will cover a full month, 13 days of which are just driving in the car (shorter driving days to accommodate the limit of toddlers tolerating sitting still and doing nothing). San Antonio to Seattle to Detroit to San Antonio.
I'll be posting from my phone. I expect to actually have more time to check messages than I do normally. But I hate trying to type on that tiny virtual keyboard.
We hit the road Monday morning.

I've been doing a similar minivan family road trip kind of thing this week. So, the lull has actually helped me a bit. My two oldest girls are nearing high school graduation, so my wife and I have been crisscrossing the state so they can tour various college campuses. The younger ones are bit older than the toddler stage, thankfully. So, they've generally been more manageable. Our last visit is tomorrow. Things should get back to normal for me after that, but I'm ready to start back whenever the GM says go.

Home. My computer died while we were gone. Boot SSD isn't recognized anymore . . .. System is probably 6 years old at this point. Well behind the tech curve. Ordered something current to replace it. Feeling very fortunate to be ABLE to do so, honestly.
On my wife's computer, and will be stealing time on it to handle the online games until the new computer in place and operational.
Had a really good time visiting with my family. Very glad we took the trip.

To all present, greetings!
Let it be known that the player associated with this character will be out of pocket for six days. During this period, he will be attending a work conference and will be limited to his cell phone for access to the forum. This conference has a reputation for providing entertainment covering the normal downtime. The final day of the trip will be 19 Aug, 2022.
We thank you for your patience and cooperation during this time.

This is a devious encounter - I like it. Very challenging with the two boss flyers. Spinjack is Charles Bronson? We're screwed.
Never is just being Never, charging at danger and throwing caution and good sense to the wind. She's trying to get as close as she can the only way she sees how, whether it works or not.
Maybe she's about to learn that she's not a superhero. Or maybe something memorable is about to happen. I'm cool either way, and climbing the trees is true to her "never tell me the odds" personality.

Jaeric Kem |

I like that Never is keeping Farvenzi occupied. I'm thinking if we can subdue Spinjack, we may be able to force a truce without having to take them both out. Ryphorians and their dragonkin are supposed to form a super-close bond (from a metagame standpoint), so maybe we can make that work to our advantage by capturing one and forcing the other to surrender? And, at this point, we've hit Spinjack more often than Farvenzi. I also think he's more "in charge" from what we learned during our prior interaction. So, he's target #1.
If Never can keep Farvenzi off of the rest of us, Jaeric, Zephyr, and Lorne might be able to take Spinjack. And, if not, Sparky might be able to bring in the Pegasus as a backup plan. Either way, we need to resolve things before those other guards arrive. Otherwise, it gets even more complicated.
P.S. I laughed out loud at the Charles Bronson token for Spinjack! :)

Z-4 "Zephyr" |

Is it obvious that Farvenzi has some fire resistance? Zephyr did 32 points of damage just last round and the dragonkin’s total damage taken is less than that.
Not sure who else has done damage to him, but Zephyr has hit him 3 times for a total of 45 points of fire damage (from the artillery laser).

All about the money! Haven't been able to afford ANY weapon that was a good upgrade from the cheap, lower tech pistol he's been using. Started with several tool kits across his skills, focusing more on his ability to keep things and people up and running FIRST.

![]() |

I hear ya. I'm suddenly facing the choice to not use my entropic strike ability, which is the whole point of the character class, because now I have an actually good melee weapon I can use. We've hit that mid-point in character level progression where we still rely on our early powers while we're waiting for the good stuff at level 9+.
Zephyr, I don't think I can give you the glaive. Looks like you already have a good melee attack option? Just keep shooting unless you have a jetpack hidden on your sheet.

Z-4 "Zephyr" |

Yeah, just pounding with the gauntlets in his powered armor. The glaive would be nice as a taunt to the dragonkin, but don’t sweat it if you don’t have the movement to hand it to me. Though, all Zephyr is doing is moving this round, so he may be able to grab it as he goes past if you allow it…

![]() |

Sorry, no, I have plans for it if the opportunity presents. But unless we think this combat is getting too tedious I really don't anticipate GM being overly generous. Don't stop shooting - you're still doing damage. We have plenty of HP yet and not in any immediate danger of losing. Eventually Favre and Spin will see the futility of their tactics, even if Never is reduced to just being a target for the duration.

Z-4 "Zephyr" |

Unfortunately, jetpacks don’t work with powered armor.

therealthom |

They cut my contract short in California. Last week I was trying to get the job to a decent stopping point. Friday red-eye, zombie Saturday, hang with the wife Sunday.
Teaching this week so only 1/day chance to post, but we're moving again.
Will look into the equipment situation, probably next week. Entirely possible that I've miscalculated what your wealth should be.

Z-4 "Zephyr" |

Spinjack is significantly above 62 damage after multiple additional hits, right?

Z-4 "Zephyr" |

Add +1 to those attacks for Zephyr due to “get ‘em” if that makes a difference…

@GM, I forget what happens to the spoils. If this was for-credit I'd lose the glaive but be able to buy it back, but the thing is really spendy. Obviously I want it, but getting to keep it represents a huge loot imbalance with the rest of the party. I'm fine with however it works out. It was fun to swing around a couple times. Entropic Strike starts to get good at next level so I wouldn't gain as much from the damage difference with the glaive. It's more of an image thing, like Cloud with his big f@%@ing sword.

We've been treating loot just like it was regular Starfinder. If you keep it past the scenario you have to buy it. BUT -- I'm going to take a hard look at party wealth before we start the next scenario. Maybe we can work something out.

Jaeric Kem |

I keep feeling woefully outmanned/outgunned (at least in terms of equipment). I'm not sure if that's because of any wealth gaps with regards to loot, or just the nature of equipment attack and damage scaling across character levels that's inherent within Starfinder. This is only my second game (both PbP) aside from demos, so I'm probably not optimizing very well. If I didn't have mind thrust, I'm not sure Jaeric would have been very helpful in combat (aside from channeled healings, of course). Granted, he's not meant to be a frontline character, though. So, maybe that's part of it, too? I welcome any thoughts or feedback any of you might have.

![]() |

That makes sense. I'm sure I can find better ways to spend credits. We've clearly gone past the tipping point where armor has lost almost all value against bosses. Soon we'll reach the point where the common ghoul is now +17 to-hit. Ahh, Starfinder.

Lorne Skyjumper |

I know I spent money on support gear that COULD have gone to superior weaponry. Thing is, I want to spend even MORE money on support gear. I may already be at the point where my weapon is basically useless against even most thugs, but I don't have the support toys I want, yet!
Harrying Fire might become my standard MO, because the power of the weapon isn't really relevant.

So, generic posting of warning.
My wife reports for surgery in roughly 12 hours.
Her surgeon has asked me to take 2 weeks from work to be at home to provide assistance.
That will also mean corralling the two grandchildren, keeping them entertained and fed while their Mom works, and keeping them out of Grandma's hair.
Can't say that I'm positive what my posting habits will be like until I can return to my normal schedule.
Thank you for your understanding, and go kill something evil, will ya?

therealthom |

Good luck to you and your wife, hustonj. I hope everything works out. The game will be here when you are ready to return.
Everyone, you've got some RP/diplomatic challenges ahead, but we're done with combat. (Unless you decide the easiest way to get the scientists and research station off planet is to kill them all. And take their stuff.)
When we began the scenario you were each sitting on 9000 credits in cash and gear. That's the wealth by level number from the Starfinder rule book for level 5. A quick calculation of standard SFS rewards comes out to about 13,000, but you'd be buying the equipment piecemeal as you leveled up and selling off older equipment at a loss. Not sure how that works out exactly, but 13=>9 essentially means you've bought and discarded 4000 in gear or consumables. Could be about right.
We're coming up to an awkward bit in the arc.
Scenario Levels
1-17 ____ 5-8
1-29 ____ 7-10
1-31 ____ 3-6
1-34 ____ 3-6
1-39 ____ 7-10
to be continued...

...
Never opens her mouth and blasts a jet of super cold air over the dragonkin.
...
Point of origination of the cone is upper-left, aiming north. The cone will hit Farvenzi and Spinjack but not Lorne or Zephyr.
Were you aiming to hit Spinjack too, or just describing the direction of the cone? If you were aiming for Spinjack, he's toast and I'll retcon the game. If you were just spewing that way, we'll say Never was facing up at Farvenzi and the cone passed over Spinjack.
Let me know what you intended.

I'm not familiar with these modules. Is it possible to advance us to Lvl 6, run 31, 34, and then 17, and then go to Lvl7 and finish the other 2? I'm sure you thought of that and I can't remember when we last leveled up. Real-time seems like it's been a while.

therealthom |

More info and the problem may be solved : after 1-17 we will run 1-99. That will end the first part of the arc. It's for levels 1-8.
1-29 and subsequent continue the story which culminates in 2-00. So we could stop at 1-99, or roll new characters and continue. I believe that 1-29 to 1-39 can be played in any order. Or we couls continue with the same characters and I can try to scale up the lower level scenarios.

I really enjoy playing Never. She's completely atypical for me and super fun. I would keep playing her if it's not a lot of extra effort.
