Game Master Tareth

You are sailing north aboard the Delightful Rose, an old but dependable merchant trader on its way up the Corsair Coast to Mhalmet. The journey so far has been pleasant and the crew friendly and professional. Now storm clouds brew to the east and the captain and crew all wear looks of worry and even outright fear upon their weather worn faces.

Hi All!

Sorala's player dotting in here. Good luck to everyone with surviving session 0. As a resident of California, I post from Pacific Time. Tomorrow, I'm running a couple of meetings in the morning so I'll likely be along in the afternoon, which may be late afternoon/early evening for US folks further east (and the middle of the night for folks elsewhere!).

This is an unusual recruitment strategy and I'm excited to see where it goes!

Your avatar looks so friendly. But this is intimidating. So in my headcanon they are both correct. It’s just not-raging vs raging pictures.

There weren't any good bear profiles. This dog was close. But Beordt your idea of rage on rage off is probably true.

So what is the god of the sea? Is it just the Mother of the Sea?

Dacknar: In the seven cities Nethus is the King of the Sea and Protector of Ships. Veles the World Serpent is worshiped as the Lord of Oceans and Master of Earth and Water. Seggotan is Lord of the Ocean and Eternity in the dragon realms.

As a side note for those who aren't familiar with the setting, in Midgard the gods are mysterious and not as well known as say in the Forgotten Realms. Midgard gods are more great archetypes that wear a multitude of masks and go by a variety of names and are worshiped in many ways. For instance, Khors in Zobeck may be the same as Aten in the south or Sif in the north. But each has different temples, priests, and expectations of their followers. Mortals can never truly know or understand the gods completely.

Toki: You've all been aboard for at least a couple of weeks. LilRothic is the most recent member who was picked up from a remote location during a fresh water stop several days earlier. But you all have certainly met and at least had some interaction. (The ship is simply too small for you not to and the passengers would typically dine together as your food rations all come from the same 'pot'.)

At the beginning of the current turn, LilRothic and Dacknar are out on the deck. Everyone else is below deck in the galley. Sorala is moving to get her stuff and Dur is heading up above with everyone else working to tie things down or patch the hole spotted by D'Nateh.

I'm going to post a quick summary of the status of things here at the top of each turn. Hopefully this will help everyone have a reasonable idea where they are and what's happening.

Theater of the Mind Top of Turn 3:

On Deck: LilRothic, Dacknar, and Dur. A halfling sailor is trapped in the wreckage of the broken foremast.

In the Galley: Beordt and Tiberius have dealt with the leak. Rilkus and Toki are struggling to secure the barrel but the ship's motion is making it difficult. D'nateh is aiding those making repairs.

In the passenger hold: Sorala has bumped into a fleeing sailor and gathered her gear.

If it helps with interactions-

Tiberius is narcissistic to an extent. He believes he was born with a great destiny/purpose/etc and was given the power to see it through. He does however, understand that even with talent, one must hone it through proper usage. He also realizes not quite everything is about him, or revolves around him. Just most things.

Due to this, and his noble heritage of a particularly "greater than thou" kingdom he can come off as condescending and commanding. Oft seeking to take a leadership role. He doesn't mind to say what he believes in that others are lesser than him. Though, he does make note often to point out that doesn't make them less per say. Only that their destiny and ability may/does not contend with his own. Which is fine, not everyone can be born for greatness after all.

He also has a very competitive nature due to this, often times taking a loss very harshly. After losing a game of chess once, he sat down and played nothing but said game for over a week until he returned and thoroughly defeated the one who beat him.

He also holds himself with a noble grace and dignity one would expect and often shows a surprising and genuine kindness and care to those same people he more or less just called lesser than him.

Sorala's player is no sailor, but I had a job where I had to know a lot about inland waterways and steamboats. Generally, when a steamboat was going to go down, everyone would grab whatever they could that looked buoyant, and pitch it overboard. Then they'd jump in after it, hope they could catch the floating flotsam, and cling to it. A lot of folks that worked on the 19th c. western rivers couldn't swim, so this was really the only option if a vessel took on water or caught fire.

Sorala intends to do this (after helping the injured into the water first). She's weighing whether to make her way immediately topside or to try and convince some of the folks in the galley to form a brigade to take floatable things up through the nearest hatch (wooden benches, barrels, wood tables, loose beams and flooring, etc.).

So I have a question: Before the storm hit, was there enough cargo, barrels, whatever else secured up top before the storm that - assuming that some of it still hasn't been washed overboard, which Sorala wouldn't know one way or the other - there could be plenty of flotsam to toss into the brink for folks to try and wait out the storm on?

Sorala, you wouldn't know exactly what's in every container. However, you would easily recognize the bails of Nurian cotton stored below. There are also several barrels. Some are filled with Seven Cities Wine. Others looked to be empty, but you wouldn't be certain. There are crates of fabric. And most of all several smaller casks of spices. There is also one small launch.

Thanks, DM - Tareth! Just so I'm clear, some of those barrels, crates, etc. are topside (or were, before the storm hit)?

In the Galley: Rilkus, Toki and Sorala secure the barrel. Beordt and Tiberius move toward the deck hatch. N'Dateh looks for other problems but finds none in the galley.

Sorala you use 15' of rope. Beordt, there are likely some empty barrels in the hold or on deck. Of course, full barrels can be emptied fairly quickly. (But to waste all of that wine would be a shame.)

can we take the dodge action when not fixing something to gain advantage on dex checks from the ship? Sort of like bracing ourselves?

Theater of the Mind Summary: Turn 5

On deck: Dur and Lilrothic are on deck where young Klifford is in danger of slipping overboard and the sorceress Malia has collapsed after holding off the worst of a massive wave.

In the bilge: Beordt, Dacknar, Tiberius, D'Netah, and Toki work to mend the growing leaks while dodging the debris being washed about by the violent leanings of the ship.

In the cargo hold: Rilkus and Sorala are caught in the cargo hold where several items have broken loose and tumble about the hold threatening to help capsize the vessel or potentially knock a hole in the hull. There are also several bales of cotton which would surely float in the salty sea water.

Tiberius: Yes, I would allow taking a Dodge action to give advantage on DEX saves.
