Hmmm... we might be dealing with some sort of emotional or psychic parasite here, from what these guys are saying, Terex reports. Something we'll have to keep an eye out for, metaphorically, when we get closer to Narsod.

A hint of frustration creeps through his telepathic voice. We really need to work on building up alliances. There's too much ground for us to cover ourselves. We still need to go back and help the riders with dealing with the village. And finish fixing up the Seal. And probably check in with the Guardians again by the time we're done with that.

That said, I'm going to try to break in here and get a closer look at that crystal.

The little dragon waits for the priests to leave the room, and then sees if he can stealthily open the window and enter.

Before... Minna and Armaund join the hivemind also. You can feel Minna is still no entirely over the pain of her relationship to the crazed gnome Fentor... but she's doing her best. Armaund's great age is evident and you realize the party are first companions he's had that he feels are equal to him...

Inside the camp... As the stealthy party members look on, one priest-officer looks at the larger crystal, says "very well" and takes it out of the office and over the prison-tent, where he slips into a box below the tent and goes back to the office.

Approaching the crystal from under the tent, Terex is able to use <shimmer> to determine that the things seems to be more or less to be what the priest describes; it absorbs emotions of fear and ecstacy and once "full" can open a gate to a somewhat alien dimension. <shimmer> finds the quite interesting indeed and is even curious to see if it, <shimmer> could open the gate and go through. But I assume Terex holds it, back since coming back would be much harder. ...

Meanwhile, in the outside group... this chaco-desert is hot but somewhat lush and filled with animals; in this case deer graze a ways away and some pigs are bathing in mud pool as well as a variety of birds here and there. So you barely notice the approach of one of the Guardian parrots, who zooms down to the group and says "Friends, I'm sure what you're doing here is very important but I desperately need to inform you that a delegation of Fendarions ("tech-villagers") is now headed to the city of Unit 7, the headquarters of Narsod, who we believe has nefarious intentions. Having distinguished yourselves already, we were thinking you could deal with this, since falls in the category of 'interdimensional invasion' still. They are in one of their hovering vehicles and will arrive by tomorrow, noon."

Armaund, with the outside group, strokes his chin and says, "Well, I have one idea about how to impel Fendarion to talk. But we have a little time still."

Uh, let's not do that, <Shimmer>, Terex hastily tells the sapient stone when he figures out what they're planning. Let's just... steal it so we can look at it later, okay? Maybe just pop it into my library for now?

So Terex is able to take the large crystal and <shimmer> hides it in a pocket dimension (separate from the library since it has some noxious qualities) and the party reconnects outside the camp. Since time is of the essence, someone teleports with Thenoden back to Valash and then back to the party (getting the final blood sample you need and promising to return in a few days for the family, though Thenoden may stay behind). Then the party follows a path intended to head off the Fendarions' convoy. As you hustle, Armaund explains his plan. "Myself and those who wish, will simply step out in front of their vehicle and give them a respectful greeting, mentioning the name of their god and that home city of theirs that you visited, Gift, and calling for a discussion. That should be sufficient to persuade them stop if only out of curiosity. Of course, they may try some kind of violence but just a few people probably won't seem a grave threat. If they are arrogant, they will attempt to take us prisoner and they will be in for a surprise. Either way, you may covertly disable their vehicle and weapons once it is stopped. Also, I can summon a wall of force and use this to prevent them escaping or harming us. They will talk, it just depends how much persuasion is involved."

You may choose an alternate plan or where you intend to be locate yourselves for Armaund's plan - with Armaund blocking the vehicle or hidden in the bushes. Also, you have the blood for final enabling of the seal, one more teleport to the top of the hole and a final use of the magitech setup is all you need but you're in too much hurry to do it right now.

So, following the Guardians directions, the party sets out to cut off the Fendarion convoy. In about two more hours, you find yourselves in the proper place, most of the party hiding themselves. Then, you see a hovercraft, armed with several mounted guns and armor and large enough to 4-8 people, approaching along with two of the robot dogs saw earlier.

At the point, Armaud and companions appear in their path (but secretly protected by a wall of force), 60 feet in front of them and Armaund declares, (with a remarkably loud voice, booming into the distance)"Followers of Naranar, come to this land from Ground-Below-Heaven, we welcome you and request an audience, we have much to discuss." At that point, the hovercraft stops, there is silence and nothing visibly happens for two minutes. Then, it glides to the ground and two male Fendarions step out, wearing what looks like power armor with various weapons at their belt and back as well as manacles and chains. Then they walk stiffly towards Armaud, hands, at twenty feet, they step and say, "You are not of our allay Narsod, Who are you who know the name of our Lord and our world?"

Talking about minds with Terex

Eversince the well of soul Gift had been a little withdrawn, and sullon. Where before she had been zipping about in a playful way now she walked. And if she needed to fly or port she took her time. She also seemed less, well supped up. Lest of a fighter like her father and come more like her mother. Considered and thoughtful in her actions. But still there as a sadness in the touch of her mind over the hive-network.

Gift can feel Terex's revulsion at her joke. Don't even joke about that, Gift. Mind and memory manipulation are violent acts, just as much as cutting off someone's tail, or... finger might be. It's forcefully removing a part of someone from them or changing it without their permission. In some ways it can be worse--If someone cut off my tail I'd know I needed a cleric to help fix it, but if I lost a memory? How would I remember I'd lost it, much less get it back?

It has nothing to do with organic vs. artificial minds. I'd have the same objections to hacking into an AI's mind and altering its memory or programming. But note that I'm not saying we absolutely shouldn't do it. We just need to treat it with the same respect as other sorts of violence--only to be resorted to when not doing so will let worse harm happen.

He feels a little sorry for snapping at her like this when she's obviously been down... but this is a subject he feels passionately about.

While Rollo and Armaund speak, Terex slips around to the back of the hovercraft. He examines its propulsion by, say, removing some parts, to see if it would be possible to disable it while it's stopped if the discussion is going badly.

Gift then communicates at her speed with Terex, AI speed, information not as words but images and concepts, layers of date reinforcing what was being transmitted. Everyone in the hive mind can see/feel/hear it.
Time outside the collective seemed to slow down to a crawl.

Hexqill bring up sense-link for the group spending the extra to get two way over the collective to every member.

For a moment every member of the collective can move to any others members POV and feel what is being felt by that member.

It had taken less than a second and it was passed. Once more the Collective had the low level Empathy and hum of joined minds. The world goes back to being its speed again.

This time Gift talks to the group.

The shear pain being held back by Gift is staggering. You can all feel it. And instant you get a small part of what she went throw working the the trapped souls.

::"What if that person gave you the Gift of taking into themselves all that pain so you could forget. And what if that person could remember that horror perfectly. Would you still feel revulsion at the loss of taking away of memory then Terex?"::

Gift is silent for a while.

Gift is able to take control of one of the robot dogs in the time it takes for the Fendarions to stop and approach Armaund and the others. However, the creature seems to have a hard-coded reset that could be triggered - though that would also shut it down for a bit.

Looking that the hovercraft, Terex isn't sure exactly how to stop it but he's thinking some spare electricity to a couple outlets might do it (you'll have to roll disable device and see). Terex notices four more Fendarions inside the Hovercraft also - two are dressed in fine silk and cotton clothes with expense but tasteful jewelry and talking in the back while two other are finishing putting on power armor like that of those outside.

From the two in back, A: "My word, he knew the name of our lord and we have not begun to preach to the natives. Is this the work of The Enemy? Has some heretic defied the council and begun prematurely?" B: "Perhaps our ally Narsod has been chattering?" A:"But Balthor, we have not revealed the name to Narsod either. We have been careful, just saying 'perhaps we worship the same God and hear the same oracles'" B:"Praise be, you're right!"... A: "We need to interrogate ones"

As Gift gives her explanation, two emotions filter from Terex into the network. Patience, as he waits for her to finish. Annoyance, directed solely at himself.

That was very eloquent, Gift, but the fact that it completely misses my actual complaint makes me realize I haven't been clear about my objection, he says once she's done. It's not so much memory modification itself that bothers me, it's doing it against someone's will. That's the idea that I hate. That's the idea I think is another type of violence.

That last scenario is an interesting question... because I probably wouldn't want to accept that, he continues. Not because I would think it wrong or because I wouldn't want to get rid of the pain, but because I know myself. I know that I might, sooner or later, recognize something missing, pursue that, and eventually find out the truth, thereby experiencing all that pain afresh and making someone else's sacrifice meaningless. That's why I would want a choice.

That said, as I was saying before, like any kind of violence it has a place. Like if these guys we're going to talk to start trying to shoot us.

The two Fendarions stop to consider Rollo's statement, when he pauses, each of them looks uncertain. The first "Certainly, this is something we should consider, how did you come to learn this?" while the second says "Who are you? How can we trust you?" while a third voice comes over some kind of transmitter on the chest of the first Fendarion, "Remarkable! This is important, hold for a second, I'm coming out!".

At that point, Terex notices one of the Fendarions in silk and cotton clothes gets to his feet and comes lumbering out of the hovercraft and out to the others. He says, "I am Elder Rydan, emisary for the village. I seek to protect my people and spread the good word of our lord. Can you prove your claims? He seems worried, excited and angry all at once.

The party plays back Gift's recording of the process of freeing the prisoners held by the devils and gargoyles, with an occasional shot of the bodies of the extra-planar creatures.

Elder Rydan and the other Fendarions are stunned by the footage, asked many more questions about the circumstances of freeing the prisoners, the party's purpose and how a group more technologically advanced than themselves could on a world that they view as "primitive".

When party remains ambiguous about their mission, the Fendarions debate among themselves and settle on each praying to their God to be guided.

Finally, Elder Rydan says, "We are debating whether you are angels or emissaries of God - these work in mysterious ways. Our transmitters have been malfunctioning in this environment and so we must return to our village to consult with the other leaders as well as our guidance devices concerning these revelations. You know roughly that tech taken between planes becomes attached to a living being using it. Generally planar travels carry their laws of physics with them but extends primarily to personal possessions and even that is somewhat unpredictable.

Terex keeps his hidden position, just in case, though he relaxes a bit now that it seems like a nonviolent solution may be in reach.

At some point we're going to have to explain to them that everything they know about the universe is wrong, just about, he comments via the hive mind, But now is probably not the best time. Let's just keep it to something along the lines of 'the universe is much more vast and varied than you know, and there are powers beyond what you have previously encountered' or something.


When Gift asks about the "guidance devices", Elder Rydan, "Perhaps we should have secrets also? But no. I can say that one triumph of our civilization is the forging of devices combining the collective wisdom of our scripture. This was part of our what allowed us to piece the veil and reach this new land."

Armaund puts to the party telepathically, "Going with the them back to the village seems it could help us solve at least one problem. Shall we?"

She had no weapons, having absorbed them back into herself alone with Hexqill. He's AI was now in her data core. This way all her outside tech was held within her.

Once inside she looked for a seat for herself and her father.

Yeah, we definitely have to be careful of that AI, Terex agrees. I feel like there's something fishy about it. Especially if they figured out how to get here thanks to AI. This group may be being used as pawns.

Stealthily, the little dragon makes his way to Armaund. I think it's best if I remain unknown to them for now. Can I leave my anchor in your pack while I hide in my library? From the vehicles approach, Blue guesses he can keep up with it flying.

The party gets into the vehicle and heads in the direction of the Fendarion village. Elder Rydan (who's essentially doing all the talking for the Fendarions now) mentions "Just one mystery is that this device, which is rated for 90 mph, can only get to ten mph here but seems to be functioning perfectly" and continues with a discussion of planar mysterious that group confused by - though possibly making smart headway solving.

The trip will take 18 hours and it's mid-afternoon - rather than camp, they plan to simply arrive late in the night.

After three hours, the hovercraft goes over a low rise with some unusual looking cactus or succulent. Then suddenly, the plants reveal themselves as the pseudopods of some strange larger entity (plant?) and these pseudopods lash-out, wrapping themselves around the vehicle and pulling bus-size hovercraft maybe 20'. The Fendarions are desperately trying to get the vehicles' guns pointed at the foe but haven't been able to yet.

"These plants are inteligent, some of us are going to try and communicate to them. If you wish I can take you to safety while we do so. What would you like."

It takes some quick negotiating to convince Elder Rydan and the other Fendarions to allow themselves to be teleported but desperation wins-out and they agree. Rollo and Gift together can teleport twelve creatures and there are six fendarions and seven party members (including Armaund and Minna). Armaund volunteers to stay behind, saying "I'll leave the old fashioned way". Elder Rydan looks about to object again when the rest of the party hops to a rise about 240 feet away.

As you orient yourselves, you see Armaund pull himself out of one of the hovercrafts' port holes and bat-away a couple of the plants' tree-trunk-sized tendrils. The plant seems to sense the party's location and heads in your direction after the futile attacks on Armaund, moving 60' forward. Elder Rydan sucks in a breath and says, "That man, you people. Surely you're angels yourselves. But what is that thing?". Through the hive-mind, Armaund says "I believe it may be after our Fendarion friends, we have to guard them. Remember Gift says it can move underground so be careful. Good luck negotiating!"

See map - 10', not 5' squares, the party is still 180' away from creature. I assume you aim for safety. The thing would take at least two round to get to the rest of you. It seems to be done attacking Armaund.


Forgot that Blue was already outside the hovercraft. Armaund did too, then. It ended fined.

It hovers there just in front of her, she down loads his AI into it.

Also, there are two robot dogs near the hovercraft. They haven't done anything yet because they haven't been ordered to do anything (weakness of dumb AI). But Elder Rydan is inclined to order them to attack now.
