I don't recall seeing this, but I do want to know how far you guys are okay with me going in terms of the following:
- Language
- Gore/Blood in descriptions
- Depth of role play
- Player Freedom (for example, do you want me to keep it mostly sandbox, or should I help usher things along?)
Sicaria Rubei
1)I really don’t care, if I’m being honest.
2)Depends on the circumstances. My general rule of thumb is that if you start describing internal organs, it’s too far.
3)Shrug Not sure what you mean...
4)Again, depends on circumstance. I like a good ol’ “there’s ten ways you could break into this palace” kind of sandbox, but I don’t like where we are now for example, where we barely have any notion of what to do next.
Marcianus Jeggare
1. Language doesn't really bother me, especially in context of this adventure. Personally, I find the use of vulgarity to be lazy, but also see that sometimes expediency and shock have their place.
You won't offend me, but I also won't be using it myself.
2. Meh. If I was squeamish I wouldn't have accepted a role in this adventure.
3. Role play seems to mean different things to different players. I'm in a campaign where a couple of the players would rather spend time interacting with villagers (usually in the bedroom) than moving the story along. That is too much role play. I am in other campaigns where some players don't post except to make attack rolls. That is too little role play.
I want to be somewhere in the middle. So far, I think it has been a good balance in this campaign.
4. Yeah, some hints and nudges would be nice. I really have no idea where we are supposed to go next. Not being able to talk to our intermediary was unfortunate. I am sure we can think of a few things to try, though, once we figure out what we are doing with these prisoners.
GM XaveTheNerd
Sounds like we want a good middle ground on all of it. Great! That's where I naturally sit on most of it.
I still wish to hear from the rest of you, though. Boundaries are important in a game like this.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
Middle ground on all of it sounds fine to me.
I curse like a sailor IRL (you can take the boy out of Brooklyn, etc.), so I'm not going to be offended by harsh language. Given the limitations of the forums, however, an entire dialogue made up of nothing but &*^#$@!! would get old quickly.
Gore/violence - I have limits, but we're unlikely to hit them in a text-only medium running Paizo's published material (based on comments from James Jacobs and others that Paizo would never publish anything as gory as Hook Mountain Massacre again).
Roleplay - if I had unlimited time, every post would be half a page. Since I don't - and who does - sometimes "Wolfgang attacks again with his rapier" is the best I can do.
Sandbox - thank you for the prompt! The problem with a sandbox in PbP is that if it goes on too long, we can forget what we're supposed to be working towards.

Marcianus Jeggare wrote:They are both in the stocksWell, now I’m even more confused about what we’re supposed to do...
Cimri is suggesting that we keep Bolgart prisoner for now and can release Kels if we want.
Wolfgang suggested escorting Kels to the city gates (if there are such things) and giving him a swift kick to speed him on his way.
I don't think we should leave Bolgart outside overnight, so at some point, he needs to be taken back to his cell. I won't fight if you think he should stay outside, though.
Perhaps something will happen overnight or tomorrow. (That is the nudge that I am hearing)
GM XaveTheNerd
I'm going to pull back the curtain for a moment.
This next part of the Adventure Path takes place over the course of a few weeks. There are events that happen at specific times in the week, and other movable events that happen as the rebellion grows in strength. Your job, for now, is to keep order in the streets. Events will come and go, but there will be downtime. At this point, the adventure expects you to be reactive. I do need to know how you're dealing with Kels and Bolgart, though, which is why we're stalling here for a bit.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
Got it, thanks. I think Wolfgang’s vote is pretty clear - leave Bolgart in the stocks (even overnight), remove Kels from town - but he’ll go along with the consensus.
Also, has anyone heard from Gravenail? He hasn’t posted anything here or in the old thread for a while.
Sicaria Rubei

Paraphrasing Gravenail’s player: “I’ve been following along in the gameplay but couldn’t really think of anything to say the last few times I got myself caught up.” And a not insignificant part of it has to do with mental health stuff, medication, and other stuff that I don’t feel I have the authority to disclose as a second-hand person.
Sicaria’s stance on Bolgart and Kels is honestly simple: We were ordered to pillory Bolgart, so she’ll pillory him until she receives orders to do otherwise (we won't let him starve, though; what kind of example would he be then?). We were told to interrogate Kels and we did; what happens to him after that doesn’t really matter to Sicaria.
Marcianus Jeggare
Fair enough. We are in agreement.
Kels gets the boot. Gravenail has been offered the pleasure of roleplaying that interaction (if he cares to), Bolgart comes back inside at night to be fed and hosed off.
Marcianus and Zeke head off to try finding another tavern, (I am ambivalent whether that gets roleplayed or not). Anyone else have actions to take before nightfall or have downtime activities they want to try starting?
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
All - to avoid losing access to our loot list in the (probably unlikely) even that Hawthwile shuts down his Google Docs account, I have made a copy of the loot list and added the mwk glaive we took from Bolgart's bar. GM, please add the link to the top of the page. Here it is:
GM XavetheNerd's Hell's Vengeance - Loot List
Also, how does everyone feel about asking GM Hawthwile to mark the old campaign as inactive? I have almost posted on the wrong thread a few times already since we moved here. I'd be happy to PM Hawthwile the request if there's no objection.
Marcianus Jeggare
+1 Rebellion points "sounds" bad, though perhaps not. I have no context as to what that really means.
Do you guys think we should have handled that differently? Perhaps escorted the guy around town?

I’m pretty sure that it’s supposed to be an abstraction for how pent-up the populace is with the Archbaron’s stuff (after all, WE’RE the members of the oppressive government in this game).
I personally think that rebellion point came about because of inherent racism against hobgoblins; the only way we could’ve prevented it was to deny him access into Longacre wholly. After the info he gave us, I have no regrets doing what we did.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
I agree with Sicaria. The Iomedans taking over the Hellknight castle is the real kick-off to the AP according to the Player's Guide, so we had to learn about it somehow.
The Hell’s Vengeance Adventure Path begins when the Hellknight Order of the Godclaw reveals that its members have found Heart’s Edge, the legendary sword once wielded by the goddess Iomedae. A group of Iomedaean knights calling themselves the Glorious Reclamation, upset that a Hellknight order held an important relic of their faith, raided the Hellknights’ fortress, Citadel Dinyar, and reclaimed the divine weapon. And rather than stopping there, they set their sights on overthrowing the diabolical Thrice-Damned House of Thrune! It is your job to stop them.

Hello fellow miscreants. First off, a big thank-you to the new GM for cutting me a lot of slack while I was absent. And thank you to players for being patient. I was having a rough patch in my life. Things feel on the upswing now. I am glad my prolonged absence didn't get me replaced because I had a lot of fun coming up with this character.
As far as the questions from the GM a few weeks ago: Language, blood, and gore don't phase me and add to immersion if used appropriately. I love that PbP often offers more time for RP (and time to think up the RP) than in-person games. Whether or not I find the inspiration/motivation is a separate matter but before I went absent I was enjoying RPing this guy.
My only rules are: no bathroom stuff (not really offensive to me, just not funny/interesting), no sex unless it's just implied and off-screen, no rape ever ever ever. That's probably about it.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
Glad things are improving for you and glad to have you back, Gravenail!
Gravenail
I'm heading to a remote-ish area of WY until Monday. I'll try to find some time to stay caught up but kinda just assume "Gravenail goes along with everyone else" if I haven't chimed in. So pretty much like the last several weeks. Thanks!
Sicaria Rubei
I'm going to be out of town with minimal internet for the weekend, so don't expect me to post during that time.
GM XaveTheNerd
I'd like to give a formal apology for last week. I honestly just needed a mental health week. I felt off for most of the week. It's cleared now, thankfully, but that's why my posting was inconsistent last week.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
Welcome back, GM. Glad things are improving for you.
Sicaria Rubei
Sabre, scimitar, elven curve blade, they all look the same to Marcianus...
Oh...I took that as a "lie about the sword because it's clearly connected to a very openly evil organization" rather than "Mr. Silver-Spoon don't know weapons."
Marcianus Jeggare
Honestly, I just didn't remember correctly, but it feels better to say Marcianus didn't know the difference :D
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
GM - Something's odd - I can't get to the map. Every time I click the link in your tagline or at the top of the page, I get to Hawthwile's old slide deck for pictures of NPCs. Would you mind reposting the link, please?
GM XaveTheNerd
Oops! My bad. I'm used to having only one slide deck, so I accidentally linked the wrong one. Both links have been updated to correctly point to the maps.
Marcianus Jeggare
Cool. I had just assumed we were doing theatre of the mind.
Updated Zeke's position.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
Got it, thanks!
GM XaveTheNerd
An apology: I had a game I was GMing get moved to last Thursday on shorter notice than I'd have liked. I'll be posting today to make up for it.
GM XaveTheNerd
As a heads up to all: I'm going to be spotty with posting for the next few weeks. In addition to sending my primary computer to the shop for some routine maintenance, I'll be moving in less than two weeks. I'll let you all know when things go back to normal.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
Rough time to be without your primary computer and a rough time for a move - good luck with both!
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
Had a busy day yesterday and another today, but I’ll be back on this evening.
GM XaveTheNerd
Hey all. I've had a conversation with Gravenail's character, and we'll unfortunately be seeing him leave the campaign. They're finding it quite difficult to post consistently, so they've asked that I find a replacement, with hope that they'll eventually rejoin the campaign when they're feeling better overall.
On that note, though, I've already found us a replacement. They'll be making a character to replace Gravenail, but we're still working out the kinks on what exactly they'll be bringing. As a warning, it'll be their first experience with the play by post format, so it'll take them some time to get into the grove.
Also: Move was a success! I've got my computer all set up in its own office room. Only problem now is...I...uhh...don't know what box my books are in. My guess is that it'll be two more weeks before things get back to normal and I return to posting daily. Thanks for bearing with me.
Marcianus Jeggare
Good to know. Thanks for the update, GM.
Can I steal Gravenail's wand of Infernal Healing?

Can I steal Gravenail's wand of Infernal Healing?
Said like a true miscreant! Asmodeus would be so proud.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
I thought stealing was Wolfgang’s gig, but I suppose Sicaria’s right about it being a common trait. Besides, it isn’t stealing so much as it is putting it to it’s best use.
More seriously, I’m sorry to lose Gravenail, and I hope they’re feeling better soon, regardless of whether they decide to rejoin the campaign. Congratulations on successfully moving during the plague, and thanks for the update.
Sicaria Rubei
Just an update to y’all: I have been keeping in touch with the GM in the interim—the move to his new place has gone fairly well, but the transition is still being accounted for; not to mention offline life suddenly hitting like a truck.
That is to say that the GM hasn’t abandoned the game, just that recent things have just been of a greater priority than PbP. Sorry for the wait, everyone.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
Thanks for the update, Sicaria. I'm glad his move went well, I'll be here when he's ready to pick it up again.

Hello all! My name is Michelle and I will be joining your game! This is my first time with play by post, so please be a little patient with me as I figure out how to do it. I typically play more of a silent type kind healer, more of just a background character. Let's have some fun, shall we!
I am currently working on the profile thingy so I will post in Gameplay when it is ready! :)
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
Welcome to the Miscreants, Michelle/Zelicia!
Marcianus Jeggare
Welcome! Just don't be too silent :D We want to hear your evil, witty banter.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
I apologize for going silent - I have been completely underwater with work the past couple of days. I will try to catch up later tonight (I'm on US Central time, currently UTC -5), but should be mostly back to normal by midday tomorrow.

Wolfgang's purchases of mundane tools, now that the bag of holding makes encumbrance less of an issue:
Dungeoneering kit: This bundle of essential supplies for exploring ruins and abandoned cities includes 2 candles, chalk, a hammer and 4 pitons, 50 feet of hemp rope, a hooded lantern with 5 flasks of oil, 2 sacks, 2 torches, and 4 tindertwigs.
Additional purchases: arrows (x20), crowbar, glass cutter, drill, 50' of silk rope, powder (flour) x4 (I would have had Wolfgang buy the flour even if I hadn't seen the post about the unseen whisperer, I swear!).

Apologies all. I've had family come into town for my birthday, and they've taken a vast majority of my free time this last week. They'll be leaving Sunday.

Has the website been super slow for anybody else lately? Every time I went to post Sunday and Monday, it refused to load for long enough that I gave up on it.

Definitely a little laggy, but it has been working for me after a few seconds.

Last week was bad at times, yes. Haven't noticed any problems today.

I would like to offer a sincere apology to all of my Play by Post tables. I've been feeling quite off these past few weeks, with this week as a turning point. I've managed to narrow down what exactly is causing these feelings to "GM fatigue".
I think I've got these feelings sorted out, and I'm moving one of my games into early-level Starfinder for a bit to help keep things "easy" for me to prep while I actually get caught up on prep for two of my other irl games. Unfortunately, as a consequence, Play by Post had suffered, as I spent the time I'd normally have used for PbP on prep for these games. I've received enough of a break in prepping the Starfinder Beginner Box and stuff, so I think I'll be able to get back to posting daily soon (TM). In the meantime, just hang tight. I'm definitely not abandoning these tables.
Wolfgang von Erzteufel
Thanks for the update, GM. For my part, I have found it hard to focus on much of anything except the news for the past 8 months, and the last month or so has been particularly rough, so I can certainly understand having a limited amount of bandwidth to prep. Hang in there.
