Damon moved out into the courtyard to confront the demon, leaving room for his companions to fall in behind (through the door then two more squares left, then one down). With Radiance drawn and pointing to the demon, Damon intoned, "You will find no prey here, demon, only your own death. Return to the hell from which you spawned and never return."

The Ulfen stands next to his brother, shield ready but sword sheathed so he may have one hand ready to work seiðr.

He narrows his eyes and started a muttering hissing tirade, invoking the name of Gorum... and foreshadowing the fell creatures violent death.

Wisdom DC14 Dissonant Whispers Upcast to Level 2:

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V
Duration: Instantaneous
You whisper a discordant melody that only one creature of your choice within range can hear, wracking it with terrible pain. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 3d6 psychic damage and must immediately use its reaction, if available, to move as far as its speed allows away from you. The creature doesn’t move into obviously dangerous ground, such as a fire or a pit. On a successful save, the target takes half as much damage and doesn’t have to move away. A deafened creature automatically succeeds on the save. At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 1st.

Stella was absolutely horrified by the creature that flew down before them. She didn't have the words to describe all of the emotions swirling inside of her, but all her instincts screamed that the creature confidently moving towards them was of the purest evil and needed to be destroyed as quickly as possible. Though she wanted to act immediately, she waited to see how it reacted to Damon's warning, ready to move should it do anything but leave...

You're right; I corrected it. It's 'light wounds'.

And yes, you're in for a tough fight. I downgraded a regular nabassu (CR 15) to CR 10, but it's still tough so be careful.

"I suppose we will have to do this the hard way," said Damon, striding forward to engage the demon. Slashing hard, twice, with Radiance, Damon called again on holy power to smite the evil creature as he swung at the fearsome opponent.

(2 squares left, one square down to engage the demon, two attacks with Radiance, use a first level spell to smite on a hit)

Radiance Attack 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Radiance Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Radiance Attack 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Radiance Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Level 1 Smite versus Demon: 3d8 ⇒ (2, 8, 8) = 18
Crit Sword and Smite Damage added: 4d8 ⇒ (1, 4, 8, 1) = 14

His first hit glancing of the hardened skin of the demon, Damon swung again at an unexpected angle, catching the demon's wing just at its base! Holy power flowing into the wound caused the creature to scream in anger and pain!

So one miss, one smite Crit. That gives us 7 points regular damage, 18 points smite damage, and Crit damage adder of 14 points (weapon damage die plus smite damage dice) for 7+18+14 = 39 points.

Despite the pain, her discipline remained, and she drew deep on her wellspring of energy and struck out at the demon!

Gorum be praised! A fine shot straight from Desna's right hand! And a suitably gruesome death blow... well done!.

He seems very pleased in the aftermath of the battle. It seems a suitable manifestation of divine retribution and a vindication of his decision to wipe these scum from the face of the earth.

Concerned about the vulnerable woman, Damon said to Roscoe, "Can you unlock these chains on this woman?" Turning to face her, Damon said, "The demon who hungered for your flesh is destroyed by steel and spell, and the power of evil in this place has been broken. Let us take you to the temple with the others--you should be safe there while we deal with any remaining ghouls on the plateau. Come, I will lead you. My name is Damon, what is yours?"

Damon will also use Lay on Hands if she is injured, diseased, or poisoned.

As Hallvardr returned triumphant after hunting down a ghoul, Damon looked up from getting the lady settled and commented, "I see you have had good hunting. Perhaps I should try my hand at hunting down any remaining foes--would anyone like to join me? Once we are sure the threat is ended, we could have more people up here with supplies to help clean and restore the temple."

Though she might have been otherwise busy, it seemed Damon looked specifically to Kokam when he asked for company hunting down any stragglers. Still, the job had to be done, help or not, and Damon scoured the complex with the aid of his divine senses for any remaining foes, any other prisoners, or any useful treasure or clues to the recent history the temple complex.

I think we definitely got a bit lucky against that BBEG with a few timely Nat 20s. That probably went as well as it could've gone.

Stella stared down at the half-dead body of demon they just fought. Putting it out of it's misery, she fired another blast of Starfire at its head and watched it till it moved no more. Instantly feeling a sense of relief at it's death, Stella let out an audible sigh as she looked to the others. "I really hope we don't have to fight an army of these things in Drezen. I'm still not sure what it was but it gave me the creeps." she shared.

With that problem handled, Stella followed Damon and Roscoe? back towards the chained woman and helped free her from her bonds.

Kokam raises her spear in salute to her friend, "That was well done, Stella!".

Then she shook her head, though dead, the demon's terrible gaze still affected her....as if something was missing.

She smiles as Hallvadr returns, then nods to Damon, "I'll come, can't leave it around to cause trouble now can we?"

She kept close by his shoulder as he used his Iomedae-granted gifts to find the , hopefully, sole remaining denizen of the soiled temple.

Smiling at Kokam, he replied, ”Indeed, we cannot,” and moves to eliminate the final ghouls.

The hunt itself was somewhat anticlimactic after the epic battle with the demon, but the last ghoul was dispatched without too much fuss. Searching the temple complex carefully, Damon looked for anything useful or that gave hints to the place’s history. As they started heading back, he said, ”Thank you, Kokam, for having my back. "Of course, Stella, I would be happy to help. Let me see what I can do," responded Damon, heading to the top of the precarious stairway and securing a rope for easier transport up and down. Giving the all clear signal to Sosiel in the camp below, Damon shouted down, "Send up some workers--and supplies for cleaning the temple!"

Smiling as a group of paladins carefully made their way up, shepherded by Aron, Damon said, "Well-met, Aron. The temple grounds are secure, though much the worse for wear given the recent inhabitants. Stella is in the main temple, coordinating the cleansing and moving of the bodies. Let us go in and see what needs yet to be done."

Arriving with Aron and a small group of dedicated Paladins, Damon set to work following Stella's instruction. With many hands making the work light, he was soon ready to stand by and observe the disposal of the demon and undead bodies and the honoring of the fallen mortal defenders of the temple. Taking his place during the ceremony, Damon honored the fallen.

The Viking gladly helped drag dead enemies to the pure but then spent time giving the temple a final search for the earlier mentioned healing supplies, trying to dragoon the halfling and any paladins he could get a hold of for assistance.

Once the woman was free Roscoe helped the others find any remaining undead and go about fixing things up. He seems preoccupied with something. "I am not from here. And trust me I get that we want a place of goodness restored. But these lands are behind enemy lines. Folk left here will be targets. Do our crusader allies have the means to hold and keep these folk safe. . . .I mean no offense."

"You speak wisely, Roscoe," said Damon, his brow furrowing in concern. "If Zaira remains here alone, how will she survive? Are there stores of food and drink here? Would others wish to serve with her, or will she remain alone?" he pondered aloud.

"Even if stock it and send troops. . . won't it just be a target. I mean its isolated far from areas held. Which by the most secure area was just sacked." He looks up, "Ahhh I am coming in to hot aren't I."

Too hot?, says the Northman absent mindedly as he continues to search for the promised trove.

Stella looked to the woman and added onto the concerns of the others as she offered to stay behind. "While it would be great to have a caretaker here to take care of this place, I'm not sure if that's possible at the moment... she began. "Actually, now that I think about it... she added after pondering something for a moment, "...it might actually be safer to stay here then to follow us where we're going. Unless you're willing and able to fight, I don't think a battle in Drezen is a place you'd want to follow us to. Though that's just me..."

Action #3

I'm having computer issues; getting a loaner tomorrow so I'll hopefully be able to update then.

Action #3
With the help of the paladins, collecting all of the remains turned out to be a much simpler task than originally expected. While that was being accomplished, Stella spent a bit of time cleaning up what she could inside the main chapel; eventually taking a rest on one of the pews to pull out the cloak she had found earlier. Examining it in her hands, she noted that it hadn't changed from when she had first found it: it was still magnificent but somehow still "off" and lacking something in a way she could not describe. As she continued to hold it in her hands - lost in thought - she heard her name called, and making an impromptu decision, decided to put the cloak on before stepping outside.

Seeing that a small crowd had formed in front of the two piles, Stella took a deep breath before moving forward and standing in front of the two piles, the cloak swaying lightly behind her as she walked. Taking out her broken staff - still broken since she used it to help destroy the Wardstone - she turned to the crowd and said, "I know we can't do much for this place now, but the least we can do is give those who were lost here a proper funeral, and remove all traces of the evils that caused their tragic demise." Conjuring a ball of fire on the tip of the staff, she gently lit the first pyre where the victims were placed. Once it had caught, she moved to the second pyre and lit it using a conjured ball of Starfire.

As soon as the bodies of the demons, undead and other creatures began to catch fire, both pyres lit up brilliantly in an instant as if aided by a powerful accelerant. Simultaneously, Stella felt a strange sensation pulse through her, originating from Desna's cloak. Suddenly glowing brightly, it began to wave in the air with a phantom wind as it's appearance began to shift in front of the crowd's eyes. Changing from the simple dark cloak it had been before into something else entirely, Stella watched as small motes of light began twinkling into existence throughout the its length until it appeared that she was carrying a copy of the night's sky on her back!

The light surrounding the pyres eventually faded to reveal not a single trace of the evils that had lurked here only a short time ago; a pile of ashes remained from the other pile which was caught by another gust of phantom wind and lifted high into the air towards the night's sky. Moments later, the transformation to her cloak seemingly complete, it dropped casually to her shoulders though the "stars" continued to twinkle with whenever there was a bit of movement. Looking at the item in shock as he held it's true form in her hands, she said in shock, "That... was not what I was expecting to happen..." unsure of how to react to what had just occurred.

Damon stood with the other paladins and observed the ceremony, awed and humbled by the divine effects. Saying a quiet prayer to Iomedae, Damon smiled warmly at Stella, encouraging her as she completes the ritual.
